Hellcat idled; Denali sparks GMC Sierra
“Well, hell’s bells,” let me mutter. My longedfor time in the SRT Hellcat version of the Dodge Charger in reality lasted five hours. The Cat is the beast with a 707-horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V-8 engine and 8-speed transmission. I walked from my garden one afternoon last week to welcome the Hellcat into my driveway. That evening, four of us were aboard when I drove away from a smalltown restaurant for a short run of the powerfully built Dodge. Along the way, prompted by the Charger’s driver info center, we detected an oil leak. The big four-door was quickly parked, Chrysler execs soon reclaimed possession and it is in Detroit getting a once-over and retuning. It will be back; I’ll drive it again, and I look forward to it. What a potentially awesome sedan. In the meantime, let’s talk of my week

the dazzling and cushy Denali trim and a $2,500 package adding the 6.2-liter V-8 power and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine/tranny option is a step above in performance and smoothness over the standard 5.3 V-8 and 6-speed automatic. A new magnetic ride control suspension adds increased containment of body motion by instantly changing damping to meet the demands of the roadway. With Jan along, I got to test the fourwheel-drive capability when we drove the Sierra into Big Thompson Canyon, west of Loveland, during a mid-April snowstorm. The switch of grip controls – from two-wheel to automatic all-wheel to four-wheel-high to four-low is as simple as turning a dial at the extreme left side of the dashboard. GMC’s Denali, named for the vast national park in Alaska, offers bright chrome honeycomb grille, easy-lift and lower tailgate, heated and cooled front bucket leather seating, wood trim, Bose surround sound and navigation with Bluetooth/USB and rearview camera. Big, roomy bins are a highlight in the front center console. The ease of entering and exiting the four doors of the Sierra are aided by 6-inch-wide step rails. Rear bumper cornersteps lend access to the pickup box. Horsepower for the 6.2 engine is 420, with 460 lb.-ft. of torque. The 8-speed smooths shift points and the driver gains more direct control with use of paddle shifters at the steering wheel. Overall fuel mileage for my drives was 17.7 miles per gallon; EPA estimate is 15/21. Options not aforementioned in the $57,820 sticker price were power sunroof, trailer brake controller, lane-departure

Going Green
Planning a green no-fly Colorado vacation
Summer vacation plans often bring up images of jetting off to faraway countries. But is that the green way to go? Whether it is just for a weekend or an extended vacation, we Coloradans can enjoy scenic adventures that need not start at the airport. There’s no escaping the fact no-fly travel close to home is the green way to go. When our children were youngsters, we toured many parts of the United States and Canada. But nowhere have we found more history, beauty, and adventure than in Colorado, which has some of the nation’s most spectacular scenery and adventures. Here are a few suggestions for adventuresome no-fly Colorado trips.
Using public transportation
Using public transportation will always cut down on the pollution because you are not adding more pollutants with your own car. For starters, why not consider a two-day adventure via a casino bus with overnight stays at one of the casino hotels in Cripple Creek, Black Hawk or Central City? The room prices and food costs are very reasonable. With your bus ticket, you also get discounts on food and casino plays to save you green. Call the casino hotels and advertisers listed in this Colorado Gambler for details. Try riding buses or the light rail to get from the suburbs to Elitch’s Gardens or downtown Denver. A good
day trip would be visiting Elitch’s Gardens (one of the rail stops) and the newly restored downtown Union Station hub via light rail. Many light rail lines converge at Union Station now. It is a breathtaking ride on an old coal-powered steam train that runs between Durango and Silverton along the old Denver & Rio Grande Railroad track in the San Juan Mountains. While riding this historic narrow gauge train, we saw incredibly beautiful and rugged mountain scenery. These narrow-gauge trains were the last to serve Colorado’s mining towns in the 1880s. This trip takes over three hours one way and allows over two hours in the mining town of Silverton for lunch and shopping before returning to Durango. Instead of driving your car, try ascending the summit of the famous
The Great Orlov diamond legends
The Orlov Diamond, weighing about 198 carats is surrounded by intrigue, a French grenadier’s plot, a stolen idol’s eye, murder, a royal lover’s gift, Catherine the Great and Count Orlov, and the Russian Royal Scepter - adventures rivaling a James Bond movie. The facts of the Orlov diamond have been lost with time, but it is reported that the diamond once served as an eye of the statue of the presiding deity of the temple of Srirangam in southern India. The man responsible for its removal was a French deserter, a grenadier from the Carnatic wars who converted to the Hindu faith. Whether the deserter did this sincerely or solely to gain access to the statue is not known. During a stormy night he pilfered the stone from the statue’s eye around 1750 and fled to Madras where he would find protection with the British Army, as well as a buyer. He eventually sold the stone to a sea captain for $10,000. The captain, in turn, sold it to a merchant named Khojeh Raphael described as “a complete old scoundrel” for $60,000. Khojeh took it to Amsterdam. Count Gregory Orlov was not a descendent of royalty but came about his title by extraordinary means. Or-

