Mother’s Day Colorado’s mothers give early support to national Mother’s Day
S
By Rosemary Fetter
ince Colorado women were the second in the nation to win the vote, they were naturally among the earliest supporters of a national Mother’s Day. In 1911, just four years after the original observance in 1907, Denverites held one of the first celebrations in the country, with a day filled with songs and religious services. Here are just a few “mothers” who played an important role in Colorado history and the making of the West.
Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini
The first American to be canonized a saint by the Roman Catholic Church, Mary Francesca Cabrini came from a farming family in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Italy. The youngest of 13 children born to a 52 year-old mother, she was in frail health all her life. After spending her early years caring for her elderly parents, she took religious vows in 1877. Three years later, along with six other nuns, she founded the order of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. During its first five years, her small group of nuns established seven homes for orphans, a school and a nursery.
Impressed by the gentle, yet determined woman, Pope Leo XIII sent Mother Cabrini to New York City in 1889, where she built the first of 67 orphanages around the country. She came to Denver in 1902 and 1906 to establish Mount Carmel School, the Queen of Heaven Orphanage and the Cabrini Shrine in Mount Vernon along I-70. Mother Cabrini has been called the patron saint of immigrants because of her great compassion for the courageous people who leave their native land in the hope of a better life. After touring Colorado mining towns, she wrote with great feeling of Italians who “slaved away at this labor, uninterruptedly year after year, until the weakness of old age crept over them or until someday a cave-in, explosion or accident of some kind cuts their life short, leaving their wives widowed and their children fatherless. They did not even need a grave, having been buried in the tomb in which they spent their whole lives.” Mother Cabrini, whose feast day is Dec. 22, was canonized in 1946.
Mother Cawker
As prospectors rushed to the fledgling Cherry Creek settlement that be-
came Denver, the Cherokee Trail experienced a considerable increase in traffic, with covered wagons, cattle and freight wagon trains pouring into town daily. With a stage stop in mind, pioneers Samuel and Elizabeth Brantner built a two-story log house outside the settlement in late summer 1859, which they called Four Mile House. Within a year, a 47-year-old widow named Mary Cawker took over the property. With the help of her teenage children Samuel, 19, and Elizabeth, 17, she developed the site into a stage stop. Cawker was a spirited woman who knew how to deal with the rough and tumble clientele who frequented Four Mile House. As her business flourished, she opened a tavern downstairs. She sometimes used the second floor for dances or to bed overnight guests. Her holdings eventually included most of the Cherry Creek Valley between Colorado Boulevard and Holly Street. Unfortunately, the Cherry Creek Flood of 1864 inundated most of her land and put her out of business. Mary moved on to other real estate pursuits, at one time operating a theatrical boarding house in Denver. She was clever enough to deed most of her considerable estate to her family before she died in Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1906.
Mother Goetze
In 1892, Ida Goetze, a young German widow with two sons, purchased for back taxes one of the first hand-cut stone hotels west of St Louis, which has since become Golden’s historic Astor House and Museum. Mother Goetze renamed the hotel Boston House and made several improvements to the property, including a ìmodernî 1890s kitchen and the town’s first bathtub, charging 25 cents for a hot bath. The enterprising businesswoman was among the first to have water and gas piped in, and reputedly boasted one of the first radios in the community. A master gardener, she planted shade trees and built a summerhouse with a lattice of climbing roses and beautiful gardens. Also known for her wonderful cooking, she made an arrangement with the Colorado School of Mines to serve students in the hotel ñ cafeteria style. Mines students eventually comprised the majority of boarders, a tradition that continued until the family sold the property in the late 1950s. By 1972, Astor House was slated for demolition, to be recycled as the ubiquitous parking lot. The community came to the rescue and saved the old hotel, which was designated an historic landmark and reborn as a museum in 1973.
Mother Jones
Labor organizer Mary Harris Jones, known as “The Miner’s Angel,” was an immigrant born in 1837 in Cork City, Ireland. Her parents moved to Michigan and she subsequently studied to become a teacher in Toronto. In 1862, she moved to Memphis, Tenn., to marry George Jones, a member of the Iron Workers’ Union. In 1867, her husband and their four children (all younger than age 5) died during a yellow fever epidemic. She began a new life in Chicago, where she started her own business as a dressmaker, but she lost everything in the Great Fire of 1871. She subsequently joined the Knights of Labor and became an influential organizer, inciting the wives and children of striking workers to demonstrate in their support. Once called “the most dangerous woman in America,” she was a passionate and fiery speaker, arrested several times. She came to southern Colorado to organize the coal miners, was arrested and served time in prison being thrown out of the state just before the Ludlow Massacre. After Ludlow, she met with John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and convinced him to visit the Colorado mines and introduce long-sought reforms. She died in November 1930.

