He’s not worth $1 million a game or something like $47 million or Houston’s $72 million; wow. My pick would be Robert Griffin III, who shined in the beginning for the Washington Redskins. If we get into a crunch, we can bring back Manning out of retirement, wouldn’t that be a hoot. Fans loved Tim Tebow, he was very popular, but that isn’t very apt to happen under any circumstance. I would bet that with Osweiler leaving, thoughts have turned back to Manning playing one more year – not out of the realm of possibility? Wouldn’t that be a shocker after his great retirement speech. Best he retires, but never say “never.” Basketball fever is at hand and this will occupy the nation for the next few weeks reaching the Final Four. The “Final Four” in GOP candidates for president has now whittled down to the final three after Rubio suspended his campaign. He is like Trump in many respects; straight shooting, hard hitting, and hitting the establishment. Americans are angry and tired of the same old results with a failing nation and a rising national debt that will bankrupt our country in just a few more years. Americans are tired of the coddling of Iran, not using our strength to wipe out ISIS, and letting too many jobs move to foreign countries. We need higher tariffs, stop factories from closing and moving to Mexico, and take better care of our past and present veterans. This anger is widespread and the election is heating up with protesters

Gemstones & Minerals
Red emeralds, what?
T
wenty-four m i l l i o n years ago, pressure within the earth pushed up a mountain range now called the Wah Wah Mountains in Juab County, Utah. When the volcanic forces subsided eons later, they left behind a small catch of red emeralds. These gemstones, also known as red beryl, are found nowhere else in the world except in the Black Range in New Mexico. However, the stones in the Black Range are not gem quality and are not large enough to be faceted for use in jewelry. Green emerald is the most famous member of the beryl family, which includes aqua-
marine (blue), morganite (pink), golden beryl (yellow) and red emerald (also known as red beryl or bixbite). White or colorless beryl is known as goshenite. In 1904, red beryl was discovered at Topaz Cove, Utah, 100 miles north of the Ruby Violet project by Maynard Bixby, an American mineralogist. The mineral was named “Bixbite” in his honor. Concentrations were non-economic and of non-gem quality. In 1958 gem-quality red crystals were discovered in the Wah Wah Mountains of Beaver County, Utah, by Lamar Hodges. Hodges was prospecting for uranium at the time.
There were 12 claims staked and worked by the Hodges family. The Hodges family was getting an average grade of finished goods of approximately one carat per ton. Hodges sold the mining rights to the Harris family. In 1971, the red crystals were identified for the first time as red beryl crystals by the Gemological Institute of America. Red beryl is so rare that most people don’t even know that it exists. Red emeralds are so rare that in the 50 years since their discovery, fewer than 60,000 carats have been cut, or faceted into jewels. Only one red emerald is found for every 150,000 diamonds. Cut stones can bring more than 1,000 times their weight in gold.
Colorado gem cutter, Mark Krivanek, who shapes many of the gems recovered at the Ruby Violet Mine in Utah, said that internal stress within individual red beryl crystals can make faceting difficult and this accounts for the low percentage of carats that each stone can
produce. He said that sometimes after having studied a crystal for hours or even days under a microscope, trying to figure out how to get the best or largest gem from the stone, a red emerald can still shatter unexpectedly while being shaped. The largest red emerald crystal ever found weighed 54 carats. An average faceted red emerald weighs only .15 carats. Top quality natural red beryl crystals from the Ruby Violet Claims that have been faceted sell for as much as $10,000 per carat. Only 10 percent of the gemstones cut from this rare material exceed one carat in weight. To date, the largest faceted red emerald weighs 4.5 carats.
Going Green
Green ways to dispose of unwanted books
W
hat are some green ways to dispose of those dusty books sitting on a shelf or in boxes in your garage? If you find books feel too much like family, maybe you should give them to interested family members. However, if you really enjoy reading books, you might want to join a book swap club like paperbackswap.com, sell them online, or donate them to a recognized charity for a tax credit.
Swap books
A good book to me is a like a pet. I want books and pets to
have good homes. After reading paperbacks or hardcover books, I often give them to friends. Or I can post them on my paperbackswap bookshelf and get a trade
PAGE 4
credit when someone requests one. Then I list books that I want in trade on my club’s Wish List. I have traded more than $300 worth of books in the last few years with membership in this club. I pay the postage when I mail a book to a club member, but club members pay the postage on books I receive. Another way to clear off your bookshelves and get different books to read is visiting a recreation or senior center where you can trade books on the honor system at no charge
Sell books
If you have collected many books or inherited some lately and they are in excellent condition, you might want to sell
them. There are multiple online sites that buy used books. Rather than try to find all of the individual companies that purchase used books I suggest you go to BookScouter.com. This is a one-stop shop that searches many different online book buyers with one click. You’ll quickly discover which book dealer, if any, is interested in buying the books you have. BookScouter helps you sell your books for the most money by comparing offers from more than 50 buyback vendors with a single search. This allows you to quickly and easily find who is paying the most for your books. BookScouter is 100 percent free to use with no registration required. Most buyers make it easy to send the books by paying for shipping and allowing you to simply print a prepaid mailing label. Once your books are received and inspected for damage by the vendor, you’ll be sent your payment. It’s that easy! Several years ago, I set up
an account with Amazon.com, which charges a commission but only when books sell. I have sold countless books this way. Unlike eBay, Amazon collects the money for me before they send me the notice of where to ship the book. Twice a month they transfer the money into my bank account. It’s a no hassle way to sell books. My listings do not expire unless I cancel them.
Donate books
If you choose to donate your books, the IRS will allow you to take a fair-market tax deduction when you donate the books to a recognized charitable organization, like the Salvation Army or Goodwill. If you go that route make sure you get a receipt with spaces to properly value your donations. You don’t want to get audited only to discover that the values you assigned to your donated items are not anything close to what the IRS estimates as the value of your books.

