Peak to Peak Rotary has aided projects worldwide in its dozen years of existence. Recently, the club partnered with the Peace Corps to build 100 community latrines for villages in the mountainous area of Panama and are partnering with a Rotary there to build a water system next. Road trip to Vegas baby
L
ast Friday night, the wife and I made a spur of the moment decision to head to Vegas Baby – no kids, no dogs, BY and three days at the LARRY tables. After checkJOHNSON ing in at The Venetian Hotel / Casino on Saturday morning and taking a snooze in the 102 degree sunshine at the pool, it was poker time. First, time to take care of the wife. Two tickets to the stage show Rock of Ages for the late Saturday show. With that done, we headed over to my old haunt, The Bellagio Poker Room. I was stunned to see the lack of larger “limit” games. The $15 - $30 and $30 - $60 limit games were now $20 - $40 and $40 $80 with only one short-handed $20 - $40 Limit Hold em game going. Time to adjust. Instead of a short-handed expensive game, I jumped into the $2 - $5 No Limit game. Luckily, I had played the $2 - $5 up in our mountain towns for
poker talk
years so I was prepared. One big difference apparent early on was that this was a true “no limit” game with many bets larger than the $100 maximum allowed in Colorado. I bought in for $500 and found my first hand 15 minutes in with an Ah – Jh. I was two spots off the button with 3 callers in front of me and raised to $40, with one player behind me calling. I was first to bet with the flop coming As – 10s – 2h, giving me top pair with a decent kicker and a backdoor flush draw. I bet $60, he thought about it, and folded a pair of jacks face up. I played nearly three more hours and walked away a $180 winner. Time for the show. The stage show of Rock of Ages is a wild two hours of ‘80s music pounding down with a fun story behind it. The best part – heading to The Bourbon Room after for an after party that is true ‘80s.
On Sunday morning, I headed downstairs to The Venetian Poker Room (with a slight Vegas hangover). I was amazed that the trend continued with the focus on the “No Limit’’ games with multiple $1 - $2 and $2 - $5 but no larger “limit” games. I was able to get right into a $1 - $2 game and it was rocked up tight. Very little play, lots of big raises and mostly small pots. I couldn’t squeeze any sizeable win during the two hours I was there, walking away losing $24. While the room was beautiful and the service was good – it was just slow. Next over to Caesars Palace and I was excited – all the traveling players in Black Hawk rave about the poker room. But first, a picture at the front desk where the famous spot from the movie The Hangover is filmed where Alan asked, “Does the real Caesar live here?” was a must. Caesar’s had a very nice poker room as it is away from the slots. I slipped into a $2 - $5 No Limit Hold em game immediately and once again, there weren’t any larger limit games. I played for four hours and had two big hands. First my pocket A’s lost to Kh – Qs. The other player raised $40 before flop and I re-raised to $80 with him calling. The flop came Kd, Qh, 4s, giving him two pair. Luckily he played it badly checking it to me
so my loss was just under $200. Then, I had the 4h – 5s in the big blind and it was raised to $10 with 6 way action. I called the additional $8 and flopped a full house with the 4s – 4d – 5c hitting the board. I was able to nurse it so 3 players called me to the end and won $460. Time to go. From there, I stopped and played for just an hour at The Flamingo Poker Room in a $4 - $8 game but it was slow and I cashed out just $14 ahead. Overall, played 4 poker rooms and had 3 winning sessions for a total of $630. My wife commented on how slow the rooms were compared to previous years and I agreed. I am sad the poker landscape in Las Vegas is losing its multi handed large limit games. In truth, our poker in Colorado is better – in almost every way with higher limit games available, more action / and bigger pots. We finished the road trip with a smooth drive home on Monday with our next trip to Vegas planned for the 3rd week of June to participate in The World Series of Poker at the Rio Hotel and Casino. We’ll see many of you there. How many Poker Championships and World Series Rings can the crew from Colorado bring back? Remember, play your game.

he quiet mountain community of Victor still holds the Victorian charm of the mining camp born in the volcanic bowl of gold mining splendor. Sitting at an elevation of 10,000 feet on the side of Battle Mountain, part of the Cripple Creek Mining District of 1891, Victor is rich in history. One of the few well preserved mining towns in the Rocky Mountains, Victor hosts an abundance of Victorian buildings and gold mining remnants of its mining history, right down to the streets. While Cripple Creek, the center of the district, received the attention and benefits, rich gold mines were discovered closer to Victor, including a mine in the center of the town’s development. Thus “The City of Mines” became the common name of the mining camp, even before Victor was officially platted in 1893. That year, Warren Woods, a Denver businessman, arrived in the mining district with his sons, Frank and Harry. Looking over the area at the foot of Battle Mountain, intending to develop a townsite, they bought out their competitor, the Mount Rosa Mining, Milling, and Land Company, for $1,000. Forming the Woods Investment Company, they laid out plans for a new townsite. On Nov. 6, 1893, the town of Victor, named after Victor C. Adams, a local homesteader, was

