because the odds say they will, and odds don’t lie. However, luck and skill enter the equation and no one would gamble if the players never won. It is so much fun to defy the odds and win at the slots or table games. Poker players have really developed some great skills in the Texas Hold’em seven-card game. Usually the aggressive players win the money, but some of my friends have a habit of playing for fun and
forgetting that “you don’t have any friends in a poker game.” Playing poker for fun is a far different game than playing for real dollars and cash prizes. Winning a pizza can develop bad habits of play. Gambling is entertainment, one can enjoy the casino dining, entertainment, drawings for prizes, and just hang out. Most people have a budget and especially women will set some gaming limits to either win or lose. Men are more compulsive; we hate to lose and sometimes lose our patience – and that usually means losing money. Patience is a great virtue in gambling. Press your luck when winning and go home when your luck runs out. www.coloradogambler.com Live to fight another day.

Saratoga Casino is the place to win

Black Hawk casino adding more excitement this summer

ust two short years after its grand opening, Saratoga Casino Black Hawk is stirring things up once again. Under new leadership and with a renewed sense of understanding of its clientele, the small casino perched on the corner of Main and Gregory streets in the town’s historic district aims to raise the bar even higher when it comes to customer satisfaction in gaming. “We’re not intimidated by the big guys,” said Saratoga Casino’s newly appointed
General Manager Shawn Harris. “What we lack in square footage, we make up for with the right atmosphere and the right attitude.” The property has undergone many changes since its old Fitzgerald’s days and has done so without compromising the core values that originally earned the casino the loyalty of its guests. The old-world character and charm of the nearly century-old building still echo through the exposed brick walls,

winding stairs and unique intertwining layout. An undeniable sense of togetherness and community can still be felt on the cozy gaming floor, which features less than 600 slots and table games, about one-third the size of Ameristar’s. “The big changes have been mainly cosmetic with extensive maintenance to preserve the old building and add competitive amenities,” Harris said.
The regulars here will tell you that what Saratoga has done best is retaining its exceptional staff, which is still touted as the friendliest in Black Hawk. “One of the advantages of being a small casino,” said Harris, “is that we can really get to know our guests.” If you visit often, Saratoga’s helpful team will not only remember your name, but also your drink of choice, your favorite machine, even whom you like to play next to. Both front-
line team members and managers pride themselves in truly listening to the players and reading between the lines when necessary. “We take feedback very seriously,” said Harris. “Our most frequent guests refer to us as their second family. They’ve made friends with other players through the VIP dinners and special events and take advantage of the other perks together. Folks like to sit next to each other and catch up while playing. We went back to the drawing board and completely re-imagined our gaming
floor in order to encourage these friendly interactions and make our guests’ experiences friendlier.” Indeed, with games carefully clustered in a manner that reflects the different ways guests prefer to play, the new gaming floor feels both more intimate and more spacious at the same time. “They’ve even taken sightlines into consideration, really focused on the details this time,” boasts a long-time patron. “There is better flow across the entire casino and it’s not awkward anymore.” For Harris, paying attention to what guests
have to say is only the beginning. He acknowledges that the Saratoga Casino team still has a lot of work to do, all based around increasing the comfort and satisfaction of their valued guests. Harris knows that great flow is not the only thing that will draw players to Saratoga and that he has to get creative to outdo the big dogs that have all the resources at their disposal. Harris and the Saratoga team are focusing their efforts on elevated standards of service, while also expanding their fine dining options and adding a new main floor bar. The Mill City Chophouse, on schedule to
open in mid-June, boasts a warm romantic atmosphere and a menu that rivals any upscale steakhouse in Denver. “It’s going to be a quiet place to escape the bustle of the gaming floor for a moment and enjoy a memorable meal you can’t find anywhere else in Black Hawk,” said Food and Beverage Director Brian Gryzb. “Whether you’re using comp dollars for that special anniversary dinner or just want a good steak without breaking the bank, you can do that at Mill City.” It is the opportunity to win that brings any of us to a casino though, and Harris will not let that side of things be neglected.
“We’ve heard some people say that we tightened the machines after the transition from Fitzgerald’s – in my research since taking the job, that couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Harris. “We need to do a better job of communicating how lucky a place to play Saratoga Casino is through advertising and social media. Hopefully, we’ll be able to change that perception to the reality – Saratoga Casino is the place to win.” One way to win even more money in a casino is the various promotional activities, which Harris promises to enhance as well. With a new
marketing director starting soon and the strong desire to prove themselves and impress, Saratoga’s summer giveaways are bound to be bigger than ever. Along with fun entertainment for everyone, in June the casino is giving away a hot tub, and in July – an ATV. “Just wait for the coming months,” promises Harris. “It will be even bigger. Excitement on the floor will be reason alone to come check it out for yourselves.”

