Rambling Around Town Nice to see the metal screening that CDOT has put on some of the Clear Creek Canyon walls on Highway 6. With the spring moisture, snow and ice melting, freezing nights, and just Mother Nature erosion at work, the rocks can dislodge down on the roadway. The highway is going to need some resurfacing in the next few years from the heavy pounding of the aggregate trucks. The price we pay for all of the new construction in metro Denver that is vital to our economy. I had a fun afternoon recently just visiting some of Black Hawk’s casinos (Central City visit will be next). A common thread for all casinos visited is how friendly and professional all of the staffs have become, including the parking attendants who work for your tips to support their minimum wage. Where parking was once scarce, it is easy to fine complimentary valet parking at every casino with full handicap access. Raven was the valet lady at Canyon Casino and is from Hawaii. She couldn’t have been nicer introducing herself and wishing me “good lucks.” Sara, the Canyon pit boss, recognized me with a greeting and I settled in with “Mary,” a senior citizen who was on a roll, hitting bust bonuses and blackjacks. She rides the bus and her silver hair might indicate that she has had a good life and now enjoys some blackjack at her favorite Canyon Casino.
Sara gave me a complimentary meal ticket after playing blackjack for a while. The cards were like they always are, choppy back and By Bob Sweeney forth. I was able to eke out a few winning bets and headed for the upstairs dining room. I had enough credit to enjoy a New York prime steak, but considered the special prime rib sandwich. Diann was an excellent waitress and before long I had a chance to visit with Bridgett, the Canyon food and beverage manager. She related how riding the bus on occasion she sees everyone on the bus reading the Colorado Gambler. She wants to advertise in the paper and we hope General Manager Brian will be back in the paper soon. You readers need to express your support of this newspaper to each casino you patronage. The advertising is the only thing that keeps this newspaper alive, which has supported the rich Colorado history and gaming industry for more than 23 years. Sean and Eric up at Saratoga are always smiling and keeping a keen eye on the “War” derivative blackjack game where a wager can be placed on the first card dealt the player against the dealer’s first card. If the player’s card wins, the bet can then be leveraged onto the regular blackjack wager increasing the player’s advantageous odds.
The house raises their odds by taking all ties, a major advantage for the dealer. However, it is a challenging variety of the standard blackjack game and takes a little more skill as a player when to leverage the bet against the dealer. A challenging new game for more advanced players – you should give it a try. Saratoga also has a fabulous $2 breakfast served up until 11 a.m. daily that is just terrific. Across the street, The Wild Card is full of happy campers who appear to be regulars at this friendly, long-time locally based casino that has a total of three casinos within walking distance. Ameristar, under new ownership, continues to do well and for those desiring the larger Las Vegas ambiance, this is the largest casino in Black Hawk with more than 500 hotel rooms. Guests and players can stroll across the street to the Mardi Gras and Golden Gates casinos. Word has it that Ameristar will be hosting a Wide World of Poker event sometime in 2015 bringing many of the world’s top poker players to Black Hawk. Heading out of town, Carlos at the Monarch Casino is such a gracious and friendly parking attendant. He is just special in how he meets and greets Monarch valet guests. The new 500-room hotel is under construction and the interior of the present Monarch is undergoing a massive renovation with some dazzling new carpet in the remodeled blackjack area. Everything is new and shiny and the www.coloradogambler.com

A Ranch in Wyoming and Utah
P
atrick Coughlin had given himself up to the posse © Anna Lee Ames Frohlich m e m b e r s much more quickly than Fred George did. George was hiding in a washout and was afraid that the posse would shoot him if he emerged. Finally realizing he was surrounded, he surrendered. So on Aug. 5, 1895, the long manhunt came to its conclusion. After a short time, Salt Lake officers showed up to take the ragged, travel-worn murderers into their charge. Coughlin and George did not seem very depressed nor did they seem very concerned about the consequences of their ill-advised behavior. The party of lawmen and their prisoners arrived in Grantsville about an hour after the capture. The whole town turned out to see them, feeling proud of their officers who had brought about the capture. A crowd of about 1,500 showed up in Salt Lake when the 4 o’clock train arrived there with the prisoners. “It was a curious crowd, not a belligerent one, though the sympathy seemed to be largely for the boys.” It was difficult for the Salt Lake officers to keep the crowd under control. It took a fair amount of trouble to get the prisoners to the county jail. All George could think about was getting into his cell for “an hour or so of sleep: I’m dead tried out,” as he said. After he had a bath and looked more respectable, Coughlin talked with a reporter. He laughed about the murders near Wasatch treating them like a pretty good joke. He seemed indifferent to the enormity of what he had done. He denied killing Stagg and laughed about Calverly and Taylor making a run for it when they ran out of ammunition. When asked for a connected story of their great escape, instead of cooperating, he

