Forest fires are just beginning

The only good thing about these reoccurring fires is that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re roasting a huge number of beetles that have been destroying our forests leading to destroyed mountain homes. It is a sad event for all of us living in Colo- By Bob Sweeney rado to see our forests devastated by beetles and a government and leadership doing almost nothing to protect our forestlands. Instead of using bomber planes to put out fires, we should have been spraying our forests with a chemical formula that would have killed the bugs and left the trees standing. We are now going to spend millions to fight fires that will grow in numbers as the forests become more infested with dead, infested timbers.

The lack of interest in protecting our forestlands is almost a criminal offense in land and forestry managementâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;mismanagement! It would seem that some research, could and should, have been ongoing decades ago to stop this beetle invasion that will eventually leave our mountains almost bare of our existing forestlands. A simple lightning strike can now ignite thousands of acres of dead timber to a raging inferno that will destroy far more homes and cost millions to fight in a losing battle with Mother Nature. Just a dreadful situation and our legislature and federal governments just ignore the dangers. Marijuana and marriage vows seem far more important than protecting our precious forestlands. We can worry about global warming from coalfired power plants while we light up the mountains with massive wild fires that destroy wildlife and pollute the skies. As we enjoy our Colorado mountains this July Fourth week, let us vow to be better stewards of all lands in future decades. Let music reign instead of fireworks.

Independence Day Celebration

Ariana struggled with depression and attempted suicide many times throughout her high school years. She has worked hard to find happiness, but smoking eventually became her greatest enemy. “I did not survive depression and suicide attempts so I could die from lung cancer. I had to stop smoking,” she said. Ariana has overcome many difficult life challenges, and she has also quit smoking. Her story is part of a campaign entitled “My Greatest Enemy” being used by the Gilpin County Tobacco Education Program to highlight the harms and addiction of cigarette smoking and tobacco and the stories of those who fight back and win life’s battles. Many fight and survive depression, cancer, drug abuse and much more only to find themselves facing what may be an even greater enemy - tobacco addiction. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that more deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from illegal drug use, alcohol use, HIV, motor vehicle injuries, suicides and murders combined in the United States. In addition, people who smoke double their risk for a stroke and are 15 to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer or die from lung cancer than people who do not smoke. The good news is there are more effective meth-

ods and resources to help people quit than before, and by using proven approaches, people can nearly double their chances of quitting for good. According to National Jewish Health, 1.3 million people across our nation successfully quit smoking every year. “This campaign is about hope and encouraging people to get the support they may need to take on this battle that could save their life,” says Donna Viverette, Tobacco Prevention Initiative coordinator. “In addition to the Colorado QuitLine, which offers free help for people who want to quit, there are new online and community-based resources to support people through the quitting process. We hope these ads remind everyone that quitting tobacco is the best thing they can do for their health and that they don’t have to fight the battle alone.” The data show that tobacco use continues to contribute to the leading causes of death and disability in the region. Going Green

Colorado’s mountain people go green with creativity Colorado’s mountain people have been going green for many years by using their creativity. Recently on a trip along I-70 from Denver to Vail, my husband and I stopped at Georgetown’s hydroelectric station, which is the second oldest operating fully functioning hydroelectric facility in Colorado. These creative Georgetown people have been going green since 1900 by creating hydroelectric power with mountain streams running downhill from the Guanella Pass area. This Georgetown hydroelectric plant, located on the east end of Sixth Street on the former site of the What Cheer Mill, was originally constructed by the United Light and Power Generation Company. In the early 1900s, the plant supplied electricity to Georgetown,

Silver Plume, Idaho Springs, Black Hawk, Central City, and electrified mines in the area. The plant continues to generate electricity and is now owned and operated by Xcel Energy. The water used to drive the water wheels comes from the Georgetown reservoir located approximately a mile up the canyon. The 700-foot vertical fall produces 275 pounds persquare-inch of water pressure on the water wheels. Inside the plant is the Georgetown Energy Museum where visitors can see 100-year-old equipment, generators, and early electrical appliances. It is open daily during the months of June-September from 10 am to 4 pm Monday-Saturdays, and from noon to 4 pm on Sundays. There is no admission charge.

