I placed the snake down on the grass at arm’s length and went back to my fishing on the pond using my newfound bait. Shortly thereafter, to my surprise and shock, I felt a nudge on my foot. St. Patty’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day traditions and how they began By Rosemary Fetter n March 17, most Americans proudly wear green, even those lacking an ancestral connection to the Emerald Isle. The holiday is celebrated with gusto in the U.S. partly because America’s Irish population is the one of the country’s largest ethnic groups, second only to the Germans. (For reasons likely dating back to World War I, Oktoberfest never caught on quite like St. Patrick’s Day.) Irish-Americans number more than 34 million, more than eight times the modest 4 million souls who still reside across the sea. If the Scots-Irish and the Anglo-Irish are included, the numbers go even higher. Americans love St. Patrick’s Day parades, shamrocks, great music and green beer, but the details of the holiday are sometimes a little foggy. Here’s a brief look at St. Patrick’s Day symbols and traditions, and how they all began.

Americans may think four-leaf clovers are synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but that’s not the case. The Holy Trinity symbolism of the three-leaf variety makes it the preferred St. Patricks shamrock.

PAGE 4 4 PAGE

The patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick was originally a Welshman named Maewyn, born sometime around 375 A.D. Although both parents were Roman Catholic, Patrick admitted to being a heathen until age 16, when a group of marauders kidnapped him and took him back to Ireland. During the next six years of slavery, Patrick spent a lot of time alone and finally saw the light. After escaping to Gaul (France), he joined a monastery and determined to convert the green isle to Christianity. He became Ireland’s second bishop; an apparent charmer who won converts by the score and traveled through the countryside founding monasteries, schools and churches. By the time he died on March 17, 461 (or thereabouts), he had converted Ireland to Christianity. Although Patrick has been credited with driving the snakes out of Ireland, the country was never troubled by this particular reptile. The legend likely refers to the serpent symbol of the pagan Druids.

St. Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, telling his flock how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day.

The bluestone block called Blarney Stone was set into the battlements of the Cormac castle in 1446. Kissing the stone supposedly endows one with “the gift of gab.” The word, “blarney,” may have originated in the 16th century, during the reign of England’s Elizabeth I. The Queen wanted all the Irish lords to swear allegiance to her, but Cormac McDermot MacCarthy, chieftain of Blarney Castle in County Cork, avoided commitment by flattering and placating Elizabeth. She finally declared in frustration: “This is all Blarney!” Anyone who wants to kiss the blarney stone (or at least give it a big hug) need not go to Ireland. Fitzgeralds Casino in Black Hawk has its very own blarney stone, and visitors are invited to drop by and pay their respects.

Leprechauns are “fairy folk” who usu-

ally take the form of cantankerous and mischief-making old men. Cobblers or shoemakers by trade, they are supposedly the keepers of great treasure crocks. According to legend, if anyone keeps an eye fixed upon the leprechaun, he cannot escape; the moment the eye is withdrawn, he vanishes. In 1959, Walt Disney released a film called Darby O’Gill & the Little People, which introduced America to a cheerful, friendly leprechaun more like the Keebler elf, a purely American invention that has become an easily recognizable symbol of both St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland.

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York City on March 17, 1766, and consisted mostly of a contingent of Irish soldiers. Today, the parade is traditional in many cities, with the largest celebrations held in Chicago, Savannah and New York City, respectively. The town of Leadville has an interesting custom of holding a St. Patrick’s Day Practice Parade in September, with bagpipers and Irish dancers led by a bright green fire truck. It’s a sight to behold.

Very few St. Patrick’s Day celebrations go by without someone bursting into that great IrishAmerican song, O Danny Boy, leaving not a dry eye in the house. Actually, an Englishman, Frederick Weatherly, published the song in 1913, using an old Irish aire, Londonderry Air. Popularized by Irish-American vaudevillians, the tune became an Irish favorite, often sung at funerals. Although some maintain the song deals with a father watching his son go off to war or leave the country during the famine, publisher’s notes reveal that, as many of us suspected all along, it’s actually about a woman bidding farewell to her lover.

THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 25 20 Years

Vintage St. Patricks Day Greetings bear the image of the patron saint of Ireland as well as the shamrock.

A term believed to have originated in the United States, black Irish commonly refers to dark brown or black hair appearing in persons of Irish descent in contrast to the blond, light brown or red hair color usually ascribed to the Irish. According to a recent Irish study, dark hair is common in Ireland: more than 40 percent of the population have dark brown hair, 35 percent have medium brown hair and another 3 percent have black hair.

On St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, the traditional fare was Irish bacon and cabbage. Irish-American immigrants found bacon too expensive and substituted the less costly corned beef. Beer has always been an Irish favorite, although, no true Irishman would sully his stout with green coloring. This is strictly an American invention.

A sturdy reliable walking cane made out of Irish blackthorn, the shillelagh’s sturdiness and resistance to warping, chipping or discoloration made it a favorite of Europeans.