The Toll Gate Barn is a welcome, though brief, respite on your way to your destination in San Francisco. Following a meal of venison steak, bread and tea, you return to your coach along with eight other passengers, the conductor and the driver. Pulled by two teams of mules, with bone-jarring speed, the coach travels toward the continental divide. You’ve been on the road for over a week. Your fellow passengers ride three abreast, squeezed into back and middle rows, both facing forward, and into a forward row facing rearward. The unfortunate fellows in the forward and middle rows must ride with their knees dovetailed and all passengers travel

It is early summer so you’ve not had to endure intense heat and fortunately you’ve avoided any Indian attacks, robberies or accidents with the coach. After a journey of nearly 1,000 miles the majestic Rocky Mountains loomed in the distance. The road became badly rutted and often times, due to sandy or dangerously uneven ground, you had to get out of the coach and walk. You finally reached a stage stop in Denver where several passengers said their goodbyes and several new passengers boarded. The mountains were closer and the view was breathtaking. From Denver, the stage traveled on to a small village at the mouth of a canyon called Golden Gate. The driver changed horses but there were no facilities for the passengers so you remained on board. Then the coach climbed an eight-mile pull to the top of what the driver called Guy Hill which was
followed by a decent into steep and tortuous Guy Gulch. Heavy wagons were eased down the hill by means of a snubbing post and tackle. However, the stage drivers largely ignored that method in favor of an arrangement of rough-locking the hind wheels of the coaches. From Guy Gulch you climbed another stiff grade up to the Junction Ranch, then southward up to the Smith Hill Divide. Here commenced another sharp decent of two miles from the divide into Clear Creek Canyon where the coach followed two miles of easy road up the canyon to Black Hawk, through Central City, finally reaching the Stage Stop in Rollinsville. You are barely half-way to your destination in San Francisco. You’re tired, dirty and every bone in your body aches. You focus on a poster on the door of the coach and a slight smile tweaks at the corners of your mouth as you read: You will be trav-

eling through Indian country and the safety of your person cannot be vouchsafed by anyone but God. And to think this tortuous journey only cost you $200 plus meals ($3,000 today). One stagecoach passenger said, “To many people, doubtless, who think more of their ease than they do of robust physical health, a stage ride of a 1,000 or 2,000 miles may seem a formidable undertaking. But for those who have a liking for adventure and a desire to see something of the world, the long ride of two or three weeks, practically in the open air possesses a wonderful charm — especially in remembrance . . .”

My big money management mistake Ask any professional or successful poker player and they will tell you that strong money management is the key to being a consistent winning poker player over the long haul. This means keeping track of your stack while at the table at all times - are you ahead or behind and how far? It means knowing how is your stack stands up vs. the rest of the table - can you maximize your best hands by having enough chips to be able to put your opponent all in? This means remembering the reason you are playing - which is to make money. The bottom line is that being a good money manager means leaving while ahead of the game rather than leaving when behind. Through the first three-plus months of 2016, this has been one of my strengths. My last six sessions this year have been winners ranging from a $70 win to a $1,500 win and I firmly believe this is because

