Going Green
More than 1 billion people set to celebrate Earth Day around the globe n April 22, most Americans observe Earth Day, a celebration of the environment and resource conservation. However, two different Earth Days have been formally recognized in this country, both initiated in 1970, for slightly different reasons. The first celebration, held on or

around March 20, comes at the spring equinox, when the sun crosses the equator, and day and night are the same length all over the world. (Technically, According to National Geographic, the days of equal night and day come slightly before the vernal equinox in March and after the autumnal equinox in September. Much depends on where you happen to be standing at the time.) A brief moment rather than an entire day, this year the spring equinox took place on March 20 at 5:02 a.m. Ancient people took note of the equinox phenomenon, holding feasts and celebrations that included Alban Elfed, the Teutonic festival, the Celtic celebration honoring the goddesses Eostre, Roman Hilaria Matris Deûm, Welsh Gwyl Canol Gwenwynol (Day of the Gorse), the Wiccan Eostar (Ostara) Sabbat and the Catholic Feast of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, this year held on March 25. Easter derives from these celebrations, although, Christians have made this a movable holiday, occurring any time between March 22 and April 23. The equinox heralds the blossoming of spring in the northern and autumn officially begins in the southern hemisphere. The concept of global Earth Day at the spring equinox originated with Denverite John McConnell, who introduced the idea at a UNESCO conference on the environment in 1969. (McConnell also developed the Earth Charter along with anthropologist Margaret Meade.) The first Earth Day proclamation, issued by San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto on March 21, 1970, was an occasion for ceremonies, street fairs and a toast to Mother Earth. (Since this was the “Age of Aquarius,” the flower children were blossoming in that city.) During the apex of the Vietnam War, with the country in a state of upheaval, Earth Day originated in support of the peace movement, as a time to bring all nations of the world together in harmony. Anthropologist Margaret Mead said at the time, “Earth Day is the first holy day which transcends all national boarders yet preserves all geo-
graphical integrities, spans mountains and oceans and time belts, and yet brings people all over the world into one resonating accord…” On Feb. 26, 1971, U.N. Secretary General U Thant proclaimed an International Earth Day, and that ceremony has continued ever since on the date of the vernal equinox. This Earth Day would be adopted by the United Nations, which still observes that date, although it also recognizes environmental efforts of April 22. Eight years ago, former Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper issued a proclamation honoring John McConnell, who “has devoted much of his life to the pursuit of peace, happiness for all people and the protection of our planet Earth,” and naming March 20, 2005, Denver’s Earth Day. The April 22 Earth Day, which is the official date observed in the United States, originated in September 1969 at a Seattle conference, when Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson brought environmentalism into the national spotlight after a visit to the terrible Santa Barbara oil spill earlier that year. Although mainstream America remained oblivious to looming environmental catastrophe, Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962 provided the impetus for the modern environmental movement, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries. Following her lead, Nelson organized a national celebration in an effort to popularize political support for strong environmental measures, mobilizing more than 20 million people, mostly students, who took to the streets in peaceful support. Later recognized as World Environment Day by President Jimmy Carter, April 22 held significance for organizers for various reasons. The date marks the birthday of J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska Territory pioneer who held the earliest Arbor Day celebration in the 1850s by planting trees on the dry plains. This was also the birthday of actor Eddie Albert, known for his early work in environmental causes. Interestingly, some of
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years
the early organizers thought conservationist John Muir was born April 22, although his birthday was actually April 21. Russian dictator Vladmir Lenin was born April 22, leading a minority in the midst of the Vietnam War to suspect that Earth Day was a subversive Communist plot. Whatever the significance, this grassroots celebration marked the official birth of the environmental movement, mobilizing groups that had been fighting against pesticides, oil spills, air pollution, nuclear power plants and the extinction of wildlife into a common effort to recognize the fragility of our environment before it’s too late. By the year 2000, global warming had become the issue, and activists used the Internet to band more than 5,000 environmental groups together to push for clean energy. Last year’s Earth Day was the most successful on record, with an estimated billion people around the world participating. This year, the theme is “The Face of Climate Change,” with major events planned all over the globe. The main event of the Earth Day celebration will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where civic leaders and celebrities will join hundreds of thousands of environmentally-conscious demonstrators for this special event to galvanize the environmental movement. Charlie heard a voice calling to him from inside a tunnel, “Charlie! I want my five dollars!” Charlie was so surprised he dropped his tools. The voice sounded like his old friend, Andy, who died in a cave-in several months earlier. Charlie had borrowed five dollars from Andy and never returned it. A trembling Charlie approached the dark passageway and confirmed his fear when there before him stood Andy’s ghost shrunk to the size of a twofoot dwarf with a big ugly head, large ears, and a crooked nose. He wore a peaked hat, a leather jacket, and water-soaked leather boots. “Give me back my five dollars! Charlie!” Andy demanded. “I don’t have your money on me, Andy,” Charlie pleaded. “I’ve heard that before,” said Andy, “I didn’t believe it then and I don’t believe it now!” The Tommy Knocker then disappeared leaving a fearful Charlie to wonder what the ghost might do next. He soon found out when his ladder was shaken so hard he almost fell. The loud tapping noise of an invisible drill nearly drove him mad and he just missed being buried by a rock fall. Through it all Andy’s voice taunted, “Give me back my five dollars, Charlie!” “All right, Andy, all right!” Charlie yelled back. “I’ll get your five dollars!” Abandoning his work for the day, the terrorized miner made the long climb to the surface and took five silver dollars from the moneybox he kept under a loose floorboard of his cabin. He then climbed back down into the mine and laid the five coins on the ground where he’d seen Andy’s ghost. “There’s your five dollars, Andy!” “It’s about bloody time!” Andy’s voice echoed from the darkness. “Are you going to leave me alone now?” The Tommy Knocker appeared before him wearing