was unsuccessful. The death penalty and the firing squad were both entrenched in Utah. Coughlin kept fighting for his life by appealing the guilty sentence that he had received in Ogden on Oct. 30, 1895, to the Utah Supreme Court. He was unsuccessful. His time was running out. On Aug. 7, 1896, the first execution since statehood took place when Charles Thiede was hanged for slitting his wife’s throat. Those in charge of this hanging decided to be original. Instead of a more standard hanging, which could be a “tortuous and disturbing spectacle,” the state decided to try a new method. The victim would be jerked upwards suddenly by a counterweight. In this case, the force of the dropping counterweight was not enough to break Thiede’s neck. He strangled for 14 minutes before he died. Because of the Eighth Amendment it was a strong concern of the United States Supreme Court was that victims of capital punishment die with dignity. Let us look at whether Coughlin, whose execution was now eminent, was allowed to die with dignity. He was the first person to die by firing squad after Utah statehood. Utah may have held off until statehood was secured. He was also the first to die by firing squad after Utah became a state. If you consider the No. 13

unlucky, Coughlin was unlucky as the 13th person to be legally executed since the beginning of the territorial period in Utah. The night before his execution, Coughlin made up with his mother to whom he had been quite rude earlier. On Dec. 15, 1896, he was taken to Sage Hollow, three miles north of Woodruff, Utah, in Rich County. There he spent a short time with Father Galligan, who said, “Be of good courage.” Coughlin replied with, “You bet your life.” His “goodbye” to the priest was the last he spoke. When he sat in the death chair, he revealed bright new patent slippers. He wore a black silk shirt.
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years
The chair had been securely fastened to the ground. His arms and legs and shoulders were bound to the chair. A black silk handkerchief was tied over his eyes and a target was pinned over his heart. Only 30 feet from the chair was a tent with five holes cut in it so that his executioners would not be visible. One rifle was loaded with a blank so that no man would know for sure whether he had fired one of the fatal shots. The fifth rifle was the one, which Coughlin had used to kill Constable Stagg and special deputy Edward Dawes. Coughlin’s last request was that he not be photographed after death and put on public view. His wishes were respected. Pictures of his execution were taken from a distance, but nothing up close. His coffin was lined with black broadcloth that looked good with his black clothes. One wonders if toward the last he thought of how this sad ending had begun with stealing some strawberries as a lark.

On July 16, 1932, as sunset pinked the Colorado sky above Virginia Road, a curious sight g r e e t e d By Rosemary Fetter callieanne_9@msn.com rural motorists. Chauffeur-driven limousines were creeping up the dirt road to Central City, a near-ghost town since its gold rush days. The cream of Denver society, garbed in glamourous 1870s attire, had come out to celebrate a landmark event, the debut of the restored Central City Opera House. Down the hill, Black Hawk residents gawked at an equally dramatic sight at the railroad station. Glittering socialites bound for the once-famous rush settlement were greeted by antique buggies or surreys that whisked them off to the grand premiere. The Colorado Southern Railroad ran the passenger train for that evening only. Gradually, the Denver travelers converged on the lovingly refurbished old building, taking their seats for its first production of the 20th century. The magic held through the evening. Which came first, Camille or La Traviata? The Lady of the Camellias (Camille), a novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils, was based on his brief love affair with Marie Duplessis, a beautiful young courtesan whose legions of admirers included composer Franz Liszt. First published in 1848, the book became a stage production in 1852. Inspired by the play, Giuseppe Verdi put the story to music in the 1853 opera La Traviata, with the female protagonist, Marguerite Gautier, renamed Violetta Valéry. Marie Duplessis died of tuberculosis in 1847 at the very young age of 23, with her husband, the comte de Perregaux, and her former lover Gustav Ernst von Stackelberg in attendance. Shortly after her death, her belongings were auctioned off to pay her debts. Her funeral was held in Montmartre cemetery, where she lies.

The famous movie actress kept the audience spellbound, transporting everyone back to a tragic and romantic past. Ida Kruse McFarlane convinced her husband’s family to donate the theater to the University of Denver, suggesting that a restored theater could serve as a venue for an annual Central City summer dramatic festival. In 1931, the University accepted the gift and established the Central City Opera House Association. Fundraiser Anne Evans headed the effort, assisted by Ida McFarlane and Denver muralist Allan True. Inspiration and funding for the first festival came from Denver arts patron Delos Chappel. After that highly successful opening more than 80 years ago, the theater continued to gain public acclaim, culminating in the production of its first grand opera
in 1941. A popular presentation of Harvey by Denver playwright Mary Coyle Chase inspired an annual festival format of two operas and a play. The tradition continued until 1984, when an operetta replaced the theatrical production. Over the decades, the Central City stage has welcomed such Broadway greats as Helen Hayes and Katherine Cornell along with Hollywood personalities like the bombshell May West. In a 1949 production of Diamond Lil, a la Lillian Gish, West wore real jewelry on stage. This year’s festival runs July 11 through Aug. 9, and features La Traviata and Man of La Mancha, along with various related events, including the world premiere of Don Quixote and the Dutchess.