BY LARRY JOHNSON
I have been picking to leave at the right time. But, this streak was broken the other night when one simple money management mistake cost my bankroll over $900. My night began at a $2 $5/$100 table and I bought in for $400. I played at this table for just under an hour and lost $100. I played very few hands but just couldn’t catch a card or stay ahead. The key hand was a set of 7’s I had that were beat by a straight - not a bad play by either party, just a bit unlucky. I then moved over to a new $30 - $60 hold em poker game and
bought in for another $500, entered the game with $800 on the table. The line-up was a good mix of recreational players and regulars who sat in the game almost nightly. Over the next hour, I steadily lost and was down to just over $200 in front of me. There wasn’t any real spectacular hands or bad beats, just pairs that didn’t hold up, straights or flushes that didn’t come in, and lost blinds. Then, the tide turned a bit. I won a hand when my pocket K’s held up; then made a spade flush with four players calling; and finally won another pot with A-K when I caught two pair. When the dust cleared, I had $980 in chips in front of me and realized I was only $20 from being even and was very excited. (Here is the mistake.) Before I had a chance to think about it, I looked down to pocket Q’s just in front of the blinds and called - absolutely sure this would be the hand that would get me
positive for the session. The pot was raised and all of a sudden I had $60 in the middle of the table. The flop came 10 - 8 - 4, I called a $30 bet along with another raise, and the turn and river brought two 6’s with bets on each card. My Q’s lost to a pocket pair of K’s and I was down to under $600. And yes, it slowly occurred to me that I had actually only bought in for $900 ($400 in $2 - $5 and $500 in $30 - $60) rather than the $1,000 I figured above, so was up $80 rather than down $20 when I played the pocket Q’s. And yes, if I would have realized that, I would have not played the hand and would have racked up, cashed out, and ended the session with a small win. Instead, I did not have my total buy-in right and played a hand I shouldn’t have. Now, those same professional or successful players mentioned above may not agree, as
they would say play every hand as hard as possible, and if I was a professional player I may agree. But, I’m not a professional and cannot put in the hours they do to average everything out so have to know when to rack up and go. To finish the story, I ended up playing nearly another hour but in the end went all in with an A - Q, lost, and walked away with a humbling $900 loss. So — if I would have kept track of my buy-in, remembered exactly where I stood chip-wise, and keep my discipline, this session would have ended up an $80 winner rather than what I consider a $980 loss. The moral of the story: Pay Attention! One miscue can make the difference between winning and losing and it’s better to be the one who takes advantage of the mistakes rather than makes the mistakes. And remember - play your game!

Trail’s End
Denver’s own crime stopper Philip Van Cise
Philip Van Cise was born on October 25, 1884, in South Dakota, to Edwin and Adele Van Cise, where Edwin Van Cise was a practicing attorney. It was here, following the massacre at Wounded Knee, December 29, 1890, Edwin Van Cise served as one of the prosecuting attorneys during the trials. Ten years later, in 1900, the Van Cise family moved to Denver, where the elder Van Cise became a prominent Denver attorney and chairman of the Denver Public Utilities Commission. In Denver, Philip Van Cise attended East High School. Van Cise went on to the University of Colorado while working as a cub reporter for the Rocky Mountain News. In 1909, he receiving his law degree and joined his father’s law firm. From 1910 to 1914, he was captain of Company K, of the Colorado National Guard. In the winter of 1913, Van Cise’s unit was sent to the southern Colorado coal fields in an effort to relieve tensions during the miners strike. A few weeks after Van Cise’s Company K was sent back to Denver, National Guard troops under the command of Lieutenant Karl Linderfelt opened fire on the striking miners at the Ludlow tent colony. Twenty people were killed, including two women and 11 children who suffocated in an underground pit as the tents above them burned. After the horrific incident at Ludlow, Van Cise was sent to the area to conduct investigations. Van Cise was appointed to a review board in which statements were taken from eyewitnesses, as well as his fellow National Guard soldiers. In the end, court-martial proceedings were brought forth for two dozen members of the militia. All accused participants were acquitted, with the exception of L. J. Linderfelt. Linderfelt was found guilty of shooting and then beating the leader of the miners’ union, Louis Tikas, nearly to death. In fact, Tikas later died of his injuries, which included several bullet wounds, as well as a fractured skull. However, Linderfelt’s hearing ended not in a courtmartial, but in a severe reprimand

