Playing Poker in the Southwest

If you have played in other poker rooms across the country, you know that here in Colorado we have some of the best poker to be found anywhere across America based on the variety and availability of games along with the heavy BY betting that LARRY occurs. F r o m JOHNSON our very active $30 - $60 Hold em games with a half kill, to the wide range of tournaments including multiple stops by the Heartland Poker Tour, to the wide variety of smaller limit games that are going 24 hours a day - poker in Colorado is alive and well. But, while we have great poker in our mountain towns, it’s always good to get away and play in some unknown rooms with some new faces. And for me it’s that time of year

as a couple friends and I are preparing to take our annual week long poker trip in early April WHOO HOO! This year we are driving the Denver/ A l b u querque/ Phoenix/ Las Vegas and back to Denver circuit through the southwest with each stop having some great poker. The first leg is from Denver to Albuquerque, New Mexico. The drive is approximately 450 miles, usually takes six to seven hours, and goes through some very scenic country. The idea is to leave Denver on a Friday afternoon and take a nice leisurely drive straight south on Interstate 25, checking into the hotel and playing Friday night and Saturday. The main poker room in town is at the Sandia Resort and Casino

and has 15 poker tables. The room has good low limit Omaha Hi-Lo Split games, $4 - $8 Limit Hold em games, $2 - $5 No Limit Hold em games, the occasional $10 $20 or higher game, and is usually busiest on the weekends. The resort is newer and has very nice hotel rooms, an outstanding 18hole golf course, and a ride up the nearby Sandia Peak Tramway (the longest aerial tram in the U.S.) is a must if time allows. After playing Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque, it’s time to head just over 450 miles (an easy seven-hour drive) west then south to Phoenix, Arizona checking into the hotel and playing Sunday night and Monday. While there are a few good poker rooms in Phoenix, the Talking Stick Resort and Casino in Scottsdale (just east of Phoenix) is the largest poker room in Arizona with 47 poker tables and is the place to play. This is a very professionally run poker room that offers limit and no-limit Hold em poker

games, Stud poker games, all types of Omaha poker games, and daily tournaments. One hint for first-timers is to try the $6 - $12 limit Hold em poker game with a half kill. Each time I have played the game it has been wild and on one occasion, I held the kill for six straight hands dragging over $1,500 in chips. Then on Tuesday its time to leave Phoenix and head northwest just under 300 miles to Las Vegas, Nevada - a drive of only five hours but which crosses the unique new bridge that straddles the border between Arizona and Nevada near the Hoover Dam. Be sure to take a few minutes and walk up the pedestrian walkway to the top of the bridge as the views are spectacular. The final stop of the southwest circuit is fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada - which had more than 320 poker tables just on the famous Las Vegas Strip alone at the end of 2015. Check into the hotel and plan on playing Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday. The

beauty of Las Vegas is that there are many choices of limits and types of games 24 hours a day. I have found when I do this trip from Denver, to Albuquerque, to Phoenix, and finally to Las Vegas the games I play in Las Vegas depend on how my trip has gone financially. If winning - I tend to play bigger games and more aggressively; but if losing a bit, I tend to stick to the lower limits, play conservatively, and work on getting back to even for the trip. Then it’s time to head home to Denver - a 750 mile, 12 hour drive north then east. And remember that the speed limit in Utah is 80 miles per hour and the drive is usually lots of fun - although more so if the trip was a winning one. So - if interested in a nice trip through the southwest and playing in some great poker rooms; hit the road and enjoy. Remember - have some fun and play your game!

Easter Easter traditions and how they began By Rosemary Fetter

E

aster combines both Christian and pagan traditions, celebrating both the arrival of spring and the Resurrection of Jesus, according to Christian theologies. Beliefs and traditions have merged over the centuries to create a pastel festival of religious celebration, family gatherings, blossoming flowers, delicious foods, hardboiled eggs and enough sugar to keep a child bouncing like a bunny until Mother’s Day.

Origin of the word ‘Easter’

The secular version of the Easter celebration dates back to the ancient Saxon feast of Eastre (or Eostre), a tribute to the Teutonic goddess of spring and rebirth. Celts celebrated Beltane Eve on April 30, followed by a festival, dancing around the Maypole and feasting on May 1. In spring, Christians observe the Resurrection of Christ, which, according to the gospels, took place around the time of the Jewish Passover. Since Beltane also took place in spring, it was relatively simple for the Church fathers to substitute one holiday for another. Over the centuries, Eastre became Easter.

