Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo

kicks up its heels for its 75th The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo has been a summer tradition for three-quarters of a century, blossoming from a rodeo event staged by flamboyant businessman and civic visionary Spencer “Speck” Penrose. Using wealth accumulated from Cripple Creek gold and Utah copper mining, multimillionaire Penrose had built Colorado Springs’ lavish Broadmoor Hotel and blasted the auto road to the top of Pikes Peak. The rodeo was one of dozens of projects, tourist sites and schemes that Penrose and his wife Julie bestowed upon the city. It was Speck’s touch that helped make this rodeo an enduring event of western heritage for residents and tourists alike. Penrose staged the “Will Rogers Rodeo” in July 1937 on polo grounds in the Broadmoor neighborhood. This was not Spencer’s first rodeo, however: it expanded upon a summer Roundup that he had orchestrated on the Broadmoor grounds since 1920, a small rodeo combined with Native American dances and ceremonies. Rodeo, of course, also accentuated other equine sports popular at the Broadmoor such as polo and trail riding. The following summer, in 1938, the Will Rogers Rodeo took place in the newly opened million-dollar Will Rogers Stadium built by Penrose adjacent to the Broadmoor Hotel. Two years later, after Speck’s death, the facility was renamed the Spencer Penrose Stadium. The rodeo was renamed the Pikes Peak or Bust and in 1940 became an annual civic event executed with the help of hordes of volunteers. The stadium eventually was moved to a new location on Lower Gold Camp Road in 1973 to make way for hotel expansion, and it was renamed the Norris-Penrose Event Center. Seventy-five years later, the event still shines on, in part thanks to Penrose’s vivid vision and showmanlike personality. There had been earlier attempts at rodeo in Colorado Springs – colorful but short-lived. The first rodeo-type event was a Wild West show that visited the city in 1908. In 1912, another one-time event took place at Colorado College on the present site of Shove Chapel. Shan Kive (the Ute term for “good times”) was a cross between a rodeo and a carnival with riding and roping events inside a circle of wagons and even included horse racing. In 1922, the Colorado Springs Rodeo debuted north of the Aircraft Mechanics site at 3200 North Nevada Avenue. Organizers ventured to Wyoming to

investigate and replicate the corrals and chutes that made the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo “the Daddy of ‘em All.” The Colorado Springs Rodeo, however, was also fleeting. The event needed a permanent location and consistent promotion. Then, Penrose stepped in to try his hand at rodeo. He produced an event as a tourist booster for Colorado Springs and to perk up the city in the midst of the Great Depression. Rodeo did build upon some of the area’s earliest industries – cattle ranching, stock raising and freight-transport by horse, mule and burro – as well as dude ranching and trail rides that were becoming part of the Pikes Peak scene. Rodeo promotion was the perfect gig for Spencer, a flamboyant showman who favored all kinds of western dress and especially loved western spectacles. The sport also reflected Speck’s affection for all things horse. The city. Numerous organizations and an army of volunteers have perpetuated the rodeo as a beloved annual tradition. The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo is the centerpiece of nearly 20 western heritage events throughout the year. Three weeks prior to the rodeo, the annual Western Street Breakfast kicks off the summer season. This year on June 17, the 55th annual breakfast served up flapjacks and eggs cooked by the Sertoma Club and military personnel from Fort Carson. At Pikes Peak Avenue and Tejon Street from 5:30 to 9 p.m., 10,000 or so folks ate their breakfast seated on hay bales and serenaded by the Flying W Wranglers. Gazing upon the gathering were heroic-sized bronze sculptures of Spencer Penrose in riding breeches and Will Rogers with arms widespread reading the newspaper. The Street Breakfast also included the 67th annual Kiddie Dress Up Review with prizes for best-dressed youngsters. The annual Pikes Peak

Range Riders trail ride departed at 8 a.m. from the Street Breakfast and wended its way up into the Cripple Creek-Victor mining district to pitch tents at its historic campsite in the ghost town of Gillette. As in years past, the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Days starts with the Tuesday evening (July 7) Rodeo Parade at 6:30 p.m. down Tejon Street. In the early days 1,500 or more horses paraded. From July 8 through 11 rodeo performances take place at the Norris-Penrose Event Center at 1045 Lower Gold Camp Road near Bear Creek Regional Park. Get your tickets in advance as the rodeo often sells out. In additional to watching the rough stock, roping and barrel racing events, rodeo-goers can enjoy a plate of BBQ ($13 adults/$6 kids), free gold panning, mechanical bull rides, photo opportunities with longhorns and a wide array of vendors to expand your Western-dress outfit. Kids have fun with pony rides and “wild mutton bustin” try-outs. In the days of yore, folks remember Festus and Doc of the hugely popular TV show “Gunsmoke” crooning cowboy tunes to the packed stands, or cowboy singer Rex Allen (and his

horse Koko) singing western tunes in the center of the arena backed up by guitar, fiddle and doghouse bass. Over the years, other entertainers have included the All American “Cowgirl Chicks” Equestrian Specialty Act, legendary Rodeo Clown Lecile Harris and the Pikes Peak Rangerettes who organized in 1957. Today, country music is provided by regional and national bands performing in the Coors Roadhouse Saloon. The Girls of the West royalty has served as rodeo ambassadors for decades promoting the event far and wide. The precision riding skills of the Pikes Peak Range Rider Pivots captivate the audience at the invitational championship rodeo and a finals championship Shoot Out on Saturday night. The event reflects the military

presence in the city. Since 1946, the rodeo has raised more than $5 million funds for military families. Different branches of the local military are honored at each performance. The rodeo also coincides with the annual ProRodeo Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, to which the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo was inducted in 2008. After the rodeo is over, other opportunities to get western include the El Paso County Fair and Rodeo at Calhan July 19-26, Teller County Fair and Cripple Creek Top of the World Rodeo July 25 – Aug. 2 and the Colorado State Fair at end of August. A visit to the Museum of the American Cowboy/National Rodeo Hall of Fame at the north edge of “The Springs” is also a perfect way to explore the sport that celebrates the West As It Once Was.