an impish grin, “Maybe.” He scooped up the five silver dollars and then disappeared. Many legends exist about the Tommy Knockers, their antics and the dangers of ignoring them. It is said if you believe they will work alongside you in the mine and lead you to the richest veins. They may play mischievous pranks, but they will protect you. On the other hand, if you don’t believe and you ignore them, woe to you. Your days in the mine are numbered.

orphanage. “I was a sickly little girl when I was young. I had TB.” After Padilla graduated from high school at the orphanage, she did housework for a doctor’s family, working hard to earn her keep. While living at the Young Women’s Christian Association home in downtown Denver, Padilla was introduced to Al Daley, who would become the director of maintenance for the Denver Tramway Company, which evolved into RTD. After Daley’s retirement, he became a transportation consultant and traveled the world with his wife. The couple lived in Saudi Arabia for two years while Daley consulted on constructing the country’s bus system. “Being a woman in Saudi Arabia at that time was not easy,” Pepper said. “When Dad was invited to dinner with the sheiks, Mom insisted that she went along, where they dined on camel
meat. She soaked up all the traveling and loved it. My brother and I thought she would have culture shock.” Today, Padilla is an effervescent woman who mingles among the residents at Eastern Star Masonic Retirement Campus in southeast Denver. Although she lives somewhat independently in an apartment home, she suffers from dementia. “Everyone turns 102. What’s the big deal,” she said. Padilla was joined for her birthday celebration by her children. Later that afternoon, her brother Al came to reminisce. They had been reunited in their 20s. To this day, Padilla continues to dress up every day and socialize with friends she has made in the senior community. Sometimes, if you are fortunate enough, she will sing an old childhood song for you.
Ermenia “Marie” Padilla entered into this world on Jan. 13, 1914. She was born into a Spanish family of five other children in the coalmining camp of Ludlow, just 18 miles northwest of Trinidad. Her father Elfego was a coalminer, along with her older brother Joe. Her mom Clorinda cared for the family. Coalminers in southern Colorado had been on strike for 15 months against John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, and two other mine owners. The crews were striking for safer and better working conditions. to Mt. Olivet. About the same time, John and Gladys Cheesman Evans financed a detailed 15-year master plan drawn by landscape architect S.R. De Boer for botanic gardens in Denver. The plan would be supported by the Colorado Forestry and Horticulture Association, which had formed back in 1884 at the behest of Henry M. Porter and Walter Cheesman. Their daughters, Gladys Cheesman Evans and Ruth Porter Waring, would be powerful supporters in the drive to create a public botanical gardens. After Denver blessed De Boer’s plan, the Botanical Gardens Foundation of Denver, Inc., incorporated on Feb. 3, 1951. The following year, the $1.5 million project would be presented to City Council, which allowed 100 acres in the southeast corner of City Park for the Gardens.
By 1958, problems with vandalism at City Park led the CHFA to consider moving the prospective Botanic Gardens site to the vacated Mt. Calvary land on York Street. The following year, Dr. James and Ruth Porter Waring purchased the Jacques Benedictdesigned house adjacent to the old Mt. Calvary plot, now owned by the City, and transferred ownership to Denver Botanic Gardens. The official dedication ceremonies took place on Sept. 20, 1959, naming George Whitfield Kelly as the first acting director. Through the Green Thumb News, a publication of the CFHA, Kelly has for years attempted to convince Coloradans that their gardening techniques should be adjusted to suit the state’s unique conditions. Just five years after Botanic Gardens opened, construction began on the Boettcher Memorial Conservatory. The only such facility in the United States made entirely of concrete and plexiglass, the conservatory was specifically designed to channel humidity so visitors would not need an umbrella when they walked through the building. By 1985, Denver Botanic Gardens had be-

come one of only 10 museums in the United States to be accredited by the American Association of Museums. Both the Boettcher Memorial and the Waring house are designated landmarks. Under the leadership of CEO Brian Vogt, the Gardens has over the past few years undergone an extensive expansion, including the addition of a parking garage. In 2014, the Gardens hosted the first Rocky Mountain sculpture exhibition by world famous glass artist Dale Chihuly. One of his glass sculptures is now a permanent fixture of the museum. Along with the York Street location, in March 1973, Denver signed a lease on 750 acres along Deer Creek near Chatfield Dam to be developed and maintained by Denver Botanic Gardens. Today, that area known as Chatfield Farms is a nature preserve featuring trails, a wildlife observation area, display gardens, educational exhibits, a historical farm, a 19th century one-room schoolhouse, working beehives and picnic areas.