Easter Sunday

Confusion over the date of Easter arose among early Christians from different backgrounds. Those brought up in the Jewish tradition regarded Easter as an extension of the Passover Festival, so the holiday fell on a different day of the week from year to year. Non-Jewish Christians, on the other hand, wanted Easter celebrated on a Sunday. To settle the matter, the Roman Emperor Constantine called the Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325. According to the Easter Rule, the

holiday should be observed on the first Sunday after the full moon following the vernal (spring) equinox. If the full moon rose during Passover, Easter would be celebrated the following Sunday. Thus, Eas- ter always falls between March 22 and April 25. Since 1582, the date has been calculated by the Gregorian calendar, which was never accepted by the Eastern churches, which stuck with the Julian calendar. This year, the Eastern churches (Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox) will observe Easter on April 15.

Colored Easter eggs

The egg has been a symbol of rebirth for the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks, the Persians and many other early civilizations. In Medieval Europe, eggs were used for decoration on New Year trees, on Maypoles and on St. John’s trees in midsummer. The affluent would exchange eggs covered with gilt or gold leaf, while peasants colored their eggs by boiling them with flowers, leaves or even insects. The gorse blossom was best for yellow, spinach leaves for green, logwood for purple, and the fluid of the cochineal produced red.

Fabergé Easter eggs

The world’s most valuable Easter eggs were produced by the Russian goldsmith, Peter Carl Fabergé between the 1870s and 1917. Working with a team of nearly 500 designers, goldsmiths, jewelers and carvers, he created some of Europe’s greatest treasures, many of which became part of the Forbes collection.

The Easter Bunny

The pagan goddess Eastre took the hare as her mascot, since prolific bunnies understandably symbolized fertility. In one interesting legend, the goddess, obviously having a whimsical, Paris Hilton-type mo-

Easter bunny? Bonnets? Colored eggs? A parade? ment, transformed a robin into a snow hare who could lay colored eggs. The confused creature then proceeded to distribute eggs from a nest – ergo, the Easter bunny. (We have since replaced the nest with that plastic grass that gets stuck on everything.) The Pennsylvania Dutch (i.e. Germans) brought the Oschter Haus, or Easter Bunny, to America. Since Germans are the country’s largest ethnic group, many of their traditions and foods have become incorporated into our culture, like the Christmas tree, Oktoberfest, strudel and sauerkraut.

Easter basket

Because Easter follows Lent, a time of fasting and abstinence, eggs were once a forbidden food until Easter. Traditionally, eggs and other foods would be brought to church in a basket to be blessed on Holy Saturday, and then taken home to be eaten as part of the Easter breakfast.

Easter ham

Although in many areas, the Easter food of choice is lamb, referencing the Passover lamb and Christ, the lamb of God, Americans seem to prefer ham. The pig was considered a symbol of luck in pre-Christian Europe. After a long winter, peasants would consume the last of the smoked meats from the previous autumn at Easter.

Hot Cross buns

The Saxons baked the twice-scored biscuits to honor Eastre, and even the Romans enjoyed the food. In ancient Greece, a similar sacred bread was called “bous” meaning ox, from which the word “bun” probably originated. Early church fathers created a Christian version, re-interpreting the oxhorned image as a crucifix. The English custom of eating spiced buns on Good Friday arose during Tudor times, when a London law forbade their sale except on Good Friday, at Christmas and at funerals. The English believed that hanging a hot cross bun in the house on these days offered protection in the coming year.

Easter parade

The Easter parade was first held in New York in 1870s. Originally, churchgoers would carry Easter flowers from St. Thomas Church to St. Luke’s Church. The social lions and lionesses would attend services and parade down Fifth Avenue to give

PAGE 4

onlookers – and each other – a chance to show off their new Easter outfits. The 1948 movie, Easter Parade, with Fred Astaire and Judy Garland, takes place in the early 1900s.

Easter bonnet

Interestingly, Easter was not celebrated by the entire nation until after the Civil War. Women who wore the dark colors of mourning for years staged a small rebellion and began wearing colorful flowered hats and elaborate corsages at Easter. Their hats were adorned with blooming and fresh flowers and sometimes paper, ribbon, feathers or seashells.

Easter lily

Popular spring flowers include the tulip and the daffodil, but the beautiful, trumpetshaped white flowers of the lily have long symbolized purity, innocence, hope and new life – the essence of the holiday. In turn-of-the century Denver, society lioness Louise Hill took the Easter lily as her personal symbol.

