By Peter Jones It is about 9,000 miles from Littleton, U.S.A. to Bega, Australia, but the two cities never seem that far apart when a delegation from one visits the other. “I have to say it’s a thrill, and it’s really like coming home,” Bega’s Barb Westmacott said last week in Bega Park, which is named for Littleton’s longtime sister city. Westmacott also had a few words for her fellow Australians. “For those who are here for the first time, you’ll [feel the same way] by the end of this – probably this day, but certainly by the end of the visit,” she said. Westmacott, who is on her third official visit to Littleton, was a leader among a delegation of 25 Bega residents whose 10-day visit to Littleton concludes this weekend. The busy trip was designed to run parallel to Littleton’s 85th annual Western Welcome Week celebrations, during which the Bega delegation participated in last weekend’s Grand Parade. The visit kicked off Aug. 15 with a welcome from Littleton city officials and civic leaders who unveiled the newly renamed Bega Street, a block of Rio Grande Street that runs through Bega Park between Main Street and Alamo Avenue.

Sunshine or a total eclipse? By Peter Jones Rumors have swirled about the controversial firing of onetime Littleton City Attorney Suzanne Staiert since 2011 when she was paid $143,000 as part of an agreement that forestalled any future legal claims against the city. By the time Staiert cleared out her desk, it had come to light that she had recently filed a sexual-harassment claim against a municipal judge – a fact that City Council members insisted had nothing to do with her termination. All that is known, officially, is that on Sept. 20, 2011, Staiert was abruptly fired by a council vote of 5-2 – with little fanfare or official comment – shortly after the council had discussed the matter during a 90-minute executive session not open to the public. Such mysteries and ensuing rumors of municipal government – as well as privileged city contract negotiations and private personnel matters – would be a thing of the past in Littleton government if a group of citizen activists gets its way. In general, discussions must cover the following: • Purchase or sale of real estate • Details of security arrangements or investigations • Strategy for contract negotiations • Personnel matters specific to a given employee or employees • Legal advice from the city attorney • Matters that must be kept confidential per state or federal law If Brzeczek’s initiative is successful, all but the last two would be completely cut from Littleton’s executive-session criteria, and even the exemption for private legal advice would be Continued on page 6

Palisade peaches available now throughout Colorado They call it the “million dollar breeze;” that ideal flow of air that keeps the produce at the perfect temperature in the Grand Valley of western Colorado. This breeze, paired with spring runoff and varying daily temperatures, provides ideal growing conditions for the world-famous Palisade Peaches, plus an abundance of other fruits and vegetables. Not to overlook the grapes in the region, supporting award-winning wineries in Colorado’s Wine Country. This mecca of fresh living includes the cities of Grand Junction, Fruita and Palisade. Grand Valley peaches should now be available all across Colorado. To really experience this summer’s sweetest treat, take time to travel to the orchards for a memorable getaway. Only four hours from Denver, visitors can find fresh-picked, just-off-thetree peaches and peach products at roadside stands throughout the Grand Junction area. What else should you do when planning a visit to Grand Junction during peach season? • Explore – Many orchards
Take a trip to Grand Valley and find fresh-picked, just-off-thetree peaches and peach products to enjoy. Courtesy photo offer tours for a close-up view of fruit varieties, organic growing, picking, community-supported agriculture, selection, packing, distribution and marketing. • Farmers’ market – Taking place Thursday evenings through Sept. 19, the market offers
seasonal fruits and vegetables. Connect with the farmers directly. • Wineries – Colorado’s Wine Country features 21 tasting rooms. The local wineries produce almost every type of wine, including many peach wines. All wineries are small and personal,
with most offering free tastings and winery tours. Peach wines also will make appearances at the Sept. 19-22 Colorado Mountain Winefest in nearby Palisade. • Get Outdoors - Among Grand Junction’s spectacular red cliffs and winding canyons is the Colorado National Monument. Also worth exploring is the world’s tallest flattop mountain, the Grand Mesa and then there is the Bookcliff Wild Horse Area, two national scenic byways and five scenic golf courses. For more information on visiting Grand Junction, or to take advantage of their Bushel of Summer Savings lodging packages that celebrate the peach harvest, visit www.VisitGrandJunction. com or call 970-244-1480. Here is a recipe to use the ripe Palisade Peaches:
Pasta with Peaches and Pancetta
8 oz pasta of your choice 1 tbsp olive oil 4 oz pancetta, cut into small dice 1-2 leeks, white part only, split,
washed, and thinly sliced 2 Palisade peaches, washed and pitted, coarsely chopped 4 cups baby spinach or arugula, washed, stems removed ¼ cup dry white wine 1 tbsp butter salt and pepper 2 tbsp toasted pine nuts Boil the pasta. While the pasta cooks, add the oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the pancetta and cook, stirring occasionally until it begins to turn golden brown. Add the leeks and peaches and continue cooking until the leeks soften. Add spinach and toss until it begins to wilt. Add the wine and continue cooking until the liquid is mostly evaporated, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, but keep warm. Drain the pasta well and add it and the butter to the other ingredients in the skillet. Toss to combine and melt the butter. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Transfer to serving dishes and garnish with pine nuts. Serves 4. Recipe Compliments of Mr. Wayne smith, assistant technical professor, Culinary Arts, Western Colorado Community College.