Beth Chapman (far right, c. 1895) and her friends Margaret and Frances Clark, daughters of Clarence D. Clark of Evanston, Wyo., who served as a U.S. Senator from Wyoming until 1917. The Chapmans’ home was in Evanston when they were not at Neponset Land and Livestock in Utah.
Patrick Coughlin and Fred George in the Randolph jail in Rich County, Utah, August 1895
delighted in telling exaggerated yarns. George knew he had made a fool of himself and was in trouble. He denied doing any of the shooting. He blamed everything on Coughlin. People saw him as the most straightforward to deal with. He had been shot in both legs in the shootout near Wasatch. The first night in Salt Lake, Dr. Wright dressed both wounds. On Aug. 6, the foolish renegades pleaded not guilty to stealing horses and to the killing of Officers Dawes and Stagg. Commissioner Sommer of Salt Lake had them held without bail on the charge of murder and in default of $500 bond each for horse
stealing before having them returned to the county jail. Their earlier companion A.D. Bruce, who they had robbed in Emigration Canyon, was also brought up on horse stealing charges but was discharged when he pleaded not guilty. Coughlin laughed and leered at him. The lesser charge of horse stealing was being dealt with first until it was determined exactly where the murders had taken place. That would be where the murder trial would happen. It was decided that the crime was committed in Rich County, a mile and a half north of the Summit County line and a similar distance west of the Wyoming border. (It was
also about one and a half miles south of Chapman and Strong’s Neponset Ranch where my grandmother Beth Chapman and her family were living at the time of this story.) The trial would take place in Odgen, Utah Territory. The prisoners were taken by train to Ogden under the care of Sheriff Wright and Sheriff Sullivan. Coughlin and George were not pleased about this change of venue. They were not sure about how they would be treated in Ogden. In Ogden, Coughlin continued to be a loud-mouthed braggart even after the trial started. George was quiet and repentant, swearing that he would live an exemplary life in the future. He blamed his misdeeds on whiskey and being drunk when they stole the strawberries and when they started out with the thought of going to Wyoming. The citizens of Odgen thronged the courtroom as proceedings were started. Much of the research for this story so far has been based on court records, so there is no need to retell it. Of interest is Sheriff Harrington’s recounting of the encounter by the sheep wagon in Crandall Canyon. Harrington blames Coughlin for shooting first, but later on, Coughlin insisted
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years
that Harrington fired the first shot. Testimony from two sheepherders is also new to the story. The first witness, Hatch, knew Thomas Stagg. Stagg came to his sheep camp on July 28, two days before the shootout where Stagg was killed. Stagg asked Hatch if he had seen Coughlin and George. Hatch recognized their description. He also testified that Stagg said he would kill Coughlin on sight. The second sheepherder, Moss, told about the same story the difference being that Stagg said that Coughlin had threatened him. (Hatch and Moss are of interest in my broader story because in 1918 Ez Hatch bought Neponset Land and Livestock for Deseret Livestock Company, and, when William Moss retired in 1933, he had been the manager of the Deseret for over 40 years.) The murder trials were drawing to a close. George was behaving in a very sober fashion. Coughlin was described as having a “low-down brutish attitude” and “ one of the lowest degraded and malicious dispositions that ever a human being possessed.” NEXT - the verdicts, which come with some surprises.

The Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun A monument castle atop a mountain
H
igh atop Cheyenne Mountain, at 8,000 feet above sea level, overlooking Colorado Springs, the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun commands a spectacular panoramic view of the Pikes Peak region. Spencer Penrose, who had become a millionaire with Cripple Creek gold, was a generous man. Penrose had established the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in 1928, at the base of the mountain near Colorado Springs. Penrose so loved the beautiful surroundings of Pikes Peak, and especially Cheyenne Mountain, that in the summer of 1935 he began the construction of what he intended to be his future mausoleum, which he called “Shrine of the Sun.” Penrose hired Colorado Springs architect Charles E. Thomas to design the planned 100-foot high tower atop Cheyenne Mountain. As the shrine was being built, Penrose exercised his powers of persuasion to lobby the United States government to have the remains of Lt. Zebulon Montgomery Pike reburied atop Cheyenne Mountain. In a letter written to Secretary of the Interior Hubert E. Work dated May 29, 1936, Penrose wrote in part: “Pike located one of the most famous mountains of America, now called ‘Pikes Peak.’” Penrose’s efforts were met with defeat. Undaunted, Penrose continued with his plans for the monumental shrine. However, during the early construction of the medieval-styled tower, word came to Penrose of the death of his friend Will Rogers. The popular humorist, actor and philosopher had died in a plane crash in Alaska on Aug. 15, 1935. Penrose and Rogers had become friends during one of Rogers’s performances at Penrose’s prestigious Broadmoor Hotel. In honor of his friend, Penrose renamed his monument atop Cheyenne Mountain, the “Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun.” Meanwhile, the construction of the shrine continued. The shrine itself was fashioned from a single gray-pink Pikes Peak granite boulder, included in the list of “Ripley’s Believe It or Not.” The construction of the tower was also

Will Rogers done without wood or nails. The tower was supported with 5,000 cubic yards of the native granite, and 200,000 pounds of steel, all of which were brought to the site by 30 wagons loaded with the materials. When completed in 1937, the edifice resembled a medieval castle in the sky. Standing 114 feet high, the shrine was a squaresided tower that soon became a landmark in Colorado Springs. Penrose then reached out to the family of Will Rogers, offering to pay all expenses to have the remains of America’s beloved humorist buried in the shrine he had named for him. The Rogers family declined, but did attend the opening dedication. Completed in 1937, at a cost of $250,000, the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun monument was dedicated Sept. 5, 1937, during the Will Rogers Rodeo, a tradition lost and then resurrected by Spencer Penrose. Inside the shrine, Spencer’s wife Julie was responsible for the decor. Among the many nationally acclaimed artists who taught summer
Will Rogers Shrine
classes at Julie Penrose’s Colorado Springs Art Society was Santa Fe artist Randall Davey. Julie Penrose chose Davey to paint the stunning mural, depicting the history of Colorado Springs, that dominates the walls of the Will Rogers Shrine. Photographs of Rogers’s life, including his childhood, his life as a cowboy, as well as his professional life as a humorist, performing in Wild West shows, Vaudeville and the Follies, also grace the walls and stairways. From the top of the tower, the visitor can see the town of Colorado Springs below, the vast prairie to the east, the spectacular Garden of the Gods, some 20 miles away, to the north, and the Rocky Mountain range to the West. During the time of constructing the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, Penrose was stricken with throat cancer. Perhaps in a reflective mood, Penrose, along with Julie, created the El Pomar Foundation, “For the benefit of the people of Colorado.” Incorporated on Dec. 17, 1937, it was Penrose’s desire to provide a charitable organization,

based on grant applications, to support cultural and civic institutions. Initially funded with 15,000 shares of El Pomar Investment Company stock, and a cash investment of $129,500. Penrose brought in his young business protégé, the son of his long-time business partner Charles Tutt, as director of the foundation. Among the many institutes supported by the El Pomar Foundation, was the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. Seventy-four-year-old Spencer Penrose, the founder of so many successful business ventures, and benefactor to the community he chose to call home, died at 12:50 a.m. Dec. 7, 1939, at his El Pomar mansion, near his beloved Cheyenne Mountain. Colorado newspapers ran his obituary, lamenting his death while praising his life and achievements. Penrose’s funeral was followed by ceremony at the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, attended by invited guests, family and close friends. Long-time friend and business partners, Harry Leonard
and Charles Tutt Jr., escorted the widow. Colorado Gov. Ralph L. Carr presented an impressive eulogy. Penrose’s ashes were interred into the chapel floor of the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun monument overlooking his beloved city of Colorado Springs. When Julie died in January 1956, her ashes were interned in the mausoleum next to her husband. A separate entrance in the lower level of the shrine allowed for visitors to pay their respects to entombed remains of Julie and Spencer Penrose. The Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, still operated by the El Pomar Foundation, is open to the public year-round, weather permitting. Visitors can reach the Shrine by way of the Russell Tutt Scenic Highway, which passes through the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo located at 4250 Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Road, and winds its way up the mountain to the shrine. A fitting tribute to the man who gave so much to Colorado Springs and the man who meant so much to America.