Vail area

In the Vail area, we saw recycled old skis cleverly fashioned into colorful rocking chairs and benches that were placed in front of exclusive Vail shops and local business in nearby mountain towns. While staying at Vail Cascade Resort, I interviewed executive chef Todd Bemis in their classy Atwater on Gore Creek restaurant. Bemis told us of the many green things the restaurant and the hotel are now doing, like using eco-friendly glass mugs instead of Styrofoam cups for coffee and organic tea in guest rooms. When I asked him about buying food locally, he emphasized that their theme is authentic Colorado cuisine, and he tries to buy food locally whenever possible. For example, he reports that in the summer, the restaurant buys Colorado peaches and local artisan cheeses. Farm-to-table food is fresher and tastier, and it helps the environment by saving trans-

portation costs. He pointed out that it’s just not possible however to buy locally fresh asparagus and many greens and vegetables in the mountains in the cold winter season. For example, the restaurant can only get hothouse tomatoes for a few months. John Updike – not that his character Harry ‘Rabbit’ Angstrom was our inspiration for temporarily naming Rabbit. Clearly, we had no inspiration at all; witness the fact that we’re calling a rabbit, “Rabbit.”   My son, who had just finished reading Of Mice in Men shortly before Rabbit arrived, called her Lennie a few times. But if you’ve ever read Of Mice and Men, you know that might not be the most appropriate name either.   Whatever we call her, I’m going to miss Rabbit terribly when she goes. I definitely see the benefits of a writer’s rabbit for those of us who can’t have cats. She doesn’t make me sneeze or break out in hives. She doesn’t purr when I pet her, but she doesn’t hiss either. And maybe most importantly, she shows no interest whatsoever in our canary.

nly Central City would celebrate a madam and all things relating to a house of ill repute. For more than 35 years, the mountain town has dedicated the third Saturday of every June to the town’s last madam. The brass bed races on Main Street, the costume contests, the dance routines, the food, band and music all lift up those Soiled Doves of yore to the delight of the crowds that annually attend because a good time is guaranteed. Beginning at noon on June 15 this year, the Sporting House Girls of Central City wowed the crowds on Main Street with their choreographed dance routines. A parade of all the bed race teams and everyone wearing a Victorian, Sportin’ House, Madam or Dandy Dan costume preceded the Brass Bed Races, run by teams of three: two men and one woman. The stopwatch begins when one male team member touches the nightshirt on the bed to put it on over his cos-

That man then pushes the other man and the woman down Main Street on the bed, not an easy feat – those old wheels don’t go in a straight line and a few spectators had to demonstrate some quick jumps out of the way. After circling the barrel in front of Dostal Alley, the pusher stops the bed and the men exchange the nightshirt. Then the hard part begins; the man who was treated to the ride down has to push the second man and the woman back up Main

Street to the finish line. The winning Bed Race Team this year was Johnny Z’s, which took home the large trophy and bragging rights. Second place was earned by the Famous Bonanza and third place by Golden Mardi Gras. The Best Costume trophy was earned by the “miners” of Famous Bonanza. The Worst Time in Bed award went to the Tommyknockers Brewery team from Idaho Springs for having the slowest time. The total age of the three members of each team is added up and the Oldest Farts in Bed award went to the Bull Durham team for their 116 total years. With only 69 years total, the Central City Opera team took the Maiden Voyage award. Those of us cheering at the finish line were concerned that the young opera company uphillpusher was going to expire before he reached the finish line. Maybe all opera singers aren’t blessed with large lungs? The costume awards were announced at the Miners and Madams Ball on Saturday evening in the VIP Room of the Century Casino. The Wild Bunch presents Old West gunfights beginning at noon and continuing through 4 p.m. until Aug. 17. Their skits are clever, their costumes authentic, and the crowds are growing every week - black powder and gunshots demand attention. The Central City Business Improvement District recognizes the publicity value of these performers and sponsors the group, paying for their gunpowder, brass, primers, grease and caps. The five men in the troupe all own their antique firearms and make their own black powder bullets every week in preparation for the next Saturday’s shows. The process takes hours because every one of the five gunfighters shoots 30 to 40 bullets every Saturday afternoon. Leader Mike Keeler said, “We empty every gun every Saturday.” The men’s guns are all vintage firearms: one is an 1858 Navy model; another, an 1851 Navy model and the others are Colt 45s. Julie James shoots a 12-gauge shotgun in addition to a Colt 45, and Sweet Annie, Anne Lueddes, carries a vintage purse-size derringer. The gunfighters include two “bad guys,” Big Bad Mike Keeler and Cheating Chuck Roberts, “Ranger” Ralph Barnhardt, “Town Drunk” Gary Huffman and “Deputy”