Arapahoe County Commissioner Rod Bockenfeld has been named chairman of the 2013-2014 National Association of Counties’ Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs Steering Committee. NACo is the only national organization that represents county governments in the United States. It was founded in 1935 and it provides essential services to the nation’s 3,069 counties by providing a unified voice before the federal government, improving the public’s understanding of county government and assisting counties in finding and sharing innovative solutions to local government issues through education and research. The Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs Steering Committee is responsible for NACo policy development on all matters pertaining to the financial resources of counties, fiscal management, federal assistance, municipal borrowing, county revenues, federal budget, federal tax reform, elections and Native American issues. Bockenfeld has been active in NACo since 2005 and has served in several leadership positions on the Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs Steering Committee, including six terms as a subcommittee chair. “At a time when our federal government is entertaining tax reform, I can’t think of a higher honor than being allowed to represent the interest of our nation’s county governments,” Bockenfeld said. Bockenfeld, who represents District 3, which includes portions of the cities of Centennial and Aurora, the town of Foxfield and the towns of Bennett, Deer Trail and unincorporated eastern Arapahoe County, is serving his third, four-year term. He currently is board chairman, a position he also served in 2006, 2010 and 2011. He is the past chairman of the Denver Regional Council of Governments.

Flood School reduced to rubble to make way for development Recently, Englewood’s storied Flood Middle School on the southeast corner of Hampden and Broadway was demolished after an asbestos abatement process this summer. The rubble has since been removed to make room for a large residential development. The school was officially named Mary Louise Flood Junior High years ago, probably in the mid 1950s. Renee Sitler (taking a photo), a 1962 graduate of Flood School visited the site to record the events for her three sisters, Joy, Marlita and Nancy, all graduates of the school, taking photographs. The original school’s
name was Englewood Junior High and the name was changed to honor Flood who had been the principal when Sitler attended. The schools mascot was the Pirates. Flood School closed in 2007 with 300 students. Sinclair Middle School, now named Englewood Middle School, instructs the students from both schools. The property was sold by the Englewood Public School District, for $2 million to Barbury Holdings, one of the developers. After site work is completed on this 4.5-acre property, developers will begin construction on 300 to 350 rental apartments.
Arapahoe County Commissioner Bill Holen, a military veteran, has been appointed by U.S. Sen. Mark Udall and U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman to chair a bipartisan task force to explore the issues of post-traumatic stress in military service men and women returning from war overseas. Holen said the task force will hear from physicians, military officials and veterans who have struggled with post-traumatic stress. The task force will issue its recommendations on possible reforms that Udall and Coffman should pursue in Congress to better help veterans. “I appreciate the confidence of Sen. Udall and Rep. Coffman in appointing me to chair this task force to better understand the problem of post-traumatic stress,” Holen said. “We owe it to our military to address this insidious problem affecting our men and women returning home from the battle on the global war
on terror.” Holen served in the Army in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, in the Colorado Air National Guard from 1981 to 1991, and attended the Army War College National Security Seminar in 2009. He serves as a goodwill ambassador to the Air Force as a 460th Space Wing representative in the Air Force Space Command Com-
mander’s Group. In 2012, Holen was one of 25 volunteers throughout the United States asked to participate in the Commander’s Group, which meets with Air Force leaders to learn more about the current Air Force and Air Force Space Command operations and programs. Earlier this year, Holen was selected to attend the 60th Annual National Security Forum, which offers civilians a unique opportunity to engage in open and candid discussions with senior military and civilian leaders on national and international security topics. Holen is serving his first term as Arapahoe County commissioner representing District 5, which includes the cities of Glendale and portions of Aurora. Prior to serving as commissioner, Holen was the constituent-services representative for U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, where he focused on national security, defense and veterans-affairs issues.

The Wellness Court holds defendants accountable and helps them to achieve long-term stability to become law-abiding citizens and successful family and community members. “I am humbled by the hard work our graduates have put into the program as they worked toward this day,” Magistrate McLean said. “It is an honor to be part of a group of dedicated professionals who make the program work, and so gratifying to see people returning to their communities and families with a new vision for their lives and new tools
to help themselves succeed.” The Wellness Court is supported by the district attorney’s office, public defender’s office, probation department, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department and Arapahoe Douglas Mental Health Network. “Like other problem-solving courts in this district and elsewhere, the 18th Judicial District Wellness Court continues to prove itself a vitally important part of Colorado’s criminal justice system,” said 18th Judicial District Chief Judge William B. Sylvester. “These courts have made great strides in providing a variety of treatment options to those with mental health needs – sometimes options that would not have been available in prison.”