platted. Marketing these lots as “gold mines” for the perspective merchants turned out to be quite prophetic, particularly for the Woods brothers. When they broke ground for a new hotel, darn near in the center of the new town, they struck gold. Their future pay dirt came from the gold, not the hotel that became an investment, benefited the Woods and the city of Victor. And that’s how Victor, literally, became the City of Mines. By 1894, construction had begun on the much-needed hotel in the growing mining town. While grading the land for the hotel, at the corner of Diamond Avenue and 4th Street, Frank Woods hit a 20-inch vein of gold, right in the heart of the mining town. Production of the hotel immediately ceased and the Woods brothers traced the vein of gold to the Gold Coin claim, which they quickly bought for a few thousand dollars. A shaft was sunk in the middle of the strike and the Gold Coin Mine was erected on the main thoroughfare of Victor. Within a year, the Woods bothers’ Gold Coin Mine was producing $50,000 a month, and by 1899, an average of $200,000 was the returned dividend to their stockholders. In the meantime, the Woods brothers bought another lot, downhill and

a block south, for their Victor Hotel, built at the southeast corner of Victor Avenue and 4th Street. The opening of the hotel, in July 1894, coincided perfectly with the first completed rail line into the District; The Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad. The showplace of Victor, the new hotel, three stories tall, was the tallest business in town. The wooden frame building, topped by a cone-shaped tower, was technical marvel for Victor. The corner entrance at the downslope of 4th Street, featured enclosed balconies directly above at both the second and third floor levels. Guests were accommodated with rooms all along both the second and third floors. An added feature was electricity throughout the hotel. The four-story pale brick building, rectangular in shape, commanded a large portion of the commercial block. The Grand Opening was held on Christmas Eve, 1899 among a cheery crowd who very much needed something to be proud of in their newly built town. Much larger than the first hotel, this building was built to accommodate businesses, as well as serving as Victor’s finest hotel. The first floor provided offices for lawyers, mining engineers and bankers. In fact, an entire bank, the First National Bank of Victor, owned by Frank and Harry Woods, located on the first floor, had two entrances – one from 4th Street and the other from Victor Avenue and the building lobby. Inside the large open lobby was an elaborate elevator complete with wrought iron bars and a safe locking door, the first in the The Victor Hotel today.

the Woods brothers new hotel also contained the offices of many of the prominent and influential businessmen and leaders in the District. Along with the Woods Brothers Investment Company, both the Colorado Telephone Company and the Western Union Telegraph Company ran their businesses from the second floor. Doctors, dentists and surgeons had offices on the third floor, including osteopathic surgeon Dean M. Bodwell, and general physician, H. G. Thomas, father of famed Victor son, national radio host Lowell Thomas. J. W. Huff and J. E. Ferguson were attorneys with offices also on the third floor. Mining engineers such as Davis & Byler, with the U.S. Deputy of mineral surveyors, also located their offices in the “modern edifice” of Victor. By the turn of the century, Victor had developed into a thriving mountain community. The largest producing mines of the District were on Battle Mountain and Victor prospered. Three railroads and two electric streetcars ran in, out and around the city limits of Victor. Much of the wealth and prosperity was due in no small part to the Woods brothers, their various mining investments, and their Victor Hotel. Going Green
Microwave cooking is cool and green
H
ot summer days are here, and our air conditioners are running up hefty electric bills. When you feel like it’s too hot to cook, know that you can creatively cook cool and green by using your microwave. Microwave cooking saves valuable time and energy, plus reduces summertime kitchen heat. I believe the microwave oven is one of the best kitchen appliances invented in the 20th century. Microwave ovens are great because they cook food in an amazingly short amount of time compared to stovetop, grill or oven cooking. We live in a face-paced world, and the microwave oven is a practical necessity that we often take for granted. It’s great for reheating things quickly, but we are really using it to its full capacity? Realize that it is possible to cook creatively in the microwave with very fine results, but it is necessary to learn what cooks well and what does not. You may already have discovered that some foods just do not cook well in the microwave. For example, meats that need tenderizing and baked goods that need a crisp,
crunchy texture don’t come out right. Large quantities of food also don’t save much time or energy when microwaved. I want to share some information about microwave cookery. Vegetables cooked in the microwave retain more nutrients and flavor than cooking veggies on the stove because there is less water involved. Water sends valuable nutrients down the drain. Corn on the cob is one vegetable that tastes even better when cooked in the microwave. To cook a great ear of corn on the cob, place the whole ear with husks and tassels in the microwave. Cook on high for four minutes. Hold hot ear with oven mitts and use knife to cut off the big end completely. Grab the ear by its tassel and slide the corn out silk free. For microwaving other vegetables, cook leafy veggies about four to six minutes; cook asparagus and broccoli six to nine minutes per pound; and cook carrots a little longer. Pause the microwave half way through and pierce the vegetables with a fork to check for tenderness. If done, carefully remove the
veggies. If the veggies are not quite done, microwave again and check every minute. Naturally tender fish cooked in the microwave is delicious. For a gourmet touchy, top fish may with honey, ground nuts, mushrooms, and other tasty foods. It also may be seasoned with spices, peppers, garlic, zesty orange rind and delicious sauces Cooking times for microwaving fish varies according to weight, shape and thickness. As a rule, it takes about four minutes per pound. Whole fish and thick fish steaks take slightly longer than thin-filleted fish. Perfectly cooked fish will break apart when cut with a fork but will still be moist. For a fast seafood meal, place one pound of fish fillets on a microwave-safe dish (thickest portion to outside). Drizzle with lemon juice. Spread brown mustard on top. Sprinkle with pepper. Cover with vented plastic wrap. Microwave on high four to five minutes. Let stand five minutes to finish cooking. Why not grab a microwave cookbook this summer and try some new recipes that will turn out great without heating up your kitchen? Or converting old recipes to microwaving by shortening the cooking time to about one half or one third.
