Complex grille, CVT highlight 2016 Outlander 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 SEL S-AWC
Hitting showrooms several weeks ago, and lending a boost to a brand that is in need, is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander. Its new grille caught my attention when the Outlander 2.4 SEL S-AWC model, with only a few hundred miles on its odometer, rolled into my driveway. The big grille is shaped somewhat similar to Lexus’ spindle-type front. It, though, has many more parts, a mix of glossy black and chrome slats and bars, some positioned horizontally, some vertically. So many of them that as I continued studying it, I began to wonder what fun it might be to disassemble it, then put it back together. Mitsubishi calls it a “dynamic shield” grille. The Outlander is a seven-passenger vehicle competing with a field of compact crossovers, most of which use only two rows of seats. A direct competitor, which like the Outlander is designed with three rows, is the Kia Sorento. A smaller offering for Mitsubishi is the Outlander Sport, which is a foot shorter than the Outlander and is built with only two rows of seating. A climb up the Big Thompson Canyon was an interesting test for the 3,500-pound Outlander, with its 166-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. The Outlander’s former 6-speed automatic transmission has been replaced with a continuously variable type. Though the powertrain is not overly responsive, stick your foot into it and it will make the climb up the canyon with relative ease, and its CVT acceleration whine is not as exaggerated as some competitors. Those continuously variable

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander outside The Other Side Restaurant in Estes Park. transmissions are becoming more commonplace (I won’t say popular), as a means for some automakers to increase fuel mileages. Of the past 25 cars I’ve driven and reviewed, about a third of them have been CVT-equipped. Kathy and Bill Allen rode with us to The Other Side restaurant at lakeside in Estes Park, where we joined Kim Parker and Keith Brumley, Dale and Sandy Wells, Kurt and Tammy Wells and Brent and Tina Wells for Saturday night dinner. A sport mode setting in the CVT mimicked a lower gear on the descent from Estes to Loveland and the Outlander maintained a nice gait down the canyon, with enough engine braking to avoid following too closely to the heavy traffic
ahead. The S mode keeps the revs higher. The Outlander SEL’s Super-All Wheel Control system, which can shift power between left and right on the front axle with its active front differential, has settings for normal, snow and lock, as well as a mild eco drive. A retuned suspension and stiffened structure for ’16 have improved the handling of the Outlander, particularly through the preponderance of curves up and down the canyon. It’s a quiet cabin; its ride quality, firmed up with the altered suspension, can turn harsh on uneven road surfaces. A noticeable plus for performance of the Outlander is its relatively short turn circle of less than 35 feet.
A total of 250 miles, including the drive up and down the canyon, and a fairly even split of highway and stop-and-go in-city maneuvering produced an average of 25.1 miles per gallon of regular unleaded fuel. The new Outlander’s interior has been dressed up with neatly fitted trim pieces, contrast-stitched leather seating surfaces, gloss black instrument panel, and roomy second-row seating with easy-tofold seats. The third-row seating, though, is cramped beyond use by adults. Cargo space behind the third row is only 10.3 cubic feet; fold the third row and that expands to 33 cubic feet. The Outlander SEL I drove carried a sticker price of $33,095, in-

Getting married? Why not plan a green wedding?
G
etting married? Have a limited budget? Why not plan an eco-friendly green wedding? Many young couples today are now including ecofriendly elements in their events, and the number of green options has multiplied accordingly. It is easier than ever to find vendors who allow young couples to respect the earth and their budgets. As green weddings have moved mainstream, “green” is no longer a wedding theme but an approach to planning. The bride and groom can confer with both sets of parents to establish a budget. Keep things simple. Think about what kind of waste you might be creating and try to eliminate it as much as possible. If the green wedding costs less than budget, the parents may choose to give the couple the extra money afterward. When our daughter and her fiancé went below budget, we gave them the remainder as an extra wedding gift. Here are some tips to help to reduce carbon footprints on the earth and treat your budget kindly.
Eco-friendly invitations
Gone are the days when you sent out an elaborate folded invitation on expensive commercially printed paper in a matching envelope enclosed inside another larger envelope. Instead consider using recycled paper or card stock for a single invitation card that directs wedding guests to your wedding website. You can post details about accommodations, attire, themes, and gift registries on the website. You can even ask guests to RSVP electronically. A wedding website can help keep you organized as all your information is in one place. Picking a place for the wedding and reception Ideally, a green wedding and reception should be in the same place to avoid guests traveling from one place to another. This is not always possible, however. When you choose a church to solemnize your love for each other, you usually can rent an adjoin-

