Let the games begin Life is a game of inches and even seconds. Watching the Olympics, it is such an inspiration to see young men and women who have trained so hard since childhood to participate in these world games. Success comes by inches and seconds that can be life changing for athletes’ careers. Gold medals mean TV endorsements, a $25,000 check from the IOC and the pressure from family, fans, and government officials in countries like China that sponsor these athletes from childhood to compete for national pride. It appears that free enterprise and our Olympic organization must be doing many things right with headquarters right here in Colorado Springs. The women’s gymnastic team has won gold again for the second year. What wonderful girls, and they just swept the completion, winning by a huge margin. Michael Phelps is continuing his historic and record-breaking career as the oldest swimmer in the competition. He is such a powerful swimmer and it will be interesting to see if this is his last Olympic games. With the astronomical cost of hosting the games, there is a discussion about having a permanent site for them. The world could bid on the location, and no doubt the United States would be a

What most of South America lacks is stable governments, progress and economic stability for the people. We have to be thankful that here in America we have had a stable government for centuries and that our twoparty political system, even with the squabbling and ongoing drama, has maintained the best country in which to live, work and play. Gamblers know about timing, winning by the odds, competition, stress and how winning and losing can depend on a roll of the dice or a cut of the cards. Maybe we should have Texas hold ‘em as an Olympic sport in which players compete to win using brains rather than brawn. Chess could also be added to the mix of games. Golf begins as an Olympic sport this year for the first time, and that is certainly a game of inches. Life has become so competitive these days. A Tailing Tale
Memories and restoration of a 1906 Elmore
Awhile back, I minutes, actual had the pleasure running time, in of spending a few the 30 horsepower hours with Donald By Maggie Elmore, coming Vaughn of Gold- Magoffin by way of Golden, en, and hearing over the old stage his beautiful story road via Guy Hill, about a woman, an and then down automobile, and his Dory Hill through deep respect and afBlack Hawk. fection for both. She fondly recalled one such occasion in 1927 when they borrowed the Elmore and then drove it to Denver to take part in the parade and festivities of the Elk’s National Convention. She said as they proceeded down 16th Street, as a unit of the parade, a man by the name of George Williams leaped from the curbing and onto and new leather upholstery on the the Elmore saying, “Where did seat to replace the original, which you get this car?” He stayed with had deteriorated over the years. them the remainder of the day and Otherwise, they were able to retain reminisced about how in 1912, ac- most of the original parts. istence. Through Donald Vaughn’s research, he has learned it may be even less than that, because most of the Elmores were sedans while the McFarlane car is a two-passenger roadster. Throughout the years that Luella and Joseph owned the Elmore, they often dressed in period costume and drove the car through the streets of Central City and Black Hawk. Many opening days of opera season included the arrival of Luella and Joe in their costumes, accompanied by as many family and friends as could sit or stand on the Elmore. She said the Elmore was always a “fun” car, and they often carried as many as 11 passengers from Central City to Idaho Springs, oblivious to the fact it is but a oneseat roadster. After Joseph’s death in 1966, the Elmore was put into storage, where it remained until 1991 when Donald Vaughn was hired to do the work on Luella’s home.
During the hours Don spent with Luella, it was obvious to him how important it was to her to one day get the Elmore running again. And so, he set out to do just that. The day the car sputtered and roared to life, Don drove Luella around her neighborhood and then returned to her house for a celebration. Luella had a number of photos taken to commemorate that day and she wrote the date on the back of the
pictures. Don said, “It was a very important date to her, because the car had been a highlight in her life, and when she saw the car running again, she could not stop smiling. There were friends and neighbors at the party who shared the car warming experience and watched her glow in her memories of her life with her husband and the car that had been such a binding pleasure in those years.” Don recalls also that, “She introduced me to the Central City Opera and sparked my interest in the richest square mile on earth.” Several years later, Luella gave the car to Donald. She asked him to care for it, preserve it and always remember that it was more than just an automobile. It was a piece of history and the source of much joy to a great many people for many, many years. Donald has done more than just take care of the Elmore. Owner of Able Piering, and a man who loves to dance and enjoy life, Donald has dedicated himself to restoration and enshrinement of the McFarlane Elmore, as well as retaining many historical records of Luella and Joseph Thomas. He recently completed construction of a new home in Golden where he built a second garage for the specific purpose of housing the automobile. He commissioned the building of a model of the car, which he had encased in a glass box. He has many manila file folders filled with research on the car and its manufacture. With the assistance of Rick Holdaway, a mechanic who specializes in working on vintage automobiles, Donald has brought the Elmore back to its original magnificence and it runs like a top. In addition to once again replacing the fabric top and leather seat, as previously done by the Luella and Joseph, Donald stripped the paint from the solid maple wheel spokes, and lacquered and polished them to a beautiful finish.
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 24 Years
At the end of our meeting, Donald escorted me to the garage where he proudly revealed his pride and joy. The running boards were encased in bubble wrap, but the rest of the vehicle sparkled and shined like a new penny. He took time to show me how the old headlights worked from a canister on the side of the car, and you had to light each headlight like a candle. In the box on the back of the car, Donald has designed electronic boxes and switches so various features are highlighted when it is on display. It is truly a precious piece of history any museum would be proud to display.

