The pit bosses have become very professional in following the action, welcoming players, checking player’s cards for points and action time, and dealers keeping straight faces when players do weird things, like hitting sixes. The new carpet in the Reserve Casino Hotel just feels luxurious when stepping off the elevator; the red plush carpet is very inviting to the completely remodeled facility in Central City. Humor thing from iTunes to our bank account, we will continue to need PINS and passwords. So as a public service, I’m offering a few helpful tips for coming up with secret codes. You can thank me by sending me your PIN. 1. The experts recommend you create an acronym, for example, HSHttYO (Hackers should have their toenails yanked out) or HWhoIT (Here’s wishing hives on identity thieves). 2. Try mixing CaPital and LOwerCase LeTTers. Just make sure you remember which letters you made cApITAL and which ones you made loWERcASE. 3. Use phonetic replacements like LUV2LAF or hate2getrippedoff. 4. Deliberately misspelling a word in your password can make it harder to crack. It also makes it harder to remember, but that’s beside the point. Try something like EggselentPASSWEIRD or PLEESdon’tSTEELfromME. 5. guess. That means your birthday isn’t a good choice, even though presumably you can remember it on most days. Try your first car’s nickname or your height and weight combined. No, maybe not your weight. That could change. 6. Never write your PINs and passwords down! The experts say you should rely on your memory, such as it is. Apparently the experts have fewer passwords and better memories than I do. 7. Tempting as it is, don’t use the same password for everything. Life would be grand if we could use a password like “allpeople-R-honest” and “Itrustevery-1” for all of our accounts, but that isn’t recommended, either as a password or as a way of life. 8. Finally, never give your password or PIN to anyone else--except me! I’m JOKING! Don’t give it to me either! I don’t want any more. Another foolproof roulette system bites the dust
T
wice last week, I was buttonholed by bettors bragging about foolproof roulette systems they’d devised. Once in person. Once via email on the Internet. By coincidence, both players had struck upon essentially the same ostensible secret of success. Details differed, but here’s the nub. 1) Wait for five successive hits anywhere in the lefthand column of the layout or on 0 or 00. 2) Bet $500 each on the middle and right-hand columns because they’re “due.” 3) If the bet wins, quit with $500 profit. 4) If the bet loses -- another hit in the left-hand column or 0 or 00 -- the other two columns are “past due” so bet on them again. Both players told me they figured the systems put the odds in their favor. Both claimed they’d
been playing and were ahead. Both said the casinos were giving them freebies galore because the dumb dealers and pit bosses didn’t realize what was happening. And, both asked my opinion. First, “waiting” for some sequence of events to indicate that a result is “due” is irrelevant. Roulette is a game of independent trials. On each spin of the wheel, the ball can land in any of 38 grooves with equal probability. Previous results don’t matter. Second, betting $500 each on two columns has 63.16 percent chance of winning and 36.84 percent chance of losing; that’s odds of 1.71-to-1 for the player. Don’t mistake this for a positive expectation, though. The problem is that a loss is a $1,000 setback while a win is worth $500; that’s
2-to-1 against the player. Effects of the disparity between 1.71-to-1 “for” and 2-to-1 “against” become clear considering the results of multiple bets. In two spins, this system gives players 39.89 percent chance of winning twice and earning $1,000, 46.53 percent chance of winning once and losing once for a net loss of $500, and 13.58 percent chance of losing twice at a total cost of $2,000. There’s not only more chance of being behind than ahead, but the maximum possible profit is still just half the greatest conceivable loss. Additional play makes the situation increasingly bleak. Consider five bets. Probability of profit is 10.05 percent for $2,500 and 29.31 percent for $1,000; likelihood of loss is 34.20 percent for $500, 19.94 percent for $2,000, 5.81 percent for $3,500, and 0.69 percent for $5,000. After 100 bets, the chance is only 23.27 per-
cent of being ahead at all, compared with 76.73 percent of being behind. And after 1,000 bets, the chance of earning any profit is a mere 1.07 percent, contrasted with 98.93 percent of suffering a loss. Statistically, these last figures imply that for every hundred players betting this system a thousand times, one would be sure it was foolproof and the other 99 would be licking their wounds. Last, there’s the question why the casino bosses hand out meals, rooms, transportation, and tasteless merchandise to solid citizens using this system. It’s because the 1.71-to-1 and 2-to-1 odds give the house a high 5.263 percent edge. So, when a player puts $1,000 total on two columns -- win or lose -the casino chalks up a theoretical gross profit of $52.63. Averaged over many players, the laws of probability say this figure should accurately predict actual return -as, indeed, it does.