The 3 p.m. show is one of the two new skits, Dominoes, where six of the seven actors, including the two women, lie dead in the street and second-story windows; only Deputy Bill survives the carnage. The last show is called The Shootout. Because of numerous requests, Gilpin History has purchased T-shirts for the Wild Bunch to sell. The tees have the gunslingers pictured on them and are autographed by all the men; they’re available during their shows in Dostal Alley at $10 each. When the men aren’t shooting and raising a ruckus in Central City, they’re lawabiding model citizens working a wide variety of jobs. Julie James has worked as a lifeguard for Gilpin County Recreation since 2008. Anne Lueddes is an accountant for

Gary Huffman is a retired railroader while Chuck Roberts works for a construction company and also owns his own business making boots, men’s leather coats and vintage military uniforms. Ralph Barnhardt is retired; his last position was managing a NAPA Auto Store in Florida. Bill Cavanaugh is a quality assurance inspector for a medical device company, giving the final OK on all the company’s cardiac-related devices. The group wants to extend a public thank you to the business-people of Central City who support them so well, and particularly to Mayor Ron Engels, who has even appeared in a show, and Police Chief Terry Krelle, who is also a strong supporter.

When and why to play the progressive slots

rogressive slot machine jackpots start at respectable levels and rise from there, in proportion to the money played before some solid citizen hits a grand slam. After such a win, values are reset to the base figures and the procedure is repeated. Some progressive jackpots are gigantic. Others merely magnificent. Either way, they’re easy to spot. Look for high dollar values with upward-rolling numbers flashing on electronic meters. The progressive concept is what makes the spectacular prizes feasible. Even a quick succession of successful hits only costs the casino the base value plus money already set aside from that held by the machine. Here are guidelines if you’re con-

sidering progressive play. 1. Decide whether progressive slots are for you. Practically speaking, casinos have the same profit margins on different machines over extended periods. Money and betting considerations You’re an ambitious, serious player. You’re a winner and you want to know how to maximize your profits from the game and your question is: How much money should I bring to the table and play on any one bet for the biggest gains? I’ll answer this question both for the casinos in Colorado (where you have the $100 bet limit) and for most other casinos around the nation and world, where you often bet almost anything (although even the very wealthy often need permission to make bets above a certain size, that size varying per the “comfort zone” of each casino and the player’s track record as either a winner or loser - losers, in other words, tending to get more green lights on the highest bet amounts). Let’s talk about Colorado first. It’s a shame the state’ politicians have yet to raise the bet limit, but there it is and you butt up against it very quickly - a fact that (as I have shown you in earlier columns) actually creates more losers than winners (in spite of the intent of the law), due to the frustration it provides to those who seek higher profits. Ambitious players in Colorado are often tempted to do what many slots players do when confronted with the prospect of measly gains: they want to play the maximum on every hand, thinking that will maximize their gains. So they bring a few thousand to the table and plop $100 in the betting spot round after round thinking they’re maxing out their gains. But they’re wrong. To win the max at blackjack involves many things but one principal is vitally important: you have to vary your bets so you: 1) have a maximum amount down when your methods (such as my Precision Betting Method) and indicators tell you you’re most likely to win in the next round and, 2) have a minimum amount down when the same methods and indicators warn you that you’re most likely to lose in the next round. The Ames family is grateful to have their family archives stored there. North Easton is touched with the talents of some of the most gifted architectural artists of the late 1800s. Henry Hobson Richardson designed not only the library, but also the Oakes Ames Memorial Hall, the Old Colony Railroad Station (home of the Easton Historical Society), the Ames Gate John La Farge stained glass window in Unity Church of North Easton Lodge and the F.L. Ames Gardener’s CotPAGE 20

tage. These five buildings comprise the H.H. Richardson Historic District of North Easton. Working with Richardson on the above were Orlando Whitney Norcross of Norcross Brothers, the first general contractors in the country, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a foremost sculptor of the time, who often embellished Richardson’s buildings. Frederick Law Olmsted, landscape designer of New York Central Park, created public landscape for the town and for private estates. The most recent and controversial project has involved the old shovel factory. Some potential developers just wanted to tear it down. It is an enormous campus with numerous long, narrow stone buildings, each for different stages of building shovel blades and handles, etc.. Once it was all run by waterpower. The final decision was to turn the buildings into housing units. Because of the placement of windows and