After more than two years of intensive supervision and extensive treatment, three participants in the 18th Judicial District (Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties) Wellness Court had a graduation ceremony Aug. 1. The Wellness Court (or Mental Health Court), presided over by Magistrate Bonnie McLean, enrolls participants who otherwise would have stayed in jail. With more than 40 participants, the court is saving Arapahoe County and state taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in incarceration costs by keeping offenders accountable and safely in their communities. The court’s mission is to reduce recidivism of offenders with mental illness, promote public

for last week’s unveiling and grand welcome in Bega Park. The celebration included performances of the U.S. and Australian national anthems and a sing-along of the latter’s folk classic “Waltzing Matilda.” Sir Mark O’Regan, the Greenwood Village-based Australian consulate of the Rocky Mountain region, said the Australian government is proud to be part of the 52year relationship between Littleton and Bega. “There are two levels of diplomacy,” he said. “The first is through our embassies and consulates. The most important level is though our citizen diplomats who travel the world promoting good relations between Australia and other countries.”
The friendship between the two cities has its roots in the early 1950s when Houstoun Waring, publisher of the Littleton Independent, appeared in a U.S. State Department film promoting the idea of an independent small-town press to world audiences. When W.B. “Curly” Annabel, editor of Bega District News in New South Wales, saw the film, he was struck by the similarities between the two cities and their respective newspapers. The two journalists eventually struck up a pen-pal relationship before meeting face to face in trips across the Pacific Ocean. By the late 1950s as President Eisenhower began to push the burgeoning sister-city program as a way to foster people-to-people diplomacy around the world, Waring and Annabel crafted a more formal bond

between the two cities, thus creating the first-ever U.S.-Australia sistercity relationship. It was soon established that each city would send a delegation to the other twice each decade. Delegates would be housed by host families to give visitors an authentic taste of Aussie or Yank culture. Littleton will visit Bega next in 2016. Dozens of lasting friendships have flourished as a result of the longstanding sister-city relationship. Littleton’s Elfi Smith showed off a hat she traded with Australian friend Kay Rogers over a period of years during back-and-forth visits – a tradition that lasted until Rogers’s death last year. “I’ve treasured every visit and it has enriched my life,” Smith said. “… It will be a keepsake forever.”

South metro Denver having great success KINDLING

Good planning makes for great developments I can remember when the new Hilton was built at Hampden and I-25 about three decades ago. Now the hotel is completely gone
and new high-density housing and retail outlets have replaced the once busy hotel. Hampden is really an improving street with the new Target at Tamarac, which was once my favorite shopping mall with the smart red brick flooring. Citron Bistro, located at 3535 S. Yosemite St., provides wonderful food and special brunches. The family business, run by brothers George Karas and Tom Karantounis, is so well run and operated and provides consistent high quality food and service. Keep going on Hampden around the bend to Havana and you’ll find Ed and Gail Novak’s Summit Steak House. What a wonderful management they’ve brought to this famous steakhouse.
Ed was well known for his famous Canterbury Inn in the DTC for years, the downtown Broker and now you can find him at the Summit, that’s the very top for this great couple. Farther south, Joe Blake founded and staked out Highlands Ranch for the Phillip Morris Company that started the Highlands Ranch Development called Mission Viejo in 1979. Today, the project is almost virtually complete with fabulous homes, Park Meadows, schools, churches, golf courses and more. This has been a great development and done so well from start to finish. The project developers have donated 12,702 acres of land for open space in the entire area, when complete over 12,900 acres

Mayor Brinkman: ‘Ballot measure ill conceived’ Continued from Page 1 severely limited. To hear Brzeczek tell it, legal quagmires, such as Staiert’s controversial firing, have made the case for such restrictions – even when it comes to the historically sacred right of attorney-client privilege. She disagrees with the council reaching decisions about legal issues within the confines of an executive session. “This council is delegating their authority to an attorney to go and settle lawsuits, but they never publicly vote on the settlements,” she said. “I don’t see how you go about settling a lawsuit without taking any kind of vote.” The same goes for land pur-

chases and negotiations for contracted services, all of which are handled with some degree of secrecy. But Brinkman says there are good reasons for holding those internal contract talks behind closed doors. “We have made negotiations that have saved the city a substan-
tial amount of money,” the mayor said. “It’s not about holding information from citizens. It’s about being able to have a stronger negotiating position. You only have that if you’re holding some cards. That is protecting the public.” If Brzeczek’s initiative makes the ballot, Brinkman expects the council to counter with its own affirmative ballot question that would ask citizens to allow executive sessions to continue as usual. It remains unclear what would happen if both ballot issues were to pass. “I suppose that could happen,” Brinkman said. Election Day is Nov. 5.
Centennial sees conflict over executive session Councilmember says ballot issue should have been discussed openly
L
By Peter Jones ittleton is not the only city to struggle with the secrecy and inherent mystery of a city council executive session. Most local governments have had their moments of conflict and discomfort when their otherwise open government has briefly closed for private meetings. Centennial saw a brief hubbub recently when City Councilman Rick Dindinger raised objections to that council’s decision to privately discuss the implications of a proposed council-initiated ballot issue. Dindinger and Mayor Cathy Noon were the only two councilmembers to vote against the executive session – though Noon, who is facing a determined outsider in this year’s re-election campaign,
had moments earlier expressed her support for the private meeting. Neither official attended the executive session. Although Dindinger says he supports executive sessions for contract negotiations, as well as for legal and personnel matters, the official says a city government should be entirely transparent about an issue as fundamentally public as a ballot question. “It is dumbfounding that we would be doing that in an executive session,” he said. “I did not believe that the council’s reasons outweighed the principles of transparency and openness in government, particularly when it comes to something that is going to be on the ballot.” Although the nature of the proposed question for this November’s ballot was not revealed at the time of the July 15 executive session, the council has since publicly discussed the specifics of its proposal. The council gave final approval this week to a ballot ques-
tion that will ask voters if the city should explore other applications for 42 miles of publicly owned fiber optic lines. Although they are now used for traffic-signal operations and connecting public facilities, approval of the initiative would allow the city to lease the lines to the telecommunications industry. Amid the potential for concern among cable and television service providers and those who might object to governments entering private industry, Dindinger was troubled that the reasons for the private meeting might be more strategic than legal. According to City Attorney Robert Widner, the executive session was justified because of the issue’s law-based implications. “I was advising the council on why they might want to consider a potential ballot question given the state of the law,” he said. “It wasn’t just a potential ballot question. It was a course of action.” Election Day is Nov. 5.