Hebrew word “kamea,” a charm or amulet or Latin “cammacus” meaning “engraved gem.” These are said to be root origins of the word cameo, but some experts dispute these meanings. The cameo is generally, but not always, a gem carved from two differently colored layers, especially onyx, the upper layer being used for the figure and the lower layer serving as the background. The cameo is actually a miniature bas-relief sculpture and, unlike the intaglios, will not yield an impression in relief (a method of carving in which the design stands out from the surface). Cameos are carved from agate, jasper, cornelian, turquoise and malachite, including most precious stones. They are also carved from shell and coral. Because of the availability of shells, and the ease in which they could be carved, shells became very popular and eventually the art of cameo carving settled in a small town called Torre Del Greco located on the Bay of Naples. The tiny town of Torre Del Greco, Italy, today is still the center of cameo carving. More than 25 different sea shells plus a large array of coral are used by the master craftsmen. This shell and coral carving center uses a

let-seal of deep religious significance much the same as the symbol of the cross is to the Christians. On the broad oval base of the scarab was engraved the symbols, names, figures and words for the impression. Since words and symbols had deep magical significance in the complicated beliefs of the people, any object so sealed was protected. To unlawfully violate such a sealing would bring eternal damnation on the immortal soul of the culprit. A common inscription was the name of the pharaoh, who was considered a god. A human interest type of inscription is found in the so-called “wish scarabs,” with such inscriptions as, “May thy name be established, mayest thou have a son,” “May Amen protect thee and give thee strength,” and “May Isis give thee a Happy New Year.” The scarabs were drilled with a hole for stringing on a cord or for a swivel in the ring mountings. It is generally customary in the trade today to distinguish between carved and engraved gems by the use of such terms as stone cameo, shell cameo, coral cameo, etc., depending on the materials from which they are fashioned. A stone cameo, for example, refers to one made from any naturally occurring mineral or rock. In addition, the ethical jeweler of gem dealer is careful to apply the term, imitation, to all engraved materials composed of wax, glass, plastic, etc., and the term, synthetic, to all those fashioned from synthetic materials.

The art of carving gemstones originated long before the art of faceting them. In the centuries before Christ, the only polished gems were those that had been polished by being rubbed against pebbles in riverbeds and streams. Excavations have revealed that the first carved gems were made about 4,000 B.C. These were not the popular carved gemstones of today, but the cylinders and seals that were used principally for affixing “signatures” to contracts and for messages and tokens of identity. In Egypt and Crete almost the same designs were used. The bee was the sign of royalty and the hands were the sign of the worker. The story of civilization is told in their carved and engraved gems and in their pottery. But the gems endured while most of the pottery has been broken or entirely destroyed. These cylinders and seals are to be found today in private collections or in the museums of the world. It is the cameo, intaglio and scarab that defines the carved and engraved gemstones. The meaning of cameo and intaglio are defined as carved gems with raised or incised engravings, respectively. Cameo - Cameo comes from the

chipping and will not peal, crack, fade or discolor with age. Intaglio - The intaglio is an engraving of incised work on gemstone, glass, ceramics, or similar material in which the design is sunk beneath the surface, the opposite of a cameo. It is the most ancient form of gem engraving. The earliest known Babylonian cylindrical intaglio seals date from 4,000 B.C. Although the intaglio was developed first and has had, through the centuries, more years of popularity than the cameo, the cameo is generally favored today over the intaglio. The intaglio, using harder stones, makes an ideal ring stone for a man. For the most part, ancient gems were used for seals, whose sunken intaglio engravings gave a beautiful relief impression in wax. Scarab - The most well known ancient seal is the Egyptian scarab. The scarab is a carved representation of a common beetle of the genus Atenchus. So exact were most of the carvings that biologists clearly identified the four species venerated by the Egyptian carvers, since living beetles were their models. Originating in Egypt about 2,000 B.C., it was a popular inscribed amu-

method thousands of years old. Steel engraver tools with handles, fitting the hand, are used in timeless tradition of master craftmanship. The master carver will select the shell to be used, outline the number of cameos to be obtained from that shell, and then supervise the entire carving process. With these incredible sharp precision tools, the most intricate details can be made. The other great carving center of the world is Idar-Oberstein, Germany. This is a city that is just as famous for their gemstone and agate carvings as Torre Del Greco is for their shell carvings. The types of carvings used in the settings are ultrasonically carved. This type of carving seems to be more difficult because of the hardness of gemstones and agates. The cameos are created from high quality white agate found only in that region. The agate is first dyed black, red, green or blue. A computer, using a template from the original hand-carved work of art, ultrasonically carves each piece. The color is then chemically drawn back out of the face of the stone, thus leaving the face in its original white condition. The finished piece is very resistant to
