When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within. He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands. He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers. He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries. He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance. He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation: For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us: For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States: For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world: For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent: For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury: For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies: For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments: For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever. He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us. He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people. He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation. He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands. He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions. In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people. Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends. We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Ten Years and Going Strong…Century Casino!
Ten years ago, Century Casino was building a new casino experience in the heart of the old mountain town of Central City. This month, Century Casino Central City is building to a 10th Anniversary celebration on July 4 with a $10,000 Grand Prize Drawing to cap off the event. “We are excited and very proud to be celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary” states Mickey Rosenbaum, Century’s general manager for all 10 years. “It

seems like yesterday that we were scrambling with the final touches in putting the project together in anticipation of opening day.” Century Casino revived and reshaped the uncertain future of Central City and has established a strong presence of gaming for Central City during the past 10 years. The original buildings of the Golden
Rose and Tollgate casinos were incorporated with new construction to form the full city block footprint of Century. A newly constructed 500 car parking garage was built which connected to the casino via an enclosed bridge walkway. “We have been the main parking artery for Central City since opening and the garage bridge was designed to provide easy Main Street access for all businesses, including the summer Opera patrons” says Rosenbaum. “We continue to remain the center of activity for Main Street Central City and hope to expand the role even more in the future.” July 4 is noted as a day of celebration and activity every year, but Century is definitely the place to be this year! They’ll be awarding a total of $20,000 cash on

At some point in the early 60’s, Martin was working on the old 1948 Kaiser when the little jack stand he had supporting it collapsed and the car fell on him. He nearly died and was a long time recuperating. Even though he had religiously done his assessment work on the property for the six years prior to his accident; that year he did not get the paper work in on time and the BLM said, “Move the house or we will blow it up.” The BLM gave him two years to get it done. It took him four, but he was working on it. In 1965, in preparation to move the house, Martin braced all four corners, wrapped it with 5/8” steel cable, low corner to high corner. Then he dug a hole under each corner of the home, placed a larger block of stone in the hole, set a 12 to 15-ton hydraulic bottle jack in each corner and started jacking the structure up a half foot at a time. It took him about two years to decide where he wanted to move the old house. He had about four spots to check out.

tractor but he agreed to pull the house down the hill. Problem was, he got half way down the hill and the house was moving faster than he was, so he pulled it into the meadow and everything stopped. Obviously, Charlie had no experience moving houses. That was in 1968. It took Martin about two more years to get the old house ready to go the last half mile to where it now sits in Chase Gulch. He went out and found two old dump trucks with no beds on the frames and then he backed the trucks up under the center of the house. He had to jack the house up until it was at least four feet in the air so he could get the two trucks side by side beneath the house clear up to the cabs. He chained the two trucks together, secured the truck beds to each other and then to the house. Finally, one Sunday, Martin and his friend Wallace got in
the dump trucks, and with his friends George and Karen driving two pickup trucks in front to help pull, they pulled the house through a fence west of the mine dump and down the road to the bridge. (Martin had widened the bridge so they could get the house across it.) About two-thirds of the way up, they ran out of power. About that time, Morris Stein came along and he pulled up into the back of the old house and started pushing. After they got the house up by the apple tree (no longer there), Martin proceeded to get a hole dug for a crawl space under the house. First, he used a crawler tractor to dig a hole, 20 feet by 30 feet, about four feet deep. Then he proceeded to fill the hole with anything strong enough to hold weight. He used planks, lumber, old doors, boards, tabletops, whatever he could find. On top of all the debris, he laid boards. Then he began to execute his great plan-with the chassis and wheels of the dump trucks still under the house, he and his friend, Fruche, proceeded to use pickup trucks to manipulate the 30-foot house up to the hole. At that time, Martin and Fruche were between 60 and 65-years-old. They used cable chain and pulleys and ran cable from the house to each vehicle thru a pulley system in two places to get the right angle to tug the house into place. Each truck pulled in a certain way to make the house go a certain direction, moving the house a fraction at a time. To say the least, it was a very time consuming project. After getting the house in about the position Martin wanted, he then had to jack the house up enough to get the truck chassis and excess wheels out from underneath, plus all the boards, logs and other debris he’d put in the hole. Then, Martin had set out to find large rocks to build a foundation at least four to five-foot-high for the house to rest on. Some of the rocks weighed at least 500 pounds. These he loaded in the pick-

up with a come-along, using poles to skid the rocks into the truck and then putting them in place under the house. Then he used jacks to let the house down onto the rocks. It wasn’t very level. Two weeks later, I went up to see how he was doing. He had everything cleaned up and the house positioned just way it is now.

