Save water on your summer lawn and garden Abundant rains in Colorado have made lawns greener, flowers more beautiful, and gardens more productive this spring and early summer. We usually don’t get a second crop of spring rhubarb, but thanks to lots of rain this year we reaped a second harvest. Now that the hot and drier Colorado summer is here, we need to see our lawns and gardens as important parts of local and global ecosystems that have rippling sustainable effects far beyond our back fence. Regular watering is essential for summer bedding, vegetables, pots and hanging baskets as well as newly-planted lawns, trees, shrubs and plants. However, we should learn how to make the best use of water so that we don’t waste it. Water is a precious resource, which is critical to people, food, animals, plants and everything we love about the good life in Colorado. Here are some green tips from horticulture experts to reduce water waste while maintaining healthy lawns, flowers and gardens this summer and early fall.

Watering tips

Always water your plants in the cool of the evening or very early in the morning, rather than during the day when most of the water would evaporate before getting to the plant roots. Don’t water when the wind is blowing strongly. Apply water to the base of plants where it can soak down to the roots. In hot weather, give each plant a good soak at two or three day intervals, rather than a quick sprinkle every day. Help channel water to the roots of thirsty plants, like tomatoes, by burying a flowerpot alongside it. This can be filled with water where it will soak down

August 18 - 31, 2015

into the soil. Install micro-drip irrigation systems to deliver water directly to where the plants can use it. Apply slowly to let water gradually soak into the roots rather than running off or evaporating. This will save you time and reduce the amount of water that’s wasted. Store as much rainfall as you by collecting from the roof of your house, garage, shed and greenhouse. This water will be warmer and thus cause less of a shock to plant roots. Use waste water from washing fresh fruits and vegetables and as well as water from sinks, baths and showers. One year during a summer of water restrictions, we used the wastewater from our washing machine for watering. Never use water that contains bleach or powerful household cleaning products, which could damage plants. Add water-retaining granules to the compost when planting bedding in pots, hanging baskets and other containers. The roots of the plants grow around the saturated granules to draw moisture, as they need it. Grow drought-tolerant flowers, plants and shrubs that can survive without much watering in summer. Choose large pots for your plants, as they won’t dry out as quickly as small ones. Group pots together to make watering easier. Plant flowers and shrubs which are suited to our climate and locality. Strategically place them in optimal positions to minimize the need for water. If you are starting a new lawn, choose species that thrive in drier weather. If you have a sprinkler system, check for leaks, broken or clogged heads. Adjust spray patterns to water plants but not sidewalks or driveways.

Sheds and Shacks, Cabins and Cottages Colorado’s first tiny houses

The tiny house movement that has captured everyone’s attention is actually a revival of a popular necessity from generations back. It’s fun to remember that the earliest Coloradans lived in very small houses too. When the prospectors arrived during the1859 Pikes Peak or Bust gold rush, some brought their own dwelling place with them – the wagon they had traveled in across the plains. They either camped in the wagon indefinitely or it took apart and assembled a one-room cabin. Due to scarcity of wood and lack of sawmill in frontier settlements like Denver City and Aurora, cabins were built of tree trunks dragged by mules or toted by wagon 20 miles away from the forested foothills. The newcomers encountered Arapaho, Cheyenne and Utes who camped in very small dwellings - tipis made of buffalo hide and lodge pole pines. Soon sawmills devoured Douglas fir, blue spruce and pine at Parker, Evergreen, Conifer, Pine, Larkspur, Black Forest and other woodsy locales, producing lumber and shingles freighted by wagon to young towns and cities. A decade later, railroads brought lumber to Colorado from the massive forest stands in the Great Lakes region. Single-room houses remained the norm for many folks, however. During many mining rushes, dwellings were flung up by newcomers using whatever wood they could find. Slab-andcanvas cabins were home sweet home to many, even through frigid mountain winters. Out on the prairie and plains, starting in the 1860s, 160-acre homesteads transferred land ownership from the U.S. government to individuals who “proved up” - lived on their acreage for the five years as required. A claim shack or shanty as small as 12feet by 14-feet went up and sheltered the hopeful homesteader. Rarely did homesteads have woods or trees, so homesteaders built claim shacks from lumber hauled from town by mule and wagon. Some resorted to constructing earth houses –grass-roofed soddies and underground dugouts. Small solid houses also were needed in the mining districts expanding in the mountains and coalfields. Miners’ families squeezed in small (20’x20’) homes, just glad to have four walls to

