the players can bet on the dealer hand busting. “Magic 21” pays a player big odds if a bet is placed anticipating a blackjack hand. Texas Hold’em is a poker player’s dream for betting, seven cards and betting from beginning to end. This makes for huge pots and surprises on the last card played – making straights, flushes, pairs and quads. Gambling is about putting your money and skill up against the house and in poker the other players. You are in control of three things: your time, your cash and your emotions. All three very vital to your success at the tables. Strange as it may seem, people do have lucky days, weeks, months and even years. The old saying, “If I didn’t have bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck at all,” is so true. Poker players will lament about being so cold and “off their game” and it can last for months. One thing I notice in my poker-playing friends is that sometimes they enjoy playing the game too much and forget, “You don’t have any friends in a poker game.” Meaning you are there to win, not just to have fun losing your money and spending your time. The low stake pizza games around the bars are fun, but they can breed bad habits with players who start playing

bad hands just to call and stay in the game. Never play short of cash, as the saying, “Scared money never wins,” is very true, so save your money for the right time, day and place. Pick your favorite casino, time of day, and when you are emotionally ready to win, lose or draw, play to win, not just for fun. If you win, quit when you’re ahead. Players envy winners and no one cares when you lose. If you win, be thankful and go over in your mind what you did that made you a winner by examining your play. If you lose, do the same thing, it is said, “Good cards make the player,” but if you get good cards, do you make the most of them and bet correctly. Lastly, don’t let your emotions get the best of you; don’t gamble if you cannot afford to lose. Like prize fighting, you are going to take some hard punches before you ever get a knockout. Down on your luck? Take a break, save your money, change games, play some golf or take in a baseball game. Don’t fret about losing, life is a gamewww.coloradogambler.com of chance and only God knows what the future holds for all of us each minute of the day.

Meet Saratoga’s new GM

Mother Lode Oxygen Bar receives dispensary license

Shawn Harris is newest addition to Black Hawk’s gaming community

The Mother Lode Oxygen Bar in Central City is now a licensed dispensary for marijuana. The Mother Lode is located next to the Visitor’s Center in Central City at 109 Eureka St. Man-

He’s a corporate guy who came up through the casino ranks in Saratoga, N.Y. He’s all business, and all about customer service. “I was the slot director in charge of all the gaming machines early in my career,” said new General Manger Shawn Harris. “I began in the industry at the Mohegan Sun, the second largest casino business in the world and helped open the first of our casinos in Pennsylvania. I grew up with them, but four years later I had the opportunity with Saratoga Casinos in New York, which is what brought us here.” Harris, a New Englander born in Connecticut, admits that his young family loved Saratoga and that it was hard to leave a place that had given him such career opportunity. “But the minute we arrived in Colorado, this feels like home. We’re going to be here a long, long time. My wife interned at the Olympic Training Center and loved living here. So when this came up, we said, ‘Yes’ immediately,” he said. Harris is impressed with the gaming industry in Colorado and is quick to voice his appetite for the challenge that brought him here. “This is the most competitive market I’ve ever seen. That’s the kind of challenge I love. The need to be on the top of your game is obvious; there is no room for error,” Harris said. At the same time, Harris can spot the major difference between the northeast and Colorado. “People talk about the rat race in the northeast, but frankly, as competitive as this market is, people are more welcoming. They are so nice,” said Harris. “We are here to serve our customers in the very best way and I think I fit in well here.” He is enthusiastic about the Black Hawk market and about the many changes he’s planning for Saratoga Casino, formerly known as Fitzgerald’s. “We’re revamping our main floor. There are enough buffets in this market. So we’re innovating; we’re bringing in the Mill City Chop House to upgrade guests