Gemstones & Minerals

The world’s five largest gold nuggets

There have been many claims for the “World’s Largest Gold Nugget.” At the time that some of these large nuggets were found (mostly in the 1800’s) they were indeed the world’s largest. However, as time went on and gold strikes occurred all over the world, larger nuggets were found and the title was shifted from one nugget to another. What was needed was a clear definition of “gold nugget.” The type of nugget that most people are familiar with is the true gold nugget; i.e. a blob of gold formed by nature. The other type is called “reef gold;” i.e. gold that appears imbedded in rock, usually in quartz. When the rock is removed from around the gold, the gold can be recovered in one piece. Reef gold is synonymous with the terms ledge, lode, and vein gold. There are many claims to the world’s largest gold nugget. Some say the world’s largest nugget in existence, others say

the world’s largest recorded nugget and some say the world’s largest nugget on display. These five nuggets are graded by weight. Now, the largest five. (This list has changed since I first wrote this article in February, 2009.)

5th Largest Nugget

Hand of Faith Nugget: This 54.69 lb. nugget was found in 1980 in Western Australia and is the largest nugget on public display in the world. Using a metal detector, it was found lying in a vertical position just below the surface by Kevin Hillier behind his trailer home. It was sold to the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino for a $1 million and is now on display at that casino in Las Vegas.

4th Largest Nugget

Newmont’s Normandy Nugget: This 56.18 lb. nugget was found near Kalgoorlie,

Western Australia in 1995. It is currently on display in the Perth Mint in Australia.

3rd Largest Nugget

The Golden Eagle Nugget weighing in at 71 lbs. was found by 16-year-old Jack Larcombe on January 8, 1931 in Larkenville, Western Australia. The nugget required two men to lift it and was given the name due to its resemblance to a bird.

2nd Largest Nugget

The Pepita Canaa Nugget weighing in at 134.06 lbs. was found on September 13, 1983 by miners at the Serra Pelada Mine in the State of Para, Brazil. It currently resides in the Banco Central Museum in Brazil.

1st World’s Largest Nugget

The Welcome Stranger Nugget weighing in at about 158 pounds was found three inches deep in Victoria, Australia in 1869 by John Deason and Richard Oats. Since

there were no scales capable of weighing a nugget of this size at the time, it was broken up into three pieces and weighed at a bank. In 1897, an obelisk was erected near the spot where the nugget was discovered. A replica of the nugget is in the City Museum, in Melbourne, Victoria.

Honorable Mention

The Holtermann Nugget was by far the largest single mass of gold ever found: however, it was not a true nugget - it was reef gold, meaning it was composed of other minerals imbedded in the gold. It was found in New South Wales, Australia, in 1872. It weighed about 630 pounds (about 400 pounds of gold when melted). Holtermann was the manager and part owner of the Star of Hope Mine where it was found. The “nugget” was broken up and smelted except for a piece that Holtermann chipped off for a souvenir.

Humor

In like a lion and out like a practical joke

It’s a beautiful long as seasons have spring morning and been around. Spring a coworker shows up weather is Mother at work with a box of Nature’s equivalent doughnuts to celeof pouring a bag of brate. Isn’t that nice! Skittles into a bowl of You take a big bite M&Ms. out of one and disAfter a long cold cover it’s filled. You winter, you walk love filled doughoutside one beautinuts—except when ful morning and say, BY DOROTHY ROSBY they’re filled with “Spring is here.” And drosby@rushmore.com mayonnaise. April the next day, you Fools’! slip on the freezing rain. April Whose idea was it to dedicate Fools’! That’s how spring is. It’s an entire day to practical jokes here! No, it’s not. Yes, it is. No, anyway? There are no other it’s not. March is in like a lion holidays designated specifically and out like a lamb. Then the for bad behavior—except maybe lion comes back and chases the New Year’s Eve. Some blame the lamb around until the lamb goes Romans. Some blame the Celts. into hiding for a few days. Some blame the adoption of the Spring has been making fools Gregorian calendar and the en- of human beings—and lambs— suing change of the New Year. since time began, and humans But I think April Fools’ pranks have followed suit. Luckily, we have been around as long as confine our tricks to one day. April has been around—even as Civilization couldn’t survive an

entire season of mayonnaise in our doughnuts and thumbtacks on our office chairs. I’ve endured a few April Fools’ Day pranks in my life. There was the fake fire alarm that got me out of the shower with the shampoo still in my hair. And there was the false claim that I had a flat tire, which caused me to panic unnecessarily. I retaliated by telling the prankster she had spinach in her teeth. She might have fallen for it too, were it not for the fact that she hadn’t eaten spinach in a good long while. It was the best I could do on short notice. Spring weather has played far worse tricks on me. There are springs I’m forced to use my umbrella and my snow shovel in the same week, and run my air conditioner and my heater on the same day, and eat ice cream