They came from every state in the East and Midwest. They came by steamboat and then on horseback, on muleback and on foot. With knapsacks over one shoulder and rifles over the other, the young crowd, younger 30, were described as having light hearts and a thin pair of breeches. They left behind their jobs, homes, wives and children. Many of them set out to cross the Kansas prairies for the 800-mile trek with no more than a week’s provisions. The Pike’s Peak Transportation Company advertised that it would carry passengers from St. Louis, Missouri, to the Pike’s Peak area for $125 per person, including 50 pounds of baggage. However, when the wagon trains started across Kansas, only the baggage was transported. The passengers had to walk the full distance to the Rockies. More than half of the Pike’s Peak or bust enthusiasts busted very early and walked back to the Missouri River when they ran out of food and faith. Forty thousand persisted and forced open a new and shorter trail

across Kansas called the Smoky Hill Trail. The effect on Denver was instantaneous. Log cabins were faced with sidings, frame buildings were erected with board floors and glass in the widows. Shops opened along the main street. Soon there was a meat market, a drugstore, a bakery and a barbershop. Of the prospectors who continued westward into the Rockies, 25,000 of them settled around the earlier mining camps. Each cluster of huts gave itself a town name, like Mountain City or Central City. A few miners built rude cabins but most slept on the ground. Each man cooked his food on an open fire before his tent or wagon. There were the proverbial bacon, beans, flapjacks and coffee. The frying pan, tin plate and coffeepot were recognized along with the pick, shovel and pan as tools of the miner’s trade. The camps had no government and neither did they have any sanitation rules. The first legalized organizations were the miner’s courts and Claims Clubs, made up of groups of men who vowed to support the validity of each other’s claims, at the end of a shotgun if necessary. Men from all across the nation and from many foreign countries came to Colorado. Doctors, lawyers, preachers, farmers turned miners, unschooled lads and university graduates jostled each other in the narrow gulches and voted in mass meetings to make laws for their districts. These spontaneous groups soon became the law and were quoted as saying, “We never hanged on circumstantial evidence. But when they were found guilty they were hanged. There were not writs, or appeals or pardons.” In hangings, all the jurymen held the roped and pulled on it at a given signal. Perjury and theft were punishable by ten to 25 lashes on the bare back, banishment and confiscation of property. Women were rarely among the first arrivals at frontier mining camps, yet they moved into the remotest areas with astonishing celerity and the fall of 1859 saw the first all-white child born in Auraria. When wives or sweethearts arrived, six months to a year behind the men, the entire community turned out to give them a welcoming dinner and dance. Those who arrived by express coach needed the welcome. The trip from Omaha

took eight days and nights of continuous riding, with three stops in twenty-four hours. Every stop offered identical menus: rabbit, buffalo or antelope steak, soda biscuits and black coffee. A woman’s duty was to learn how to shoot, for there were frequent Indian scares, and part of each day’s routine was target practice with a pistol and rifle. For single girls who had the courage to try frontier life, it was particularly good hunting. Celibates under thirty inhabited most of the area and the girls were rushed from the instant of their arrival.

Dogs were crucial to any rancher who was trailing and pasturing sheep. There were two principal types of pastoral dogs used, one was the guardian dog who protected the sheep from predators, chiefly coyotes and wolves. Among those used were: Great Pyrenees, Akbash dogs and Mastiffs. Many types of dogs were used for herding. In the west it was mostly different types of Shepherds and Collies, referred to as “sheepdogs.” The following is a story about one particular
side of Evanston, Wyoming, circa 1896. The first band led by Darwin B. Lyon ran into five days of dry hot weather. Sheep, men, and horses were all suffering. Finally one man was prevailed upon to go ahead alone to try to find water. All the dogs went with him, and except for Lyon’s own dog, none of them returned until morning. Lyon’s dog returned in the middle of the night refreshed from finding a drink. With the assistance of this one dog, Lyon forced the 6,000 sheep in the direction of the water. Once the sheep got there, they were so crazed that they

did not drink but just ran madly up and down the stream. The dog had to keep holding them there until they finally learned that they could assuage their consuming thirst. The heroic dog was sired by a short-haired, smooth-coated, black and tan sheep dog that had been imported from Scotland by non-other than Gov. Leland Stanford (of the Central Pacific RR). The Chapman’s purchased the dog from Lyon for $50. Lyon regretted this later. For years, the sheep men of Wyoming valued the descendants of this dog. (Miss. Valley Historical Review. Sebastian does warm up to guests after a while, a really long while. I’m just not sure we want all of our company to stay as long as it would take him to warm up to them. In the meantime, we have a friendlier pet: Mr. Tweeters the canary. And if anyone has motive for murder, it’s him. We had Tweeters for three years before we got the cat. I’m sure he remembers fondly the good old days when there was no cat leering at him or dozing on top of his cage. I wouldn’t blame him for plotting a little revenge of the canary. It’s a good thing he’s not the size of a golden retriever.