that was placed on his military record. Disgusted by the outcome of the proceedings, Van Cise became a vocal critic of the National Guard. He was not alone. Van Cise joined other officers of the National Guard in writing an internal report denouncing several of their colleagues who also served on the review board. One of those board members was Lieutenant Colonel Edward Boughton. A few months later, when Van Cise was to participate in yet another military hearing, the presiding officer was none other than Lieutenant Colonel Edward Boughton. During the proceedings, Boughton accused Van Cise of plotting with the United Mine Workers of America, intentionally discrediting the National Guard. An indignant Van Cise responded: “I have nothing to conceal about anything I did in the field. I had experience with you when at Ludlow, and I know how you deal and how crooked you are, and you are not going to get away with it here.” Boughton abruptly ended his questioning. Undaunted, Van Cise remained on the stand, recounting his efforts to bring the murders committed by members of the National Guard to the attention of Governor Ammons and the Adjutant General. Van Cise’s efforts were to no avail. In effect, the leaders of Colorado Lou Blonger
distinction, Van Cise received the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. It was during his military service overseas that Van Cise’s father died. Not long after the death of her husband, Adele Van Cise purchased an elegant stone mansion on the corner of 16th and Race Streets, as an investment. Due to the poor economy during the war, Adele Van Cise began converting her new home into an eight-unit apartment house. Following the end of the war, Philip Van Cise returned to Denver where he lived with his mother for a brief time. It was at Philip’s suggestion that his mother renamed the home the “Marne Apartments,” after the many castles he had seen along Philip Van Cise the Marne River. associates, were convicted and sent to prison. Next, Van Cise took on the Ku Klux Klan. With several members of the Klan holding city and state offices, it was a bold step for Van Cise. Governor Clarence J. Morley, elected in 1925, bowed to Klan pressure, allowing Grand Dragon Dr. John Locke to hold tight control of Morley’s politics and his government. Denver’s mayor, Benjamin F. Stapleton, was also a Klan supporter. Several bills were introduced in the senate to abolish and recreate state agencies based on Klan motives. Van Cise eventually prosecuted Locke for tax evasion and sent him to prison in 1926. With the conviction of Colorado’s leader of the Ku Klux Klan, Van Cise effectively caused the fall of the Klan influence in the state, almost as suddenly as it had emerged. The political dominoes soon fell. Governor Morley’s personal secretary was indicted for mail fraud, two of Locke’s advisors went to prison for embezzlement, and Morley was defeated in the following election. Shortly thereafter, Morley was convicted of mail fraud and served five years at Leavenworth, the only governor of Colorado to be sent to prison. In his autobiography, Van Cise wrote: “At the conclusion of the bunco case I was probably the most popular man in Colorado. Two years later, when I went out of office because of the fight against the Klan, I was probably the most unpopular man in the state.” Decades later the City and County of Denver finally paid tribute to Denver’s crime stopper of the 1920s. The Philip Van Cise Justice Center is located in the heart of downtown Denver. Cindy Van Cise O’Hanlon was quoted as saying: “My grandfather was a very humble person. He took on cases not for publicity, but because something was wrong. For him, there was a right and a wrong, and there wasn’t any in between. He was, in the best sense of the word, a righteous man. If you were doing something wrong, he was going to take you down, no matter who you were. He had an inability to become political, to compromise what he believed.”

