Cherry Creek High School student Shala Perez, front, whose parents came from Mexico, discusses her emotional reasons for taking part in last week’s walkout as her fellow students cheer in support. Cherry Creek students walk out, protest Trump decision “No hate. No fear. Immigrants are welcome here.” So chanted more than 70 of the estimated 150 Cherry Creek High School students who walked out of classes Aug. 8 to protest President Trump’s decision last week to phase out an Obama-era program that protects from deportation nearly 800,000 immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children. “We support immigrants. We condemn racism. We
support DACA,” student Chris Williams said to applause in a brief speech to protesters. Shala Perez, a U.S. citizen whose parents came from Mexico, became emotional when asked why it was important to leave classes in protest of the action. “We need people to understand the struggles of immigrants, how they’re not accepted in today’s society,” she said. “… My mom sent me to school. She’s struggling at work each and every day to send me to school, put clothes on my back, put food in my stomach.” On Sept. 5, Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, announced the Trump administration would rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals over the next six months, leaving the permanent legal fate of so-called “Dreamers” to Congress. Cliona Bennett, a CCHS student from South Africa who moved here two years ago, saw the decision as disrespectful to well-intentioned young immigrants. “My parents are really working their ass off for this country, so this is honestly just disgusting to me,” she said. This group of stu-
dents, whose march circled around the CCHS campus, traveling down Union Avenue and around a nearby King Soopers, constituted one of several protests that occurred simultaneously in Cherry Creek Schools. In this case, a few school officials, some in a golf cart, followed the marchers, directing them to stay on passable walkways and remain safe from traffic as they marched through parking lots and across residential streets. Abbe Smith, spokeswoman for the school district, said it was important to ensure both the wellbeing and the free speech of the students involved. “In Cherry Creek, we value student voice,” she said. “We very much respect the rights of our students to express themselves freely. We also acknowledge the potential safety concerns associated with students leaving school during the day, which is why we had some security out there just monitoring the situation.” Students from three other high schools—Smoky Hill, Grandview and Eagle Crest—in the Cherry Creek system also participated in the coordinated protests, for an estimated total of about 500 students, Smith said. Some of the 150 CCHS students reportedly splintered into a separate protest near Cherry Creek Reservoir. The marches followed similar actions by students in Denver Public Schools earlier in the week. It remained unclear at press time if students would be disciplined for leaving classes.

Bullock runs for re-election in Greenwood Village Greenwood Village City Councilmember Dave Bullock has announced he will seek re-election for a second term representing District 1. Bullock was one of three councilmembers to publicly oppose a proposed controversial amendment to the city’s Comprehensive Plan that would have opened the door
to a high-density, transit-oriented development. He also lobbied to send the issue to a public referendum, which he worked to successfully defeat in June. “During the past year, over 80 percent of all resident feedback strongly opposed the changes to the Comp Plan,” Bullock said. “To any-
one who was listening, the results of this election should have been of no surprise. That is one of the primary reasons why I voted no.” The referendum vote has been considered just one step in a long process of redeveloping what has been called the Orchard Station Subarea west of I-25. Bullock stresses that his position was not one of being anti-development. “I am for responsible development, and I will always vote in favor of limiting height, density and mix-use, all of which will have a direct impact on traffic congestion,” he said. “The reason I am running for a second term is to continue to preserve and protect the unique character of Greenwood Village.” Fellow Councilmember Steve Moran said, “Dave believes strongly that it is the responsibility of councilmembers to listen to those who live in their district and represent their values. There are still many decisions that council will make in the fu-
Dave Bullock ture. Residents in District 1 can be assured that Dave will be their voice.” During Bullock’s time on council, he has served on an intergovernmental Highline Canal Committee dedicated to preserving the valued recreation and open-space amenity. Prior to council, he served four years on the Greenwood Village Planning and Zoning Commission.
For more than three decades, Bullock worked in the financial-services and investment-management industry, where he was the CEO of three multi-billiondollar companies—Transamerica Capital, Old Mutual Capital and ING Funds Distributor. He also served as the president of three public boards and has been active in community affairs, including Boy Scouts of America. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University. Bullock has been married to his wife Kathy for 38 years. They have five married children and nine grandchildren. They have lived in Greenwood Village’s District 1 for 28 years. “I don’t think about my position on City Council as being in politics,” the candidate said. “I look upon this as my community service and giving back to a Village that we love and cherish, a place where we raised our family and have made life-long friendships.”

Change the law to protect ‘Dreamers’
I’m a supporter of the so-called Dreamers, an estimated 800,000 undocumented youths who were brought here by their parents who entered the country illegally or overstayed their work visas. First, the parents. It is hard to fault immigrants of any race or country who want to come to America. We are still the home of the brave and the land of the free with economic opportunities for all who want to work and become U.S. citizens. The vast majority of the parents came to clean hotel rooms, wash the dishes, clean homes or work in construction, roofing and road construction. These have been hard-working immigrants who have helped build our homes and apartments, picked the fruit and vegetables for our tables and provided sweat equity for America. They did this hard labor to raise their families, put food on the table and see that their children were able to go to American schools and colleges. There is no mandatory education in Mexico, while the United States requires children by law to enter schools The legal visa program to enter the United States has been slow, clumsy, ill managed and inefficient for decades under both political parties. Political leaders have been talking about fixing illegal immigration during campaigns, but nothing has been accomplished. Many people agree that the borders of the United States should be tightened and toughened to stop illegal immigration and stem the huge number of drugs being smuggled into the United States. This high demand for drugs has reached epidemic heights, menacing our society far more than hard-working emigrants seeking work to raise their families. These parents have made great sacrifices to see these Dreamers have a better life. Their dream is to see their children be educated and not have to perform the hard labor done by their mothers and fathers. This is admirable and part of the American dream of success stories that we admire and respect. Yes, the laws have been broken and need to be fixed. President Trump is doing the right thing in asking Congress to increase border security, build walls and slow the illegal flow of drugs and people. Statistics show that during this brief period of time illegal ac-