and soup in the same meal. Actually, nothing forces me to do that. I do it of my own free will, and not just in the spring. Many a cool spring morning, I ransack my house looking for a jacket—any jacket—and find none. I finally have to do without. I get to work cold and late, only to find the jacket and three others hanging on the back of my office door, right where I left them yesterday because it was too warm to wear one when I went home. The jokes on me. In the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. Or so said poet Alfred Tennyson. A middle-aged woman’s

fancy lightly turns to thoughts of spring sweaters and cropped pants, which isn’t nearly as poetic. Either way, it all has to wait until the shoveling is done. Despite it all, spring is still my favorite season—except in the fall when fall is my favorite season. And autumn has one big advantage over spring; there’s no October Fools’ Day. Going Green

Go green and save at restaurants The fine dining of the holidays are over. Are you looking for some green and saving ways to eat out and not spend a lot of money? Do you often get more food than you can eat on your restaurant plate? Do you sometimes waste leftovers that you took home? Here are some suggestions for dining out and keeping a lean green tab. Skip the pricey drinks and dubious free refills. If you just order tap water, you can save about $2 per person. Prices of beverages have skyrocketed even though they advertise free refills. On a $10 meal that is at least a 20% discount. I was perplexed when dining at a local breakfast café that they only offered $3 bottomless coffee from a thermos bar of hot

the regular dinner crowd, typically from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Look at the restaurant’s website for advertisements and information. When ordering takeout, order from the children’s menu if you do not want a full meal. Or split a regular meal with a friend. Splitting a meal these days is socially acceptable and economically savvy. While some restaurants charge a minimal charge for splitting, most are very accommodating. Even if you have to pay a buck or two to split, it’s still better than paying for two meals you cannot eat completely. If you’re embarrassed about sharing, don’t be. If you must explain, say you are doing your green duty to the earth by not over-consuming. Many restaurants are so accommodating they’ll split the meal in

coffees, and moreover you even had to walk over and get refills yourself! Look for discounts at restaurants that offer a reduced-price menu for seniors and children if you or someone in your party qualifies be sure to inquire if this doesn’t show up on the regular menu. Typically, these discounted menus offer smaller portions at significantly reduced prices. Also, many restaurants have lowpriced daily specials that are not on the menu. So before you get your heart set on a regular menu item, be sure to ask about unadvertised specials. Many restaurants, in an effort to build business during their quiet hours, offer half-off or some other bargain “early bird” priced meal, but only if you dine before

the kitchen rather than handing you an extra plate. Before you opt for a full meal, check the appetizer menu and soup/salad specials. You’ll find generous portions minus the addons like sides. If the price is right, just order an appetizer and have it served as an entrée. You’ll fit right in. If you are with a small group, scan the menu for bargain priced family meals that cost less per person. your high Call schools to find out where you can purchase local restaurant discount books. Also, you can buy gift certificates for selected restaurants in all parts of the country for half of the face value at restaurant.com. A $25 gift certificate is typically $12.50; one with a $10 face value is about $5. You can

purchase the quantity you desire for these listed restaurants. This is a site worth checking out. Also, you can check online at Groupon. com and Living.com for great deals at restaurants in your area that are looking for new customers. Often you may find great values for 30%-60% off your meal. If you are traveling, pretend you are a tourist because many times restaurants have special offers directed at tourists that you can take advantage of as well. Stop in the lobby of a local hotel or tourism office and check out the local attraction brochures. You most likely will find all kinds of offers from local restaurants. Think lunch instead of dinner as lunch prices are usually much cheaper. Many restaurants have lunch menus slightly different from the dinner ones with the difference being portion size and price. Ask the waiter if you can order from the lunch menu if you are dining during the dinner hours, and you will save a lot.

THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 25 Years

Trail’s End

Colorado’s Lady Gambler Poker Alice

lice Ivers was not the average Victorian lady of the 19th Century. Following a tragic accident, she was forced to support herself. She didn’t choose the conventional means available to women at the time, such as marriage, laundry service, nanny, or even becoming a teacher. Young Alice loved card games and embarked on a colorful career as a lady gambler among men. She became a well-known figure in Colorado history in and gambling dens across the West. She was born February 17, 1851, in Devonshire, England, the daughter of a school teacher. The family immigrated to America in 1861, settling in Virginia. There, Alice attended a female boarding school for a time, before the family traveled west to the silver mining town of Leadville. Alice completed her education in the Leadville schools, where she made friends and attended social events. The flaxen-haired beauty gained the attention of several bachelors in the mining town. Eventually, 20 year-old Alice met and married Leadville mining engineer Frank Duffield. Gambling was not only a lucrative business and a way of life for many in the Colorado mining camps, it was, as it is today, a great form of entertainment. Frank, an enthusiastic card player, enjoyed the many gambling halls in Leadville. Alice often accompanied her husband, preferring the entertainment to evenings at home. Watching the card games, Alice quickly caught on to the card play and strategy involved. Alice became a proficient player in poker, faro, and blackjack. It took quite a bit of persuaPAGE 18

