Opera season brings song and cheer to mountains I see that the garage is almost complete at the Monarch Casino Resort Spa and photos of the new exterior of the casino that greets motorists coming up the canyon road. The new building exterior will have polished granite and rough limestone with new copper-finish windows and matching roof over the gigantic structure. As the garage is completed, the old garage is to be dismantled and a new 500-plus high-rise hotel will greet visitors to Black Hawk. The Isle of Capri and Monarch stand like goal posts for visitors entering these two great cities that can be reached by the new Casino Parkway, arriving at Central City or up the canyon. I personally like to use both routes, depending upon my mission of work or play and where I select to have an excellent sandwich, buffet or a primerib lunch, like Johnny Z’s player’s card prime-rib luncheon special for $7.77. Had one last week while meeting a new friend Joe Marr. Joe advertises his construction and remodeling business in the pages of of Colorado oldest weekly newspaper, the local Weekly Register-Call. Laughingly, I related to him that I saw his ad in the local newspaper. We like to see results from newspaper advertising. Few people ever say where they saw the ads, but they do work for goods, services,
places to eat, sleep and gambling. A reminder to our thousands of readers: Do us a favor and let the casino folks know that you do read this paper by the thousands and enjoy the historic articles, upcoming events and tips and hints on poker, video and blackjack gaming. We’re coming up on 25 years of gaming and publishing this newspaper— quite an accomplishment for us and the three gaming communities. We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs, winnings and losings, snowstorms, road closures, highway construction, water and sewer issues, but through it all, gambling and related services of food, rooms and entertainment have never been better. The success is a tribute to the loyal and hard-working casino employees at all levels who strive to make sure that all customers are treated warmly, fairly, honestly with great games of gaming, and a safe, warm environment. I think the best is still to come with steady growth and the discovery of these great towns by our state’s growing population. The future could see the remodel and re-opening of the famed Belvidere Theatre with agreements ongoing between Gilpin County commissioners and Central City. Bottom line: The old building in almost-downtown Central City could blossom once again and attract many

THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years

Going Green
Bug off—the green way This seems to be a buggy year. I have noticed more insects wanting to find homes in our house and yard. I want to keep bugs away, but I don’t want to harm the environment with toxic, harmful pesticides. Luckily modern green technology coupled with oldtime remedies can help solve this problem. Recently I discovered professional strength glue non-toxic traps at Wal-Mart. These modern glue traps represent the latest in anti-insect technology. The traps capture insects crawling around anywhere in the house. I have always had problems with tiny ants crawling up from the concrete foundation onto my kitchen floor in the summer. These traps stop the train of ants invading much better
household ingredients near areas when ants seem most active. Ants will not cross over cayenne pepper, citrus oil (soaked into a piece of string), lemon juice, cinnamon, cucumber peels or slices, or coffee grounds. Dry, crushed mint leaves, bags of mint tea, bay leaves or cloves also work as ant deterrents. Ants on the deck? Slip a few cut garlic cloves between the cracks.
than the old square ant traps. They also are great way to trap spiders before they build their webs. If you have household pets, however, you should not use these. An easy way to get insects to bug off is to add three to five drops of an essential oil like tea tree, peppermint, or lemon to a quart of water when you clean your floors. These natural oils are harmless to people and pets, but they create an undesirable scent for insects and spiders. Also keep a spray bottle filled with soapy water to squirt at pesky insects. Below are some other simple green home remedies.
Spiders
Natural spider repellants are easy to make that will help your home stay spider free. Then you won’t have to worry about killing them. One of the easiest and most effective ways to eradicate spiders is to make a spider spray to use on the outside of windows and doors and also along fences and mailboxes. Mix and pour the following ingredients in a spray bottle: one cup vinegar, one cup black pepper, one teaspoon tea tree, peppermint, or lemon oil and one teaspoon liquid soap. Mix well to bug off the spiders.
Ants
Stop ants where they enter your house. Set out harmless
Cockroaches
If roaches are a problem in your home or apartment, vacuum well and wash the area with a strong liquid detergent. Dispose of vacuum cleaner bags in a sealed container. Catnip is a natural repellent to cockroaches, and it is non-toxic to humans and pets. Small sachets of catnip can be left in areas of cockroach activity. Catnip can also be simmered in a small amount of water to make a “catnip tea” which can be sprayed around baseboards and behind counters. Warning: This natural repellent should only be used in homes without cats.
Flies
Flies are not as pesky in Colorado as in some other states, but they do come uninvited to backyard picnics. I remember when pest strips were introduced many years ago and later taken off the market because of their toxicity. We took a tour of the Rocky Mountain Arse-
nal, a former World War II chemical munitions facility, which now has been reclaimed from toxic to a “green” national wildlife refuge. Our guide explained as weaponry production declined at war’s end, a portion of the arsenal’s idle facilities was leased to Shell Chemical Company, and they manufactured Shell’s toxic no pest strip there. Now you can make your own non-toxic flypaper with this simple recipe: Mix 1/4 cup syrup, one tablespoon granulated sugar and one tablespoon brown sugar in a small bowl. Cut strips of heavy brown paper, poke a small hole at the top of each strip and thread a string for it for a hanger. Soak the strips in this mixture, and hang to dry overnight. To discourage flies, place small cheesecloth packets of crushed mint around your home or patio. Also wrap bay leaves, cloves and eucalyptus in cheesecloth and hang by open windows or doors and on the patio.