dining experience options, and shortly will begin adding a main floor bar,” said Harris. “Instead of just a service bar, we’re reconfiguring it to give our guests more space to gather and regroup. While we do that, we’ll be redrawing our entire slot floor for a better flow.” Saratoga may not be the biggest of the Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek gaming areas, but it is the casino investing long-term in the customer experience. “When we’re done with renovations we’ll have put $10 million in improvements into the casino, now and in the near future,” said Harris. “We wouldn’t be spending the money if we didn’t believe in this market place and that our guests here are worth it. My core value is to strive for perfection. I want my guests to have what we call a ‘peak experience.’ I’m passionate about that. Our nearly 200 employees are passionate about it. We’re not the biggest, but we take care of our guests because they are important to us.” Harris, who clearly loves people, sees his role as not just another casino general manager. “I want to get involved in the community. I’m excited to get to know people,” said Harris. “This

is a weekend market and I understand that. I came up through the ranks and you know I won’t lose my connection to the gaming floor. Saturday nights – you know I’m here. So, if guests have a concern, they can tell me directly.” Saratoga’s new GM is quick to admit that he already feels like he’s been here his whole life and likes the friendliness of Colorado most of all. “I was filling my car at the gas station and a fellow notices my New York plates – got to fix that soon, by the way – and strikes up a conversation. Would that happen anywhere else?” he said. There’s a slight sports team problem. Harris, who’s an avid golfer, is a diehard Boston Celtics fan. “Can’t help it, I am,” he says. “Just wait, my kids are probably going to switch to all the Colorado teams. They already know the colors. That might take me a bit,” Harris said. He appears to have the time for his sports transition. “I hope that Black Hawk is my last stop,” said Harris. “I’m kind of loyal. I have young kids [ages 8, 4 and 2} and I don’t want to move again. This is home now.”

Fresh Mexican Grille debuts at Canyon Casino By Jan Wondra

It’s fresh. Oh so fresh. And it’s fast. Oh, so fast. The Fresh Mexican Grille has debuted in Black Hawk, and it’s sure to bring folks looking for something new, up the wide staircase of the Canyon Casino, located at 131 Main St., to the second floor. The second floor is home to the newest dining offering in Black Hawk. “All the food is made fresh, daily,” said Suzie Darcy. “You can’t get any fresher. We chop it, prepare it, we use roasted Hatch green chilies for our signature green chile sauce.” The menu is what is called a “pick your own” – pick your style, pick your meat, pick your fillings, even pick your salsa. Guests can chose tacos, burritos, Mexican bowls, or quesadillas. After selecting the base, you next choose your freshly-grilled meats of chicken, beef, steak, pork or carnitas. Then select from an array of fillings from rice and beans to choppedthat-day olives, onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, queso and sour cream. There’s a slight extra charge for avocados, guacamole and fajita veggies. Prices are modest, from $5 for

the quesadillas to $9 for the tacos and burritos, in keeping with the pricing at fresh food courts. “We do six different salsas, all handmade,” said Jeff Irvine, server on the Fresh Mexican Grille since it opened nearly a year ago.

“They range from mild pico de gallo or corn, to mango and green chili. People really like our green chile salsa, but it has a kick to it.” Guest with Canyon Club cards should be pleased to learn that their cards entitle them to $2 off

food items at the Fresh Mexican Grille with a one card per day – one item limit, per person. One base point on guest’s Canyon Club cards can even get them a free entree. “This is such a great option,”

2.7 leads aluminum-light F-150 to Redstone By Bud Wells

Our most recent jaunt was a very easy, carlike drive and quiet ride in the new aluminum-bodied Ford pickup. The 2015 F-150 Lariat SuperCab 4X4 carried Jan and me to Redstone for her birthday. The new truck, even in its lessthan-spectacular gray metallic finish, looked good parked outside the old Redstone Inn. The F-150, you know, showed up this year with aluminum body panels in place of steel, initiating a great amount of buzz among supporters and skeptics. Many weigh the benefits of the lighter structure against the potential added cost of repairing aluminum over steel. The aluminum body, weighing 4,800 pounds, is 700 pounds lighter than a comparable F-150 from a year ago. So, in the F-150 review model I drove, the lesser weight allowed Ford to equip it with a 2.7-liter V-6

EcoBoost engine; that is the smallest-displacement V-6 engine in any half-ton pickup in the country. And don’t assume the small size equates to low power – the 2.7 is a twin-turbo producing 325 horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque, with towing capability of 7,600 pounds.

Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, it performed with plenty of power, maintaining highway speeds on the climbs to Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass and maneuvered some sharp twists on narrower roads once we left I-70 at Glenwood Springs. Its road man-

ners are excellent; its suspension of double-wishbone front and leaf springs rear soaked up the road imperfections, including the roughness on the eastbound descent of Vail Pass. Redstone is on Colo. 133, 15 miles south of Carbondale. For the overall trip of 488 miles, the F-150 averaged 22.9 miles per gallon. The 4X4’s EPA estimate is 18/23; the two-wheel-drive version of the F-150 is rated at 26 mpg on the highway, topped only by a diesel. For those pickup buyers who still like the feel and sound of V-8 power, the F-150 offers the 5.0-liter, as well as two other V-6s, the base 3.5 and a turboed 3.5 EcoBoost engine. Our stay at the Redstone Inn lent opportunity to meet Bruce and Libby Yaple of Lakewood; Bruce is owner of Yaple Company Real Estate in Lakewood. He was reared in Michigan, so, of course, he has an

said Darcy. “Guests can take the food back to the gaming machines, or slip away up here to sit and eat. Another great option for guests is that we are already doing a brisk ‘To-go’ business out of the Fresh Mexican Grille. Kids love our food and so guests can pick up dinner here on their way out to go home.” Hours of operation are generous. The Fresh Mexican Grille is open Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. For those wishing to order takeout, call Canyon Casino at 303-7771111 and ask for the Fresh Mexican Grille, or call the Fresh Mexican Grille directly at 303-582-2740.

interest in cars. Parked out front of their room at the Inn was a Lexus RX350. Power lumbar front seats added comfort over the four-hour drive each day. Rear-seat access isn’t particularly handy with the SuperCab, as the doors are rear-hinged and can be opened only when a front door is open. An easy-drop tailgate can be lowered by doubleclicking a button on the Ford’s key fob. Among options on the F-150, which brought sticker price to $47,060, were remote start, 3.65-ratio rear axle, voice-activated navigation, 36-gallon fuel tank, integrated trailer-brake control, leather bucket seats and blind-spot detection. The Ford F-150 is the runaway best seller among all cars and trucks in the U.S. For the past year, Ford has sold more V-6-powered F-150s than those with V-8s.

Memorial Day

A Memorial Day Remembrance of Navy SEAL Danny Dietz By Linda Wommack

Memorial Day is a day to reflect and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. For the Dietz family of Littleton, that day came for them on another patriotic holiday – the Fourth of July. This day of national celebration, a day of unity and a day of national patriotism for all. However, for this Littleton family, the Fourth of July 2005 brought immeasurable sadness. For it was on this day that Dan and Cindy Dietz were notified of the death of their son, Daniel “Danny” Dietz. Danny Dietz grew up in Littleton. He attended the same grade school and middle school that I did. Three months after his graduation from Littleton’s Heritage High School, Danny Dietz began his lifelong dream to became a Navy SEAL. At age 24, Danny Dietz was on his second deployment to Afghanistan when he and three other comrades were attacked by the

enemy on June 28, 2005. Two of the three would die that day – one was Danny Dietz. It was therefore quite fitting that on July 4, 2007, hundreds gathered at a small community park in Littleton, just a few short blocks away from the elementary school Danny Dietz attended. The day was all about community, celebration and respect. Family, friends, community members, and local and state representatives attended the celebration and unveiling of the patriotic statue of Danny Dietz, placed in the southwest corner of Littleton’s Berry Park. I was present when the ceremony began promptly at 11 a.m. Members of the U.S. Navy headed the flag procession toward the stage, an amazing site of protocol and respect. Littleton Mayor Jim Taylor thanked the thousands of people in attendance and explained the flyover was delayed near Telluride. Distinguished speakers, including Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter, Rear Adm. Joseph D. Kernan, U.S. Congressman Tom Tancredo and Medal of Honor Recipient Mike Thornton, all took to the podium to recount the courage, bravery and heroism of Navy SEAL Danny

