A salute to Labor Day It’s Labor Day 2016 and we salute our gaming community’s labor force, along with all the other folks in America who have toiled in the fields, factories, armies, farms and ranches, oilfields, coalmines, bars and restaurants and garages, not to mention handymen, roofers, street pavers, janitors, police and firefighters, taxi drivers, chefs, waiters, waitresses, electricians, stock brokers, journalists, snow plowers, teachers, city, state and federal employees, insurance folks, doctors, nurses, clerks, welders, pilots, stewardesses, blackjack dealers, and the list goes on and on. But, since this is a gaming newspaper full of history about gold miners and gold mining, we must remember the early-day mining folks who worked so hard under such harsh conditions. In the early days, they didn’t have showers, maybe a bath in a copper tub with water heated in pans on the wood and coal stove. We’ve all seen the John Wayne and Clint Eastwood films with the cowboys taking a bath somewhere in a hotel or brothel. Very little medical facilities or medications. The remedy in the Civil War was just to amputate the wounded or broken limb. Whisky was about the only medication available, remember Lonesome Dove? Food had to be stored in a cellar or cool place, and it wouldn’t last long. Miners dined on bean, potatoes, buckskin, and no doubt some hunters combed the nearby mountains for big game. Fresh milk, eggs, butter and cream came from local cows and chickens. Bread from sacks of grain and corn that women would grind into flour. I read where the Central City Register-Call had to use wallpaper to print upon, until a wagon load of newsprint arrived via wagons because of Indian raids. Coors and others came along with beer that quenched the miners’ throats after a hard day, week and month of hard-rock mining. Hard liquor was the drink of the day and needed refrigeration to last a long life—far longer than the men who drank it. No doubt there were some early-day stills located around Gilpin County. Famed Horace Tabor made his fortune selling supplies to the miners in the early Leadville mining boom. Men and women of the Gold Rush

Gemstone & Minerals
The Carmen Lucia ruby
T
he Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History displays one of the world’s largest and finest ruby gemstones called the Carmen Lucia Ruby. The spectacular 23.1 - carat Burmese ruby, set in a platinum ring with diamonds, was donated by businessman and philanthropist Dr. Peter Buck in memory of his wife Carmen Lucia. In the 1930’s a large oval-shaped ruby was mined in the Mogok region of Burma, now known as Myanmar, the classic source of great rubies. This ruby is one of the largest fine faceted Burnese rubies in the world. Burmese rubies are prized for their color. This ruby is a bright red with undertones of pink and purple, a coveted hue known to gem dealers as “pigeon blood red.”
This stone is now known as the Carmen Lucia Ruby. This is the story of this beautiful ruby and the lady it was named after. Who or where the stone was first cut is unclear. It is not known who owned the stone before international gem dealers bought it about 30 years ago. It is not so unusual to have remarkable stones remain in private family vaults. When such a treasure surfaces, it causes a major stir in the gem world. Carmen Buck, born in Brazil, was a collector of jewels, as well as a philanthropist dedicated to medical research. She had learned of the ruby from jeweler Frank Cappiello of Danbury, Conn., who in 2002, had heard that it might be coming on the market after many years in private hands. At

that time, she was fighting cancer and hoped to celebrate a recovery by purchasing the stone. She died in 2003. Carmen’s husband, Dr. Peter Buck is ranked No. 165 in Forbes Magazine’s most wealthy and is worth $1.5 billion. He is a former nuclear scientist and co-owner of the Subway sandwich restaurant chain. On one occasion, Mrs. Buck noticed photos of the ruby on Frank Cappiello’s desk. But Carmen Lucia Buck had recently been diagnosed with cancer and was receiving radiation treatment at the time she saw those photos. Cappiello knew this was not the time to sell jewelry, but the time to simply be a friend. It was only after Mrs. Buck died that Cappiello remembered she liked the ruby. After all, Mrs. Buck was generous with her fortune. She was always giving gifts
to her family and friends. Cappiello recalls that she had built a few hospitals in her hometown of Minas Gerais, Brazil. And when the appropriate time arose, Cap-
piello suggested to Dr. Buck that the ruby, the one his wife had admired, would be a terrific gift to
the American people - if he would consider it. Knowing that his now deceased wife liked the ruby, now set in a platinum ring with another ruby of the same quality and accented with cut diamonds, he decided to buy the ring and donate it to the Smithsonian’s National Gem Collection. When the romantic aura of a ring is combined with the drama of a precious jewel, the effect can be very powerful. It is a token of love that rings are most endearing. Dr. Buck named it the Carmen Lucia Ruby. This ruby is the largest faceted ruby in the museum’s National Gem Collection and is one of the finest Burmese rubies known to exist in the world. “Already,” Dr. Buck said, “the ring has probably been seen by more people than had seen it since it was first unearthed in the 1930s.”

And maybe it’s a coincidence, but ever since my last email service software update, email addresses I’ve deleted continue to show up in my address bar. It’s like having ghosts. Could they be responsible for all the mischief on my computer? Just this morning I hit tab while using the latest, greatest version of Word and instead of the reasonable 10 spaces I usually get, the cursor flew across the page like a pinball. After an embarrassing amount of time during which I could have been doing actual work, I discovered that the tab was now set on four inches. Because I wasn’t sure how I’d changed it, I was hard pressed to change it back.

In a move I couldn’t repeat if I wanted to, I once managed to turn everything on my computer screen on its side. I suppose there’s a good reason why someone might want to view the contents of their screen sideways. But the only way that would be useful to me is if there were room on my desk to lie down. Because I had no idea how I pulled off this amazing feat, I had no idea how to undo it, and I was forced to call someone smarter than me for help. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to find someone like that. A computer person walked me through the several steps it took to return my screen to its normal state, leaving me to
wonder, if it was so much trouble to change it back, how had I managed to change it in the first place without even trying? These issues inevitably arise when I’m nearing a deadline, and I waste far too much time trying to undo what I’m not sure how I did. I don’t believe in ghosts. I blame you—whether it’s your fault or not. You’re the Computer Genius Person. To me, scissors are high tech. Yet, I must do battle daily with spammers, hackers, and unnecessary updates. I’d like to know that you’re on my side. And here’s how you can prove it: Come fix my printer. Mr. Chapman’s brother and son and his wife Gertrude Robinson Chapman were all at his side when he passed on August 4, 1913 at 55 years of age. J.E.’s son Ralph was killed in WWI, and the Chapman family began selling off parcels of the ranch to nearby Morman ranchers. By 1918 all of the ranch had been sold.
