Going Green
Make some green with a garage sale June seems to mark the beginning of the garage sale season in Colorado. You begin to see garage sale signs popping up along busy streets. It’s a profitable green way to recycle your unwanted things. I have conducted garage sales in my own yard and also managed garage and estate sales for charities. The difference in conducting garage estate sales depends on the quality of the merchandise and the way you display and price your things. Before planning a garage sale if you are doubtful about the value of some of your prized collectibles, you should consider calling in an expert or taking them to an antique dealer. Then you might want to just sell them to a dealer or have an expert manage an estate sale for you instead. Remember that people come to garage sales to buy bargains. An old saying is that other people’s junk is someone else’s treasure. Here are some tips. 1. Select a good date and time. Don’t sell during a holiday weekend as many people leave town or are busy with company and social activities. On a regular weekend, start on
a Friday or Saturday morning and end in early afternoon. Serious bargain hunters like to come early for the best selection. Once at an estate sale, we had people standing in line before the sale started. Although when I go to a garage sale, I figure that anything I really need will still be waiting for me a later hour. You might advertise a 9 a.m. start but be ready at 8 a.m. When the weather gets hot, you might close as early as 3 p.m. 2. You can advertise for free on craigslist.com or just buy big legible signs at dollar stores. Place them at busy intersections with arrows points to your home. Keep putting up more signs along the way to lead people to
your home. Get them to stop when they find your place by placing something large and attractive for sale at the front of your yard. I attracted many customers once with my grandmother’s old brass headboard which I overpriced because I really d i d
not want to sell it. I passed it down to my daughter later after she was married. 3. Display things on long tables and price them very reasonably. Usually shoppers are looking for things under $50. Although once we sold an old station wagon that needed expensive repairs to a mechanic who happened by at our garage sale. 4. Skip selling clothes as piles of old clothes do not sell or display well at garage sales. Costume jewelry sells well but fasten pieces to small cardboards, put in small plastic sacks, or place all jewelry in large box with see-thru top near a checkout table. Don’t tempt the shop lifters. Keep your money and change in a secure waist purse. 5. Have a $1 bargain box or make $1 mystery paper bags for odds and ends. Also create a “free box” at the checkout table. If you have lots of things left, sell everything for half price the last hour or two of the sale. 6. To be green, recycle what’s left by hauling everything to a local charity and get a donation receipt for your income taxes.

The Tale of Martin Nelson as told by his son, George Nelson
I’d like to say a few words about Martin Nelson and his life. Tell a few stories: some true, some false, some made up, I guess. Anyway, Martin was born on Dory Hill. That is about two miles north of where the Ameristar is now. Martin’s father, Nils Nilson, and his two brothers came to America sometime between 1850 PAGE 14
them were my father, Martin, and his siblings. After Martin completed the 8th grade, he went to work digging tunnels in the mines on the family property. His three brothers worked in Caribou and his mother and youngest sister were over there so he rode on horseback and then would spend the night and ride back home the next day. When Martin was 19, he and his brothers worked on the Moffat Tunnel. They had a team of horses
and went to work hauling supplies and working for that Moffat tunnel outfit. He’d load up, hook his team of horses up, and go through Rollinsville, over to Nederland and then down to Boulder and load the wagon up at night. He’d spend the night down there and then get up the next morning and drive back up to the East Portal. It took a full day - kind of a rough ride all the way down and up and back in two days. Martin’s oldest sister married Gus Jacobs and they lived in Rollinsville. They had three girls and one boy. Gus and Martin were friendly, I guess. Both were horsemen. Gus was from Germany. He and his brother, Ted, married two sisters Selma and May. May had three girls. In January of 1929, Martin married Dollie Van Matre and I was born in May of 1931. About that time, Martin and Gus were doing a little bootlegging. Martin ran out of booze one night. The man he bought from got mad at him and turned Martin in to a revenuer and he spent six months in the federal pen. Don’t know the exact time and date, but it was about the time I was born. One of my folks told the story later and how when Martin was arrested the revenuers confiscated his new 1932 Plymouth coupe. Martin had followed a known runner of booze up to Tolland, up into the woods and he hid there until they came out. Then he went in and found and loaded up the kegs of booze, took them back to Rollinsville and proceeded to unload the stash onto the dirt floor of the corral at the stable in Rollinsville. He then moved an entire load of manure and straw on top of the
FROM MAGGIE
stash, cleaned up the stable and corral, dusted everything down so that they wouldn’t realize it was just done that same day. And it’s a good thing too, because the bootleggers missed their stash, and came down hunting for it. They went all through town asking questions, asking if anyone had seen anything. So, Martin left it there six months, before he finally unloaded it - started selling a little bit at a time. (The Stage Stop in Rollinsville is where the stables were down underneath the bar. Gus and his family were right straight going up the north old road). Anyway, Martin did all of this, and he went to jail for six months. While he was in the pen, his father and oldest brother passed away. The story goes that his oldest brother, David, fell out of a window at a hotel in Denver. Martin and I weren’t any too happy that they buried my grandfather and uncle up in Central City, so we went and dug them up and took them up to Dory Hill and reburied them. So Dave, Oscar, Grandma and Grandpa, Martin, Wallace, my brothers, my mother and my stepfather - they’re all buried up there on Dory Hill.