P. Dietz. The common thread throughout was one of honor and respect not just for a fallen hero, but also for a hero that belongs to an entire community. “Within every community is the common man with the uncommon desire to lead,” one speaker said. In his speech, Tancredo praised the character of Danny Dietz: “He performed the highest level of service for our fellow man.” He went on to praise the community, “This statue has kindled hope in this community.” In the speech given by Rear Adm. Joseph D. Kernan, he said, “Every day should be the Fourth of July. Every day should be Memorial Day. It’s time to stand up for this country, as Danny Dietz did.” There was a brief pause. Someone with a loud baritone voice yelled “Hoorah!” The crowd cheered, then clapped and rose to their feet. That action alone spoke to the sentiment of all in attendance. Shortly after that, as if planned, but it wasn’t, the mayor directed the audience to the southwest as the flyover was approaching. Again the crowd was on their feet

with cheers and more hand clapping. Tiffany Bitz, Danny’s sister, was the last to speak. She spoke fondly of her brother, and what this day and this statue meant to her family, and a bit about what Danny would have thought of it, “too much fuss.” Recalling his youth, his life and his dreams, in an obvious emotional voice, she graciously acknowledged the presence of Danny’s widow, Patsy, who flew in for the ceremony, as well as the wives of two soldiers who died with Danny, who were also in attendance from out of state. She also acknowledged the first recipient of the “Danny Dietz Scholarship,” sponsored in part by Heritage High School, where Danny graduated in 1999. Danny’s sister ended her remarks with personal remembrances of community. She talked of walking to school through Berry Park, be it to Centennial

Academy or Goddard. “Walking through the park, I wonder ‘what is a hero?’ Today, walking through this park, I see a hero...my hero, my brother,” she said. The family and dignitaries were then led to the statue and its unveiling. It was quiet, it was solemn. As the cover fell, camera’s flashed. Not a word was said. The group gathered for media photos. Hugs were exchanged, handshakes abounded. The flag softly waved above in a gentle breeze. Posthumously, Danny Dietz was awarded the Navy Cross, the nation’s second highest military honor. As I walk in Berry Park or when I drive by, I always think of the sacrifice Daniel “Danny” Dietz made for his country. I am proud that I grew up in the same neighborhood and community that he did. May God Bless America.

Preserving Colorado A story of successes and losses Have you hugged your favorite landmark lately? This is your reminder that May is Colorado Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month, and a great time to enjoy your local heritage experience in your hometown. This month – and anytime of the year - tours, visits and events help you celebrate the architecture and sites that convey stories of the past and may even contain your treasured personal memories. The historic buildings, towns and cities that help make Colorado so livable and so lovable are many. As we enjoy yet another breathtaking boom in the state’s traditionally up-anddown economic cycle, let’s remember and applaud some of the efforts and organizations that have maintained the character and quality that appeal to long-time residents, newcomers and visitors. Saving our architectural heritage did not come easily. Battles had to be fought steadfastly and won. Historic Denver, Inc. formed in 1970 to save the famous Molly Brown House at 1340 Pennsylvania Ave. in Capitol Hill, which HDI acquired, restored and has operated as an enchanting museum for decades now. The organization also fought to save landmarks like the May D&F Tower and preserve the Ninth Street Park on the Auraria college campus while urban renewal was steam-rolling through downtown Denver demolishing entire blocks of aging historic buildings. HDI sponsors programs, leads tours and has published 22 walking tour guides, as well as encouraged designation of numerous historic districts in Denver.

