We went on a field trip recently with the board traveling to visit the Buffalo Bill Museum located high above the City of Golden. Ten of the dozen board

members made the drive up to Lookout Mountain to the famed museum, invited by Jim Friesen, director of the Denver Parks facility. The museum is visited by more than 65,000 people every year and contains more than 8,000 artifacts from Buffalo Bill’s western experiences and traveling Wild West Show. The gravesite is spectacular with a wide panoramic view of the Front Range and mountains to the north and south. No wonder Buffalo Bill chose this location for his final resting place. They wanted him in Cody, Wyo., but he chose Denver. Read more on the Buffalo Bill Museum and see photos on page 12: www.coloradogambler.com

Similar to Las Vegas and Reno, many casinos have player’s cards where members receive points for play at slots and table games. These points can be used for fine dining, buffets, rooms and gifts as the points accumulate, just like credit card points for airline travel. The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and the same applies to a woman’s purse. One tends to gamble a bit, either before or after having a delicious dinner. Central City and Black Hawk casinos continue to expand and improve with all of the amenities from swank hotel suites to gourmet steakhouses. Along with the gourmet menus, there is Dunkin Donuts at the Mardi Gras and submarine sandwiches at Canyon, along with some home cooking at the Wild Card. Johnny Z’s has a great restaurant close to the Central City Opera House for dinner before a performance. The meals can fit the occasion and the budget. It is a pleasant reward to check the points on your player’s card and see that one qualifies for a few complimentary meals. Make sure you register for a card before you start to play any games. Even though the meal may be complimentary, don’t overlook the servers who scurry back and forth with drinks, ice water, bread and butter, and add to the enjoyment of the meal. Buffalo Bill Museum is Colorado treasure

Colorado History

By Bob Sweeney

High on Lookout Mountain overlooking the first territorial capitol of the state in Golden is the tomb and museum of famed soldier, scout, showman, sharpshooter, and legendary icon William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody. A well-marked exit off of I-70, directly west of Denver, winds up a narrow paved highway to the museum located in Lookout Mountain Park, owned and operated by the City and County of Denver. A pothole-laden entrance greets visitors to the famed facility that holds more than 8,000 artifacts from the life and times of Buffalo Bill. The facility has been operated by Jim Friesen for the past 25 years and has a leased gift shop, and café along with the museum. The facility exists to preserve the memory of famed William F. Cody “Buffalo Bill.” To this end, the city maintains the Cody gravesite and related structures at Lookout Mountain Park that has a panoramic view of the Front Range selected by Cody himself as his final resting place. Cody, Wyo., wanted Bill’s gravesite badly and made historic moves to take Bill away, but was thwarted in their efforts to remove Bill’s remains. The museum collects, cares for and interprets the artifacts associated with Cody and his life and times between 1846 and 1917 and records Cody’s ongoing influence on American culture. In 1882, a young man named Johnny Baker joined the first cast of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. It was the beginning of a friendship between Baker and Cody that lasted until Cody’s death in 1917. Cody treated the younger Baker like his

Over the years, Baker performed many jobs with the Wild West Show, eventually becoming a sharpshooter with equal billing to Annie Oakley. As Buffalo Bill got older, Baker acted as both show manager and right hand man to the aging Cody. Cody died in 1917 and was buried at the Lookout Mountain site. In 1921, Baker opened the Buffalo Bill Memorial Museum adjacent to the gravesite property. The artifacts in the museum were items he had collected over the years and had gathered from the many friends who had performed with him in the Wild West Showa. Mrs. Cody herself provided objects, although she died and was buried next to her husband shortly before the museum opened.

The final resting place for Buffalo Bill and Mrs. Cody in Lookout Mountain Park high above Golden, Co. In order to provide himself with a livelihood as caretaker of the museum, Baker ran a gift shop and café. The City of Denver owned the property, but the Bakers owned the artifacts and ran the museum and shop. They called the building “Pahaska Tepee” after Cody’s hunting lodge of the same name outside of Yellowstone Park. After Johnny Baker’s death in 1931, his wife Olive continued to operate Pahaska Tepee until her own death in 1956. At this point, under an earlier agreement, the collection became the property of the City of Denver. After taking an inventory, the first written recording of the collection, the city hired a concessionaire to run the site and take care of the collection. The first opera-

During the 1970s, the city hired a curator to manage the collection and the museum began to develop a separate identify from the gift shop and food sales and the concessionaire’s direct involvement with the museum ended. There are presently over 8,000 artifacts in the museum’s collection, including archival items, historic photographs, 3-D objects and lithography of the Wild West shows. Many of the artifacts are unique, such as Buffalo Bill’s show outfits and Sitting Bull’s war bonnet. A collection of rifles and weapons are displayed that were used by Buffalo Bill. At the core of the museum are more than 1,000 items collected by Johnny Baker in 1921 when the museum first opened. Among the artifacts is the Medal of Honor bestowed upon Buffalo Bill for military services as a scout and Civil War service. Because of the collection’s significance, the museum receives many research requests from schools and colleges across the world. In the past three years, photographs from the museum’s collection have been used for an exhibit at Disneyland Paris, on a postage stamp in the Republic of Georgia, and in several documentaries on PBS. The museum is supported by the SCFD funding, admission fees, donations and has an estimated 500,000 visitors each year from the Denver metro area, Colorado and many international visitors. The facility has a small admission fee and offers group rates. Parking is free and the lot and entrance need immediate resurfacing by the city. This facility is a state treasure of immense proportions for the history of the West, Colorado and American history. This is a very impressive place and is open daily. Visit www.buffalobill.org.

I don’t recall what my son was eating when I took our baby food photo, but it must have been beets, tomatoes, or a combination of both because he looks like he just had a shaving accident, except he wasn’t shaving yet. I saw no photos of a royal baby lying on his or her father’s chest as they both snooze either.

That’s the other most common baby photo in American photo albums. You never see a photo of a new mom like that. Mothers don’t sleep for the first two years of their children’s lives and only for short spurts after that. I imagine Kate has hired help, so she may be able to catch a nap. We probably still won’t see a picture of it though. In all the photos I found of her, she looked far too distinguished to be caught napping, and yet she looked better rested and more relaxed than most mothers of newborns. Or at least, better rested and more relaxed than I did when I had a newborn—and quite possibly than I have at any time since. And royal siblings are either especially good at hiding their true feelings, or they really aren’t disappointed that they didn’t get a puppy instead. Conspicuously absent were the most common baby photos found in American photo albums. I saw no pictures of any royal child in the bathtub or covered in baby food.