Casinos typically allocate 20 percent of the theoretical gross take on games to “incentives.” Bet the two columns for $500 each 10 times during a day. The casino calculates a $526.30 hold on the $10,000 action. At 20 percent, this gets you about $100 in “comps,” which actually cost the joint roughly $50 in “hard money,” leaving a fat $475 on the earnings ledger. Oh yes. When players explain their systems and ask what I think, what should I say? If it’s not what they want to hear, they’ll argue with me. If I prevaricate or act impressed but don’t really respond, I’ll feel dishonest with myself. So, when feasible, I try to follow the philosophy of the immortal Sumner A Ingmark: If asked an opinion, please exercise tact, You’ll ruin a friendship by stating a fact.
What about continuous shuffle machine games?
I
got this question from someone who reads my columns: “Hi do you have a system that can beat the continuous shuffle machines and if so which book?” My first inclination was to answer with a cryptic: “Play it the same way you would play baseball with a blindfold on.” To each his or her own. You can play whatever games you want to play. We all have our preferences. Me, I want a maximum amount of predictability. So I pick the games where I get this factor, for a maximum ability to win big. The thing about blackjack that makes it the most winnable game in the house is its predictability. That’s why some casinos in recent years have tried introducing continuous shuffle machines. They destroy much of the game’s predictability. Yes, there’s still a certain amount of intra-round predictability. For example, in a 6-deck game, there could never be more than 24 Aces dealt per round.
PAGE 6
created for dealer shuffled games. Why would I sacrifice an edge to the house? But continuous shuffle machine tables are even worse, needless to say, because you lose the round-to-round (inter-round) By Richard Harvey predictability. If you’re someone who plays the game not caring whether you But that’s small solace. In a normal 6-deck game, those Aces win or lose, then fine. But if you’re could be expected to be fairly well like me, looking to make some money and the more the better spread out amongst the decks. Not so with continuous shuffle then you become more discrimigames. Frankly, I’m not even sure the cards through a shuffle, which is so easy to do with the methods I the question was from a player.
Sometimes casinos want to see what advice I’m putting out. Because most players - without my input - seem to understand that continuous shuffle machines put them at a great disadvantage and they don’t like them. That’s why you don’t see a lot of those games. Because players don’t want to play them and casinos will get the message if they see those tables are empty. For example, I remember when various digital blackjack games were introduced by some casinos in the late 1990s. They were like video games. You sat down at the table and every player had a screen where a virtual dealer “dealt” them the cards. Only problem was, players quickly surmised that these were no better than the slots machines and blackjack players notoriously avoid those. Few sat down at the digital tables and even fewer came back to play them again. It was pretty clear there was no predictability - those games having been simulated by a computer’s random number generator - and they

were programmed to beat the players in the long run. I did not have to tell players not to play those games. Players are not stupid. Given all that, I probably don’t have to tell you that continuous shuffle machine games are for less discriminating players and I have to believe they’re among the least popular of the casino blackjack offerings. Hopefully those games will go the way of Digital 21. You won’t find me at those tables. But hey, to each his or her own. The Colorado Central Rail Road route today
B
efore we move on to the Union Pacific Rail Road, let’s take a look at the towns serviced by the Colorado Central Rail Road in the 1800s as they are today.... The silver boom town of Georgetown sits off I-70 at the northern end of Guanella Pass, a beautiful weekend drive from Denver. At the southern end of the pass is the small town of Grant off Highway 285 South. Guanella is an especially fine aspen viewing route. The trip can start early in Grant ending up in Georgetown to ride the Georgetown Loop or tour the Hotel de Paris while peeking into the charming shops. Or one can opt for the reverse trip. Either way it is a loop from Denver. Idaho Springs is between Denver and Georgetown and is a popular stop for hungry skiers returning from the slopes. Long ago the Indians used the springs there for medicinal purposes. One can still enjoy the hot waters along with various treatments at Indian Hot Springs Resort. Another Idaho Springs adventure is taking the tour of the Argo Mine, Mill and Museum that teaches the history of gold mining days in the area. There was a tunnel, unusable now, from Idaho to Central City connecting some of the most lucrative mines. From Idaho there are two routes to Central City and Black Hawk. The Central City Parkway, PAGE 12