Gemstones & Minerals
The 4 Cs of Diamonds: Color, Clarity, Cut, Carat, Now a 5th
The 5th C, lab created, has been added. The diamond, hardest and most brilliant of minerals, is known throughout the world as the chief among precious stones. Diamond is made of pure carbon, the same as a lump of coal, but under certain pressure and heat it forms into a clear brilliant gemstone. The quality, and thus price of a diamond, is determined by the four “Cs,” color, clarity, cut, and carat. Now a fifth C has emerged: the lab created Diamond. First, a little about the four Cs.
COLOR: Fine color in a diamond usually means the absence of color, or a pure, clean or colorless or “white” transparency. CLARITY: Clarity is graded based on the number, location,
sion and power. In fact, the term “Russian diamond” can have two different meanings: lab created diamonds and also those referring to Cubic Zirconia (CZ), a popular diamond simulant. Around the time of the 1940s and early 1950s at the start of the cold war, Russia realized that a source of diamonds was needed that was independent of western control. Diamonds are very important for industrial and military manufacturing and if the supply was interrupted, this would have harmed Russia’s manufacturing capability. Joint efforts were made to discover natural sources of diamonds as well as investigate whether industrial grade diamonds could be manufactured. Both efforts were met with success, and around the mond mine started production, synthetic diamonds were also being produced using the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)
size and type of inclusions, scratches, trace minerals found in a diamond or the absence thereof.
CUT: The cut of a diamond has a tremendous affect on its brilliance. Even if the diamond has perfect color and clarity, one with a poor cut will have dulled brilliancy. CARAT: The weight of a diamond is measured in “carats” and “points.” There are 100 points to the carat, so that a quarter of a carat is 25 points. Now the fifth C: lab created diamonds. The term Russian diamonds brings up romantic images of the fabulously rich and wealthy along with impressions of pas-
method. It was quickly realized that the new material could have jewelry applications. In the 1970s and 1980s, new manufacturing technology, which used microwaves to melt the mineral used to make Cubic Zirconia, meant that large scale production could begin. These gems are now so popular that almost every clear or colored imitation gemstone on the market is likely to be a CZ. A footnote to this story is that the present volume of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamonds that are being produced in the U.S. owe their technology to Russia. Diamonds that are produced by the CVD method are much cheaper than HPHT diamonds. We may never know exactly when the Soviets perfected the CVD technology. It’s fascinating to speculate how many of the sparkling diamonds on the fingers of European socialites over the last 50 years were actually made in a Russian lab.
Identifying Lab Made Diamonds
Good quality lab created diamonds can be hard to identify using normal jewelers equipment, although they can easily be identified in a lab using a device that shines ultraviolet light through the diamond. With ever improving technology, created diamonds are improving in quality, as well as their cost, and are still a very affordable alternative to the real thing. It is easy to become confused by the terminology used by unscrupulous retailers, particularly online. Watch out for people advertising “simulated diamonds” as created diamonds. A simulant is more likely to be a different type of created gem rather than a true created diamond. Beware of the term “authentic replica” when someone is referring to a gemstone; it means “real imitation.”