call their own. In “company towns,” workers rented houses from their employer; the small portable houses often were moved to new locations after the resource deposits became exhausted. In Colorado’s gold and silver mining districts, labor unions secured a living wage of $3 a day, so miners could purchase their own homes. Many were nicely expanded and well appointed, even architect-designed such as those in Victor rendered by Charles McBird. Similar workers’ houses went up on the west side of Colorado Springs, a little cheaper and with less decoration, homes for the lower-paid workforce at the railroads and the ore mills and smelters. In the 2300s of West Platte Avenue stands a row of tall hippedroof cottages – each with its front porch and rear addition. Similar little houses line up south of Sheridan and 38th in Denver; these were built for workers at the enormous power station that stood nearby, electrifying the Denver-to-Leyden Interurban rail line. In Colorado Springs, the Chicago Portable Housing Company sold homes assembled onsite for the price range of the lowest wage earners – clerks, seamstresses, laborers. Chicago House kit homes were sold at 504 West Huerfano, business that operated 1899-1905 by George N. White. A tiny tourist cottage is tucked away at 2822 W. Colorado, 540 square feet in size. In towns and mid-sized cities, alley houses popped as dwelling places for newlyweds, elderly kin and impoverished relatives. Located at the back of the property, often amongst a chicken coop, coal shed, stable and/or auto garages, these pocket-sized houses also yielded family income when rented to seasonal visitors, invalids or transient workers. On the heels of the miners and prospectors came the health seekers. Treating tuberculosis was for a while the strongest industry of cities like Colorado Springs. Local boarding houses overflowed, and cottages and tents sprung up at the edges of Colorado Springs and west of Denver, so many that Edgewater passed an ordinance banning tent dwellings for TB patients. In Colorado Springs, Dr. William A. Shepherd set up 16 tent cottages in Cheyenne Canyon in 1908. His Tent

This local company did a brisk business in selling and assembling small houses in Colorado Springs west side neighborhoods.

During Colorado’s first decade, it was a luxury to have a house in milled lumber. Local availability meant even stylish houses would be small in size. Photos courtesy of the Denver Public Library - Western History Collection Cottage Sanatorium at 105 W. Cheyenne Road was touted as “a perfect homes for the tubercular… each cottage with three rooms: a front room for sitting room, a bedroom and a kitchen. There are electric lights in every room and water in the kitchen. Part of them have toilets.” Crestone Heights opened in 1926 run by the Seventh Day Adventists, it consisted of a main house and 10 cottages. TB huts also became commonplace as economical shelters for patients at several Colorado Springs sanatoria. The six-faced, steep-sided conical roof became almost a local icon. You can see one at the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum, exhibited as a remnant of the city’s health-industry heritage. By the 1910s, cabins sided in log slabs – with or without bark – became extremely popularity. During the 1920s, scores of such rustic cabin subdivisions popped up at places like Nederland, Eldora, Sphinx Park, the foothills west of Denver and Ute Pass resort towns west of Colorado Springs. In the 1930s, hard times shrank the size of homes. Throughout the Great Depression, many families

Prospectors, miners and gold seekers lived in crude log cabins built of available hand-cut timber. squeezed into a cramped abode, just thankful for their own four walls. During World War II, scarce resources limited new home construction. After the war, a population boom created a drastic housing shortage. Some families lived in converted chicken coops and garages in Lakewood, Arvada and Aurora. The last spike in demand for tiny houses probably was the A-frame craze of the 1960s-1970s. The triangular dwelling was a perfect solution for

economical shelter and within reach of the home carpenter-craftsman. As we know, the 1950s and ‘60s brought large-sized houses in the mushrooming suburbs. But a half-century later, things have come full circle with the spiked demand for dwelling smaller than 400 square feet, pushed by economic practicality and a desire for simplicity. As evidence: the Mining History Museum north of Colorado Springs last week hosted the country’s largest Tiny House show.