doors (the spaces must remain the same for the sake of historic preservation) and the narrowness of the buildings, the configuration of the apartments has been a creative challenge. Most will be offered at market rate, the remainder for affordable housing. A sign-up list is growing and I understand that the Ames name shows up on it. As promised, this story actually does find its way to the West. It involves the main focus of my research, which centers on a windy hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyo., at the 60-foot tall Ames Monument. I will be telling you much more about the monument and why it came to be in coming months. For now, it was the collaboration of these artists from the East bringing their talents West: designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, built by Orlando Whitney Norcross through his superintendent A.L. Sutherland, and decorated by Augusts SaintGaudens. Frederick Law Olmsted visited and pronounced it the monument most suited to it’s environment.

It’s been said that Myers Avenue was the liveliest street in the West. The popular tune, There’ll be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight, was first heard on Myers Avenue in Cripple Creek, the world’s Greatest Gold Camp. And it fit! For Myers Avenue was one of the largest and rowdiest streets of ill repute in all of the mining camps in the West; the site of a legendary Red Light District. Parlor houses were big business in Cripple Creek, as in any mining camp. Businesses on Myers Avenue operated 24 hours a day with freespending miners who were out for a good time. Pearl DeVere and her Old Homestead parlor house filled that need. Pearl arrived in Cripple Creek from Denver in 1893. A woman described as beautiful, and strong in stature, it is a pity no photograph exists of Pearl DeVere. Pearl was one of those ladies the “good” women of Cripple Creek didn’t mention. Children were forbidden to walk near Myers Avenue, where Pearl ran her “gentlemen’s entertainment” establishment. At age 31, Pearl had a head for business, and made a very lucrative living from the beginning. Her ladies were encouraged to wear fine clothing and were paid well enough to afford it. The common women of

Cripple Creek shuddered at these women who dared to shop on Bennett Avenue. Pearl was seen daily, riding her fancy single-seated phaeton, complete with red painted wheels, and led by a beautiful team of black horses. On horseback, she would wear a different elegant dress everyday, riding sidesaddle, her derby hat cocked to one side, as she smiled brightly at people who stared. She was full of fun, and had a kind heart. She generously gave to the charity causes in town, monetarily, for she knew her presence wasn’t welcomed at the various functions. In April 1896, following a horrific fire that devastated most of the town, Pearl rebuilt her house of ill repute in brick. The Old Homestead parlor house soon became known throughout the West. The new parlor house was quite extravagant, at least by Cripple Creek standards. Town gossip swirled at the expense Pearl spent to make her house the finest in Colorado. Lavish decorations from imported European furniture to lace curtains and velvet draperies, adorned nearly every rooms. Large fireplaces as well as coal stoves, heated the house on cold Cripple Creek nights. Crystal gaslights, as well as electric chandeliers, kept the house in good light

during parties for the rich clientele. Running water was a luxury, which improved the cleanliness of the establishment, not to mention the hygiene of the women. Hand-painted French wallpaper, at a cost of $134 a roll, gleamed throughout, and the finest handmade hardwood tables graced the parlor and entertainment rooms. There was a telephone and even an intercom system. The tongues wagged in Cripple Creek; electricity and two bathrooms, when decent family folk had coal lamps and outhouses. Pearl’s new establishment drew a rich clientele, where references were required of the guests. Pearl became legendary, and the Old Homestead House would become a Colorado legend. The oldest brothel museum in the country, it was established in 1958. The Old Homestead House Museum retains the rich Victorian decor of Pearl’s efforts over a century ago. Touring this historical brothel is not only a step back in time, but an intricate look at the life of the “working girls” of a 19th century mining town. Unlike most museums with displayed artifacts in glass cases, the Old Homestead House Museum is just that; a house museum. Stepping into the parlor, where the girls greeted their guests, the room retains the original hand-painted French wallpaper, as well as the original diamond dust mirror, and a nice inclusion of alcohol lamps.