The woman from the cabin near Nevadaville gave him cuttings of her yellow roses, which he planted all around his new home. The Harrison yellow shrub rose, still today growing on the hillsides around Central City, is an 1830 cross between two European roses. This rose, which puts all its energy into a single flush of flowers, was brought to Colorado during the gold rush days of the 1860s. The miners planted the Harrison rose throughout the hills of Central City and it is the only rose which blooms at that elevation of 8,500 feet. The yellow rose puts on a spectacular show each June as the bright yellow flowers cascade from long, arching canes amid the

Gemstone & Minerals
Tanzanite, becoming more rare
Tanzanite is the blue/ violet variety of the mineral zoisite. It was discovered in the Mererani Hills of Manyara Region in Northern Tanzania in 1967, near the city of Arusha and Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzania is a country in East Africa. This country’s eastern border is formed by the Indian Ocean. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, is in Northeastern Tanzania. The name Tanzania is derived from two states, Tanganyika and Zanzibar that were united in 1964. The tiny country of Tanzania is known for a special gem called Tanzanite which has become one of the world’s most coveted gemstones. Found in one remote place on earth (in Tanzania’s Merelani Hills, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro), the precious stone is 1000 times rarer than diamonds. It is rare because once this last purple gem is mined from Tanzania, that’s it, no more tanzanite.
The actual discovery of tanzanite remains something of a mystery. The mineral is believed to be born about 500 million years ago as the eruption of Mount Kilimanjaro created a unique set of conditions deep within the earth that led to formation of tanzanite crystals. High heat and pressure in the presence of a rare chemical, vanadium, allowed for this fascinating stone to form. According to some sources, tanzanite was first discovered in 1967 when an enormous grass fire swept the land below Kilimanjaro. As tanzanite is a brownish color in its rough state, the crystals lying on the surface were never noticed. After the grass fire had burned the land and heated the stones, they turned a bright, glittering violet-blue. A magical carpet of tiny gemstones glittering in the
sunlight attracted the attention of some Maasai tribesmen. They were mesmerized by the stones and picked them up becoming the first humans to ever hold tanzanite in their hands. Tanzanite is the blue-purple variety of the mineral zoisite. Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong ability of showing three different colors in the three different directions when viewed under alternating lighting conditions. The colors appear alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on the crystal’s orientation. After heat treatment, only two hues, purple and blue, are apparent when viewed under incandescent light. The blues appear more evident when subjected to fluorescent light and the violet hues can be seen readily when viewed under incandescent light. Tanzanite in its rough state
is usually a reddish-brown color. It requires heat treatment in an oven to bring out the blue-violet of the stone. The gemstone was named by Tiffany’s after Tanzania, the country in which it was discovered. Because of relatively softness, tanzanite is most commonly set in necklaces and earrings. From 1967 to 1972, an estimated two million carats of tanzanite were mined in Tanzania before the mines were nationalized by the government. The world’s largest faceted tanzanite is 737.81 carats. One of the most famous large tanzanite gems (242 carats) is called the Queen of Kilimanjaro. It is set in a tiara and accented with 803 brilliant garnets and 913 diamonds. The piece is part of the private collection of Michael Scott, the first CEO of Apple Computers. In 2005, the largest-ever tanzanite crystal was found in one of the mines. It weighs 16,839 carats.
A related story from a Staurer catalog goes as follows: Two years after the discovery of tanzanite in 1967, a Maasai tribesman knocked on the door of a gem cutter’s office in Nairobi. The Maasai had brought along an enormous chunk of tanzanite that he was looking to sell. His asking price was $50. But the gem cutter was suspicious and assumed that a stone so large could only be glass. The cutter told the tribesman, “No thanks,” and sent him on his way. Big mistake! It turns out that the gem was genuine and could have produced a dazzling stone that would have dwarfed the world’s largest cut tanzanite at that time. Based on common pricing, that “chunk” could have been worth close to $3,000,000. The Tanzanian gem cutter missed his chance to hit the jeweler’s “jackpot”... and make history. (Author’s note: Tanzanite was added to the birthstones for December in 2002.)

