The Last Hand
Gambler
Life is the biggest gamble of all What better way to spend an evening than to drive up the canyon or over the new Central City Casino Parkway, a cool scenic drive and time to roll down the car windows. Don’t think about passing that slowdriving camper ahead of you. Turn on XM or Pandora radio and just relax. The difference in attempting to speed or meandering along with all the traffic is about 10 minutes. And most of the time, there is a Smoky the Bear hiding out somewhere along the gaming trail. Where to play, eat, drink and smoke is an important decision. Most of the gaming regulars know where to go, finding the best meals, the wonderful buffets and the gourmet evening restaurants where the high rollers cash in their earned player’s card points. In recent weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of taking some first-time guests to the mountains. Las Vegas players, they are pleasantly shocked at what they see in the experience and the growth of the casino industry in Black Hawk and Central City. I’ve mentioned before that for the price of airline tickets, cab fares and rooms, a couple can have hundreds of dollars to spend in our local casinos without leaving town. Prizes and payouts are good, and our casinos are very competitive and work hard for new business and satisfying regu-
lar customer. There is every game in the mountains, except Baccarat, which is a simple, yet high-rolling game that is easy to play, as players wager, win or lose on a number. One can wager for the player or the bank to make the number or not. The game once was played with real currency bills and the piles of cash are now replaced with large gaming chips. Asians really love this game and you can find them heavily into the action in Las Vegas. Poker is very popular. I like to watch various poker tour events late at night on TV and learn from watching these professionals compete against amateur players. The pros usually win, but the last river card can make or break the best of the players and chips stacks can change dramatically within just a few hands. I’ve crusaded for years to bring sports betting to our mountain casinos and it would seem possible that the gaming commission could authorize this as a new game without going through the legislative process. Seems to me that wagering on a slot machine, betting on a number, tossing dice or betting on a horse would all fall under the gaming and gambling jurisdiction. We have the mechanism in place to monitor new games and that could easily include sports books.

Her letters, published in The Shaw-Webb Family Papers 1756-1936, give us a rare glimpse of what life was like for those women who followed their husbands into the mining camps. The following excerpts are taken from those papers as shared on thepastispresent.org. After being in Colorado one week, Nancie wrote to her sister “I think you would almost envy us our happiness, it is true we have not many of the luxuries of life, Nancie Colburn Hartford and her but most certainly we have husband Miles lived in a log cabin. many comforts. Our house is country.” made of hewn logs, nicely finished. Nancie put a positive spin on Miles built it all himself. ent from what I expected. I can sit here by the window and count over 20 houses, all within a fiveminute walk, besides two mills, which run night and day. There are meetings every Sabbath a short distance from here, also a school. There is so much novelty and excitement about this kind of life that one cannot be lonesome.” Among Nancie’s early acquaintances was a Mrs. Thatcher who she referred to as “. . . a nice lady formerly of Vermont. Her sister teaches school here.” Two months after her arrival, Nancie went to Central City with Mrs. Thatcher and a Mrs. Bensen to do some shopping. She wrote that she was “. . . really surprised to find so large an assortment of goods here. I never saw a better assortment in any retail store and they ask a good price.” The trip seemed to increase her acquaintance with Mrs. Thatcher, as a few days later she attended a tea party at the Thatcher house and “. . . had a splendid time. There were about eight ladies present. All very fine ladies—Mrs. Thatcher is one of the finest ladies I ever knew. I think so much of her.” In spite of living in a log cabin in a small village, Nancie found a comforting social circle to make her adjustment easy. However, it turned out that removing oneself from civilization does not remove one from human nature. About seven months into her settlement, Nancie wrote to her mother that, while she had some excellent neighbors, she did not think quite as much of Mrs. Thatcher as she had previously shared. Nancie wrote “She is de-
ceitful as she can be. She has talked about every lady on the Gulch, at the same time pretending to be their friend. I don’t like such friends as that.” Just before Christmas 1860, eight weeks after arriving in Russell Gulch, Nancie wrote to her sister, “I like my mountain home very much indeed.” Nonetheless, the beginnings of concerns about making a living on the frontier had already begun to set in. She acknowledged “This is going to be a hard winter at the peak. There are a great many who have no money to get home, no money to even buy their food, and cannot get trusted . . . people expect good times next summer, but this winter money is scarce and provision high . . . Miles almost gets the blues sometimes . . . I tell you this is a hard country to get rich in. Anyone with less pluck than Miles would have left in disgust, but he is all courage. He says he does not expect to get rich, but he is bound to get something worth coming for.” Even after the arrival of spring, Nancie continued to be concerned about money. In May 1861, she told her mother, “I go to walk every morning after Miles has gone to work on his claim. It does not pay very well.” Come November, Nancie wrote that “Miles commenced mining in the spring, but had such poor luck that he gave it up in July and commenced teaming. He has three yoke of oxen. Now we laugh considerable about his coming to Pikes Peak to drive oxen, but he says he’ll do anything to make money.” After two years of constant toil and worry, Nancie wrote to her mother “You know little about this

country by what the papers say. There is now and then a claim paying pretty well, but they are rare. Miles says he shall not mine any more in this country.” He came to realize something many miners had realized before him: you make more money at the mines doing something other than mining. By mid-1862, the Hartfords built a dairy farm with 14 cows, which they milked themselves, and Nancie sometimes churned butter. She wrote to her mother “I hardly get time to think, I have so much to do, but by selling the milk and butter we do pretty well. Better than mining.”

