It’s World Series of Poker time!
WHOO HOO - the World Series of Poker is once again happening at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas right now with an amazing 73 events scheduled between May 30 and July 22. Cards began hitting the felt with a $565 Casino Employees No Limit Hold em tournament and will continue to fly through the final table of the iconic $10,000 No Limit Hold em World Championship Main Event that finishes up on July 22. Last year’s winner of the Main Event, Qui Nguyen, took home over $8 million and there were 6,737 BY entrants in the tournament. LARRY There has JOHNSON been a change in how the final table of the Main Event will be played this year. It will be spread over a threeday period from July 20 - 22 and will be nationally televised on ESPN/ESPN 2. The play on July 20 will take the final table from nine players to six; the play on July 21 will take the final table from six players to three; and on July 22 the final three players will play until a No Limit Hold em World Champion is crowned. In between Event #1 and Event #73 there is a wide variety of poker tournaments including events such as a new $365 buy in No Limit Hold em tournament known as The Giant; a $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo or better tournament; a $2,500 Mixed Triple Lowball tournament; to even a $10,000 Tag Team No Limit Hold em Championship. There is a special feel about the World Series of Poker with the elite of the poker world rubbing elbows with the everyday

player. While winners receive big payouts, since 1976 each has also received a coveted diamond encrusted championship bracelet. “It is the equivalent of winning the Stanley Cup in hockey or the Lombardi Trophy in football” said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack during the 2006 bracelet unveiling. World renowned professional poker player Phil Hellmuth has won the most championship bracelets in the history of the World Series of Poker with 14 and said, “To me the bracelets have always been a really huge deal, to me more than the other guys, because I knew that they represented history.” I also have found that there are two additional side benefits to being at the World Series of Poker, aside from the tournaments themselves. First are the side games surrounding the tournaments. They are running day
and night, 24 hours a day and there is an amazing variety of all limits and types of games. I have found the play is a bit www.coloradogambler.com coloradogambler cogambler loose in these games as everyone seems to be waiting for a tournament; just got knocked out of a tournament; or wishes they were in a tournament - in other words their minds are elsewhere. Second are the Daily Deep Stack tournaments. These are one day events ranging from a $135 buy in to a $365 buy in and occur each day during the World Series at 2, 5, 7, and 9 p.m. These tournaments attract hundreds of players with very large payouts based on the buy in’s. I am heading down to Las Vegas for my annual World Series of Poker visit for a few days in June and plan on playing in Event #24. It is a three-day, $1,500 buy in No Limit Hold em event with $7,500 in starting chips and 60 minute rounds. The issue for me is, I have been playing the big $30 - $60 Limit Hold em game and tournament play is much different. Three things I need to do - limit the range of hands I will play; ensure I am completely focused while playing; and play an absolute cutthroat game designed to gather as many chips as possible and win the tournament. So - wish me luck! I am on a quest to join World Series of Poker Champions such as the iconic Johnny Moss - winner of the first two World Series of Poker Championships in the early 1970’s; or the universally respected, three-time winner of the Main Event Doyle Brunson; or the well-known champions of some of the first nationally televised Main Events (Private Parking Space/All new stainless steel appliances) during the early 2000’s such as Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer. Remember - play your game and hopefully I will have a great story to write about next month!

They’re too busy looking at their small screens to notice what happens to the big one. Finally, I observe my fellow waiters—as in those who wait, not those who serve those who wait. What do they look like? What are they wearing? If they’re talking on their phone, what are they talking about? I have a column to write, you know. After I’ve taken in everything, I ponder, daydream, and otherwise relax until I can’t stand it anymore. Then and only then do I take out my phone. In this way, I’m becoming more patient and more observant, theoretically anyway. And bonus, and this is no small thing, I’m also reducing my chances of leaving my phone all over town. a swarm of hornets, searching around the clock for the culprit. Numerous theories arose, pinning the deed on everyone from criminals Dickens had once arrested to disgruntled employees and envious fellow businessmen. The list was long, since powerful men tend to make enemies. Naturally the city was astounded when authorities arrested the victim’s oldest son, Rienzi. A suspicious amount of evidence piled up against the young man, who had purchased a high-powered rifle, ammunition and, curiously, a silencer. Detectives found a part of the rifle and some ammunition in his home and the rifle barrel a block away. Plus, Rienzi had no alibi, was $40,000 in debt and stood to inherit a fortune when his parents died, although to be fair, both were already in their 70s. Although it seemed like an open and shut case, his family sup-
ported his protests of innocence, maintaining that Rienzi had been framed, posting bail, and even coming up with another suspect, which proved to be a false lead. When he was found guilty of second degree murder, the Colorado Supreme Court overturned the verdict and set a second trial date in 1921. When the young man was acquitted, he immediately headed for California where he died in the 1960s, still vowing his innocence. The case was never solved. Today, events are still held in the theater, mostly musical performances. At Halloween, the management and the Paranormal Society hold a special program honoring the many ghosts that are said to haunt the theater. They naturally include the man who brought the performing arts to a remote farming community and died mysteriously by an assassin’s hand more than a century ago.
Today, the Dickens Theater is still an active performing arts venue.

Masquerade Ball. On the first floor, Dickens built the First National Bank, of which he was founder and president. The original bank vault, now a wine vault, has become an attraction for guests at the current establishment, The Dickens Tavern. The local newspaper, The Longmont Ledger, also set up shop in part of the building. Dickens spent lavishly on scenery and curtains for the theater upstairs, opening up the stage to minstrel shows, plays, lectures, orators and even club and lodge meetings and high school events. Local shows were free or much less expensive than those offered by the traveling professional companies. Many of the programs sound like fun even today. For example, on June 23, 1899, the Opera House hosted Prof. Gentry’s Famous Dog and Pony Show, featuring “200 aristocratic animal actors traveling in their own special train of palace cars.” Theatergoers were fascinated by an early performance by black pianist Thomas Greene Bethune (a.k.a. Blind Tom), which cost annoyed spectators twice as much as the same show in Boulder, ostensibly because of the enhanced venue. Other interesting performances included a Longmont Talent presentation of “Michael Earl, the Maniac Lover” (Longmont Ledger, Feb. 12, 1897) and frequent appearances by a mysterious performer known only as “The Electric Girl.” Actual operas, however, were rare. By 1915, Dickins was one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the area. Along with his wife Ida, he lived a block down the street from the Opera House in a building that is now an apartment complex. On the evening of Nov. 30, the couple was relaxing in their library when a single shot from a high velocity rifle smashed through the window adjacent to the alley. The bullet caught Dickens in the back and shot straight through, grazing Ida and lodging in the wall. He died almost immediately. Lawmen from miles around descended on Longmont like

When the gold boom fizzled, Allen and Dickens went back to the land, settling in the St. Vrain Valley. Dickins became Burlington’s town marshal and later served in the Colorado Third Cavalry under Col.