recently built, goes north from South Clear Creek just east of Idaho over the hills to Central City. The other, father east on I-70, turns north to Hwy. 6 and, at the Forks of the Creek, heads west up North Clear Creek along the old Colorado Central RR route. Oh dear! This leaves out the third road from Central to Idaho Springs accurately referred to as the “Oh, my God! road.” The steep and rough descent shook up U.S. Grant in 1868. It might just shake you up today. The cities of Central, known as “The Richest Square Mile on Earth,” and Black Hawk were, during the gold rush days, the center of the universe. There has
always been some level of competition between them, but together they are now listed as the Central City/Black Hawk National Historic District. Central City has long been known for its presentations of drama and music. In 1861, while the gold rush was just taking off, Jack Langrishe started using mountain talent to create stage performances for the inhabitants of Central City. In he 1930s, Anne Evans and Ida Kruse McFarlane endeared themselves to the city by restoring the Opera House and bringing top dramatic talent to its stage followed later by grand opera. The 1940s were a challenge for them because the loss of the railroad and bad roads made it hard for the fine people of Denver to get

to Central. They persevered. Spencer Penrose of Colorado Springs later picked up the cause, and the tradition of the opera season continues to this day. Among enjoyments in Central City is Lou Bunch Day, which honors the last madam in the city and the bed races are followed by the Madams and Miners Ball. It is a reminder of the bawdy gold mining days, but mostly it honors the madams and other ladies of the oldest profession who were important to the community and pioneers of their time. After a long and tarnished history, gambling had become illegal in Colorado. It was resurrected in 1991 when the people of Colorado voted to allow casino gambling in three old gold mining districts: Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. Though controversial at first, gambling has been very beneficial to the state’s coffers. Most of the big casinos are in Black Hawk. Some of the old flavor of the town still exists in the Victorian homes scattered up the
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 21 Years
hill behind them. Despite being a casino town, Central City’s regulations have assured that it remains the best preserved gold mining town in the country. Breweries in the Cripple Creek area were developing about the same time, 1873, that the Coors Brewery was founded in Golden, the point at which the narrow gauge Central Rail Road began. Old narrow gauge railroad maps of Colorado show tracks all over the state. The CCRR was only a tiny part of that but certainly one of the richest parts of the whole. What now? For years there has been talk of building a new set of rails ... light rail FastTracks from Denver International Airport to the ski towns. The CCRR once carried the product of the mines to the smelters in the city, getting the product to where it needed to go. Now there is a need to get people quickly and efficiently to where they want to go and to where their presence will benefit the state’s economy: the ski towns, historical spots, businesses, residential communities, the gambling towns, etc. Challenges? Most definitely yes, but parts of this are already being worked on or in place. There is a long-term plan to get tracks from Union Station to the airport. The West branch of FasTracks will opened in April, starting at Union Station with it’s terminus in Golden. Who knows, we could see rail from Golden to Black Hawk, Central City, Idaho Springs, and Georgetown once again. May 21 - June 3, 2013
Captain Jack
S
and her many odysseys
he was a tough lady, eccentric and legendary as one of Colorado’s most colorful pioneers. Ellen Elliott was born on Nov. 4, 1842, in New Lentern, Nottingham, England. By the time she made her way to Colorado in 1880, the woman had suffered tragedy and loss. In 1860, Elliott boarded the “James Foster” ship bound for America. While aboard, she met Charles E. Jack. The two were soon married after they settled in New York. When the country erupted in Civil War, Charles Jack served the Union, eventually rising to the rank of captain. During the war, Ellen gave birth to their first child, a girl. Not long after the war ended, the couple welcomed their second child, a boy. Tragedy struck the Jack family when both children later died of scarlet fever. The couple eventually had two more daughters. Sadly, one of the daughters died, again due to scarlet fever. Then not long after the death of their third child, Charles died in 1872, of an enlarged heart. Devastated by so much tragedy and loss, Ellen Jack eventually placed her surviving daughter in the care of her sister-in-law and headed to the West. Her first stop was Denver where she learned of