ing church hall at a reasonable rate. Or for the reception, you may be able to get a reduced rate for a hall if a friend or relative belongs to a fraternal organization or lives in a condo or townhouse complex with a clubhouse. If you have a big yard, you may consider renting tents and having the reception in your own back yard.
Choosing attire for the couple and attendants
Now you can rent the attire for the bride and the groom as well as the attendants from bridal and rental shops. Renting can save money and hours of shopping for just the right color, size, and style. Or if you want to buy your own dress, you can donate it afterwards to a charity like the Glass Slipper Project (www. glassslipperproject.org), which makes prom dream of young girls come true. You might consider checking out charities such as Brides Against Breast Cancer (www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.org) where you can buy or donate a dress. All proceeds go to support women with breast cancer.
Flowers and favors
Fall gardens may still have flowers blooming. You can use some of these flowers from your garden or a friend’s and pair these flowers with a few specialty flowers from the florist. When one of our sons got married, our neighbor’s American Beauty red roses were in full splendor, and they let me pick these roses for the backyard reception. Instead of messy confetti, a lovely green ending to your wedding can be giving your guests favors of biodegradable rice packed in white net drawstring bags. Throwing rice is traditional for weddings because it symbolizes fortune and fertility, but it’s dangerous for wildlife and a mess to clean up. Biodegradable wedding rice disintegrates when coming into contact with water. It’s safe for the birds and won’t roll around uncomfortably underfoot. Remember an eco-friendly wedding treats the earth like a special guest.

A float from the first Festival of Mountain and Plain sports a medieval theme.
To bring more celebrants into the city, the railroads reduced round-trip rates to the lowest ever offered. By Oct. 17, 45,000 people had arrived and thousands were still on their way. Streamers in festival colors –white and yellow to represent silver and gold – billowed around every building. In a storefront window at the Denver Dry Goods Co., the figure of a beautiful woman robed in white satin held a horn of plenty, optimistically symbolizing the future of Colorado. For three days, the city went wild. The festival grand parade, called the Pageant of Progress, sported of an army of floats depicting Colorado’s rise from “an indistinguishable section of limitless mountain and plain to a rich commonwealth of widely varied resources, many industries, vast stretches of farm and orchard and great beautiful cities.” The highlight, a huge revolving globe floating on a mass of clouds, was labeled, “Admission of Colorado, 1876.” More than 40 exhibits stationed at City Park “in a vast open air State Fair, Mining Exposition, Horticultural Show and General Manufacturer’s Exhibit.” Even the schools closed during the carnival. Opposite the huge grandstand on Broadway, more than 400 schoolchildren dressed in red, white and blue created a “Living Flag.” Many of them had never seen a real Native American, so a contingent of Utes was imported from Ignacio, complete with warpaint and plumes. The Indian camp was “picturesquely placed in a grove of cottonwoods, to the left of City Park Lake,” according to The Denver Post. Along with the country’s first
Cowboy Band, the Trolley Musicale a unique musical was a popular highlight. Ten trolleys took visitors on moonlight tours accompanied by a band stationed in each car. On the second night of the festival, an illuminated bicycle parade featuring “a band on tandems” and 2,500 participants brought huge crowds downtown again. While musicians played in the front seat, a rider in the rear propelled the bicycles. The popular event continued annually through 1899, when costs got out of hand with the addition of a state fair, agricultural display and a horse show. Colorado took a year off, followed by another jamboree in 1901. The last festival in 1912 was the hottest of them all. In an obvious attempt to show off the fire department, the festival included the mock “burning of the new Daniels and Fishers Tower,” and a fireworks display that set an old warehouse ablaze with a fireball shot from the dome of the State Capitol. The party concluded with “the burning of City Park Lake,” when thousands of gallons of oil poured on the lake were set on fire, “transforming the lake into the appearance of a vast uncovered furnace.” For some reason, financial support for another festival would be unavailable after that. The State Fair moved to Pueblo, where it has remained ever since. In 1985, in the midst of another statewide Depression brought on by Colorado’s collapsed oil industry (Will we never learn?), the Festival of Mountain and Plain re-emerged as The Taste of Colorado. Today’s fandango is held on Labor Day weekend,

