I’m so grateful for the many parking lots that now exist in Black Hawk and Central City. It is so easy to use valet or public parking lots compared to the old days when we had to park on the hilltop and were bused to the casinos. The parking lot attendants are really efficient, friendly, and do a great job in all kinds of weather. Remember to give them a buck or two when you pick up your car or truck. The average price for a Final Four ticket was almost $2,000 to attend the final games in Indianapolis. That’s as much or more than the Super Bowl. I’ve enjoyed the games and the cream always rises to the top with the higher seeded Bud Wells teams ending up in the final games, no Cinderella teams this year. We always like to see the underdog prevail but not this year. If we had some casino sports books, we could make a wager on the outcomes. Maverick Sharp Tony Thorpe A news story out this week said that a Las Vegas casino could lose $1 million if Michigan State makes it all the way. I think their million is safe, but even casinos can lose money on bets. www.coloradogambler.com coloradogambler cogambler I’ve never been a large sports better, maybe $10 a game just for fun. Meet Saratoga Casino 2014 Employee of the Year
Natreece was excited to join the Saratoga team over a year ago as a gift shop team member. After only a few short months, she had the opportunity to transfer to Human Resources. Natreece is a great addition to the team with her bubbling personality and courteous manner. She is an allaround enjoyable person to have in your company! She is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Metropolitan State University of Denver. When asked about her degree and work experience, Natreece said, “It is awesome to be a part of
a company that allows me to work in an area of one of my passions.” Another passion of hers is traveling. “While it is not every day I can hop on a plane, Jamaica is where my heart is. I enjoy the rich culture and the wellrounded individuals who live with passion, dedication and grace. Traveling has taught me the importance of planning, hard work and respect. I apply these values to my everyday life by turning to my resources, organizing my activities for efficiency and working on my goals every single day, which allows me to be the best that I can be.”
An amazing run - $1,800 in 18 minutes
L
ast Saturday morning, I had an amazing run at the poker table. My wife BY and I had stayed LARRY over Friday night JOHNSON and I headed down early for an hour’s of play in the $30 - $60 ½ kill limit hold em game. There were two games still going from the night before and I jumped in with $1,000 in red chips and checked the time on my phone so I would be on track to meet my wife - it was 10 a.m. Then, beginning with the 2nd hand after I sat down I was tapped on the shoulder by the amazing Mr. Poker and he sure smiled on me. I woke up to pocket 3’s and called a $30 bet. It was raised twice so 4 players paid $90 to see the flop of 3h - 4s - 9h. There was a bet, I just called with my set of 3’s, and the guy just behind me raised with the pot being capped at $120 for 3 of us. The turn brought an Ac, I bet, and one player raised. After I reraised, the 3 of us were in for $180. The last 3 hit the river giving me quads and I bet, with one caller. Nice - just under $800 profit on the hand. As I was stacking chips, the dealer Kerry (one of the smoothest and steadiest in town)
PAGE 6
poker talk
dealt out the next hand and I looked down to an 8c - 3c. I made a loose call of $30 and all of a sudden there were 8 players in the pot. The flop came 3h 7c - Jd and I had bottom pair with a back door flush draw. It was checked to me, a player bet, and 4 of us called. The turn came a Kc, improving my flush draw. The player behind me bet $60 with a player at the end of the table raising and I had a decision to make; do I call with a flush draw along with bottom pair where I could improve with another 3 or an 8? I called $120, there was no raise and 3 of us saw a Qc hit the river - giving me the flush. One player bet with the other two of us just calling. Both players had two pair and I won almost $700 profit and the kill button in effect “Killing the Pot.” The kill is in effect when a player wins two hands of $300 or more in a row and increases betting to $50 $100 for the next hand. As I was still trying to stack the chips in front of me from the 2 previous hands, Kerry dealt out the next and I looked down to pocket Kings. This was getting interesting. I raised and when the dust cleared there were 4 callers for the flop - and as it was $100 to call there was already $400 in the
middle of the table. The flop came 10h - 7d - 4c and I bet $50 with 2 players calling. The turn card was the Jh and here is where I really made a mistake - I checked. Even worse, I checked again on the river when the board paired with the 7c. I won $400 profit on the hand with two pair but missing out on doubling that with some aggressive betting. Lesson learned. I still had the kill button, posted $50 out of the unstacked chips in front of me, and Kerry dealt out the cards. I peeked down to an Ac - 10h, there was no raise, and 4 of us saw the flop of Jh - 7s - 4d. Amazingly, we all checked and the turn came the Qs. The bet was checked to the button and he bet with two of us calling $100. The river brought the Kd, giving me the Broadway Straight. I bet with one player calling and I dragged another $500 profit for my 4th consecutive pot. Going for my 5th hand in a row! I put out $50 on the kill button as I was furiously stacking chips in front of me and Kerry dealt me the Jd - 3d with no raise and the flop
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years
came Kd - 5d - 3s, giving me a flush draw and a pair. Alas, I received no help on the turn or river and lost $500 on the hand. I tossed the kill button in, quickly finished stacking chips and leaned back, taking a glance at my phone - it was 10:18 a.m. Mentally counting the stacks of $5 red, $25 green and even a few black $100 chips haphazardly stacked in front of me, I realized I had just over $2,800 in front of me - for a $1,800 profit in 18 minutes, even after the loss on the last hand played. So - time to go meet my better half! I played a few more hands until the blinds came to me, finished racking up, and headed to the cash window. Whew, these types of sessions are few and far between! Enjoy and be ready for them as always seem to come at unexpected times. Most importantly - ensure to walk away with the cash. Remember - tip your dealers well during these streaks and play your game.

