Enjoy every day, life is good The fireworks have exploded, the freedoms of America enjoyed—and it’s back to work for most of us fortunate enough to have jobs. Colorado is such a great place to live, work and play. No wonder our population is skyrocketing and new folks arrive in this state every day. New apartment complexes are rising on rapidly disappearing open space and more demands are being made on infrastructure, sewer, water, schools, law enforcement and traffic flows. Growth comes with a price of sharing this beloved state and country with others. The inflow of new people down through the past centuries has made America a land of opportunity for all people from foreign shores. This growth has created jobs that people must have to make a freeenterprise system function. Like the rookies on sports teams, the new arrivals have to do some of the harder work to make the American team. New arrivals have provided the muscle to lay the bricks, build the roads, build the railroad lines, do the roofs, farm the fields, pick the fruit, clean the rooms, make the beds and defend our shores in the military. We’re a nation of hardworking men and women who believe in fair play, hard work, kindness to the poor and afflicted, helping neighbors, defending our nation

and families, paying our fair share and serving as volunteers for nonprofits. While the election process points out all of the bad things in America, we need to think more about all of the good things going on in America. There is too much emphasis on system failure, lack of leadership, out-of-balance budgets and fear of the future and terrorism. What about all of the great public servants who do a wonderful job of running our cities and counties? Colorado is a booming state and the Denver metro area is one of the finest places to live in the world. We need to thank our local and state workers and leaders for the great job that they do on a daily basis. I’ve never seen a statue of a critic anywhere in the world, only patriots who have served their country well. As we progress forward, we need to understand that these fears and concerns have been with this nation since the Pilgrims arrived on the shores and faced both friendly and hostile Indians and starvation with dwindling food supplies and harsh winter weather. Remembering a Civil War that split America into two opposing sides in a terrible conflict between the states, two world wars, a Great Depression, dust storms, droughts and the threat of atomic

Trash becomes treasure with recycled eggshells in your garden What are some ways to go green to benefit your garden and also reduce organic household waste? Try recycling eggshells to enrich your soils so you can have a more productive garden. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you love it when trash suddenly becomes a treasure? An eggshell is the exterior covering of an egg. The U.S. food industry estimates 150,000 tons of eggshells are wasted every year. Chicken eggshells, which are the primary type of eggshell waste, contain of 93 to 97 percent calcium carbonate, in addition to calcium, nitrogen and phosphoric acid. These nutrients make eggshells an ideal choice for garden use.

Egg prices have now gone way down from previous months. Instead of trashing the eggshells after enjoying many egg and egg dishes, here are some green tips for recycling eggshells to improve the soil for household plants and gardening activities. Make seedling starters. Poke a hole at the bottom of a large eggshell, then fill with dirt and one or two seeds. Store the eggshell seedlings in an egg carton and place it in a sunny windowsill. Water the seedling as needed. Once the seedlings start to grow, break a bigger hole in the bottom and then plant the seedlings inside their shells in a pot or your garden.

Fertilize your garden soil. Eggshells contain many nutrients, which help make plants healthy. Rinse eggshells. Allow the eggshells to dry or to decrease the decomposition time, dry the eggshells in a low temperature oven. Then grind them using a blender before adding them to the compost or mixing them into the garden soil. The smaller the eggshell pieces, the faster they will break down in the soil. Make rich calcium water. Soak eggshells to extract the calcium into the water and use the (cooled down water) from your boiled eggs to water plants. Improve compost. Gardeners frequently add lime to compost to correct acidity problems in garden soil. Lime is made up of calcium carbonate, which is the main nutrient in eggshells. Rather than purchase lime, recycle eggshells to

the compost. Use crushed eggshells to repel insects instead of harmful insecticides. Add egg shells to the soil in your garden to keep slugs, snails, cutworms, and even cats away. The abrasive, sharp edges of the eggshells keep snails and slugs from crossing the shells to get to the plants. Do not grind the shells, but crush the shells by hand so the shells are in pieces. Or place eggshells in a bowl or large container and grind the eggshells using a pestle, which is a hand-held tool

used for mashing or grinding substances The shells should have sharp, rough edges. Warning: When crushing eggshells with your hand, be careful not to cut your hands. Scatter the crushed eggshells around plants affected by snails or slugs. For best results, place the eggshells in a circular pattern around the plants. Also use crushed eggshells on the bottom of garden containers and pots before adding soil. The eggshells will add calcium to the soil in the containers, provide drainage, and deter cutworms and slugs.

