The Last Hand Farraddays Restaurant Continued from page 2 having recently visited New Zealand, where he dined on rack of lamb in that sheep-raising nation. Jennifer welcomed us at the 5 p.m. opening of Farraddays, where we had made an advance reservation. We were greeted by Director of Food and Beverage, Jake Deeds, who related that the restaurant had recently hired a new chef “De Cuisine” David Hermann, who has a wealth of experience in private and country-club cuisine. He said Farraddays welcomes large groups and caters to anniversary and birthdays occasions in the spacious dining areas. Shortly thereafter Chef Hermann presented Mike and myself with appetizers of a crab and watermelon and a cup of lobster bisque as samples of his gourmet talents. They were both delicious and a real treat. The menus are encased in unique metallic covers. Dining selections are presented as appetizers, soups, salads and side selections for two. Having had the crab appetizer, we chose the crisp iceberg wedge salad with smoked bacon and blue cheese dressing—a delicious selection with a touch of soy sauce that really enriched the dressing flavor and salad taste. THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years
May 17 - 30, 2016
By Steven Langer, Proprietor, Two Penguins Tap and Grill Welcome craft beer enthusiasts, and thank you for reading The Gambler’s newest (weekly/biweekly) column. With craft beer sales approaching an estimated $1.3 billion annually in the state of Colorado it will be our pleasure to offer all things Craft ongoing, from information on local breweries, beer tours, educational material to information on local craft beer festivals and events. Whether you are a beer novice or a seasoned veteran, or perhaps just a locavore who is interested in learning more about what our Colorado brewers are bringing to market, we look forward to providing insight on these pages. First, the facts. Craft brewers are defined by the Brewers Association as “small, independent and traditional” producers that brew fewer than 6 million barrels per year. By way of perspective, New Belgium in Fort Collins, the fourth largest brewer in the U.S., produced just under 1 million barrels of beer in 2015, and the largest
craft brewer in the country, Yuengling Brewery in Pennsylvania produced just over 3 million barrels a year. In 2015, craft brewers in the United States produced 24.5 million barrels of beer, which represents 12 percent of all beer brewed in the country. This follows double digit growth in seven of the previous nine years. In Colorado 26 percent of all 2015 beer sales fell within the craft category, producing 1.8 million barrels locally. Craft brewers in this country account for almost a half million jobs. According to the current Brewers Association website, there were 284 breweries in Colorado at the end of 2015, up from 126 in 2011. Anecdotal reports show that there is a new brewery opening in our state virtually every week. Colorado ranks 2nd in per capita craft breweries by population at 7.3 breweries for every 100,000 adults, and produces 14.1 gallons of craft beer for every adult in the state. As I like to say, “beer has become more than just a breakfast drink”. Enough beer nerd statistics. IPA, Pilsner, Porter or Stout? Draught, can or bottle? Dry Dock, Dad’s and Dudes, Diebolt or Blue Spruce? The perfect pour in the perfect glass. The best of the craft beer music scene. Date night or family fun? Seasonal beers and old standbys. We hope you will come along for the ride while we provide all the craft beer news that’s fit to print, right here in The Gambler.

A Tailing Tale Heidi Chalet has tales to tell
S
o m e t i m e back, I had an opportunity to sit down with Roxie Morris at her home in the Heidi Chalet, which is located in the forest north of Black Hawk. Roxie purchased the property several years ago and says she fell in love with the home and its history the first time she saw it. After only a few moments inside, I understood her affinity for the place. From the original dark hardwood, floors to the tin tile ceiling in the kitchen the home sparked my writer’s mind immediately. I knew the house had tales to tell and so did Roxie. She shared that it was her understanding that the house had some connection to the Central City Opera but she hadn’t uncovered exactly what that connection was. The expansive front room, dining area and large kitchen with the once six bedrooms upstairs told that this was no ordinary home. Family homes were not