The entertainment room contains an original turn of the century gaming table from the Johnny Nolan Saloon, Cripple Creek’s most popular establishment of its kind. Also on display in the room is a wonderful étagère, the oldest piece in the museum, dating to the early 1700s. A diamondetched mirror hangs over the fireplace. The unique oatmeal wallpaper in this room is also original. Many artifacts in the house museum were gifts to Pearl in an effort to rebuild her “house” following the fire, or gifts to the working girls from admiring patrons. One such gift is the crystal chandelier in the entertainment room, a gift to Lola Livingston, one of the popular girls. In the dining room, a hand-blown glass chandelier hangs from the ceiling, which was a gift to Pearl. A silver tea service is also on display in the dining room, a gift to Hazel Vernon, who became the madam of the house following Pearl’s sad death, and Cripple Creek’s longest reigning madam. Upstairs, a long hallway includes the five rooms once occupied by the working girls. If the paying guest had not made a selection in the lower parlor room, a viewing room was available for further selection (through a window) just to the left of the upper landing. Artifacts in these rooms include beds made of pine, walnut, chestnut, and a spool bed with wooden slats supporting the mattress by ropes attached to the spooled knobs on the frame. include full-length mirrors with tiger wood frames, and hand-painted silk screens. Artifacts of a personal nature include chamber pots covered with delicate crochet, a wooden commode and covered cuspidors for the tobacco-chewing patron. Corset bags used to protect the delicate whalebone of the female garment are on display, as well as a wonderful and rare example of a handcarved walnut corset chair. The room at the end of the hall is known as Pearl’s room, as this is the room where she tragically died on June 5, 1897. The coroner ruled the death as an “accidental overdose of morphine.” Pearl had given a lavish party the previous evening. Upon retiring, still restless, she took a dose of the morphine to sleep. Still dressed in her exquisite $800 Paris-made pink chiffon ball gown, Pearl eventually fell to sleep. Sometime later, one of her girls checked on her. Finding Pearl breathing heavily and unable to wake her, local Dr. Hereford was summoned and did all he could, but the morphine had taken effect. Pearl died at the young age of 36. She was buried in the local cemetery wearing the Paris pink chiffon gown she had died in. Today, the Old Homestead Museum carries on with the spirit of Pearl. In April, after years of fundraising, the museum is now privately owned. PAGE 21

CELEBRATE THE

WITH DELICIOUS RECIPES Firecracker Guacamole 1   Dulcinea PureHeart Mini Seedless Watermelon 8   ripe, fresh California Avocados, peeled, seeded and coarsely mashed ¼ cup minced green onions 2  ripe tomatoes, seeded and diced

4   habanero chiles, stemmed, seeded and minced (or less, to taste) 2 tbsp. lemon juice Salt, to taste Serves: 16

Roll the watermelon to find the flattest side; place that side on bottom. OR, slice a thin slice off of one narrow end of the watermelon so it will stand flat. Slice the top third of the watermelon off. Wrap and set aside. Hollow out the red watermelon from the remaining watermelon section; reserve fruit for another use. A rice paddle works well for this task. Make sure all of the red part of the watermelon is removed. Pat dry with paper towels, then sprinkle with salt. Place upside down on a rimmed tray lined with paper towels and refrigerate overnight.   For the guacamole, gently combine all ingredients in a medium serving bowl. Let sit for at least 10 minutes for the flavors to blend. With paper towels, rub inside of watermelon bowl to remove salt and thoroughly dry. Fill with Firecracker Guacamole, serve and enjoy. Time: 20 minutes plus watermelon chill time (8 hours) Serving suggestion: Serve with fresh veggies or crisp chips. Recipe courtesy of californiaavocado.com

Inside-Out Cheeseburgers 1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 1/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese 1 pound 90%-lean ground beef

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Preheat grill to medium-high or preheat the broiler. Combine Cheddar and Gruyere in a small bowl. Gently mix beef, Worcestershire, paprika and pepper in a large bowl, preferably with your hands, without overworking. Shape into 8 thin, 4-inch-wide patties. Mound 2 tablespoons of the cheese mixture on each of 4 patties, leaving a 1/2-inch border. Cover each with one of the remaining patties. Crimp and seal the edges closed. To grill: Lightly oil the grill rack (oil a folded paper towel, hold it with tongs and rub it over the rack. Do not use cooking spray on a hot grill). Grill the stuffed patties over medium-high heat, about 4 minutes per side for medium-well. (Be sure not to press the burgers as they cook or they’ll split open and the cheese will ooze out.) To broil: Cover a broiler pan with foil and coat with cooking spray. Broil the stuffed patties in the upper third of the oven, about 4 minutes per side for medium-well.