He was a man of northern England and lived in York. His personal motto (from old French) which speaks of his character was LOYAULTE ME LIE, “ Loyalty binds me.” I’ll tell you more about Richard in a later article. The night of March 22 we were among the fortunate who had tickets to attend the Service of Compline at which the responsibility for the remains of King Richard III was transferred from Leicester University to Leicester Cathedral. Earlier we had mapped out a route to get past the throngs. It happened to go very close to where Richard’s body had been found. Our invitations helped us with passage through the masses waiting to see the cortege. People lined the streets for 22 miles from the Battlefield of Bosworth to the Cathedral, 35,000 in all. Ouray’s ballplayer
Smoky Joe Wood
‘Nobody Threw the Ball Harder’ In the 1890s, the silvery San Juans were filled with miners who lived in towns with strong community ties. Towns such as Silverton, Telluride and Ouray boasted churches, schools and ball fields. America’s favorite pastime was not just the rage of an era, it was a passion of the players and the fans. One of those fans was 10-year-old Joe Wood. The youngster would do anything he could to get to the local baseball field. He cut corners on home chores and schoolwork. After his daily chore of setting type for his father’s newspaper, he would head off to the ball field. Wood became the mascot, batboy and eventually a player for his hometown team in Ouray. By age 18, Wood became a professional ball player and later, a legend in the sport. Wood was born Howard Ellsworth Wood in Kansas City on Oct. 25, 1889, the second son of John and Rebecca Wood. Howard and his older brother Harley were both given nicknames at a young age. Howard became Joe and Harley became Pete. Joe loved baseball and played endlessly on empty fields with the neighbor boys. John Wood, a teacher, lawyer and newspaper publisher, was struck with gold fever. After several excursions to Alaska and California, John Wood eventually moved his family to the San Juans of Colorado. In 1897, the Wood family traveled by covered wagon to Colorado, settling in Ouray. During the long trip, Joe kept his ball glove on the front seat of the wagon as they traveled across the flats of western Kansas and over the mountains of Colorado. When Joe finally made the Ouray team, he had already honed his skills as a ball player. Those skills were enhanced by the altitude. These mountain ball players took to the fields at elevations that would shock the east coast teams. At the ball fields of Ouray, at 7,800 feet, Telluride at 8,500 feet, and Silverton at 9,302 feet, balls flew far in the light air. It was at Ouray that Joe cracked the bat that made the ball soar, and his throw would smack harder at lower altitudes, where it was later said, “No one threw harder than Smoky Joe Wood.”