A Tailing TaLe By Maggie Magoffin
Maggie@maggiempublications.com built like this in the early 1900’s. After a little digging, I learned a number of interesting facts about the Heidi Chalet. In Carolyn Bancroft’s book, Gulch of Gold, she describes the views from the lodge just as I witnessed them from Roxie’s summer room. “Spread out to the southwest were the remains of the once rich mines of Nevadaville along the northern slopes of Quartz Hill and Alps Mountains.
In the Colorado sunshine the hills wove a magnificent tapestry of aspen and pine greens, embroidered in the soft oxidized colors of the mine dumps-greys, creams, and rusts-set against a background of white and granite snow peaks, Goliath, Rogers, Warren, Evans, and Sawtooth in a group and, farther west, Gray’s and Torrey’s.” It is obvious from her detailed description that Ms. Bancroft spent time during the 1950’s in the Heidi Chalet. Whether it was a lodge at that time or private residence is not clear. However, she does tell that it was on the front porch of the Heidi Chalet in 1929 that Walter Sinclair mulled over the possibilities of renovating and reopening the Opera House. Mr. Sinclair and a friend were lodging at the Heidi Chalet during an auto tour of the then distressed areas and former mining towns of Central City and Black Hawk and were fascinated with the façade of the boarded up old Opera House. As Ms. Bancroft’s story goes,
Ida Kruse McFarlane visited the Heidi Chalet on the very day Mr. Sinclair and his friend were discussing the Opera House. Mr. Sinclair commented to his friend, “Let’s go back and inquire in the village if there’s any possible way of seeing the interior.” Ida, overhearing Mr. Sinclair’s referral to Central City as a village, was appalled and corrected him. She told him sternly, “That run-down little village is Central City. And I think I have the key to the Opera House in my desk. If you care to motor there after lunch, I will look. My husband is about to sell it to a mining concern to settle an estate.” That conversation took place in the dining room of the Heidi Chalet and launched what would one day become the Central City Opera Association. The building had been locked up and boarded shut in 1927 when after nearly 25 years of working to keep the Opera House open Peter McFarlane, Ida’s father-in-law and owner of the precious jewel of Central City brought the curtain down for the final time. From 1910 to 1927, Mr. McFarlane operated the venue as a movie theater, continually losing money on the enterprise and was no longer able to maintain the deteriorating old building. Several times throughout the late 19th and early 20th century the Central City Opera House went through a number of rescues and renovations as it appears so did the Heidi Chalet. Roxie is not certain of the date the house was built but it seems to have been at some point in the early 1900’s. From what information I was able to find, it was a mountain lodge where vacationers to the “Little Kingdom” could stay and enjoy mountain life and apparently excellent meals. The Chalet has had a number of owners over of the years and each has left their mark on the building. It has deteriorated and been resurrected a number of times much as the Opera House. In 1932, after undergoing over two years of renovations by the Opera Association, the Central City Opera opened with Camille. The cast, including Lillian Gish, stayed at the Heidi Chalet. And, from what recorded accounts I
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years
was able to find, it seems that over the years many casts of the Opera may have stayed in the beautiful mountain retreat. At last, I forced myself to leave Roxie and her lovely home with a promise that I would one day revisit and hopefully be able to fulfill her dream of having a book written that is set in the Heidi Chalet. It will of course be set in the years the lodge was occupied by Central City Opera performers. What a tale that will be!