lov’s grandfather was an Imperial Guard for Peter the Great of Russia. In 1698, when Peter the Great barely escaped assassination in the hands of one his bodyguards, he resolved to destroy the Corp altogether. This he did by cutting off their heads by the hundreds. The Czar aided in this bloody work with his own hand and decapitated many of his mutinous soldiers on a big log of wood. One young soldier annoyed at finding the severed head of a comrade exactly in the spot where he decided to lay his own neck, kicked it aside with the remark, “If this is my place I want more room.” The Czar laughing with the brutality of the observation, pardoned the soldier and gave him a post in his new regiment of the guards. The victim founded a family destined to become renowned in Russian history. His son was taken into the ranks of the nobles, and his famous grandson, Gregory, was born in 1734. He was tall and handsome with courage and a reputation as a womanizer. He was at the point of being sent to Siberia to think over his misdeeds when the Grand Duchess, Catherine, interested herself on
his behalf and rescued him from Siberia. Years before, Gregory became romantically involved with a German princess by the name of Sophie Friederike Auguste (who was now the Grand Duchess Catherine, married to Czar Peter, III). Orlov inspired her with the ambition to become the Czarina of Russia. Gregory then conspired with his brothers to overthrow Catherine’s husband, Peter III, “a feeble, drunken imbecile” and set up Catherine in his place. In the revolt of 1762, Catherine ordered her husband into confinement. She did not order his death, but the fact remains that sometime later Peter III was strangle by Alexei Orlov, brother of Gregory. Now as Czarina, Catherine gave the brothers many riches and titles assuring their position in the royal court. Catherine, who seemed unable to refuse Gregory anything, was several times on the point of recognizing him officially as her husband.
14,100-foot Pikes Peak Mountain by cog railway. Get aboard the railway at Manitou Spring west of Colorado Springs. When you reach the summit on a clear day, you can view Denver 75 miles to the north and the Sangre de Cristo Mountain in southern Colorado and New Mexico 100 miles to the south. It takes about three hours for the round trip.
Exploring the Four Corners region
There is scarcely a more beautiful place on the face of the earth,” wrote Captain J. N. Macomb, the leader of the first topographical survey into the Four Corners area. Today this spectacular Four Corners region where four states meet is a popular year-round destination. A good place to start your adventure is Cortez, Colorado, which has ample lodging and restaurants. Known as “the archaeological
center of the United States,” this Four Corners area was once home to over 50,000 Anasazi (Navajo for “ancient ones”) who built urban-like cities over 1,000 years ago. While exploring nearby Mesa Verde, we realized how small these ancient peoples were. Once we had to crawl on all fours through a narrow crack in the cliff. The kids went through quickly, but it took more time for my husband and me to crawl through. One of Colorado’s great “natural” spots in this area is the Great Sand Dunes National Monument, 30 miles northeast of Alamosa. Our youngsters enjoyed romping and roaming about this 57-acre giant sand pile. Thousands of years ago streams dropped their sandy loads on this valley floor. Some of the sand dunes in this area are more than 700 feet high and are among the tallest sand dunes in the world.
Gemstone & Minerals Gregory was on the verge of grasping this great prize when it was snatched away. In 1772, while on a mission to the Turks, Orlov’s credit with Catherine was utterly destroyed by her hew lover, Potemkin. Orlov hurried back to Russia in hopes of repairing his relationship, but was met by an order to travel abroad. It was thus that Catherine always did away with her ex-lovers by sending them on missions throughout Europe. Orlov, mad with rage, set out on his travels and wandered all over Europe. It was during his exile that he heard of the wonderful diamond that Khojeh Raphael had for sale. Orlov spent one day in Amsterdam with Khojeh. Khojeh sold the diamond to Orlov for $450,000 who also procured an annuity for him of $8,000. He presented it to Catherine in an attempt to regain his place as her favorite. She accepted the gift but refused to reinstate Orlov to his former position in the court. While he failed to regain her affections, Catherine did give Gregory a marble palace in St. Petersburg where he eventually got married, had no children, went insane and died in 1783. chase of the diamond for Catherine went more like this: Khojeh previously tried to sell the diamond to Czarina Catherine for a much higher price knowing that she could well afford it. It was beneath Catherine’s dignity to even negotiate with the “scoundrel” even though she wanted the diamond. But she had a plan. Knowing that no other monarch in Europe at that time had the desire nor the money to buy the diamond, she sent an official to Amsterdam, undercover, to negotiate a price. The price agreed by both parties was $450,000, plus, an annuity of $8,000 paid by the Russian government. Then she summoned Orlov to go to Amsterdam to “buy” the diamond and present it to her as a gift to “get back into her good graces.” She accepted the gift, then banished him from the royal palace. I doubt if Orlov or anybody would put up a half million dollars for a “gift” hoping to renew his affair again (which was very cold) and yet procure an annuity from the Russian state as part of the price, then get tossed out of the royal palace for good. Catherine never wore the Orlov diamond, but had it mounted on top of the double eagle in the Russian Imperial Scepter where it exists today in the Kremlin Museum. A replica of the Orlov diamond and other famous diamonds can be seen in the Natural History Museum in Denver.