Colorado baseball players in the 1880s. John Wood arranged a try-out for his son with the newly formed team, the Hutchinson, Kansas, Salt Packers, of the Western Baseball Association. The 16-year-old pitched well enough to earn $20 to finish out the 1906 season. Joe Wood was signed to a $90 contract for the 1907 season, becoming one of the youngest professional ball players to ever play the game. From his first step to the mound, Joe seemed to make history. “Manager Doc Andrews says Joe Wood Can Deliver the Goods.” It was an unusual cold and windy
May day when Joe pitched his first shut-out game, bringing his team a 5-0 win over Wichita. Joe pitched smartly and also switched off to play second base, shortstop, or left field. During the last day of the season, Joe pitched a double header against Springfield, and hit two home runs, finishing his career with the team with an 18-11 record, and struck out 224 batters. For the 1908 baseball season, Joe, signed a contract with the Kansas City Blues, for $250. It wasn’t long before Joe’s abilities and personality endeared him to the Kansas City fans, as well as

the sports writers. The Kansas City Post wrote, “Joe Wood, the phenomenon from Hutchinson, can pitch some, play second some, cover short some, and go some at various other stations.” By mid-season, Joe’s stats were not good and he was traded to the Boston Red Sox. The team needed a young talent to follow their star pitcher, the great Cy Young. On Aug. 24, 1908, Joe Wood, at age 18, made his starting debut as pitcher for the Boston Red Sox against the Chicago White Sox. It wasn’t a great game, and while the Kansas reporters were
kind to Joe, the Boston reporters were not. So started a four-year love-hate relationship. Paul Shannon, sports writer for the Boston Post, wrote, “Wood has nice curves and a pretty drop ball but has got to learn that a pitcher who uses nothing but curves is not destined for a lengthy stay in the big leagues.” This same reporter would later give Joe Wood the nickname “Smoky Joe” during the 1911 season. That was the breakout season for both Joe and the Boston Red Sox. Joe pitched in 44 games, won 23 games, compiled an E.R.A. of 2.02, threw a nohitter against St. Louis, and struck out 15 batters in one game. That was the game that made “Smoky Joe Wood.” Ty Cobb remarked, “A lot of fellows in my time shortened up on the bat when they had to--that’s what the boys should try against this good pitcher.” For Joe, Cobb was an inspirational figure and the two had the occasion to take the field together, making history in 1911, which was the inaugural year of baseball’s first All Star Team. Originally played as a benefit game, it turned into a traditional event acknowledging the great players of the game. The 1911 players included Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Joe Wood’s team roommate for 15 years, Frank “Homerun” Baker, and pitchers Walter Johnson and Joe Wood. Baseball historians consider it the greatest single team ever gathered on the field. The year 1912 was exceptional for Smoky Joe, the Red Sox, and American baseball. Boston’s baseball season opened in the newly built Fenway Park. With the new era, it was Smoky Joe Wood’s best season, winning 34 of 39 games. Smoky Joe completed 35 out of 38 starting games, becoming the youngest pitcher in the American League to do so. The winning season earned the Boston Red Sox entry to the World Series, which most historians consider the “greatest World Series of all time.” In the eight game series, it was Wood who pitched against the New York Giants in the final tie-breaking game, winning a 3-2 victory and the World Series title. He stayed with the Red Sox for three years, seeing Babe Ruth join the team in 1915. Smoky Joe completed his career with the Cleveland Indians. In 1920 they won the World Series. He became the second player ever in baseball history, the first being Babe Ruth, to be a starting pitcher in one World Series and a starting position player in another.

burg is one of the most spectacular rooms of the former Winter Palace of the Czars. It was rebuilt in 1837 as a drawing room for the wife of Czar Nicholas. It features columns and mantelpieces in malachite mosaic set against white walls decorated with figures representing day and night. The room is further ornamented with malachite vases and other artifacts made of malachite during the early 19th century from the deposits in the Ural Mountains. Around 1836, the largest mass of malachite ever known was discovered at the Demidoff mine in the Ural Mountains. It was in this mine that a single, banded mass contained more than 1,100 tons of fine material. Another block of malachite weighed 30 tons and took 125 horses to haul the mass from the mine. Malachite is found in the Russian Ural Mountains, France, England, Africa, California, New Mexico and Arizona. Africa furnishes the largest and best supply of malachite today.