Arapahoe County OKs pipeline Oil industry agrees to 19 conditions
By Peter Jones About 13 miles of the Front Range Pipeline is expected to pass through eastern Arapahoe County by the end of the year. The Board of Commissioners has approved its share of a 435-mile naturalgas conduit that is slated to carry about 150,000 barrels a day from Weld County to Skellytown, Texas. The unanimously approved resolution contained 19 conditions that included restrictions on the hours of operation, a maintenance agreement for private roads and clarifications on binding easements with property owners. “It wasn’t easy. We had a lot of questions,” Commissioner Rod Bockenfeld said of negotiations that led to the Aug. 13 vote. “In the end, the oil and gas people were very cooperative. Almost everything we asked for, they generally accepted.” Bockenfeld, the Centennial Republican who chairs the fivemember board, says his constituents in eastern Arapahoe County, where the pipeline will be built,
generally favored the project once their concerns were addressed. “Many have mineral rights and they’re very supportive of oil and gas exploration,” he said. “There are a handful that are skeptical and concerned, but we’ve been able to mitigate enough of their concerns.” The pipeline is expected to have little long-term impact on the rural area, as the underground line will not interfere with existing agricultural land. No structures can be built under or near the pipeline, however. The pipeline will be a commercially assessed asset meaning more tax revenue for the county. Weld, Elbert and El Paso counties had already OK’d the project. Arapahoe’s decision leaves Adams County as the only holdout. Last month, that county’s board rejected a proposal to run the line near Denver International Airport, saying it would interfere with plans for economic development. Bockenfeld says he would have made the same decision as Adams had Arapahoe been in a similar situation. “If they were running this pipeline in an area Arapahoe County depended on for future
development, I would have absolutely been advocating for using our 1041 powers,” he said. Colorado’s so-named 1041 regulations allow city and county governments to regulate areas of statewide interest, such as oil and gas exploration, through a local permitting process. It remains unclear if Adams will be able to avoid the pipeline altogether due to the condemnation powers permitted by state law for utilities. Talks between the county and industry representatives are reportedly ongoing in efforts to find an alternative route for the pipeline. “If I know my colleagues in Adams County, they’ll hold their ground. They’re pretty strongwilled people up there,” Bockenfeld said. The pipeline is a partnership of Anadarko Petroleum, Enterprise Products Partners and Denverbased DCP Midstream. Construction on some sections of the pipeline began in May and will start in Arapahoe County next month. The line, which will be 16 inches in diameter and run through a 50-foot right-of-way, is expected to be in service by the end of the year.

Kathy Turley, a resident of Centennial for 35 years and an elected member of the commission that drafted the city charter, has announced her candidacy for City Council in District 1. The aging population has been an emphasis for Turley in recent years. Last year, the City Council appointed her to serve on the Senior Commission. Gov. Bill Owens appointed her to the Colorado Commission on Aging, where she served six years on the board. She was the governor’s delegate to the White House Conference on Aging. “Every seven seconds, someone is turning 60,” Turley said. “Ten thousand people a day are turning 65. Thirty
Kathy Turley percent of the population of Centennial is over 50. Whether you are a senior, caring for a senior or thinking about the upcoming golden years, you will need a voice at the table.
I will be your voice.” Turley is a past member of the Denver Regional Council of Governments’ Area Agency on Aging Advisory Board, where she received the Distinguished Award of Service. She currently serves on the Arapahoe County Council on Aging speakers bureau and on the InnovAge Advisory Council. Intense pulsed light Centennial hosts open house why your skin wants it for Potomac Park site
Submitted by Jeffrey L. Schmidt, MD Most people don’t think of the skin as an organ. The integumentary (skin) system, is actually the largest organ of the body. It serves many roles, including acting as a protective barrier against injury and infection as well as temperature regulation. The skin, like other organs, is especially susceptible to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and other environmental insults. Over time, these injuries – in addition to the natural aging process – can lead to wrinkles and discoloration. Even perfectly clear skin during youth can give way to splotchy appearing skin. Hormone fluctuations, sun exposure, and normal aging can trigger undesirable darkening of the skin. Some changes can be cause for concern and should be evaluated by a physician to rule out a skin cancer. We’ll cover that in detail in a future article. Prominent blood vessels, known in the medical world as telangiectasias, can begin to develop, giving an undesirable reddened appearance to the skin. These usually become more pronounced because the structure of the blood vessel, like all aging tissues, becomes less elastic and stretches. These stretched out vessels become engorged with blood and can contribute to an uneven appearance to the skin. Enter intense pulsed light. This technology utilizes bright light of varying frequencies to target the problems described above. While many think IPL is the same as a laser, it actually is different, for a handful of technical reasons. Typically, lasers treat a narrow range of problems because of its very specific light frequency. Since IPL uses multiple frequencies of light, it can treat multiple types of problems. The light energy from the IPL device is applied directly to the skin. Usually, no topical anesthesia is required, as most treatments result in mild, if any, discomfort. The face