win,” Jennifer Tey, “The Daughter of Time.”) Back to those worthwhile contributions:
Richard believed in availability of education
• He founded Middleham College in 1478 while in his 20’s, before he was king. • He brought about reforms during his reign such as creating easier access to books and the freer use of printing presses.
Richard was an advocate of justice and made changes in judicial law for greater equity
• He originated the idea of bail while awaiting trial. • He simplified the concept of land ownership by saying that only one person could own a piece of land. Before that ownership could exist in layers making current ownership unclear. • Juries could no longer be made up of jurors all associated with one landowner. • They all had to be separate landowners or associated with different landowners. • All laws had to be written in English, not Latin or French as was the custom, and they had to be posted in towns. • Richard came up with the idea of presumption of innocence until proven guilty. (Perhaps it is only fair to treat his personal history that way too.)
Dr. John Ashdown-Hill and Anna Lee following the Compline Service.
The location of King Richard’s coffinless grave in the choir of Grey Friars monastery was not always a secret. Henry VII who had defeated him in battle had a tomb, an effigy of Richard carved in alabaster, placed over it. Later Henry VIII had the monasteries demolished. Tombs were not disturbed, but over time the weather wore them down, especially one like Richard’s made out of a soft stone. Later landowners knew the location of the grave and marked it, but even that knowledge faded away. It ended up under a parking lot until it was located by historians hunting for the grave and the location of the old monastery.
One day Philippa Langley was in the area where they wanted to look, and she reacted as if struck by a thunderbolt. She knew that she was standing on King Richard’s grave. Because of layers of red tape it was over three years before Philippa and Dr. John Ashdown Hill were able to experience the thrill of finding the long lost skeleton of the King. The historical research of Ashdown-Hill along with his study of the DNA that became proof of Richard’s identity combined with the determination of Philippa Langley and the hard work of a team of scientists and historians brought this search to a fruitful conclusion.

Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day blossomed in America
A
By Rosemary Fetter
lthough Mother’s Day is celebrated widely in the U.S. and around the world, the idea of honoring motherhood dates back to man’s earliest beginnings, and some civilizations still consider the mother the true head of the household. In classical Greece and Rome, the ancients held a three-day festival in mid-March called the Hilaria, honoring the goddess Rhea. According to mythology, Rhea was the mother of Jupiter (or Zeus), who was in turn the father of all the deities ruling Mt. Olympus. The ancient worshippers of Asia Minor, along with the Greeks and later the Romans, also made offerings to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Centuries later, Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. The English observed “Mothering Sunday,” honoring Mom with customs similar to our own, children would pick flowers and take charge of cooking and housework for the day. The oldest son would present mother with a mothering cake, which was usually an elaborately decorated and calorie-laden plum cake. In the United States, the Mother’s Day Movement got its start from pacifist and abolitionist Julia Ward Howe, who wrote The Battle Hymn of the Republic. In 1870 Howe created the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” to call attention to the need for peace by pointing out mothers who were left alone in the world without their sons and husbands after the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. Three years later, she staged a peace protest in Boston, campaigning for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be held every June 2. The woman who made Mother’s Day a national celebration, however, was a teacher named Anna Jarvis. Ironically, she never had any children of her own and spent much of her life in angry protest and litigation against the growing commercialization of the holiday she helped to establish. Anna Jarvis was born in l864 in Grafton, W.Va., where she graduated from Mary Baldwin College. Her mother, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, had organized several “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” in the 1850s to improve the poor sanitation and health conditions in her rural county. After