Gemstones & Minerals
The Largest Diamonds Found in the United States KELSEY LAKE DIAMONDS
In 1997 a 28.3-carat yellow diamond was uncovered at the Kelsey Lake mine, which sits at 8,000 feet on a rugged mountain about 45 miles northwest of Fort Collins. It was the fifth largest stone found in the United States. The Kelsey Lake diamond was cut into a 16.87-carat cushion-shaped stone and sold in New York for over $40,000. The owner of the mine also uncovered a 14.2- and a 9.4-carat diamond before selling the mine. The new owner, Gary Westerholm, president of the company, estimates that the mine’s kimberlite ore, a gray rock, hides between 60,000 and 250,000 carats of diamonds.
THE UNCLE SAM DIAMOND
The Uncle Sam diamond has the distinction of being the largest diamond ever to be found in North America. It weighed 40.23 carats and was unearthed in Arkansas’ “Crater of Diamonds,” a kimberlite pipe, in 1924. This fine-quality stone was fashioned into a beauti-
ful 14.42-carat emeraldcut by the New York City diamond-cutting firm of Schenk & Van Haelen. It was once sold to a private collector for a price said to be in excess of $50,000. It is now owned by Peiken Jewelers of New York City.
PUNCH JONES DIAMOND
One of the largest United States diamonds weighs 34.46 carats. It is a greenish - grey crystal that was found in 1928 on Rich Creek near Peterstown, West Virginia. It was discovered by Grover C. Jones and his son, William P. “Punch” Jones while playing horseshoes. It was not positively identified as a diamond until 1943, when it was examined and tested by Professor Doy J. Holden. It is now on permanent display in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
THE SEARCY DIAMOND
In 1926, while chopping cotton in a field near Searcy, Arkansas, a 10-year old girl named Pellie picked up a “pretty stone.” Because of its unusual size, shape and color, she kept it. No one in the commu-
nity would listen to the little girl when she suggested it might be a diamond. However, after she married a farmer named Howell, she induced him to take the stone to a jewelry store in Searcy. (Searcy is approximately 140 miles from the well-known kimberlite pipe, “The Crater of Diamonds,” near Murfreesboro, Arkansas). The jeweler advised her to send it to the geology department of the University of Arkansas. The University, in turn, suggested showing it to Tiffany & Company in New York City. In 1946, Mrs. Howell wrote to Tiffany’s about the diamond; they later bought it for $8,500. The Searcy weighs 27.21 carats and is described as a well formed hexoctahedron of a fine yellowish color. It is still uncut and is kept on display at the Tiffany store as the third largest diamond ever found in the United States.
THE DEWEY DIAMOND
The Dewey diamond was one of the first diamond discoveries in the United States. It was a well-formed but poor quality 23.75-carat octahedron that was found in 1884 by a workman named Benjamin Moore, at Manchester, Virginia. Although Moore placed an arbitrary value
of $4,000 on the stone, he sold it to Captain Samuel W. Dewey, a geologist and mineralogist, for a reported $1,500. He called it the Or-i-Noor, or Sun of Light. After being on exhibition in New York City, it was cut into an 11.15-carat stone. Eventually, Dewey had to mortgage the diamond and was unable to redeem it. It then became the property of J. Anglist, who, in turn, mortgaged it for $6,000 to John Morrissey, a boxer, gambler and a politician. Since Morrissey’s death in 1878, the whereabouts of this stone has been unknown.
THE EAGLE DIAMOND
The Eagle diamond is a 15.37-carat, light-yellow diamond that was found in 1867 on a farm near Eagle, Wisconsin. The discovery was made in hard yellowish earth at a depth of about 40 feet during a well digging operation. The farm wife sold the stone seven years later to a Milwaukee jeweler for $1, thinking it was topaz and sued him when Tiffany’s found it was a diamond for which they had paid the jeweler $850. The crystal was then sold to J.P. Morgan, who later donated it, still uncut, to the permanent collection of the American Museum of Natural His-
tory, New York City. In 1965, it was stolen from the museum, together with other valuable gems, and has not yet been recovered.
THE STAR OF ARKANSAS DIAMOND
The Star of Arkansas is one of the largest diamonds ever found in the well-known kimberlite pipe - “The Crater of Diamonds” - near Murfreesboro, Arkansas. The rough stone weighed 15.33 carats and was flawless and colorless. It was elongated and thin. The Star was cut into a long, narrow, shallow 8.27-carat marquise-shaped stone. The value of the finished gem was originally established at $11,000 to $15,000; however, its fine quality, uncommonly large size for an Arkansas diamond led several leading jewelers to reappraise the stone at from $25,000 to $100,000. The Star of Arkansas is unmounted.
THE EISENHOWER DIAMOND
The “Crater of Diamonds,” near Murfreesboro, Arkansas, yielded this 3.11-carat diamond in 1957. The name was chosen by the Dallas, Texas, Gem & Mineral Society because it resembled the profile of the then President Eisenhower in caricuture. In 1958, it was mounted, still uncut, as a pendant with a platinum chain by its discoverer and owner, Mrs. Ruth McRae of Irving, Texas.

Medicine Water
Trail’s End
Leader of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers On the High Plains, near the Bunch of Trees, also known as the Smoky Hill River, the TseTsehese-Staestse, Cheyenne for “The People,” followed their leader, Mi-HuhYou-I-Nup, Medicine Water. The warriors, known as “Dog Soldiers,” had led many of the survivors of the horrific massacre at Sand Creek north to the Smoky Hill River. Included among the survivors was Mo-chi, who had grabbed her murdered father’s Hawkins rifle before fleeing north from Sand Creek. Later, Medicine Water and Mo-chi were married, following the traditional Cheyenne custom. As head chief of the Cheyenne Bowstring Warrior Society, commonly known as the Dog Soldiers, Medicine Water proved himself long ago as the rightful chief of this courageous and loyal society of warriors. Medicine Water was born in 1835 in the Yellowstone Country of today’s state of Wyoming. He was the fifth of six sons born to Medicine Water and Old Yellow Hair. Medicine Water and his brothers all became members of the Cheyenne Bowstring Warrior Society and noted chiefs. Two of his brothers, Earrings and Alights-On-Cloud, were killed by the Ho-Nehe-TaneoO (Pawnee) in 1852. Following their deaths Medicine Water and his brother, Iron Shirt, rode together as Dog Soldiers for several years until younger brother, Man-On-Cloud, was old enough to join them. ManOn-Cloud proved himself as an effective fighter beside his brother and soon became a chief of the Dog Soldiers. As the U. S. Army continued to build forts and allow the white man to cross through and even settle in the Cheyenne lands, Medicine Water took matters into his own hands. The Cheyenne people were determined to fight for the preservation of their traditional way of life. Thus, as head chief of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, Medicine Water declared war. On the morning of September 11, 1874, Medicine Water, along with his wife Mo-chi and brother, Iron Shirt, brutally attacked an innocent family. The German family were traveling by covered wagon near the Smoky Hill River, when the Chey-