tends to be a little more sensitive than skin of other parts of the body. A cooling gel is applied to the skin over the area to be treated. When treating darkened spots, light passes through the skin until it strikes pigment molecules called melanin. The melanin absorbs this energy, causing it and the skin cells that produce it to become less prominent. The same process occurs for red vascular spots (comprised of blood vessels). The hemoglobin molecule in red blood cells absorbs the energy in these skin areas. Other uses for IPL include hair reduction, acne treatment, and skin tightening. Different hand pieces may be used to target the various problems. A consultation with a qualified physician will allow you to determine if your particular problem may be improved using IPL technology. Before treatment, you should avoid sun exposure, as this can cause skin tanning and cause lightening of both spots as well as “normal” skin areas. Skin irritants, like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and topical acids (vitamin C, retinoic, glycolic) should be avoided, as they can cause additional sensitivity and redness. Slight redness immediately following IPL treatment is normal, and this usually resolves within 24-48 hours. Following treatment, continue to avoid direct sun exposure and skin irritants until your physician or other provider tells you otherwise. Typically, 4-6 treatments are required to achieve the desired results. Therefore, IPL treatments are often sold in packages. Remember, this is a medical treatment that comes with potential risks. Therefore, it’s important that you seek treatment from a qualified healthcare professional with appropriate training. Light rail ridership continues to increase in south metro area Greenwood Village Goose Chase is Aug. 25
G
By Jan Wondra reenwood Village City Council issued a report highlighting the importance of light rail to the long-term economic development of the area. The Southeast Light Rail system is a crucial piece of the transportation system of the south metro area, and especially to Greenwood Village. Completed in 2006, the system has continued to fuel commercial growth along the corridor from inception, through construction, to completion. Greenwood Village has three metro stops: Orchard, Arapahoe at Village Center and the Belleview station. From the rough lots of its beginnings, light rail is now supported by paved parking lots and parking garages, as well as bike storage and coordinated bus connections. Ridership is growing, with each station reporting a steady uptick in total activity (total passengers who get on and off
at each location) and in both northbound and southbound passenger loads. From 2009 to 2012, traffic at the Dayton station went up 104 percent, while traffic at Arapahoe at Village Center went up 30 percent. The Orchard station had a 24 percent increase, and the Belleview station was up 23 percent. Growing traffic congestion will continue to fuel light rail ridership. In the 2012 Annual Report on Traffic Congestion, Denver Regional Council of Governments measured the number of vehicle miles traveled as 74.2 million miles every single weekday. RTD projects that regional transit system ridership will more than double by the year 2035.

Murphy Meet this weekend
Family event benefits kids grieving loss The second annual Murphy Meet will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Cottonwood Park, 11350 E. Orchard Road in Greenwood Village. This event will honor the memory of fallen Aurora firefighter and Greenwood Village resident Jason Murphy, who was hit and killed last year while riding his bicycle to the fire station. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and two daughters, Bridget and Natalie. The event will include a kids adventure race for $10, live music from the Highlands Ranch Swingers, a silent auction, face painters, jugglers and a balloon artist. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Last year, the Murphy Meet raised more than $7,000 for the Bridget and Natalie Murphy College Fund. This year, funds will be split evenly between the college fund and Judi’s House, a nonprofit organization that helps families, especially children, who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

Central City Opera’s ‘Show Boat’ couples with Riverboat Royale By Glory Weisberg The Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein twosome delivered unforgettable musical Broadway shows and movies and their Show Boat production was one of their best. Based on the novel by that name, Edna Ferber’s original work, which was first performed in 1927, is still magnificent today. The Central City Opera 2013 season held the opera in the Temple Buell Theatre as part of their new agenda bringing one opera per summer season to Denver, keeping its other two productions in Central City. That plan is a winner and their rendition of Show Boat was such a rousing success we literally leaped out of our seats, clapping and cheering as the final curtain came down. I remember the movie version of the musical and when it hit the Buell stage, I still recalled virtually every word, silently mouthing each lyric. The opera, in English of course, was beautifully staged with magnificent operatic voices. This is the Harold Prince version of Show Boat that originally hit the stage lights in 1994 and brings whole new generations to fall in love with it. Opera supporter Nancy Parker noted just before the Aug. 10 matinee performance that this was her third time seeing the opera in recent weeks. This was a special afternoon for those who attended Riverboat Royale, a post-performance event at the Dikeou Collection, a few blocks from the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Offering Creole cuisine from Bayou Bob’s, the party included cocktails from Breckenridge Distillery and other yummy looking special drinks, augmented by live jazz performers, a palm reader, blackjack and Texas Hold’em faux gambling and Pop-up opera Central City Opera Ensemble Artists who sang their hearts out, mingling
with the munching patrons, as stilt walker Matt Bergen added to the fun atmosphere. Don and Arlene Mohler Johnson, Industrial Income and Perkins Cole, were sponsors. Central City Opera staffers Heather Brecl and Valerie Hamlin made the rounds, making sure everyone was having a New Orleans style good time. The 2014 Central City Opera Festival includes the Rogers and Hammerstein hit, The Sound of Music, which is that season’s Buell Theatre opera. The Marriage of Figaro and Dead Man Walking will be performed in Central City.

Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation funding support comes to CHV By Glory Weisberg enny Sanford lost his mother, Edith Sanford to breast cancer when he was only 4 years old after she had spent her final year in a hospital bed, hoping that she would still get a chance to enjoy watching her boys grow up. Unfortunately, her life was cut short and Denny lost his courageous mom. Fast forward to a grown up Denny who became an entrepreneur and in 2010 started the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation. That foundation now has facilities in 126 communities in eight states. Their goal is to find each woman’s personal genetic code and thus find better prevention and treatment, which perhaps could have enabled Denny’s mom to fulfill her dream. That foundation is now partnering with Sanford Health, which provides patient care and research

and on Aug. 8 their efforts arrived in Cherry Hills Village, to the home of breast cancer survivor, Arlene Mohler Johnson and her husband, Don Johnson. The couple held a “Meet Edith” event that was slated to take place outside near the Johnson’s elegant pool. It began as a beautiful setting for the many guests Arlen and Don invited to witness the presentation. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had opposing plans that brought a steady downpour to the outdoors, forcing Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation president, Kimberly Simpson and staffers Gina Berg and Director of philanthropy, Patty Franson to continue their efforts to provide financial support inside the marble walled mansion. This was one very tasty local effort kickoff with Lawrence
French’s Lifestyle Catering offering an elegant buffet. The Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation is focusing on DNA research, and hopes to unlock the codes in the human genome some day. The present plan of treatment for breast cancer can include chemotherapy that assaults not only the breast cancer in a woman’s body but makes the rest of her body suffer the side effects. Since almost every one of us knows about the side effects of such treatment, there is a considerable groundswell of motivation to further research toward individualized treatment. As part of their mission, Sanford said, “It’s not just about the disease, it’s about the survivors.” For more information visit www.sanfordhealth.org. gloryweisberg@comcast.net
Cancer Society seeks volunteers for historic study Submitted by American Cancer Society Local volunteers will have one last chance to participate in a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are needed to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3. CPS-3 will enroll a diverse population of up to half a million people across the United States and Puerto Rico and will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. Those who wish to participate in the study can enroll at one of four Greenwood Village and Littleton locations: Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club – 5801 S. Quebec St., Greenwood Village, Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 3-7 p.m. Century Cancer Center – 5275 DTC Parkway, Greenwood Village, Thursday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Regis University College for Professional Studies – 6380 S. Fiddlers Green Circle Ste. 200, Greenwood Village, Friday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Littleton Adventist Hospital – 7700 S. Broadway, Littleton, Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 3-7 p.m. Additional enrollment locations are also located across the
metro Denver area. To make an appointment or for a complete list of metro Denver locations, date and times, visit www.cps3Colorado.org. To enroll, individuals who go to a local enrollment location will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form, complete a brief survey, have their waist circumference measured and give a small blood sample. The process takes approximately 20-30 minutes. At home, individuals will complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for information on lifestyle, behavior and other factors. Upon completion of this process, the American Cancer Society will continue to send periodic follow-up surveys to update participant information and annual newsletters with study updates and results. The initial and follow-up surveys completed at home will take an hour or less to complete and are expected to be sent every few years. “CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that we can be better equipped to prevent cancer,” said Alpa Patel, Ph.D., principal investigator of CPS-3. “Our previous cancer prevention studies have been instrumental in helping us identify some of the major factors that can affect cancer risk. CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks, and we
can only do this if members of the community are willing to become involved.” Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s that collectively have involved millions of volunteer participants. The Hammond-Horn Study and previous Cancer Prevention Studies have played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk and have contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommendations. Those studies confirmed the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, demonstrated the link between larger waist size and increased death rates from cancer and other causes, and showed the considerable impact of air pollution on heart and lung conditions. “Taking an hour or so every few years to fill out a survey – and potentially save someone from being diagnosed with cancer in the future – is a commitment that thousands of volunteer participants have already made,” Patel said. “We’re looking for more like-minded individuals across metro Denver to join this effort that we know will save lives and improve the outlook for future generations.” For more information or to learn how to become involved, visit www.cancer.org/cps3 or call toll-free 1-888-604-5888.