A few more revolutions of the wheels, and the train stopped at the end of the road, at Central City.

Chrysoberyl - the “Cat’s Eye” gemstone

Chrysoberyl is like the eye of a sleek feline predator with the light shining in its eyes, the chrysoberyl (pronounced KRIS-oh-barrel) cat’s eye winks at the astonished observer. That’s why only this gemstone has the right to the fitting name of “cat’s eye”. This gem shows a narrow, bright band of light on a shimmering golden background, which seems to glide magically across the surface when the stone is moved back and forth. In gem terminology this phenomenon is known as ‘chatoyancy’, which comes from the French ‘chat’ (or cat) and ‘oeil’ (for eye). Those chrysoberyls lacking the cat’s eye effect are mostly faceted. Cat’s eyes

are always cut into cabochons (half round gems with a flat bottom), since only tall, rounded shapes allow the line of the eye pupil to be visible. Since ancient times, chysoberyl has been regarded as a gemstone that protects its wearer and keeps disaster at bay. The cat’s eye most often is seen as a particularly effective protective stone and talisman. According to the Hindus, it is said that it would preserve health and guard against poverty (which seems appropriate for these recession times). On account of its golden tones, chrysoberyl is often also associated with wealth. In its most beautiful form as a high-quality cat’s eye it is up among the gemstones of the luxury class. Self-control and discipline are the qualities mainly associated with chrysoberyl in modern gemstone mythology. Chrysoberyls are said to

promote concentration and the ability to learn, and to enable the wearer to think clearly and farsightedly. Thanks to the secret power of the chrysoberyl, negative thoughts are said to be transformed into positive energy. And these positive qualities are said to be even more marked with a chrysoberyl cat’s eye. However, chrysoberyl is also regarded as a gemstone which promotes tolerance and harmony, and it is one of the lucky stones for those born under the sign of Leo. Chrysoberyl occurs in numerous colors, predominately the shades of green and brown. Chrysoberyl cat’s eye, also known as cymophane, is of honey color, a medium yellow with modifying brown. The name ‘chrysoberyl’ comes from the Greek

and means ‘gold-colored beryl’. It is found mostly in the gemstone deposits of Brazil, Sri Lanka or East Africa. The Hope Collection, a collection of gems by the wealthy 19th century British banker, Thomas P. Hope, who also once owned the Hope Diamond, contained an enormous cat’s eye that was carved to represent an altar surmounted by a torch. It was half a sphere in shape and measured about 1-1/2 inches in diameter. British royalty has long favored the gem for engagement rings. The American Museum of Natural History boasts a superb cat’s eye that weighs 48 carats. Another form of chrysoberyl is called Alexandrite and is particularly interesting because of its color

change; emerald green in daylight, red to violet by ordinary artificial light. The more poetic writers have referred to it as “an emerald by day and a ruby by night.” This variety received its name from the fact that it was supposedly discovered on the birthday of Alexander II, Czar of Russia, in 1830. Because of this, and because red and green are the colors of the Russian Imperial Guard, alexandrite has been a particular favorite in that country. Since the gem rarely occurs in large sizes, a 30 to 50 carat specimen of exceptional quality is usually found only in gem collections. The name alexandrite is applicable only when a distinct color change is visible. Many stones are offered as alexandrite, even though they do not have a distinct color change. Alexandrite alternates with pearl and moonstone as the birthstone for the month of June.

The problem is, bugs have to eat too, and that’s where I draw the line. At the very least, bugs cause itching and pain when they bite. At their worse, they spread disease to their hosts which seems like a wicked thing to do to someone who has just given you a good meal. Yes, bugs tick me off. (I’ve been dying to say that.) I’ve found black widow spiders in my garage. I’ve been kept awake by crickets and stung by wasps. I’ve seen wolf spiders the size of full-grown Chihuahuas in my basement. And it turns out the hitchhiker that started this rant had a partner. I found it a few days later in my laundry basket,

and I don’t think it was planning to help with the laundry either. Still I understand bugs do important work. In his book The Diversity of Life, biologist Edward O. Wilson says that if all bugs disappeared, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals would soon follow because of the domino effect on up the food chain. I did not read Mr.