sion with the proprietors of the gambling houses, but eventually, Alice was allowed to play cards with the gamblers around the green cloth table. Both Frank and Alice enjoyed their gambling hobby and did fairly well, by all accounts. When Frank was killed in a tragic mining explosion, Alice became a widow, alone and with no support. A bold move in that era, Alice chose to make her living with the gambling skills she had perfected; a make or break move for a female gambler. Reluctant in the beginning, to say the least, Leadville saloons soon saw a boost in business with Alice dealing faro. A petite beauty, with blue eyes as sharp as steel, Alice was soon in high demand, both as a poker player and a dealer, in saloons all over town. A lady gambler running the tables was a first for Leadville, and Alice was certainly a sight for sore eyes to many miners on a Saturday night. Gaining in fame and popularity, Alice left Leadville for the gambling circuit. Gamblers would often move from boom town to boom town, going where the action (and the money) was. In this manner, Alice, nearly always the only female gambler along the circuit, soon acquired the nickname “Poker Alice.” From Alamosa to Pueblo, and from Central City to Georgetown, Alice attracted customers, and thus was welcomed in gambling halls. In short, Poker Alice was good for business. Not all gamblers were taken with the lady gambler. Jack “Lucky” Hardesty sat down for a game of faro. When Alice took a chair at the table, Hardesty loudly voiced his objections to the female card shark. Alice held her own against the verbal assault. Eventually she was dealt a hand with snide

remark about not crying when she would lose. But Alice didn’t lose, she took the entire stake of $1,500, beating everyone at the table. “It was the damnedest faro game I ever saw. The game see-sawed back and forth with Alice always picking up the edge, a few times it terminated only long enough for the players to eat a sandwich and wash it down with a boiler maker.” Gambler Marion Speer, 1872. Alice never again sat down at a poker table without a gun. She always carried a .38 revolver in the pocket of her dress, and often had another weapon in her handbag. As her reputation grew, Alice expanded her

gambling operations by traveling throughout the West, where she attracted men, and was always welcomed by willing card players. On a particular evening in New Mexico, the lady gambler drew excellent cards. It was at Silver City’s Gold Dust Gambling House, where Alice broke the bank. The dealer was forced to close the game, with Alice winning over $6,000. This afforded her a trip to New York City, and a shopping spree for fashionable clothing, a habit she would often repeat. Returning to Colorado, Alice found a fine place to deal cards, smoke cigars and enjoy good whiskey, in the booming silver

camp of Creede. She knew both Bob Ford and Soapy Smith and was in town when Ford was killed in 1892. Alice eventually left for South Dakota, where she made her way to the gaming tables of Deadwood. There, she met Warren G. Tubbs, a part-time gambler and house painter. Like many gamblers, Tubbs was enchanted by Alice, yet Alice also enjoyed Tubbs’ charm. Alice found need for her .38 revolver when a drunken card player pulled a knife on Tubbs. Alice calmly pulled her gun and put a bullet in the man’s arm. Alice and Tubbs eventually married and stayed in Deadwood for a time. She was the better card player and the primary support of the Tubbs household, an unusual arrangement even for Deadwood. In time, and mostly due to Alice’s winnings, the couple and their growing family, there would eventually be seven children, bought a ranch just outside of Sturgis, South Dakota. Yet, Alice proved to be luckier at cards than love. Sadly, Tubbs contracted tuberculosis. Alice stayed at the ranch and by his side, until he died of pneumonia in the winter of 1910, the same year they would have celebrated 34 years of marriage. Widowed again, Alice loaded her husband’s body into a wagon and drove to town for burial in the local cemetery. It seems as if finances dwindled with Alice not working during this period. Having pawned her wedding ring to pay for the funeral, Alice went back to dealing cards in Deadwood. She married again, but was widowed in 1913. Alice moved back to Sturgis, where she lived out her days her way; with her stogies, smooth whiskey and a good game of cards. April 4 - 17, 2017