This is the second installment on wedding etiquette for those previously married who are tying the knot again. We began this topic last week in the Aug. 15 edition. Now about a wedding shower. Let your friends join in your excitement, and gaining popularity is the couple’s shower with men and women alike invited to say, a barbecue or other informal shower setting. More than one shower was the spot for two singles to meet and
meld into their own romance. We don’t want to ruin your mood by dictating what the bride should wear to her second or more nuptials because this has changed since your first wedding. These brides often now go for the full regalia: white gown, full bouquet and even veil. Not a good idea to wear the same outfit as the one you wore for your first wedding. Get a new gown or cocktail dress and accessories. Maybe the groom’s got his grandmother’s pearls for you to wear and wouldn’t his family cherish this look. Check with the officiant such as a priest, minister or rabbi and ask what they require. A friend from a while back found out almost too late that she had to wear a full veil again and no cleavage. As one of our own siblings pointed out to me some years back, “this is a religious ceremony.” If it’s a civil only ceremony, go for the gown or dress of your dreams, and guys, get a new suit. I once went to a Western theme wedding with the couple in jeans. I didn’t like it. So much more goes into this touchy topic we’ll address other second-time-around issues in future GloryUs Goings On columns. You are invited to email me with questions or comments as I have that 400+ page Emily Post book in my hands already, and yes, other readers are chiming in. Join the fun conversation! And no, I won’t publish your name unless you specifically say you want it “out there.” gloryweisberg@comcast.net

Clermont Park Retirement Community celebrates grand reopening
250 guests gather to celebrate completion $66.5 million makeover
O
Submitted by Chuck Montera n a sunny and warm late July afternoon, approximately 250 Clermont Park Retirement Community residents, staff and community leaders gathered to celebrate the grand reopening of their community and the completion of a $66.5 million makeover and expansion that began five years ago. Located in southeast Denver, near Yale Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, Clermont’s, Party at the Park was a celebration of the community’s new chapter of providing a full continuum of high quality care for residents while recognizing its 40-year history. One of the festive residents in attendance was Phyllis Dye, who was in charge of gathering dreams and well-wishes for Clermont Park’s tree planting ceremony. Party guests were asked to jot down any dreams or messages they had on biodegradable paper. The messages were then placed at the base of a tree being planted near the community entrance. “Any dreams are welcome including dreams of love, prosperity and hope and if you have trouble coming up with one, I have about ten I can share with you,” said Dye. “Our founders would approve of the expansion of services and levels of care we now provide to Clermont

Park residents,” said Russ DenBraber, Christian Living Communities president and chief executive officer. “The fact that we came in under budget and on time to provide a full continuum of high quality care speaks to the hard work by our staff, contracting partners and residents.” The health care and living options at Clermont Park now include • 74 new retirement living apartment homes utilizing tablet technology to connect residents to community life.
• Renovation of 92 existing retirement living apartment homes. • A new 63-suite skilled nursing community. • 15 new assisted living and 17 memory support apartments. • State of the art fitness center and rehabilitation gym with AlterG© NASA created therapy system. • A new Town Center. • A new Adult Day Services. • An onsite Centura physician’s clinic. Clermont Park’s upgrades also
include the installation of solar panels to provide electricity for the expanded community. Nearly 500 solar modules, capable of generating 327 watts each, were installed this spring. This translates into a reduction 509,522 pounds of CO2 emissions annually. Installer Namaste Solar was at the grand reopening to explain improved efficiencies and reduction of the community’s car-
bon footprint. To celebrate the community’s art programs, guests were encouraged to participate in “Painting in the Park” art demonstrations, where a painting of a tree was being created using the thumb prints of party goers as the tree’s leaves. Spotlight On Business
Joining the Pilates Evolution By Peter Jones Karen Moore remembers when she realized Pilates needed to evolve. “I loved it. I always felt good and stretched out, but I never broke a sweat,” she said. “I always had to do something else. I never looked at it as exercise.” Moore had been using the Pilates rehabilitative physical-fitness system for treatment on her lower back, but would always have to make other arrangements for anything resembling a cardiovascular workout. Enter Sebastien Lagree, a Hollywood-based trainer who had long shared Moore’s hunch that Pilates could use a little reconditioning of its own and decided to retool the practice with a new emphasis on today’s busy multitaskers. In 2001, Lagree introduced his own self-designed workout that combined the holistic principles of Pilates’ core development with modern strength training and aerobic elements. Lagree Fitness – or the aptly named Pilates Plus – was born. “He had a lot of celebrity clients that all wanted more out of Pilates,” Moore said. “Being the smart guy that he is, he developed this piece of equipment and developed a much more intense workout – and a much more fun workout.” At the center of the new 40-minute routine is the versatile Proformer, a large multi-purpose machine that mixes the best of Pilates’ original equipment – the Reformer, the Cadillac and the Chair – into one larger user-friendly device. The resulting workout was said to encourage maximum resistance while jumpstarting one’s metabolism and improving strength and endurance in upper and lower muscles, burning fat, tightening muscle and