He had some great insight on the state’s poker scene and provided some impactful impact on my game - very helpful, friendly, and fun. 2) Becoming part of a “Poker Gang.” A group of folks who played tournaments the same nights, would play live action before and after, and have become friends over the years. Sometimes when I sit down and see a few of the gang at the table I have to say the famous line from the iconic poker movie Rounder’s, “Beautiful … all the way to Atlantic City just to see your mugs!” Funny - even while playing in Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Phoe-

We were sitting in the middle of the huge 22 table Lodge Poker Room, with a crowd gathered around, champagne glasses clinking, and the cards for the first legal $10 - $20 limit poker game in Black Hawk since the old west days in the air at midnight! Whoo Hoo! It has been exciting to observe and be a part of the maturing of poker throughout the Black Hawk/Central City poker scene - and I am very excited to see what changes, surprises, and big wins the room has in store for the players over the next 100 articles! 100th Poker Column
This is my 100th “Let’s Play Poker” article and it seems like yesterday the first one was published back during the week of March 11 - 17, 2008. One line I wrote in that first column, “The poker scene in the Black Hawk and Central City area has seen many changes since the opening of limited stakes gambling in 1991” still pertains today as the poker scene continues to evolve, become more standardized, and consolidate. In 2008, it was the smaller poker rooms such as those in the Easy Street Casino, Doc Holidays and the emerging power room the Gilpin Casino taking center stage. While those are gone today, the few poker rooms that were able to grow with the times and survive under the same names include the Ameristar, the Golden Gates, and the Lodge. When that first article came out, there were approximately 87 poker tables spread throughout the two mountain towns, many in small one, two, or PAGE 14