A reservoir in the great American desert
I
n 2008 my first research adventure was to look for the Neponset ranch headquartered in Evanston, Wyoming from 1883 to 1918. It was owned by my great grandfather George F. Chapman and his partners, and it was much loved by my grandmother B e t h C h a p man. In Beth’s photo albums she © Anna Lee Ames Frohlich always referred to the “ranch in Wyoming.” I knew from her stories that there was a reservoir called “Neponset” on the ranch, so I set out looking for a ranch with a good sized reservoir in the vicinity of Evanston. I was having no luck at all looking at old or new maps. Finally, I called government offices in Evanston. Nobody knew what I was speaking of, but each person that I talked to kindly passed me on to someone else who might be able to help. Eventually, I hit the jackpot when I was introduced to Denice Wheeler, an historian and writer, who had actually been the federal chairman under President Clinton of the Bear River Commission. She knew exactly where the ranch and the reservoir were and that the reservoir was not in Wyoming. It was in Utah! On August 13, 1886, when George Chapman and his partners acquired the right to tap water from the Bear River and to carry it across the border to Neponset Ranch in Utah, that right was granted in perpetuity. It is still being used today, and keeps the ranch, now “Deseret,” going. In 1899 the directors of the Neponset Ranch took out a first mortgage for $60,000 in 20-year, 6 percent, Gold bonds. “All the water rights and canals belonging to the company are included within the mortgage, and are given in security for the bonds herein offered. … The objects of the corporation are the development and improvement of its irrigable lands (suitable for irrigating, but not yet irrigated), the purchase, construction, and control of irrigating canals and water

rights, the raising of livestock, and the operating of markets and stores. … All the lands of the company are located in the celebrated Bear River Valley.” The funds acquired from the bonds were probably used in numerous ways, including the completion of the Neponset Reservoir in 1901. Why “Neponset?” George Chapman and his brothers had grown up in a house on the banks of a tributary of the Neponset River where it ran
through the town of Canton, Massachusetts. They were very familiar with, and fond of the Neponset River watershed. When they moved to the West they brought along the name for sentimental reasons. The reservoir was built under rudimentary conditions as had been the canal. They did not have fancy equipment. On the ranch today is some of the old equipment like scrappers and a heavy roller. Also found on the ranch were the

Waterfall on the Neponset Canal star hand drills that would be hammered into stone to split it. Since George Chapman had just married Alice Ames, they no doubt did a lot of the work with Ames shovels. Since George’s father Oliver Chapman had been a key player in the development of the steam shovel, it would have made sense if they had had one. It looked for a short time as if maybe they did. There is a story about an old steam shovel being buried on the ranch, but a partial picture of it taken in the 1980’s shows, according to heavy equipment expert Keith Haddock, that it dated to about 1920. This comes from Bill Hopkin who managed the ranch for a number of years after it had become Deseret Land and Livestock. I recall my Grandfather Stuart, who grew up in Woodruff and lived here his entire life, talking about how the locals would hurry to get their hay put up in the summer so they could take their teams of horses and work for Chapman’s building the canal and Neponset Reservoir.
THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years
I’m sure that project was a real financial boost locally. The source of the Bear River is high in the Uinta peaks in the Rocky Mountains. It eventually flows northward through the town of Evanston in the southwest corner of Wyoming before it is tapped by the Chapman Canal just to the northwest of Evanston. When the Chapman Canal crosses the border into Utah and onto what was the Neponset Ranch it becomes the Neponset Canal. The water flow then falls toward the Neponset Reservoir. On the way there the strong flow of the water has carved out a canyon through the sedimentary rock. After leaving the reservoir, the water enters the drainage of Salaratus Creek and the waste water eventually finds its way back to the Bear River. Just as the reservoir is fed by other sources as well as the canal, it sends out water in different directions and benefits other ranchers. (Thanks to Denice Wheeler, Bill Hopkin, Keith Haddock, and Craig Kennedy for the reservoir map).

That means, where we live, the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence and I sincerely wish my neighbors could say the same thing. Why water when we’ll just have to mow more often? Or rather my husband will have to mow more often. I rake, pull weeds and water now and then, but I do not mow. That’s because part of our lawn is on a very steep hill and I’m not as tough as I look. I’d be risking my life mowing the hill. I let my husband risk his instead. Neglecting to water is one small kindness I can show him. Plus, I’m hoping he’ll water if I don’t. After a summer of plucking weeds, dragging hoses, and watching my husband mow, I’m rewarded with a ton of cottonwood leaves and pine nee-
dles to rake in the fall. Both are deadly to grass. It’s reminds me of a Liam Neeson movie. “Rake or the lawn dies.” Unfortunately, there are no truly dedicated rakers in our house either. Our lawn doesn’t stand a chance, between the leaves and the pine needles— and us. Today as I was dragging hoses across my lawn, I stopped and looked up at the hills behind my house. No one waters, rakes or mows them, but they’re
beautiful. That’s when it hit me. Crabgrass and dandelions are not the problem. Cottonwood leaves and pine needles are not the problem. The lawn is the problem. That and a shortage of dedicated waterers and rakers.