The basis of this relatively recent practice is both religious and political: Irish Protestants, mostly in Northern Ireland, wear orange on St. Patrick’s Day and Catholics wear green. Ever since the Protestant King William of Orange (III) took the throne of Britain in 1690, Protestant Irish have been known as “Orangemen.”

Last Friday night I took a spin on our local wild and exciting roller coaster ride known as the Ameristar Express. This is a hair-raising, BY unpredictable, white LARRY knuckle gripping JOHNSON ride that starts the moment you take a seat at the $30 - $60 half kill limit hold em poker game (also known as the Big Game) at the Ameristar Casino Poker Room in Black Hawk. The room was packed with 4 Big Games going full blast due to the Heartland Poker Tour being in town. I quickly took my seat, got strapped in, and the wild ride began with the first hand. I looked down to pocket 4’s and as there was no raise and I had posted my $30, joined four others to see a flop of 4h - 4s 2h. What a start/flopping quad 4’s to start the session. One person bet and two of us called. The turn was a 3h and the other player bet with

poker talk

the original better just calling. At this point I raised the $60 bet to $120 and both players called. The river brought the 2d and the original player bet out. Well - with the poker room having a $150,000 bad beat for quads over quads I began to get excited, raising his bet and hoping he had caught quad 2’s. Unfortunately, the third player folded and the person who bet just called my raise, turning over his pocket 3’s and a full house he had caught on the turn. Close - oh so close, but no cigar! While there was no bad beat, I did win a good $800 pot to start the day. It occurred to me as I was dragging the chips that I should just get up and go with this nice win after one hand but, deep down, knew I couldn’t as the roller coaster had already started up the first hill, I was strapped in, and there was no turning back.

Rollin’ Dough

Just a few hands later the ride continued when I was dealt the Kd - Qd and ended up joining five other players in a capped $120 pot pre-flop. The flop came Kc, Jd, 5d giving me top pair and the second nut diamond draw. One player bet, another raised, and we all called $60 with four of us seeing the Qc come on the turn. This gave me top two pair with the same great flush draw so when the original better bet out, I raised and was surprised when the player behind me re-raised to $180. Hmmmm — finally it occurred to me; could he have A-10? After the three of us paid $180 the river came a 4s. The player who raised the turn bet, the other player folded (he said was on a draw) and I called as my opponent turned over Ad - 10d for the nut straight and a big win. Whew - the ride never stops. I fought through a few hours of up and down play with my stack of chips steadily shrinking to the point where I was down $1,200. During this period, I had pocket A’s cracked in a $50 - $100 capped hand by an A - K that caught a straight — a very tough beat. Then, all of a sudden, the ride became real exciting due to just two hands. First, I had pocket Q’s in a 5-way pot,

flopped a Qh, and the set held up for a very nice pot with quite a bit of betting going on. It’s always nice when a good hand holds up. Then, I did something unexpected. On the button, I raised a six way $30 pot to $60 with a 5c - 6c — just to build the pot odds. The flop came 5d - 10c - 8h with one player betting and five of us calling for $30. The turn was an Ac and another player bet with the four players calling for $60. The river was the magical 5h giving me an unexpected set and one player bet with me quickly raising. He slowly looked at me, shook his head, and was the only one to call - turning over the pocket K’s he had slow played. If he had raised on flop, I would not have tried my button move. So, this pot was nearly $800; I was up at that point just over $300; and the roller coaster was rolling into the station - time to exit the ride. And I did! I got up, cashed out my win, and was completely mentally exhausted from my four-hour exhilarating ride on the local roller coaster known as the Ameristar Express / WHOO HOO! Remember - have some fun and play your game!

(I’m sure you were hoping it would.) There are official documents from the United Nations on the box and Butler says they contain MY name and email address. Wow! I’ve never dealt with the UN before, nor do I know a single London diplomat, but if I ever meet this one, I’m going to smack him for sharing my email address. Still, I’m hooked on the story, and Butler doesn’t disappoint. He promises to share the loot with me, 70% for me, and 30% for him. This seems extremely generous, if a little foolish, since he doesn’t know how much money is in the box, or if the diplomat has a mean streak and mob ties.

He asks me to send him my phone number and address so that he can have the package delivered, and he stresses that I should send my information to his personal email rather than an official one. This adds to the clandestine feel of the story as well as the sense that he doesn’t actually have an official email address, at least not at the Harrisburg International Airport. Finally, he urges me to keep the whole thing confidential. I’m usually good at keeping secrets but I don’t know about the other 10,000 people he’s emailed, so I don’t see the harm in telling you. I’m just so darned excited about my windfall, as well as Butler’s potential as a fiction writer. I’d be thrilled if he could focus on his first novel; hole up somewhere and type away all day on his computer—as long as it doesn’t have internet access.

