Casinos should be wary of online action
By Bob Sweeney
I
’ve never gambled online and have little desire to do so, but have many friends who enjoy playing for points with players across the planet. No money is involved and players will enjoy hours of online competition that may lead to playing real poker at
a nearby casino location. Poker is like the Stock Market, playing with fake money where there is very little pressure is not like the real thing. When real money is at stake, bluffing, fear and greed enter the game. This is entirely different than playing poker where fake money waits for the last “river card.” It is possible that legalized online betting will go forward. New Jersey has legalized online betting and we might surmise that someone living in Colorado could go online and gamble on the web sites in New Jersey. We might assume that to pay one must have established credit by using credit cards, or cash before an account is opened by whoever is running the poker games. There aren’t any IOU’s
in gambling among players, but we might surmise that those promoting gambling might induce “markers” into the mix of things where they will advance funds to players with established credit. Gambling has become a huge tax revenue stream for cities and states with more gambling tax dollars generated in Detroit than collected from the car manufacturers. Like Internet shopping where sales taxes may or may not be collected from nationwide shoppers, governments need to be very careful that they do not lose the tax revenues by gaming shifting to a tax-free base in some far off location. Colorado gaming hires more than 10,000 employees, huge revenues in food and drink venues, and more than $100 million in tax rev-

enues to governments. All of this could be lost to the Internet and the cloud that could allow gambling online to almost any location. It is not so far off, New Jersey is now doing it and those people on the closed Washington bridge could have relaxed and just played poker until the traffic jam went away. Nevada has the largest dog in this hunt and we need to access what that state is doing on this issue. We also need to follow their lead in laws governing gaming, limits, hours and games. Sports betting should be added to Colorado’s menu of what is allowed in licensed casinos. It is a good bet to believe that real gambling online is at hand. www.coloradogambler.com

Tournament Tales: The Quest
FULLHOUSE By Drew Chitiea
In 1605 Miguel de Cervantes (Spanish playwright: 1547 – 1616) published what is now considered the first European novel – and one of the greatest books ever written: Don Quixote [Kee-hoetee]. It relates the adventures – and misadventures – of a minor Spanish noble who, trying to relive the age of chivalry, takes the title name then travels about “righting wrongs” and performing chivalrous acts. In the 1960’s this story was made into one of the ‘warhorses’ of American musicals – Man of la Mancha. This epic contains many memorable songs; the greatest of which is The Quest. Sung by the title character, a segment of the
lyrics is: This is my quest To follow the star, No matter how hopeless, No matter how far. So, you might ask, what has this to do with poker? By the time this is published, the Heartland Poker Tour will have concluded and moved on to its next venue. But for three days straight, I had a quest; I followed that star – so to speak – to gain entry to the tournament through playing in several satellite tournaments. I cleared my schedule, had the entry fees in hand, and was rested and ready for the grueling endurance session that is a satellite tournament. These are exercises in patience followed by brief moments of hard aggression when the opportunity arises. So much so that, for me at least, I was so inured to the patience part that I missed some opportunities for aggressive play. One I remember was when the blinds were $200/$400 and I was in mid-late position. The player after the button raised to $800; by the time the action came to me there were three other callers. Not seeing the possibilities here
with two semi-aggressive players behind me yet to act (and fearing potential raises), I mucked my pocket 4’s. Those players behind me merely called the min-raise. You know what happened: A four on the flop and, just for insult, a four on the river which would have given me quads. As the hand played out I would have eliminated one player and severely crippled two others. Phooey! I think I over-thought that hand and reasoned myself out of a winner, giving me a huge leg up for lasting through to the top 20 percent and qualifying for the main tournament. As it came to pass, I busted out two from the money (the ‘bubble’s’ bubble) and went home somewhat disgusted at that turn of events. OK – the sun rose again the next day - I was refreshed and ready to make things happen. I thought about my play of the previous day, making some resolutions as to how to change things around. I was somewhat more aggressive and began to load up on the chips acquired from stealing blinds, out-playing other players and – occasionally – having the best hand at the showdown. Things were looking up… Right, then: Played from 11
CDOT launches ‘Drive High, Get a DUI’ Arapahoe sheriff expects need for drugrecognition training By Peter Jones
Although legalized marijuana has been among the most highly charged issues to hit Colorado in recent years, public safety has been one rare area of agreement among advocacy groups, law enforcement and other interested parties. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has joined the Marijuana Industry Group and other police and community organizations in supporting “Drive High, Get a DUI,” a new campaign by the Colorado Department of Transportation. The program is designed to educate and warn the public on the dangers – both medical and legal – of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana. “We all cooperate and work very effectively with CDOT,” Sheriff Dave Walcher said. “They take the lead and all local agencies participate to a degree.” Michael Elliott, executive di-