Historic Boulder organized in 1972 to stop demolition of the Union Pacific Railroad Station, Central School and Highland School. The organization has been the steward of several historic properties in the city and the county − including the Cardinal Mill ore-processing facility − oftentimes finding new owners and sympathetic new uses for threatened landmark buildings. Colorado Preservation, Inc. joined in the preservation movement in 1984 with a broad reach and statewide outlook. Possibly their best known achievement is the Colorado’s Endangered Places list, which has contributed to conservation of dozens of properties and sites facing extinction. “Be sure to take a look around at the authentic historic buildings, the special places that define our lives,” said CPI’s Executive Director Roxanne Eflin. This is the 50th anniversary of Larimer Square, undertaken by Dana Crawford who spearheaded restoring the block of rundown architectural gems into the charming and inviting place it is today. “One woman, one block, one vision, with a bunch of collaborators,” said Eflin, as she busily prepared for CPI’s annual Dana Crawford Award event in early May. “Dana helped turn around a downtown and major urban landscape.” The experimental downtown revitalization became a national model, Eflin pointed out, and inspired similar projects in several U.S. cities. Crawford undertook many preservation projects. Her efforts returned

the Oxford Hotel from a shabby fading flophouse back to a charming boutique lodging. The visionary preservationist installed the first dwelling in Denver’s Platte River Valley by converting the abandoned, graffiticovered Flour Mill into residential lofts. Crawford was also involved in redesign and revitalization of historic downtowns in Arvada and in Brighton. Her most recent triumph was the rebirth of Union Station last year. Annually, CPI bestows preservation honor awards to leading Colorado preservationists. Honorees have included former Denver Mayor Federico Peña for his efforts in saving Denver’s Mayan Theater from demolition, brewpub pioneer (and Denver mayor) John Hickenlooper for restoring a neglected Colorado Springs building as the Phantom Canyon brewery and archivist/ historian Cara Fisher who blessed Cañon City with many preservation projects including and created a state-of-the-art local history research center. Another champion of historic preservation has been professor Thomas J. Noel, who has educated 100s of historic preservationists at the University of Denver – Colorado and authored dozens of books on Colorado’s historic places. “Dr. Colorado” has brought history alive with his fun and informative walking tours, seducing folks into falling in love with Colorado’s exciting story and precious architecture. Colorado’s special places – so many come to mind. Towns like Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Lake City, Victor, Manitou Springs, Golden, Pueblo, Glenwood Springs and Fort Collins achieved their attractive appeal that showcases their heritage through careful civic planning, sympathetic property ownership, savvy merchants and businesspeople, as well as efforts of troops of volunteers (not to mention plenty of funding). The State Historical Fund, created by legalized gaming in 1991 has been a strong steward too. The SHF established a financial resource for preservation projects, yielded by tax revenue from casinos in Colorado’s three gaming towns. To this date, nearly $260 million in grants have funded more than 4,000 projects statewide ranging from rural granges and hand-

some historic schools to the gleaming dome of the Colorado State Capitol. So, most of us have at least one beloved “old” place that we’re thankful still remains. Maybe it’s the redbrick schoolhouse with honey-colored oak floors, high sunny windows and high-hanging lights. Or maybe it’s the downtown Main Street where a kid could shop at Ben Franklin’s, enjoy the Sunday matinee at the decorative movie theater or sit on the curb to watch the parade. Maybe you cherish the narrow Victorian house that grandma lived in with its upstairs bedrooms under steep gables and friendly front porch just right for sipping cool lemonade. There’s that 1920s mountain cabin where your family retreated to for a week amongst the pines or the rustic summer camp with its log-and-stone buildings where you went to as a youngster. So, do take a minute to notice and appreciate the places that still speak of Colorado’s history story. Look for the places and events in your community and elsewhere around the state that honor the landmarks of yesteryear. And feel free to hug your favorite landmark! Water towers, grain elevators, barns and other agricultural structures tell the struggling story of high-altitude farming and stock raising.

Bulletproof coffee is made with “upgraded” coffee beans, whatever those are. Add butter, but not just any butter. Use only unsalted butter from grass-fed cows. And, on day eight, they probably down an entire meatloaf and a quart of rocky road. Of the current crop of dumb diets, the Breatharian Diet takes the cake. Or it would if cake were allowed on the Breatharian Diet, which it is not. Neither is anything else. I’m not making this up. There are people who believe they can live on air and sunshine alone, and they probably can, but not for very long. For them, diet starts with die—and ends that way too. I do envy their will power—and their grocery bill, but I would never accept a dinner invitation from them.