Central City Into Round Three with blinds at 75/150 I entered a pot with A – J suited just calling the blinds as I wasn’t in entirely a good position. A flop of Q, J, 4 had my opponent betting $600, which only I call to see a nothing turn – check, check. The river is a four to which my opponent makes a $2,500 wager. I could not see him holding a four and putting him on something like K – 10 or 10 – 9, so I called. K – 10 is exactly what he had and another good read places his chips in my stack. In the next round I find myself again with A – J suited and raise the pot to $600 getting four callers. The flop comes Q, 3, 4 so another bet culls the field down to two. A King on the turn [check – check] and a 9 on the river [ditto] give no help and my opponent wins having flopped two pair, threes and fours. Mental note about that guy; I’ve seen him play any two cards as long as they were connecters. I’ll use that against him later on. After four 30-minute rounds

There was a bet and raise in front of me so I felt a call was in order until I determined the fabric of the flop. Q, J, 8 rainbow did not seem to hit anyone so after a bet and call; I raised about four times the original bet. Two quick folds and my first pot was shoved my way. I didn’t have much to play after that until well into the second round when I again found myself holding KK with which I then raised the pot getting one caller. A nothing flop again leads me to believe my hand is good so I bet 600 and my opponent calls. An Ace on the turn saw quick checks from us both; the river being a Queen. He deliberates a little too long [in my opinion] then bets $1,500. My call revealed his Q-J and my cowboys rope in another pot. I credit a good read by me on his hand possibilities to win the pot.

fter a 10-month absence from poker due to a family issue, I found the time and place to jump back into the poker tournament world. Couldn’t make it to the WSOP this year but over the Fourth of July weekend I found myself in San Diego at the Ocean’s Eleven Casino. I bought in to their holiday tournament for two C-notes and the entry fee. Four years ago – the last time I played this – I took third place for $7,500. I planned to equal or exceed that this year. One nice thing, this was on the 4th of July and since San Diego is heavily a military town – both active duty and retirees – just prior to the tournament start, the floorman asked everyone to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone did. In the first round I looked down to find two red Kings.

was raised by both opponents. A quick fold and I was out. A worse one was when holding Qd – Jd and the flop revealed Kd, Qx, 5d giving me middle pair and a diamond draw. I pressed the draw too far and lost to – guess what? – Pocket Kings! The tournament began with 257 players and they paid the top 25. For several rounds now I had been card-dead slowly blinding off my chips. Down to five tables we can begin to smell the money when I find myself holding Q – Q. I make a substantial bet getting reraised from one opponent. I then go all-in to which he calls, showing A – J suited. Okay I have him beat unless … an ace shows up on the flop and another on the turn. End of the tournament for me. I felt I played well and was merely beaten on the end by the turn of an unfriendly card. I thought I had a good tight-aggressive presence at the tables and won a number of smaller pots using that in the minds of my opponents. Good reads and good play – a nice return to tournament poker. Now, all I have to do in the next one is make it into the money. Simple, right?

the game broke for lunch provided by the casino; we all trooped outside to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs or brats, ribs and wings with all the fixin’s and trimmings. That’s one good thing about this casino, when they put on a feed, if you go away hungry it’s your own fault. At 200-400 blinds my next playable hand was J – 10 suited in late position. I flopped a Jack and Diamond draw; runnerrunner diamonds saw my flush beat an A – J. At the next blind level of 400 – 800 I found myself yet again looking down at KK; sheesh, it’s been the tournament of Kings for me. An opponent makes the wager of $3,000 which I call, seeing a flop of Q, 9, 3 rainbow. I made an $8,000 bet to which she shoved all-in. I called and when her A – Q got no more help I doubled through and was healthy in chips. Now, lest you – my good reader – think all this is going along righteously, I will admit making a mistake or two during this day. The first was with A – 9 suited I raised three times the blind and was called by two. A flop of Kh, 8h, 4h comes and when I made a smaller bet to see where I was I