when good weather and large crowds are likely. The Taste is mostly about food, highlighting more than 50 top restaurants and a fine dining area with gourmet cuisine and cooking demonstrations. Music keeps the action going, with five stages that feature entertainment ranging from country and classic rock. A kids’ stage for the little ones offers children’s entertainment, as do carnival booths, games and rides. A pussycat in retrospect, however, “The Taste,” wisely sticks to food, art and entertainment. Since the population of Denver has exploded since 1895 (and 1995), there are no plans to set buildings on fire, although locals might be tempted by some of the aesthetically challenging new construction downtown. Even a booming economy has its drawbacks.

I raised to $120 when the bet came to me and the two players behind me folded - leaving just two of us playing for the nearly $1,500 pot. The river came a Qh and I bet, he called and turned over his pockets K’s - losing to my two pair of J’s and 9’s. After stacking, I was up over $1,500 – in the very first hand! He of course, raised to $180 and I just called the bet as it looked like he had the flush but I still had a chance at a full house. The river came a 9d and I checked. He bet $60, and I called – losing the hand as he turned over the nut flush, As 10s. This hand cost me around $450. After that hand I racked up and heading to the cashier, ending up just $42 ahead for the day. And - I know deep down I was up nearly $1,500 for a few minutes work and had lost $1,450 of it back because I stayed. I know this game is a game of ebbs and flows and my gut, head, and heart told me to get up and head down the hill with that nice, quick win after the first hand – but I didn’t and it cost me a good win. Chalk one up for experience! Lesson – “Get up and go” next time. Remember - play your game!

We had just begun a new $30 - $60 ½ kill hold em game in the BY Ameristar LARRY Casino JOHNSON P o k e r Room and I was the big blind. It was the first hand and by the time the betting was finished it was $120 with six callers for a total of just over $700 in the pot before the flop. I had Js - 9s and decided since I was already in for $30 I would complete the call and see which direction the wind was blowing. The flop came Jh - 4s - 5s, giving me top pair and a nice spade flush draw. Once again the betting went through the roof and it hit $120 with 4 callers seeing the turn - now with
With a flop of Kc - Qh - 4s giving me 2 pair, I quickly bet out $30 with the player behind me raising immediately. One other player called and I reraised to $90 with the raiser capping the betting at $120. I put him on a big King or some sort of straight draw - hopefully not a set! The turn brought a Js and the player bet out again. At this point I just called along with the other player. The river brought a 3s, the player bet and I called with the player behind raising. After a moment, the original player called and I let my hand go with it costing me nearly $300. The player who raised turned over the Ks - 7s; he had caught the running flush and the win. A few hands later brought me pocket Kings (Kd - Kc) while I was in the blind and I raised to the hilt to $120 with 4 players seeing the flop. big win? As I had just had the big blind, I figured I had a few hands to decide. Two hands later I woke up to an Ac - Kc and when the betting came to me, raised to $90 and four of us saw the flop. The flop came Ad - Qc - 7c and I had top pair with the top kicker and the nut flush draw. A player bet out in front of me, I raised, and the others folded. The original raiser pushed the bet to $90 and I took it to $120 as I had a huge draw even if he flopped two pair. The turn and river came blanks with him betting each round. On the river he turned over a Qh - 7s for two pair and won the hand. This hand cost me just under $400. Then, as I had decided to stay another round, the dealer dealt me pocket 10’s, it was only $30, and I called. The flop brought three low cards and I bet, was raised, and called all the way down as no over cards came, losing to a set of 3’s. This hand cost me just over $200. A few hands later I looked down to Kd - Qd and called $30 along with six other players.