Black Hawk expands community support and welcomes to town the EAGLESmart Convenience Store The City of Black Hawk is happy to welcome a much needed amenity to town. Situated next door to the Black Hawk Post Office on Clear Creek Street, residents and visitors will now find EAGLESmart Convenience Store, an innovative fundraising branch of the Gilpin County Education Foundation (GCEF). The mission of the non-profit foundation is to provide additional resources to better the education of Gilpin County students. GCEF has designed EAGLESmart to provide real-world business experience as part of a new program offered to students of Gilpin County School. “The foundation approached the city last fall to discuss the possibility of leasing the open commercial space. It was the perfect concept for the city to further support the school community,” said Mayor David Spellman. “We are enthusiastic
Gilpin RE-1 School Board and the Gilpin County Education Foundation to be associated with such a caring and willing partner as Black Hawk,” said Craig Holmes, foundation board president. “Students from Gilpin County RE-1 High School will soon fulfill the vision to get real, practical educational experience in inventory management, marketing, plan-o-grams, space management and customer service, to name a few.” In addition to the city’s support of the new program, the city continues to contribute to the school through the Education Enhancement Tax. In 2008, the registered electors of the City of Black Hawk approved an increase in the sales tax rate from 4% to 5.50% for the purpose of providing financial support to the Gilpin County RE-1 School District. The funds collected are intended solely for costs incurred in the classroom for educational purposes, promoting a positive learning environment for Gilpin County students. To date, the city has remitted $5,293,550 in Education Enhancement Tax to Gilpin County School District. For the Gilpin County School District fiscal

A folksinger’s journey Dick Weissman would rather be in Colorado
The sharecropper thing Born in Philadelphia in 1935, Weissman was attracted to the rawness of folk music by virtue of the slick pop otherwise permeating the city that launched Dick Clark’s American Bandstand in the mid-1950s. As Frankie Avalon and ducktailed Fabian were getting the grease, Weissman was more interested in the less squeaky wheels of folk and blues. “It was natural for me to go for a kind of music that had nothing to do with anything I knew anything about,” he said. “I was fascinated by the whole sharecropper thing, the prison songs, the people in the Appalachians. I’d never met anybody like that.” Weissman wasted no time in getting to New York City, whose burgeoning Greenwich Village folk revival was bringing new life to traditional music and a range of fresh singer-songwriters influenced by it. Before long, Weissman was sharing a stage with the rugged likes of John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee while playing sessions with the New Christy Minstrels and Colorado’s own Serendipity Singers. As an ABC staff producer and session player, Weissman would step well outside the folk tradition, cutting sides for R&B players and commercial jingles, and accompanying or producing an unending potpourri that included Doc Severinsen, Steve and Eydie Gorme, and even fellow Philadelphian Chubby Checker, who took an ill-advised twist in musical direction.

Those words were so true for transplant Dick Weissman that the state’s unofficial singer-laureate John Denver sang a song of that title after banjoist Weissman, a former New York folkie, “picked” the Rocky Mountain state as his home away from home. “I guess he’d rather be in Colorado,” the lyrics went. “He’d rather play his banjo in the morning when the moon is scarcely gone. up and do something to relax. A stack of junk mail has taken over my kitchen counter and I start going through it. It’s a boring job and I start to feel sleepy. Just one more piece and I’ll head to bed. Wait a minute. This one doesn’t look like junk mail. It’s not. It’s a letter from my bank telling me my account is one of many that has been hacked and that I should check with one of the credit rating
agencies to make sure there’s been no “suspicious activity” using my information. One does not sleep the night after opening mail like that. The next night either. Exhibit C: I check into a sleep clinic one evening to have a sleep study. I’m hopeful all my sleep problems will be diagnosed, I’ll be cured and I’ll be a happier and nicer person because of it. It turns out a sleep clinic is like an expensive hotel with none of the amenities, including comfortable beds. Mine is sunken in the middle, like a sumo wrestler has been sleeping on it for years. All that keeps me from sinking into it is the dozen of wires I’m hooked up to. I don’t see how anyone can sleep in this place, but they must because I hear snorting and snoring all night long. In the morning, I leave the sleep clinic feeling more tired than I’ve ever felt in my life, which doesn’t seem
right after a stay in a sleep clinic. It’s like leaving a restaurant hungry. I’ve been awakened by fire alarms when there was no fire, a grandfather clock chiming every hour on the hour and a well-meaning house guest who wanted to tell me good night. I was once forced to haul pillows and blankets to a hotel bathtub because I was sharing a room with a dainty, little woman who snored like a grizzly bear. I’m not normally a conspiracy theory kind of person, but you can see why I might be getting suspicious. And tired. Very, very tired. That’s why I crave naps. It’s the highlight of my week to settle in on a Sunday afternoon, close my eyes and catch a few Zs. And then the phone rings.