For a time, they had a partner, Joseph Roma. Roma, who’s given name was Giuseppe Joseph Roma, soon running began his own bootlegging operation. known. What is known, is that Roma, known as “Little Caesar” both for his ruthlessness as well as his territorial hold in North Denver’s Italian section, had made a lot of enemies. It was only a matter of time before his enemies would react. It happened on Saturday, February 18, 1933. Joe Roma was alone in his comfortable bungalow-style home on 3504 Vallejo Street in a quiet neighborhood in North Denver. Sometime around the noon hour, Joe Roma was shot to death in the living room of his pleasant home. He was 38 years old. When Roma’s wife, Nellie, returned home following a visit with her mother, she discovered her husband slumped in his favorite chair. When she attempted to wake him, she realized he was badly hurt, if not dead. A pool of blood oozed from his body. Nellie Roma pulled him to the floor in an effort to revive him. With no result, she immediately called the police. Squad cars raced to the residence on Vallejo Street.
While detectives were sent inside the home, other officers surveyed the exterior including doors, windows and the lawn for any signs of evidence of intrusion. Denver law enforcement soon came to a conclusion. Giuseppe Joseph “Joe” Roma was murdered by people he knew. Roma had been shot seven times, six of those bullets were to his head. Blood and brains were sprayed on the wall behind the chair. Roma must have either been playing his beloved mandolin or holding it, as it was laying haphazardly in the chair, with a bullet hole in it. Next to the chair was a toppled music stand which had held a copy of Singer’s Complete Mandolin Methods. The detectives found shell casings near the piano stool on one side of the chair where Nellie Roma had found him. Shell casings were also found near a chair located across from where Joe Roma had been shot. This indicated that Roma was shot in a crossfire. The shell casings were of .38 and .45 caliber. The scene of the murder, coupled with no sign of forced entry, led the police to believe that Roma was killed by men he not only knew, but felt comfortable with in his home. This theory was reinforced by Nellie Roma’s statement to the officers, which was reported on the front page of the February 19, 1933, issue of the Rocky Mountain News: “No stranger could have got into the house. Joe wouldn’t let a stranger in. I don’t know who did it. I don’t know of anyone who was coming to see him, or of anyone expected.” The front page of that February 19, 1933, issue of the Rocky Mountain News was devoted to articles covering the mob hit. One article described the widow, Nellie Roma: “...the beautiful head with its faultlessly-featured Madonna-face…. Her hair is raven black and clusters in waves and curls about

her brow, framing her face and emphasizing the clearness of her almond-toned complexion. Her figure is slight and girlish and her eyes black and velvet soft. The youthful widow sobbed, ‘I loved him so much, so much.” Services for Joe Roma were held on February 23, 1933. Ironically, it was one of the finest funerals ever conducted in Denver. The Rocky Mountain News covered the elaborate affair in their issue of the following day: “The pageantry could rival the splendor attending the burial of gangland kings in Chicago.” Denver detectives continued their investigation of Roma’s murder. Nellie Roma told the detectives that Louis Brendisi, James Spinelli and Eugene “Checkers” Smaldone, had arrived a few hours before she left the house. The three men were brought into police headquarters for extensive questioning. All three provided alibis. The men admitted they were in the Roma home, visiting with Joe, but bid the man goodbye and left shortly after noon, to see a movie on Curtis Street. The three men even produced the ticket stubs. The detectives were never able to shake the men or disprove the alibi. With no leads as to the murderer, the newspapers ran editorials demanding action. Under a headline which read, “That’s That,” the Denver Post wrote: “Joe Roma’s assassination emphasizes that ‘Crime Never Pays.’ The ‘big shot’ of today in the gang world is the bullet-riddled target of tomorrow. Greed and envy flourish in gangland. Honor among crooks is an illusion. If they had any honor, they wouldn’t be crooks.” Excerpt from the author’s book, Murder in the Mile High City, with Linda Jones. Now available.