rector of the Marijuana Industry Group, said his organization has been providing CDOT with a voice from the marijuana community as an active participant on the Interagency Task Force on Drunk Driving. “We want this new industry to thrive, and the best way to do that is to ensure marijuana users and the industry understand the laws and regulations and consume marijuana responsibly,” Elliott said. Drivers intoxicated by marijuana have been a growing concern in the face of the gradual legalization of both medical and recreational marijuana use. In 2012, about 12 percent of Colorado drivers that were involved in roadway fatalities and tested for drugs were found to have marijuana in their systems. In Arapahoe County, the problem has been somewhat less significant, though Walcher does not think his jurisdiction will be spared for long. “Right now, it’s a fairly low percentage, probably 5 to 10 percent of the people we stop,” he said. “But I know that our business related to marijuana enforcement and driv-
ing under the influence is going to increase. There’s no doubt in my mind.” Before launching “Drive High, Get a DUI” this week, CDOT conducted extensive research that found medical and recreational marijuana users held erroneous beliefs on the effects marijuana. Twenty-one percent of respondents who said they had used marijuana in the past year had driven a motor vehicle after consuming it within the previous month. Those who drove within two hours of using marijuana did so more than 15 times a month. “We heard repeatedly that people thought marijuana didn’t im-
a.m. to just after 6 p.m.; there is but one player to eliminate and we’re in the tournament. I had for the last hour or so husbanded my chips, making plays here and there, and was short-stacked but still viable with perhaps two times my starting stack when the average was at least four times. I figured everyone remaining at my table was eyeing the other table (we were 10-handed, they 9-handed with 18 getting into ‘the money’) and woke up with AceKing suited two seats from the cut-off seat (the one to the right of the button). I then made my oneand-only big mistake of the game – I went all-in. Again, you know what happened: The player to my left – who had a large stack and had been quiet for the last hour – woke up with pocket Kings! All those other players got into the main tournament courtesy of me; I bubbled out of that qualifier by making an overly aggressive – and frankly un-needed – move when a little more patience may likely have gotten me past the bubble into qualifying-land. Phooey times two! The third day found a player taking an empty seat next to me in early session. He no more settled pact their driving ability, and some believed it actually made them a better driver,” CDOT spokeswoman Amy Ford said. CDOT hopes to change that, starting this week with television spots aimed squarely at men age 21-34, the group with the highest number of DUIs. CDOT also plans outreach to rental-car companies and marijuana businesses to inform tourists and local users about the driving laws in Colorado. Here are some facts the campaign plans to emphasize: • Driving under the influence of marijuana can result in costs of more than $10,000. • It is illegal to drive with five nanograms of active THC in one’s blood. In any case, officers can base arrests on observed impairment. • If a driver is under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana, his risk increases to 24 times that of a sober driver, according to the American Journal of Epidemiology. • If children are present in the vehicle, an impaired driver can be charged with child abuse. • It is illegal to have marijuana in the passenger area of a vehicle if it is in an open container, a container with a broken seal, or if there is

his chips when he made a minor raise; I looked down at pocket Jacks and called. The flop was J-5-3 rainbow. He bet, I raised, he reraised and I just called. The turn was nothing dangerous; after he made a large bet, I went all-in with him calling. He turned over pocket Aces! When the river came my trip Jacks held up: He played exactly one hand in the tournament and I had doubled up! Well, from then on I was carddead and bled chips away until I had to go all-in with a flopped two-pair, losing to a flopped set. The quest was over: I had no other options to attempt entry as my work schedule crowded out any possibility of that. I meandered back home with a bent sword, dented shield, lame horse and rusted-out armor to lick my wounds and recover. But as those of us who follow the Rockies say at the end of every season: “Hey, there’s always next year.” I am I, Don Quixote, The Lord of la Mancha My destiny calls and I go. And the wild winds of fortune Shall carry me onward, Oh, whither so ever they blow. evidence marijuana has been consumed. It is also illegal to consume marijuana on any public roadway. The new normal of legalized marijuana in Colorado has presented its share of challenges to the state’s law enforcement community. Part of the problem is that the standard roadside sobriety test used for alcohol will not work for marijuana, which requires a more time-consuming off-site blood test. For that reason, Arapahoe County and other agencies will eventually need to increase drug-recognition training, according to Walcher. According to the Arapahoe sheriff, the greatest adjustment for his deputies has been getting used to a world where using and transporting small amounts of marijuana is not necessarily grounds for arrest. “When I started in law enforcement years and years and years ago, everything was illegal – paraphernalia, any amount of marijuana, seeds. Life was easy then,” Walcher said. “You’d see Zig-Zag rolling papers sitting on the dashboard, and if you were a good cop you’d start asking questions. Now we have all these new challenges. We’ll adjust to this.”

How is reason why they shouldn’t mow their lawn at the crack of dawn. Don’t do that possible? There are two kinds of people that—not that you would. ers blame us light sleepers for our problems. “Are you drinking too much caffeine?” It’s not caffeine; it’s you! I mean them. They’re waking us up. Or they wonder if we’re worrying or even feeling guilty about something. Not yet. But wake us up one more time and we might be. Sound sleepers do have at least one redeeming quality. Because they’re well rested, they’re cheerful. It’s exhausting to be around them. I was awakened late one night by a cheerful sound sleeper who was a guest in our home. She woke me up to say goodnight. I wish I was making that up—especially since she may be back. Meanwhile, light sleepers may or may not be cheerful, depending on how the night went. We also may or may not be light, but that’s neither here nor there. Just remember, if

we’re grumpy and mean, it’s probably your fault. Light sleepers are on guard while the rest of the family sleeps. We answer late night phone calls. We go around shutting the windows if a summer storm kicks up. We hear intruders in the middle of the night—or we think we do. Finally, we’re considerate. As a light sleeper, I sometimes watch my husband or my son sleeping with the television blaring or the phone ring-

Light sleepers actually feel bad when we wake someone up --unless they have it coming. (Contact drosby@rushmore.com or see www.dorothyrosby.com. Follow on Twitter @dorothyrosby.)