the gold discoveries in the Gunnison area on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains. In Gunnison, she opened a boarding house and with the income she was able to buy into a partnership in the Black Queen Mine, located between Crested Butte and Aspen. It was at this time that history records her name as “Captain Jack,” which she had taken from her deceased husband. This was also the time when her colorful Colorado legend took on a whole new persona. According to her autobiography, Fate of a Fairy or Twentyseven Years in the Far West, Captain Jack was well accomplished with firearms, including pistols, shotguns and rifles. She wrote she was involved in several gunfights, including a few with local Indians. Traveling alone through the heavy snows in the mountains, she always carried a pistol and pick-ax to get her through the snow-packed passes. She later said, “I do not fear man or devil; it is not in my blood, and if they can shoot any straighter or quicker than I, let them try it, for a .44 equalizes frail women and brute men, and all women ought to be able to protect themselves

against such ruffians.” Among the many events related in her book is a somewhat fanciful tale involving gypsies. Captain Jack relates that at the age of 7, she attended the Goose Fair in her hometown of Nottingham, where she met a gypsy queen who supposedly said to her mother, “The child will meet with great sorrows and be a widow early in life.” Whether the event is true or not, the prediction certainly proved to be correct. In 1900, Captain Jack was living in Cripple Creek where she ran a boarding house for three years at the corner of Bennett Avenue and 4th Street. Nothing else is known of her time in Cripple Creek and her autobiography makes only one reference to her time there. In 1903 she had relocated to Colorado Springs where she operated a few rental cabins for tourists on the High Drive above Bear Creek Canyon. In a time when automobile tourism became a rage, Captain Jack set out to corner the new market. She set up an eclectic tourist trap complete with a curio shop featuring erotic pets including snakes and macaws. She regaled her customers with fanciful stories of magical gypsies and wild stories of her life. Captain Jack became something of an oddity in the area of Colorado Springs. Rumors and whispers re-

She had a reputation in the town as well. Gaines was one of the first to capitalize on the tourist trade. She ran a hotel in town and was one of the many hoards of carriage drivers that clamored at the train depot to take the visitors, businessmen and tourists to their establishments. Gaines, who could outsmart, out-swear and out-fight any competitor, eventually out-smarted Captain Jack. As Gaines launched a heavy marketing campaign, Captain Jack escalated her wild tales of her adventurous life. As time went on the Indian stories got wilder and the mountain tales included fights with beastly animals. She had photos taken of herself outlandish mountain garb, complete with pistols and shotguns, that she sold in her curio shop. The photo captions, in her own handwriting read, “Mrs. Captain Jack Lost in the Mountains” and “Mrs. Captain Jack Looking for Mountain Lion.” Today copies of these photographs can be found on the Internet and often show up on
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 21 Years
ebay as the “original” photo card. Meanwhile, Gaines’ tourist business was cutting into Captain Jack’s, forcing her to take out loans she was unable to pay back. Financial difficulties led to three separate lawsuits in 1906. Nearly broke, she became a recluse, living alone with her cats, parrots and burros. However, the wild tales continued. In an interview published in the Feb. 5, 1905, issue of the Gazette Telegraph, she claimed she had located a cave to rival the nearby Cave of the Winds, another tourist attraction. However, she said she was keeping the location secret until she could develop it as tourist destination. In June 1920, heavy rains turned into a horrific flood, washing out the road to Captain Jack’s tourist cabins on High Drive. With her business virtually wiped out, and in ill health, 78-year- Captain Jack died the following year, on June 16, 1921. She was buried in the city’s Evergreen Cemetery, where her tombstone ironically faces the High Drive. In another irony, “Ma” Gaines bought Captain Jack’s tourist property a few years later and operated it quite successfully.

Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls or medium cookie scoop 1 1/2 inches apart on baking sheets sprayed with no stick cooking spray or lined with parchment paper. Bake about 10 minutes or just until cookies are set and slightly cracked on top. Cool on baking sheets 1 minute. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.