Thinking About Poker: After a While…
H
ave you ever had to put things you like to do o n the proverbial ‘back burner’ and just leave it be for a while? Well, that’s what has happened to me as a deadline for others in my industry has just wiped out any spare time for poker. If you have missed my articles in The Gambler, that’s the reason why. After the end of July I will take some time off work and should be able to ply my avocation in the felted arena and come up with more good things to write about. I did, however, have a chance over Memorial Day weekend to play once and its experiences
ing and getting two callers. I tripped up on the flop and filled a house on the river to beat Aces up: Nice start! Shortly after in the BB and an unraised pot with J-6 I again flopped trips and found another full house on the river for another good takedown. This was something I could get used to! Later four to a straight flush and two pair didn’t come – nor a flush either – and I dropped a few chips to a bigger two pair. Well, phooey! Another hand saw an opponent with A-Td catch a flush after I flopped trips once again. Okay, a lot up and now a little given back; that’s the nature of the game, isn’t it? A number of rounds later Pocket J’s won a large pot when nothing coordinated hit the flop, turn or river. A few hands later Pocket 9’s had the same result even though the board paired on the river and
then which I’ll address today. You may recall I went back to basics last fall and throughout the spring and did well – only had one loosing session in several months. So the day I was able to play, after better than two months away, would be a good test for the ‘new Drew’ and to see how much I remembered of my new awareness and technique. I began slowly; almost an hour had gone by with me mucking most hands and the occasional raise before the flop stealing the blinds here and there. My first real playable hand was Pocket Q’s from middle position and after rais-
was played in a threatening manner by the opponent. Then the following hand came up which validated my new awareness and style of play. In an unraised pot and me in the BB with J-9 off-suit I again flopped two pair. My bets led the way down to the river when my opponent raised my bet by the max - $100. Now I had to ‘go into the tank’ and replay in my mind what my opponent did, when he did it and my understanding of why he did it. I saw him just meekly follow my bets until the river, which did not coordinate the board any. I did not put him on trips as my two pair were the two highest cards on the board. I felt he was thinking I could have trips and if he did as well, mine was likely to be the bigger set. Thinking I was the leader by a nose, I called his bet, then pulled in a larger pot when his
Gaming lower two pair could not pass muster. Good read, Drew! After another four hours in which I took a dinner break the game turned slow and lackluster and so a little while later I racked up about twice my buyin and scattered back home. Haven’t played poker since and it will be another three to four weeks before I can again; just in time for another article. But I felt satisfied with my play and vindicating this new style of play. Reread some of those older articles for the full details, but it gets down to the old mantra: Patience, Position and Power. Have the patience to wait for powerful hands then use advantages of position [if you have it] to hit hard and hit fast. Works for me … so until we can play again, keep thinking about poker!

According to that font of all knowledge, the internet, the way some fitness equipment companies get those miraculous before and after photos does not involve miracles—or honesty. In the before photos, subjects stick out their guts and slouch like question marks. In the after photos, they stand tall and suck them in like it’s a day at the beach. The right angle, the right lighting, a little Photo-

Or fall down the stairs when you’re hauling it to the attic to store with the Red Exerciser and the Hula Chair you bought a few years back. 4) And that leads me to my final reason you should think long and hard before you purchase the Belly Be Gone or any other fitness gizmo, and that’s this: Even the finest of exercise equipment only works if you use it. And I don’t mean to hang your ironing on. Dorothy Rosby is the author of the new humor book, I Didn’t Know You Could Make Birthday Cake from Scratch, Parenting Blunders from Cradle to Empty Nest. The Last Hand
Life is the biggest gamble of all Continued from page 2 Old players know the high risks of gambling. If you like to win, you must learn how to lose. It has been said that gambling is like boxing. You have to learn how to take a hit. The most common mistake that many gamblers make is not knowing when to quit while ahead of the game. Gambling tends to be money management and one should set some limits on winning and losing before ever sitting down at the tables or riding one of the buses up to your favorite location. I have a good friend who loves to play poker and he goes up often. He goes to have fun and forgets that he should be there to win, not lose. Coach Lombardi is crediting with saying, “Show me someone who likes to lose and I’ll show you a loser.” He loses a lot because he just enjoys the action. Losing is not fun for anyone. Remember that you have no friends in a poker game. Winning comes with practice, patience and sheer good luck. The cards make the player, but the player
has to play the cards right, knowing when to call, fold, and in blackjack when to hit, double and split. I never split or double into a dealer 10-face card. This is a common bet where many players will double a 10 or 11 with the dealer sitting on a face card. Splitting pairs against a 10 is even worse. One of the toughest calls is a player 12 against the dealer deuce-2. I’ve had better luck at passing and letting the dealer take the last card. Alert players should be watching the other players’ hands and especially the face cards. Six decks just seem to run back and forth and it is very difficult to win more than two hands in a row. There is a game called “streak” for those who wish to bet that they can win multiple hands. Five in a row pays 38-to-1 odds. Vegas wasn’t built by winners and the house usually wins in the end. But along the exciting way, players strive to beat the dealer, win the jackpots and most of all have a good time and enjoy the moments in the scenic mountains and wonderful historic towns.