Colorado History
The University of Denver celebrates 150 Years of Excellence in Education
O
By Rosemary Fetter
n March 5, 1864, Territorial Gov. John Evans, and other city fathers, including railroad entrepreneurs David Moffat and W.H. Loveland, and Rocky Mountain News Publisher William Newton Byers, founded Colorado Seminary in the heart of the pioneer Denver. Although Methodists instituted the college, the school charter stated that a test of religious faith would not be required for admission. The university’s primary advocate and supporter for the rest of his life, John Evans Sr. was a true Renaissance man. A surgeon, inventor, town promoter and politician, Evans founded Mercy Hospital in Chicago and Northwestern University. Abraham Lincoln appointed him Colorado’s second Territorial Governor in 1862. Two years later, after losing the governorship, Evans turned his attention to railroads. The city’s railroad baron, he helped found the Denver Pacific Railway, a link to the Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne that saved the city from oblivion. He later owned several railroads, including the Denver and New Orleans railroad, which provided a route through Denver that later charted the course for I-25. He also controlled the Denver Tramway Company, which had an exclusive franchise to build electric streetcar lines in the city. Evans donated land and a twostory building for the Seminary at the corner of 14th and Arapahoe, a fairly quiet residential neighborhood at the time. Two years later, having accumulated substantial debt, the college closed. Evans bought back the building and held on to it until 1880, when the school reopened as a degree-granting institution, the University of Denver. The new college welcomed 30 students, from primary grades to higher institution, with special attention given to chemistry and mining. By that time, taverns and brothels surrounded the Arapahoe Street building, to the horror of its Methodist founders. Most supporters felt the college needed a new, pristine site more conducive to study. After a major fundraising drive, Evans and others had accumulated $50,000

for new buildings. In 1884, Elizabeth Iliff Warren, widow of cattle baron John Wesley Iliff, donated $100,000 to the university to establish the Iliff School of Theology. Although John Iliff had not been a particularly religious man, he had supported a Methodist ministry in Colorado. Her second husband, Bishop Henry White Warren, was the first Methodist bishop in Colorado and a strong DU supporter. With sufficient funds for buildings, the university sought the perfect new site, a suburban enclave similar to Evans’ Northwestern University in Illinois. Although DU received several offers, the college finally selected a donation by Rufus “Potato” Clark” of 80 acres, three miles south of Denver. Clark and his family arrived in Denver in July 1859 via ox-pulled covered wagon. Three years later, he staked out a large farm at what is now Overland Municipal Golf Course, along the South Platte
River across from Ruby Hill Park. He made a fortune selling potatoes freighted to the mining towns and subsequently ventured into real estate. At one time, his landholdings included nearly 20,000 acres, much of it located near today’s Greenwood Village and Cherry Hills Village. A former seagoing man with a fondness for colorful language, Clark admitted to once being “a confirmed drunkard, a slave to drink, so deep in the mire of drink and sin I never cherished a hope of getting out.” He saw the light at a revival meeting in Denver and changed his ways. Known for many charitable acts, including building a college in Sierra Leone, he donated 80 acres for the University of Denver, enabling it to relocate three miles southeast of downtown Denver. The gift made it possible for DU to escape what Clark called “the moral and environmental pollution of the city.” He insisted that: 1) trees must be planted and a street grid laid out, and 2) alcohol

The story of Charles Hall South Park Salt Works
The South Park Salt Works complex was built in 1866, or perhaps even earlier. Historian LeRoy Hafen stated this “factory” was Colorado Territory’s second manufacturing plant. (The first was a cannon foundry in Den- By Linda Jones jones.128@live.com ver.) Salt in 1866 was frightfully expensive, selling for $1 a pound. Crofutt points out in his Gripsack Guide of Colorado (1881) that all salt used in the Territory had to be freighted in wagons from the Missouri River, 700 miles to the east, at a cost for freight alone of up to 20 cents a pound. The South Park Salt Works were not far from the original wagon road over Trout Creek Pass between South Park and Buena Vista. Charles L. Hall discovered the salty spring, built the factory there and ordered 18 huge cast-iron evaporating kettles in which to boil the salty water until only the valuable salt remained. The kettles were three inches thick, 16 – 18 inches deep and 40 inches across; they each cost $1,500 for a total of $27,000, a monumental sum in those days. He made his first shipment of salt to Denver in 1866; his customers were mostly mines and South Park was the second location of a manufacturing plant in Colorado Territory, South Park Salt Works, which was built in 1866.