enne warriors attacked. John L. Sipes, great-great grandson of Medicine Water and Mo-chi, recounted the Cheyenne Oral History of the incident: “During the month of the Cool Moon [September,] Medicine Water and his warriors encountered a white family that had camped on the Bunch of Trees River. This was on the land the Cheyenne considered theirs, and the whites were seen as intruders. Medicine Water reacted in retaliation for members of his family who had been murdered at Sand Creek and the Washita River.” Nevertheless, it was a horrific, bloody, deadly ordeal. John Ger-

man was the first to die followed by his only son, Stephen, who received a lance driven through his chest. An Indian threw his tomahawk at John’s wife, Lydia, breaking her skull in two. As the older daughter, Catherine, fled for cover, another warrior shot an arrow into her thigh. Then Mo-chi joined the murderous warriors and wielded her hatchet to kill and scalp those the Dog Soldiers had missed. After killing Rebecca Jane German, Mo-chi then killed and scalped Joanna German, as her long blond hair was considered a prized trophy. John L. Sipes, later reflected on Mo-chi’s actions of that day: “Mo-chi I do not think had rage in her as much as she had sadness and anger from the losses and deaths of her family and when she
was attacking the German family I think she saw no difference in what the soldiers did at the [Sand Creek] massacre to her family and her people.” With five dead bodies laying on the ground, Medicine Water’s Dog Soldiers began ransacking the wagon. Inside the wagon, the remaining German family, Sophia, Julia and Adelaide, were huddled together. Five-year-old Adelaide began crying uncontrollably. Just as a warrior was about to shoot the child to stop the annoying crying, Mo-chi grabbed the little girl, saving her life. While gathering the animals, a warrior discovered Catherine hiding in the tall grass along the river. He grabbed the teenager and threw her on his horse, and took her to the wagon where her sisters were. There, Mo-chi took charge of the four German girls, who were now hostages of the murderous Cheyenne band of Dog Soldiers. When the warriors finished plundered the wagon and set it afire, Medicine Water placed each one of the German girls on a horse with one of his trusted comrades. Then the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers fled the scene. Medicine Water led his warriors’ south, crossing the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle, where he met with Comanche leader, Quanah Parker. After smoking the war pipe with Quanah Parker’s band of Comanches, Medicine Water and his band of Cheyenne warriors agreed to join forces in protection of their homeland from further encroachment. In the summer of 1874, Medicine Water led the Cheyenne, alongside Quanah Parker’s Comanches, in a raid at the old Adobe Walls trading post. Adobe Walls was a small fortress inhabited by 28 buffalo hunters and located on the Staked Plains in the Texas Panhandle. Several lives were lost on both sides. The conflict finally ended with Billy Dixon’s famous rifle shot knocking an Indian off his horse nearly a mile away. As the Indians fled the Staked Plains, Medicine Water led his warriors back to their homeland. In the middle of winter, the Cheyenne were facing near facing starvation. Stopping in the Indian Nation of Oklahoma Territory, Medicine Water sought food and shelter for his people. When Colonel Nelson Miles learned of Medicine Water’s presence in the region, he demanded the release of the German sisters and

that Medicine Water surrender. The exchange took place at Darlington Agency, Indian Territory. While the German sisters were released from captivity, Medicine Water surrendered. He, along with Mo-chi and 31 members of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers were arrested. John Sipes recounted the family oral history of this event: “The Old ones say our family fought to the bitter end until they could fight no more and just had to surrender because their horses gave out and five columns of troops were moving in on Medicine Water from

all directions and five different forts. So it was best for his people and his family that he and Mo-chi and the warriors follow the Arrow Keeper and surrender.” Medicine Water, his wife, Mochi, and 31 others were transported in chains to Fort Marion, Florida, as prisoners of war, without benefit of trial or legal defense, where they were held for three years. Mo-chi died of health complications received during her imprisonment. Medicine Water died several years later, it is said of a broken heart.

And I’ve learned a few things about dandelions in the process. One, dandelion roots go deep and if you don’t get the whole root, the plant regenerates like a star fish on steroids.
Two, if you pluck the flower but leave it laying on your lawn, it will go to seed just like it would have if you’d left it on the plant. That kind of defeats the purpose—like drying your clothes on permanent press and then leaving them wadded up in the dryer. And three, I have a really big lawn. There’s no way I can keep up with my dandelion digging and still hold down a full-time job. And that explains why right now, our lawn looks like we’re Green Bay Packers fans, which we are not. That’s not to say I don’t think dandelions are beautiful. They’re bright; they’re cheerful. They’re nutritious and delicious. What more could I ask for? Just one thing. Fewer of them.