ARIES (March 21 – April 19) Mercury turns retrograde in your sector of personal finances on Thursday, so be particularly mindful when purchasing anything online or anything expensive. Keep receipts and other important details just in case. Venus enters Taurus on Friday, making your money zone an area of interest. Although you might be tempted to splurge, it would be better to opt for small luxuries rather than one big blowout. Try to invest more of your cash rather than spend it. Lucky Numbers 4, 10, 19, 21, 28, 29
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22) Just as you’re hitting your stride regarding a career move, Mercury turns retrograde in your professional sector. This doesn’t mean you should drop everything and wait until it turns direct again. Do what you have to, but bear in mind that your original plans could change in the weeks ahead. You’ll easily navigate this phase if you can go with the flow. You’ll also be able to mount a charm offensive and impress superiors, so use this to your advantage. Lucky Numbers 1, 14, 17, 22, 28, 29.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20) Personal projects and plans could be delayed as the planet of talk and thought turns retrograde on Thursday. But you only need to worry about this if you’re about to commit to a major project or plan. The small stuff will take care of itself. If possible, hold off signing important documents until after May 22. If you can’t, go ahead, but know that changes to your original plans are likely. On the upside, Venus encourages you to indulge and have fun. Lucky Numbers 5, 8, 11, 18, 20, 29.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) As Mercury begins its backward dance on Thursday, you may particularly notice its influence if you’re traveling or on vacation. It would be helpful to have a checklist ready before you set off and make sure you’ve packed everything you need. Despite your preparations, be ready for a few unexpected detours along the way. As Venus sashays into Taurus on Friday, you’ll be likelier to encounter romance when you move outside your comfort zone. Lucky Numbers 10, 14, 16, 28, 33, 39.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 20) As your personal planet Mercury enters its retrograde phase in your spiritual sector, you can use this opportunity to connect with yourself more deeply. This phase can be particularly useful for keeping a dream diary. The more acquainted you become with the messages from your subconscious mind, the better you’ll be able to understand the guidance they offer. When Venus moves into this same sector, the chance to volunteer your time to help others could be very rewarding. Lucky Numbers 3, 13, 16, 18, 24, 28.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 22) You’ll need to take extra care when closing deals, discussing important issues, handling business affairs, or dealing with shared resources during this time. As Mercury enters its retrograde phase, you’ll be ideally placed to tackle debt issues and improve your financial standing as much as you can. This isn’t the best time to take out a loan or incur debt, particularly if it serves no real purpose. That said, investing in quality art could bring a good return in the future. Lucky Numbers 1, 7, 8, 12, 18, 22.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Although you may be eager to lose weight and get as toned and fit as possible, this may not easy in practice. The temptation to indulge could interfere with your plans. But you may be able to overcome such hurdles if you enlist the services of a personal trainer or coach. Still, the urge to overeat could be almost impossible to resist once Venus dances into Taurus later in the week. You might have to give in and enjoy yourself. Lucky Numbers 10, 19, 21, 25, 28, 29. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) Mercury enters its retrograde phase in your leisure sector, so you could be tempted to take up a hobby or pastime that you enjoyed as a child. Rather than bring on a feeling of nostalgia, it could have real relevance to the person you are today. You may find that it ignites your sense of joy and creativity. Venus glides into this same sector, so it’s time to indulge your senses. Whatever it takes to have fun, just do it! Lucky Numbers 4, 11, 13, 18, 25, 28. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) Friends and family you haven’t seen in a while may turn up on your doorstep as Mercury enters its retrograde phase in your home and family sector. However, as Venus dances in later in the week, you’ll very much enjoy the chance to entertain guests. At the same time, this is a good opportunity to kick back and nurture yourself. You’ve been exceptionally busy lately and your body and brain need this time to relax and recharge. Lucky Numbers 3, 9, 12, 18, 27, 33.
SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 21) Relationships seem to be a major focus for you at this time. However, you also need to take extra care when interacting with others as Mercury turns retrograde on Thursday. This can be an opportunity to connect with old friends and enjoy a reunion, but there’s also the potential for misunderstandings. Just be aware of this as you go about your daily business. With Venus also dancing into Taurus, your social life could be particularly exciting, with romance looking very promising. Lucky Numbers 2, 7, 8, 11, 18, 22.
PISCES (Feb 19 – March 20) If you’re inspired to study, write, teach, or network with like-minded others, you’re very much in tune with the present planetary picture. No matter what your interests, this is the time to go for it. However, it’s important not to have too many expectations as Mercury turns retrograde. If you find that an activity isn’t for you, drop it and try something else. Romance could play a big part in your life in the weeks ahead, so enjoy it! Lucky Numbers 2, 21, 22, 29, 31, 38.

CANCER (June 21 – July 22) A reunion may be in the cards this week or in the next three weeks. Mercury retrograde in your social sector suggests that old friends may be in touch or an ex or old flame may come back into your life. This can be an opportunity to talk over old times or seek healing regarding a difficult breakup. You might find that you get on much better this time. And with Venus entering Taurus on Friday, a past romance could be rekindled. Lucky Numbers 7, 9, 11, 15, 20, 28.

never did feel good about meeting men online. Joseph told me that his help might actually void my warranty. I asked him if putting my foot through the monitor might also void my warranty, because that was looking like my only other option. He suggested that before I did that, I call the computer manufacturer. I did, and after agreeing to pay a large sum of money, playing several games of Tri-Peaks, and bumping my head on my desk while looking for my computer’s serial number, I was told by a representative from the computer
manufacturer, that he too was unable to solve my problem. I was just about to chuck my career and live out my days playing solitaire. But then he told me he could give me what he called a “work-around.” And that was good enough for me. In fact, I was ecstatic! I would have asked him to marry me except my husband might not approve. So I asked him if he would just move in. And I meant it! I need an IT person in my house! As computers get fancier, the tools I have at my disposal are no longer sufficient. (The tools I have being a hammer and a screwdriver.) All’s well that ends. I’m making do with the “work-around.” I’m getting used to my new computer. And I’m thinking of taking up Microsoft Mahjong.

Oh well. (Though that’s not what I said when I realized I’d hung up.) During my sixth game of Pyramid, I had decided that maybe I should be calling the software company instead. So I tried that next. I played nine games of Klondike while I waited for a representative to answer and give me his version of “I’m sorry. We can’t help you.” He did, however, give me the website address for online tech support. That meant creating a password, getting an account, and waiting for a confirmation email. I played four more games while I waited. The confirmation led me to a page of photos from which I could choose the tech person I wanted to chat with online. That’s how I met Joseph, the latest in a long line of people who couldn’t help me. I
