Geoff, a good buddy of mine, came to town last week from the island of Kauai way out on the west side of the Hawaiian Island chain - and one of the first things he wanted to do was to “Get up to those mountain towns.” When I asked why, he looked at me like I was crazy and said, “Mountains and gambling - we gotta go.” Ironically, he is not a regular gambler. So, on his second night here we headed up. I took him up the I - 70 corridor and he marveled at the huge shaggy buffalo near the Genesee exit, the views of the first real mountain range with snow just beyond, and the lushness of the land we were passing. It was a lot of fun to hear as I find myself just driving by most the time, taking it for granted - and not really looking. Well, I sure enjoyed the trip up this time and appreciated it a bit more. My buddy’s flip flops hit the concrete as soon as I parked in the Golden Gates Casino garage and he headed toward the elevator. On the way he dropped a couple of “Mahalo’s” to surprised tourists - leaving them with big smiles. First stop was supposed to be dinner, but we only made it as far as the Blackjack Pit at the Golden Gates Casino and he was gambling, with the dealer changing his $100 bill into red $5 chips. Standing just to the side watching, it was fun to see the excited glow in his eyes, the crispness with which he stacked his chips, and the way he flipped his chip into the betting circle. He was excited. You know, I walk by these blackjack tables almost every time I am in town and hardly notice them. Tonight was different - as I was observing, it was really good to remember why most of the visitors come up to our mountain towns; a bit of gambling; great food, and simply to get away. And - Geoff won. He stood up after a

little more than 20 minutes, and showed me $55 more in red chips than he had started with. His face was glowing and he was moving with a brisk step as we cashed in at the cage and moved on. After a great buffet dinner at the Ameristar Casino, Geoff was ready to try his hand at some low limit poker. Once again, his excitement to sit down at a “Live Table” was something to see. As I observed, he jumped into a $1 - $2 / $100 limit hold em game and played a pretty passive game, waiting to see what would come. He had one interesting hand in which he raised to $30 with pocket Kings in last position and was called by two players - one of which I knew to be a very tight player. The flop came Kh - 4c - As. The tight player immediately bet out $40, the other one folded, and Geoff took about a second and raised to $140. The other player thought for a moment and tossed in his Ah - Qc (top pair and 2nd best kicker) face up. And, yep Geoff took the bait and showed his set of K’s (providing information he did not need to.) A few hands later, Geoff got up a $65 winner, cashed in at the cage and said, with a smile to the floor man, “World Series of Poker, here I come.” Outside, he had already realized his mistake on the big hand. “I should have just called” he said disgustedly - meaning that if he just calls the tight player’s bet of $40 on the flop, he would have won more on the turn and river. “Next time I’ll just call.” Nice to see this lesson learned - and his determination not to do it again. From there we played a bit of roulette, a few “Sex in the City Slots” and he definitely took advantage of the free drinks at every opportunity. Just over 5 hours after we arrived, we jumped back in the truck and headed down. Geoff was $85 richer than when he got there, had learned at least one good poker lesson, and visited with lots of folks. As he was enjoying the breeze coming off the creek through the open window while we were driving down the canyon, he looked over at me and said with a smile, “What a blast - let’s do it again next time I’m here.” My reply - “Absolutely.” Remember - play your game.

The Denver Anti-Chinese Riots of 1880 During the 1880s racial tensions in Denver had been brewing for quite some time. With the strong economy many immigrants came for employment opportunities, competing for jobs that common American laborers were also seeking. Added to this tension were the labor organizers who also wanted to capitalize on the state’s growing economy. Very early on both the Chinese and the Italian immigrants were targeted by labor leaders in the city. Joseph Buchanan, a Denver labor leader, was particularly against the Chinese encroachment into the city, saying that, while he believed in the “Brotherhood of Man,” regarding the Chinese people he believed in “Brotherhood of Limited.” This sort of attitude soon gained favor throughout the city and even in the realm of politics by 1880. In 1880, there were just under 1,000 Chinese immigrants living

within Denver’s city limits. The majority of these immigrants lived in lower downtown, primarily on upper Holladay Street, (the heart of the red light district) north to Twentieth Street. While legitimate businesses did exist, such as laundry services, Chinese markets, and restaurants, there were also several opium dens in the area. The largest concentration of the opium dens were found in the alleys of the 2000 block between Holladay and Blake streets, an area known as Hop Alley. The Rocky Mountain News wrote of the horrible living conditions of the area in the July 15, 1880, issue: “Outhouses, crowded together near the sleeping and eating compartments, their contents overflowing into the yards, filled with piles of ashes, decayed vegetables, chicken feathers and other refuse...a combination of smells the most horrible.”

Also, Gem and mineral clubs in the area usually have geodes and geode hunting field trips. A well-known location with an abundance of geodes is Keokuk, Iowa. Keokuk has more than 300 rock formations in a 100-mile radius around the city where geodes can be found and around 21 different minerals that fill them. The geode was designated the official state rock of Iowa in 1967. The thunder egg geode is the state rock of Oregon. Geodes are found in Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Australia and many areas throughout the continents of the Western Hemisphere.

However, each geode offers a unique glimpse of the beauty and color that nature can generate with the earth’s minerals. How do you open a geode? There are three commonly used ways to open a geode; using a hammer and chisel, cracking them with a pipe cutter, and cut-

pensive: they are called “Bloodstone Geodes.” A short list of other colored geodes include: yellow geodes called “canary geodes,” green geodes which are the least expensive, pink geodes which are the most popular, blue, orange, golden, aqua and the “shiny” geodes which are bright and sparkly. The world’s largest geode was found in Almeria, Spain on June 10, 2000, in an abandoned old silver mine. The geode is 26x6x6 feet and covered on the inside with large gypsum crystals of exceptional transparency. A geologist described the geode as having 2.5-foot crystals, on average, covering the entire floor, walls and ceiling. The gypsum crystals completely covering the interior have a high transparency, so much so that you can read the small print of a book through thick pieces. The unique feature of these prisms is their large size, some reaching about six feet. The formation is said to be about six million years old. crystals and come in various sizes depending on the size of the geode. They may be very tiny in the thunder eggs to several feet long in the gigantic geodes. The crystals may be clear quartz, amethyst, citrine or many other different crystals and many different colors. A secondary crystal is one that forms on top of the primary crystals. Some types of secondary crystals are hematite, fluorite, angel wing calcite, galena and many more. Some crystals will glow under a black light. Geodes are very common throughout the world. Most are hollow with different types and colors of crystals inside them. Many have amethyst crystals inside but there are many that have different colored crystals inside them, which make them very rare and expensive. The prices of the rarest geodes can range from $50,000 to $100,000 each. The reddish geodes are the most ex-

eodes are rounded rocks with hollow cavities inside. Over time the cavity develops crystals. There are many different kinds of geodes. The most common ones are a little larger than a baseball and have quartz or calcite crystals inside them. The natives called them thunder eggs. Others range from thunder egg size to walk-in size from Brazil to a gigantic one in Almeria, Spain, which can fit 10 people inside. Tiny amounts of impurities change the color and appearance of the crystals. Geodes are said to be formed by bubbles in lava. Over time the surrounding minerals penetrate the bubble and crystals begin to form within. The type of crystal that forms inside of a geode is determined by the type of minerals that surrounded it at the time of its formation. The crystals that form inside the geodes are called primary