three table rooms. Today that number is down to 68 tables and the tables are centered in a few large rooms. After the fact, it is clear this consolidation was necessary because in those early days it was harder to start a game and to keep it going - even with proposition players (those paid by the casino to play) filling some seats. Sometimes a player would wait and a game would never materialize. That is not the case today - the games are professionally managed, easy to find, usually full, and with a wide variety of limits available.
It’s been a great eight plus years of poker writing and as I perused through the hard copies of the columns that have been published over the years, memories came flooding back. As the famous line in the iconic Grateful Dead song says, “Lately, it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it’s been” so to that end; here is a list of my top five moments at the Poker Tables that stretches from the first article back in 2008 and this one: 5) Big tournament win at the Gilpin Casino. Trail’s End
John Wesley Powell
His expedition along the Green River through Brown’s Park
O
n May 24, 1869, Major John Wesley Powell, a Civil War veteran who lost an arm during the conflict, led a group of nine men on an expedition of the Green and Colorado rivers. It was an epic journey, one of the first attempts at navigating unknown waterways in the West. It would take Powell and his men through an incredible waterway trip straight through the heart of Brown’s Park. Powell commissioned the construction of four boats specially built for the trip by a firm in Chicago and had them transported to Green River City, Wyoming, via the Union Pacific Railroad. Three of the group’s four boats, the Maid of the Canyon, Kitty Clyde’s Sister, and the No Name, measured 21 feet in length. Each were built of oak, “stanch and firm” as Powell would later say, and strengthened by bulkheads divided into three compartments, one of which was watertight. The fourth boat, the Emma Dean, was named for Powell’s wife. It was smaller, 16 feet long, and made of pine; therefore, lighter in weight. This boat carried enough rations to last for 10 months, as well as needed tools, several guns and a large supply of ammunition. Surveying equipment, including chronometers, an assortment of barometers, thermometers, and compasses, were carefully packed into the boat. The Emma Dean, carrying Major Powell, became the pilot boat for the expedition down the Green River. Launching at Green River, Wyoming, the men maneuvered through hazardous waters. Two days into their voyage, on May 26, the party entered the first canyon, naming it Flaming Gorge. The men set up camp and explored the river from a high ridge. Seeing the high rapids downriver, prepaAugust 2-15, 2016
rations were made to balance and steady the boats. On May 30, Powell and his crew ran the rapids through Flaming Gorge. On June 2, the group encountered unsafe rapids. Powell instructed his men to different points on an overlooking ridge of the river. With strong ropes attached to the boats, the men pulled the boats through the roiling rapids. The crafts were then pulled to a safe bank along the southern region of Flaming Gorge near a spot the men named Beehive Point. Powell and his men spent a few days camped in the area. During an exploration, the men discovered an inscription chiseled into one of the canyon walls which read, “Ashley 1805.” William Ashley, of the American Fur Company, had attempted to ford the very rapids Powell’s men avoided. Ashley and one of his crewmen were the only survivors. On June 4, Powell and his men left Beehive Point which is approximately midway between Flaming Gorge and the Green River valley of Brown’s Park in the northwestern corner of what is now Colorado. The following day, the river brought the men into the area of Brown’s Park. Finding a spot to pull along the bank, Powell and his men set up camp on the evening of June 5. After spending the next two days exploring the area, the Powell expedition continued their voyage along the Green River. On June 8, the group entered another canyon, at the southern edge of Brown’s Park. As the men maneuvered down the river, they approached a very fast-flowing area with dangerous rapids. Powell later wrote that with the rush of roaring waters, the river would “take over our boats.” Once
again, the boats were attached to ropes and Powell’s crew negotiated them through the river rapids. As the men brought the boats to calmer water, Powell scouted for a place to camp. During a conversation at camp, the beauty of the rock canyon was discussed. Powell wrote in his journal, “One of the party suggests we call it the Canyon of Lodore, and the name is adopted.” Today the “Gates of Lodore Canyon” mark the southern boundary of Brown’s Park. Of all the dangers and hazards the Powell expedition faced during this first of two expeditions, the worst calamity occurred on June 9, 1869, in Brown’s Park’s Lodore Canyon. Late in the afternoon, as the crew were maneuvering the boats through another set of rapids in the narrow can-
eventually managed to swim to an island in the middle of the river. Crew members aboard another boat rescued the men and brought them ashore. This was catastrophic for the expedition. With the loss of the boat, the remaining three boats would have to accommodate the “No Name” crew, adding weight to those vessels. More importantly, all of the scientific equipment, including telescopes, compasses and barometers, were stored in the compartments of the “No Name.” These instruments were vital to the expedition, in order to determine the altitude and direction of the river at various points along its course, which was one of the major objectives of the expedition. The following morning, June 10, Powell discovered that the

yon, the “No Name” vessel was sucked into the center of the rapids. The boat then hit a rock and broke in two. The crew, thrown into the rushing waters,
aft section of the boat had broken loose from its stranded position, and had been carried some 50 feet further downstream to a calm area in the

river. Powell’s pilot boat, the “Emma Jean,” was used to attempt to reach this section of the broken boat. The rescue attempt was successful and the scientific instruments were recovered. However, nearly a third of the food supply, also stored on the boat, was lost. The Powell expedition, now in the third week of traversing the Green River, was low on food. Before Powell and his crew left the Brown’s Park area, more disasters befell them. The crews faced more rapids, more rocks and even more portages. On the evening of June 12, the men discovered another wreckage of the Ashley expedition. Because both the Ashley and Powell expeditions encountered such serious catastrophes, with this set of rapids the Powell crew named the area Disaster Falls. On June 15, the Powell expedition faced an incredible section of the river where it dropped over 100 feet in a distance of a half mile. The “Maid of the Canyon” vessel was feared lost but then recovered undamaged. The men aptly named this area “Hell’s Half-Mile.” Powell and his men safely arrived at the confluence of the Green and Yampa rivers on June 17. John Wesley Powell described the perils encountered in Lodore Canyon in his journal: “This has been a chapter of disasters and toils, notwithstanding which the Canyon of the Lodore was not devoid of scenic interest, even beyond the power of pen to tell. The roar of its waters was heard unceasingly from the hour we entered it until we landed here. No quiet in all that time. But its walls and cliffs, its peaks and crags, its amphitheaters and alcoves tell a story of beauty and grandeur that I hear yet - and shall hear.” PAGE 17

Then I commented, they commented and days passed with me looking at my phone every few minutes to comment on their latest comment. It would have taken us both even longer if we checked our facts before we posted. But who has time for that? I’m just not up to dealing with ignorance today.