In May, Karen Moore opened her second Pilates Evolution studio in Centennial after running a successful operation in Cherry Creek North five years ago. Photos by Peter Jones called “Contrology.” In recent decades, the Pilates practice has expanded broadly into the larger culture, and the so-called “classical” Pilates has been fused with such “modern” elements as weightlifting, aerobics and contemporary equipment that Mr. Pilates would not have recognized before his death in 1967. “I think the fundamentals are definitely the same,” Cline said of the 21st century’s Lagree Fitness. “However, I think [Pilates] would be critical of the speed. We’re moving really quickly from exercise to exercise.” “A lot of people say it’s like Pilates on steroids,” Moore added, “because you take the basic concept of Pilates, which is very low stress on the joints – a lot of balance, everything’s based around the core – but in a faster, more hip environment.” Pilates Evolution strives to provide as many options as possible to help the uninitiated take the stretch. The two studios offer a free introductory class every week, and pro-
vide one-on-one sessions for those in need of specific rehabilitation. Lagree, the founder of the Pilates reinvention, will visit Pilates Evolution Oct. 12 to conduct a special workshop on the fitness program he created. Moore expects her business to only get healthier as the Pilates Evolution continues. “Fitness is going to be part of our future until somebody determines it’s bad for us,” she said with a laugh. “This is not faddish. It’s been based on something that’s been around for over 100 years.”

Cabela’s has distinctive grand opening in Lone Tree By Tom Barry wo of the biggest and most distinctive grand openings in recent Colorado history occurred Aug. 15, as Cabela’s opened two massive retail stores simultaneously. The Lone Tree and Thornton stores staged their respective events just prior to 11 a.m. This Sidney, Neb.-based outdoor retailer bussed in 200 corporate employees that had never witnessed a previous grand opening. Staff members left bright and early before the crack of dawn to take the nearly three-hour long bus trip along Interstate 76 in route to Lone Tree. Traffic was snarled in both directions on I-25 at the Ridgegate Parkway exit well in advance of the event. Drivers were directed to a parking lot about a mile away where Cabela’s operated a shuttle service to the new store. More than 5,000 anxious shoppers had amassed, along with employees, executives, and city and county elected officials in front of the new south metro Denver store that resembles a massive hunting and fishing lodge. Cabela’s may now become the new Lone Tree icon for drivers passing by, as it’s highly visible from I-25. A Cabela’s executive said they loved the location of their new store because it sits atop a mountain overlooking the area. In actuality, Cabela’s sits on a bluff in Lone Tree and their first Colorado store is located in the real mountains surrounding Grand Junction. Lone Tree’s Mayor Jim Gunning greeted the corporate executives, employees and customers welcoming them to the city. County Commissioner Jill Re-
T
pella said how she was impressed with the effort Cabela’s had put into the store. “We’re here to create lasting memories in the outdoors, its part of our nature,” said Karen Koons, Cabela’s store manager, reciting a corporate theme.
Memorable grand opening
After some very brief speeches, in lieu of the typical ribbon cutting, Cabela’s officially opened the store in a very distinctive manner. An archery expert, who was perched atop a black camouflaged hunter’s tower, shot an arrow into the center of a clay target for the symbolic opening. Two hundred employees then paraded in and formed a double line down the entranceway that customers then walked through. As excited customers hurried down the line, everyone was exchanging high fives, smiles and well wishes between employees and customers alike. “I was more afraid here of the crowds at the grand opening than I was landing on Okinawa,” said Jim Lampe, 89, a WWII Navy veteran jokingly as he attended the event with his daughter Donna Patton. Roy Miller, a new Cabela’s employee, spotted Lampe in the back of the crowd with his cane and assisted him and his daughter to the front of the line. Numerous current servicemen and women and veterans attended the Lone Tree opening. Customers quickly filled the store to capacity, as many customers had to wait in line for others to leave before they could enter. The shoppers quickly gathered Continued on page 27

The checkout line circled through the entire store with some customers waiting an hour to buy their items. “We picked this store and
having the vista view felt like a real natural for our building,” said Michael Copeland, Cabela’s COO, who brought his family to the opening. “Lone Tree came to us 18 months ago, they were such a great partner. I think that Colorado overall is a good market for
us, as 65 percent of all Coloradans enjoy the outdoors.” Matt Fry, who attended the Cabela’s opening with his 19-yearold daughter Paige, said, “This is a great event, we wanted to come out and take a look. I’m happy it’s in our backyard.”

Cabela’s founders visit new Lone Tree store By Tom Barry Dick and Mary Cabela, the founders of the prominent outdoor retail giant that bears their name, attended the Lone Tree grand opening Aug. 15. The couple, in there 70s, came to sign autographs for store employees and customers, and to visit with family and friends who stopped by to say hello. The Cabelas each visited with autograph seekers, as Dick wore his green camouflage sports coat. They signed anything from caps and T-shirts to free posters that were provided. Mary recounted that their retail adventure began when Dick attended a furniture show in Chicago and found a man who was selling hand-tied fishing flies. In 1961, Dick purchased all of the
flies and made a couple of attempts to market his goods – the rest is history. The outdoor outfitting firm based in Sidney, Neb., still utilizes their catalog business, online sales and 47 retail stores in North America. “We wanted to come here for a long time,” said Mary about their two new metro Denver stores. “This will have a damaging affect to our Sidney store,” said Dick. “This store will do well.” The couple will be married for 58 years this November and proudly shares that they have 23 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and nine children, many who were at the stores on opening day. The couple, in addition to their main residence in Sidney, also own a home in the metro area.