As one of the most ancient gems known to man, the oldest malachite decoration on record is estimated to be 10,500 years old. This decoration was found by archeologists in the Shanidar Valley, Iraq, a site of early Neanderthal culture. Malachite beads believed to be more than 9,000 years old have been found near the ancient city of Jericho in Israel. The first decorative use of malachite in Russia was to make buttons for court dresses. Russia’s malachite quarries were reportedly able to extricate and deliver blocks of malachite that weighed more than 20 tons. In 1835 miners working a malachite deposit exposed a malachite boulder of
the highest quality that weighed more than 260 tons. Nineteenth century Russian mine owners worked their mines mercilessly to meet the growing demand for malachite, leading to such a glut on the world market that large batches were ground up to be used in paint. Russian malachite has been mined in the Ural Mountains since the early 19th century and has been used decoratively to form huge columns within buildings, giant vases, useful pieces of furniture and delicately carved artifacts. It has been used to make the enormous malachite pillars of St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg, Russia. St. Isaac’s Cathedral is the fourth largest domed cathedral in the world. Construction began in 1818 and took 40 years to complete. It contains eight massive malachite pillars in the mosaic-covered wall decorated with icons that separates the altar from the rest of the church. be driven away and the child w o u l d s l e e p peacefully. In some regions of Germany, this green mineral was supposed to protect the wearer from the dangers of falling and to warn of impending disaster by breaking into several pieces. When the image of the sun was engraved on a piece of malachite, the stone acquired the power of protecting the owner from evil spirits, enchantments and snakes. Malachite is not very durable when used for jewelry stones. The solid colors are the most durable but they are not sufficiently hard to retain a polish for any length of time, except in the form of beads, bracelets and brooches. Malachite is occasionally coated with colorless wax, or rarely impregnated with plastic and/or other hardening agents to improve durability and appearance.

alachite has a vivid, slightly bluish-green to yellowish- green color which makes it one of the most attractive ornamental materials in the mineral kingdom, particularly when it is banded in two tones of green. The name of the species is derived from the Greek word for “mallow,” since the color is similar to the leaf of this plant. One unique use was in the eye makeup that the Egyptian women used. The stone was often referred to as the Peacock Stone because of the eye-like pattern it has, which resembles the eye-like pattern of peacock feathers. Because of its banded structure, which often suggests the form of an eye, malachite was worn in some parts of Italy as an amulet to protect the wearer from the spell of the “evil eye.” If a piece of the stone were affixed to a child’s cradle, it was believed that all evil spirits would

They have books and movies to rent or download, newspapers and magazines to read, computers to run, high tech devices to rent, and special programs for both children and adults. It’s very thrifty and green to utilize these facilities of a tax-funded library instead of going out and buying these things. All you need is to sign up for a free library card from your local library. It’s a new form of recycling and it helps maintain a cleaner planet earth. For example, I can imagine there must be millions of old hardplastic VHS movies in the landfills since DVDs were introduced several years back. Every year technology comes out with new devices that make our old ones obsolete.
Books and movies
After checking out what movies won awards at the big Academy Awards night, I put in requests for the movies I went to check out for free with my library card. There always is a wait for the latest movies, but I am willing to delay viewing these top movies for a month or two. In past years, I have watched many award-winning movies on DVDs that I borrowed from my library. Some county libraries, such as Douglas County, now allow one to download movies on their iPads and Nooks. In past years when our children were small and I was planning a two-week family vacation in other parts of the United States, I chose to check out these guides instead of purchasing expensive travel guide books. These books contained detailed information about attractions in different areas of the country so that I could find interesting

activities for my husband and I and our four children almost every day of our trip. High tech devices At Arapahoe County libraries, one also now can borrow all sorts of high tech devices for free, including iPads, Nooks, cameras, GPS units, and video cameras. Because these are expensive devices, borrowers will need to sign an agreement and will want to return the item on time to avoid incurring late penalties. Colorado residents can obtain a free Arapahoe Library card by contacting http://arapahoelibraries.org/technology.
The downtown Denver Public library currently has two new high tech 3-D printers that actually turn out plasticlike objects. The objects might not last forever, but you can utilize these expensive printers for free. Only trained library staff can operate the machines, but you can download free software to program your 3-D project, design it, and submit it to the library. You will be notified when your print request is complete, and you will have seven days to collect your project. Remember that “complete” doesn’t always mean “successful.” The library, however, will notify you when your project is done even if it doesn’t come out perfectly. For more information, visit www.denver library.org.
Activities
Larger libraries throughout Colorado offer a multitude of programs that are too numerous to mention. Contact your local library to learn more about fun programs. Activities can range from storytelling for children to guest speakers for adults. Discussion programs about books include everything from Shakespeare classics to bestselling novels to practical, self-help non-fiction.