When Ann Marie died three years later Anna felt guilty that she had not given her mother enough attention, although by most accounts she had been a loving daughter. In l907, on the anniversary of her mother’s death, she invited a group of friends to her home to announce an annual celebration of Mother’s Day. According to popular believe, Anna was inspired by a Sunday school lesson her mother gave, in which she said, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers.” The first service was held in Grafton on the second Sunday in May, the anniversary of her mother’s death. When the ceremony was over, Miss Jarvis gave a white carnation, which was her mother’s favorite flower, to each of the 407 mothers and children present. Mother’s Day is still observed on the second Sunday in May, and carnations are still the symbol, with pink and red carnations reserved for living mothers and white carnations
for the deceased. With the support of a friend named John Wannamaker, who just happened to be one of the country’s most successful merchants, she began a campaign f o r widespread recog nition of the Mother’s Day. She wrote to politicians, religious leaders, newspaper editors and reporters and anyone she thought might have some influence, including Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Gradually, Mother’s Day celebrations began in communities nationwide. In 1909, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for

officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother’s Day. Locally, The Denver Post announced the city’s first formal observance in l911. Three years later, on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother’s Day a national holiday. Jarvis had intended Mother’s Day to be a religious event a n d struggled for years against the holiday’s commercialization. In 1923, she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother’s Day festival, and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention selling carnations for a mother’s group. She even protested the 1934 issuance of a Mother’s Day stamp, which featured the portrait of Whistler’s mother. The painting “Arrangement in Black
and Gray” had been purchased by the French government and exhibited at the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair. Although the Postmaster General apologized to Jarvis, he issued the stamp anyway. Anna Jarvis became a recluse in 1944 after the death of her blind sister, a close companion. Penniless and pathetic, she asked to be admitted to the general hospital. Ironically, the person who initiated Mother’s Day never profited from its success. She died in a sanitarium in 1948 at the age of 84. Colorado women, who had been the second in the nation to win the vote, were among the earliest supporters of a national Mother’s Day. On the day of the first celebration in 1911, The Denver Post reported a day filled with songs and religious services. A national organization called the Mother’s Conference held a fundraiser, selling blue enamel pins with a single carnation for decoration. This year, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on May 10. According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. consumers are expected to spend $21.2 billion in jewelry, flowers, cards, and the time-honored tradition of taking Moms out to dinner.

a mistake as I needed to raise to see where the better was - did he have a King? The turn came a 4h and the original better tossed out the $60 with one player calling. At this point I made my third and biggest mistake. After thinking about it, I tossed in my hand so sure the better had a big pair or at least a King for top pair I threw the hand in the muck. The river came a 3c and both players checked. The player who had led the betting turned over pocket 10’s with the caller tossing in a spade draw - my pocket J’s would have won and all I had to do was call that last bet. So – my best play of the session was reading an opponent and maximizing my win while my worst play was failing to read my opponent and losing money I should have won. The end result: a $32 win for the day. Remember - play your game!

said “I knew that, why didn’t I fold this?” He then stalked away. The play that made this hand was my check on the turn as it convinced him I had a lower pair than his King’s. So, a decent sized win to start the day and a good series of poker plays that maximized the pot. Now, the worst hand! I had moved over the $30 - $60 limit hold em game. I looked down to pocket J’s in the big blind. By the time the betting got back to me there were 4 callers, it was $90 to go - and I called. Here was my first mistake, I should have re-raised to $120 if going to play the hand or simply folded. If I had raised, the other players would have sensed strength and may have checked the bets to me. The flop came Ks - 7h - 9s. The better bet $30 quickly and one player called in front of me. As there was no chance for a raise behind me, I went ahead and called. Once again, this was

if I had bet he would have folded. The river came a 5c, pairing the board and giving me the second best hand with Ace’s full of 5’s (quad 5’s could beat me, but that’s it!) He immediately bet pushing out $80. Well, I sat back and visibly put my thinking cap on. I hemmed and hawed a bit, finally said raise, and pushed out $180. He didn’t like that and showed his irritation by looking directly at me and adjusting his seating position while I did my best to look uninterested. Finally, after a minute or so he looked like he was going to toss his cards in so I put mine next to my chips with my finger ready to push them in - like I knew he was folding and was ready to push my cards to the dealer. Well, that did it - he pushed in a stack to call my bet and when I turned over A’s he stood up, flipped up his Kh - Qc, and