I know it won’t be easy for him; there’s a lot of competition out there. In fact, I’ve received several other fascinating emails in the last few days. One was from Mr. Robert Goode who has discovered that his boss connived with top World Bank officials to divert funds intended for inheritances, international contracts, and lottery wins. The other was from Mrs. Suzanna Gokhan whose husband died recently under suspicious circumstances. She doesn’t say what those circumstances were but I’m not going to email her back to ask. I think I’ll wait for the movie. (Dorothy Rosby is the author of the humor book, I Didn’t Know You Could Make Birthday Cake from Scratch: Parenting Blunders from Cradle to Empty Nest. Gemstones & Minerals

The Sancy Diamond

The Sancy Diamond (full name, Le Grand Sancy) has one of the most intriguing and colorful - and one of the most confused and involved - histories of all the famous diamonds of Europe. It is a 55-carat pear-shaped stone, apparently of Indian origin, and is said to be one of the first to be cut with symmetrical facets. In 1570, the stone was purchased in Constantinople by the French Ambassador to Turkey, Nicholas Harlai, the Seigneur de Sancy, who was an avid collector of gems and jewelry. This passion for personal adornment was more in evidence during the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe than at any other time or in any other place, except in the East. He brought it to France, where Henry III, who was very sensitive

the Civil War, Queen Henrietta Maria took it to the Continent and pledged it, together with other diamonds, to the Duke of Epernon for 460,000 livres. In 1657, Cardinal Mazarin paid off the Duke and, with the Queen’s consent, took possession of the gems and bequeathed them with other fine stones to Louis XIV. In 1792, at the beginning of the French Revolution, the Sancy and other famous gems were stolen from the Garde Meuble (Royal Treasury) in Paris. It reappeared in 1828 and was sold by a French merchant to Prince Anotole Demidoff of Russia; the prince, in turn, is recorded as selling it in 1865 for $100,000. Two years later, it was displayed by the French jeweler, G. Bapst, at the Paris Exposition, bearing a price tag of one million francs. In 1906, the Sancy was purchased by William Waldorf As-

ry of Jewels in the Tower of London, the jewel is described in the quaint language of the period: “... and one fayre dyamonde, cutt in fawcetts, bought of Sauncy.” It remained in England until 1669. Charles I, son of James I, was beheaded and his widow, Henrietta Maria, presented the jewel to Somerset, the Earl of Worcester, from whom it passed once again to the English Crown. James I later owned it, but he lost all at the disastrous Battle of the Boyne and fled to France. Although Louis XIV was a pleasant and generous host to James, shabby, mournful, exiled kings bored him. James, in desperation, sold the stone to the greedy king, who was known for his love of diamonds. Louis gave him L25,000, which did much to impress James with the security value of gems in time of need. According to another gem historian, the Sancy was sold under different circumstances. During

tor (1st Viscount Astor) as a wedding present when his son (later 2nd Viscount Astor) married Nancy Langhorne of Virginia. Lady Astor often wore the big pear-shaped gem in a tiara on state occasions. In 1962, it was one of the features of the Ten Centuries of French Jewelry exhibition at the Louvre Museum. After Lady Astor’s death in 1964, the celebrated stone was inherited by her son, the 3rd Viscount Astor. The gem is set in a mounting that permits it to be affixed to the head ornament. (Note: The Maharajah of Patiala also claims ownership of a “Sancy Diamond”. Although this stone also is pear shaped, it weighs 60.40 carats, or about 10 percent more than the Sancy of the Astor family.) (Information for this article was taken from the 1966 GIA book on “Diamonds.”)

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Don’t allow a power struggle to disturb the harmony at home or at the office, Libra. Unless you can be level-headed and see all sides of the situation, keep mum.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, there is no room in your life right now for lazy thinking. All of your focus must be directed at the tasks at hand because someone is relying entirely on you.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, continue to be diligent in your pursuit of knowledge. The more you learn, the more fulfilled you will be. Consider going back to school to satisfy your thirst for knowledge.

during the past 15 years from the book,” she said in 1971. “The only reason is because Morey gave me a percentage of his royalties. Last year brought me less than $400. And Morey certainly didn’t need the money, he was a millionaire.” She received several lucrative offers over the years to advertise products or put her name on magazine articles. With a few exceptions, she turned them down. At least her allergies improved after Bernstein’s sessions. Tighe later divorced her husband and remarried Richard Morrow, owner of an auto dealership in Englewood. She died in 1995, leaving behind four children, two stepchildren and several grandchildren. Bernstein subsequently gave up hypnosis, prospered in the stock market and became a philanthropist, donating land for Pueblo’s convention center and arts center and giving millions to the University of Southern Colorado. He, too, passed away in 1999. Bridey has inspired numerous theories and several imitators over the last 70 years, particularly during the 1960s and 70s. Skeptics abounded, but there were still believers. Some psychologists confidently attribute the story to “cryptomnesia”, which apparently occurs when a forgotten memory returns without being recognized as such by the subject. Due to the Hearst articles, however, most people still think Bridey was a fraud or the product of repressed childhood memories. Who knows for certain? Perhaps the truth is out there... somewhere.