The Pikes Peak Hill Climb “Unsers’ Mountain”
Trail’s End
The 100th Anniversary The Daytona 500, America’s Race, is the official start of the NASCAR racing season, while the Indy 500 is the climax in IRL open-cockpit racing. The Indy 500 is etched in motor sports history by thrilling racing run by great teams and led by legendary families in racing history. Second and third generations in today’s sport include members of the Andretti family, a fourth generation of the famed A. J. Foyt legend, as well as the third generation of Colorado’s legendary Unser family. With the excitement of the racing sport today, it’s well worth recalling the beginnings of the thrill. And it all goes back to the Unser family. A simple dream and a magic mountain, exactly 100 years ago, that evolved into the Indy 500. It started right here in Colorado. The story of America’s most unique auto race is filled with history, lore and a legendary Colorado racing family. It is the story of ingenuity, camaraderie, competition, and community spirit. It is the race to the clouds, a trail that winds and weaves its way to the top of America’s inspiration point: Pikes Peak. The auto race to the top of America’s most picturesque mountain began as a tourist attraction. It succeeded, and is now known the world over. Spec would be pleased to know his many thousands of dollars spent for the world’s highest paved road is still paying off - nearly a hundred years later. Spec was the wealthy Spencer Penrose of Cripple Creek mining millionaire fame and the money - if not the brains, behind the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. It all started, as these things often do, with a slow economy and a million ideas for a quick fix. Spec had the ideas and the millions to go along with it. In 1914, when the automobile was the new craze sweeping the country, Spec envisioned a grand highway to the summit of Pikes Peak, and to promote the highway, a first ever automobile race to the top. A long two years later, the road was completed, with the
June 7 - 20, 2016
first auto race to the top of America’s beloved landmark taking place on August 12, 1916. With great fanfare, Spec announced the first Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The nationally famous cigar-smoking racer, Barney Oldfield, agreed to the race, but placed 12th in the finish. The winner of that first historic race was Rea Lentz, driving a Romano race car up the 12.5-mile road in 20.55.4 minutes. A grand ceremony was held at the finish line atop the summit. Spec presented an oversized trophy, (on loan) and a cash prize of $2,000. In the mix of all of this racing madness were three local teenage brothers from Colorado City. The Unser boys, Louis Jr., Joe, and Jerry had raced motorcycles as well as cars with other locals. But they had never seen an actual race, let alone in their own backyard. That is until they learned of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Louis and Marie Unser and their three boys arrived in Colorado City in 1909. The Unser family, German immigrants, found a home and improved health for Louis Sr., in Colorado’s climate at the base of Pikes Peak. Louis, a meat cutter by trade, gained employment at the Borscht Meat Market, then located at the northeast corner of 26th Street and West Colorado Avenue. The young family of five lived above the market in the most modest of accommodations. While Louis worked below in the meat market, his Swiss immigrant wife, Marie, raised their boys, with a healthy dash of religion and family values thrown in. The family pride born of the old traditions, seems to have taken root in the boys, however the religion was quite another factor. Louis recalled in interviews years later, “Mother made us attend church, down the street. Boy! We couldn’t wait until it was over

to go play in the fields!” The family later moved to a small house in the 2700 block of West Colorado Avenue, (still standing) where the three Unser boys attended Midland School. After school, the boys often hung around the auto court at 2616 West Colorado Avenue. At the age of 14, Louis, the oldest of the Unser boys, quit school to learn about cars, and more importantly, racing. In an interview, Louis once described the art (or lack of) early day racing, as a “pitch-in effort.”
The Unser boys worked odd jobs to make enough money to buy auto parts. Often, they would “rummage junk yards for tires and such,” Louis recalled. In time, they managed to build a race car with a Studebaker engine, a rusted Ford frame, and rummaged tires and wheels. The body was pieced together bit by bit until finally the Unsers had a race car. Pikes Peak, often referred to as Unser’s Mountain, has been the official racing playground for this famous family. Since that first race, there have been only eight Pikes Peak Hill Climb races without an Unser competing. In 1916, all three brothers competed in the Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb where Joe was the top Unser finisher, placing in the top 10. Thus began the first generation of racing Unsers. Louis was the first Unser to win the race in 1934. From 1934 to 1947, only nine races were held due to the economy and World War II. Louis won eight of those nine races becoming “King of
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years
the Mountain.” The Unser legend was born, although neither Joe nor Jerry ever won the race, but came close several times. Joe finished 2nd four years in a row and was the first Unser to lose his life when testing a car for the Indy 500 on a Denver highway in 1929. Somewhere along the line, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb was dubbed “The Race to the Clouds.” It fit the Unser racing legend, for in 1937, Jerry Unser brought his family of four sons, Jerry Jr, Louie, Bobby and Al into the racing sport at Pikes Peak. This became the second generation of racing Unsers. In 1953, Uncle Louis won his last race to the clouds. By then he was also known as the “Old Man of the Mountain” and had accumulated a record nine wins, six of which were race records. A new era has dawned with the fourth generation of Unsers now racing the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, proving, after 100 years, it is still “Unsers’ Mountain.”

I’m lost. I know a lot of women who are Clothing Store People or Shoe Store People. I like clothes, but to be a Shoe Store Person, you have to be a Shoe Person and there’s only one type of shoe I like: comfortable ones. Comfortable shoes take up a very small area in the women’s shoe department, and I really don’t care to look at men’s shoes. The point is, I only go into the above stores when I need something. I’m not usually tempted to buy. I have plenty of all of this at home, and after I pay for printer ink, I won’t be able to afford a new pen anyway. My favorite of all office supplies are the planners. I have an electronic calendar, but for some parts of my life, nothing beats a good old-fashioned paper planner. The blank pages represent possibility which may or may not be realized, and organization, which never is. Filling out a planner in January with tasks is the highlight of my year. It’s downhill from there since I have to do them all. Still, I love looking at planners. It’s a shame I only need one a year. But that doesn’t stop me from browsing.