I spent most of Sunday afternoon glued to CNN, the Weather Channel and Fox watching Hurricane Irma swirl into Florida. Writing this column later in the evening, it appears that Florida has catastrophic damage and will face massive power outages, major cleanup and housing challenges for flooded residents. Overall, it appears that from the White House down to those hearty broadcasters on the streets of Naples and Fort Myers that Florida will fare better than anticipated. The Trump administration can take a bow for quick response from FEMA, the Coast Guard and the National Guard. Thanks to first-responders, state and local law officers, mayors and the media for great attention to these life-threatening storms in Texas and Florida. Politics has been set aside and neighbors have been helping neighbors to save lives and property.
tivity has dropped a reported 78 percent without a wall, but with stringent enforcement of the borders and our laws. Attorney General Jeff Sessions declared last week that DACA was being rescinded and gave a detailed explanation in his opinion that it had been an unconstitutional act by President Obama without the approval of Congress. He said he was going to enforce the law as written. But because of interest and compassion for Dreamers by President Trump, the president extended the program for six months to give Congress an opportunity to approve a new legal and constitutional program. I believe Congress should act immediately and give relief and a path to citizenship for all Dreamers who want to stay in the United States and become legal citizens. This clears up their status forever and they will no longer have to fear deportation. Lawsuits filed against this proposal are very apt to fail, but they might delay any deportations while the lawsuit makes its way to the Supreme Court. But the Dreamers are in limbo and living a life of uncertainty. Trump and Sessions are on the right track to solve this issue once and for all in the Congress of the United States. Congressman Mike Coffman has been a fierce defender of DACA and was going to challenge any adverse decisions, but now will join the fight in Congress to make these Dreamers legal citizens. Lastly, we still have an estimated 11 million illegal emigrants living and working in the United States. First, let’s take care of the Dreamers and make them legal citizens. Secondly, register all of the 11 million people and give those who wish to become legal citizens a path to citizenship. Any person who does not register should be returned to their country of origin. This will take time and the success depends upon closing the borders and stemming the tide of those who want to live in the best country in the world. We are the best because we have a Constitution and we abide by the rule of law. Attorney General Sessions and President Trump understand this and Congress must now do its job and change the law. They should be supported in this action, not criticized.
Ramblin’ around the corral with Bob Sweeney
Refreshing to see and remind us all that we are all Americans. *** Interesting to see a new political coalition that developed in Washington last week with President Trump making a deal with Democrats and middle-of-the-road Republicans to raise the debt ceiling for 90 days and approve immediate emergency funding for Texas. Good work on getting something done! The Freedom Caucus members couldn’t prevail to stop this new coalition and we may see more of this deal making in future months. This same method may be used to enact new “Dreamer” legislation and go even further with tax reform. *** On the home front, the Greenwood Village Planning and Zoning Commission turned down a proposal for new homes on 13 acres of land owned by Century Homes on a 7-1 vote.
Opponents of new single-family housing appeared before the commission and proclaimed that the vote on the “Subarea” was a Village mandate against single-family housing and increased traffic on Village streets. The land-use proposal will still be on the Greenwood Village City Cuncil agenda at the October session. More to come on this issue. *** Cliff Dodge, former speaker of the house and venerable GOP leader in Arapahoe County, has moved to Venice, Fla. Arriving just in time for Irma to greet him. Maybe this will encourage Cliff to return to his home base of Colorado. We miss you, Cliff! *** Walked around a historic cattle coral on the Aurora-owned Hayden ranch this past week on the Aurora Water tour. Denver and Aurora water departments have done a yeoman’s job of obtaining water for the growth along the Front range. Withstanding severe drought years, there appears to be adequate water for cities of Aurora and Centennial, water districts and others stretching into Douglas County’s new developments. Aurora Water has done an outstanding job of building community relationships in Chaffee and Lake counties by giving back land parcels for public fishing, recreation and preservation while obtaining precious water rights from area ranch purchases. See stories and photos on pages 12-13. *** Cherry Hills Village will hold a public study session on traffic Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the council chambers. A total eclipse of productivity and other bright spots of modern life LEFT UNEDITED
A few random thoughts in the aftermath of some recent stories in The Villager. In the wake of our coverage of the recent solar eclipse, I came across an analysis by Chicago-based Challenger, Gray & Christmas—and its postmortem was no present under the tree. According to the firm, which specializes in helping workers make transitions in their careers, this slacker of a celestial event cost U.S. employers a collective $694 million in lost productivity. Did you get an “involuntary transition” in your career for taking an unproductive glimpse outside? Challenger figures it took you about 22 minutes to watch the thing, if one counts fumbling with equipment and the dilly dallying that often goes with such unofficial goings-on. Yeah, a whopping 22 minutes. I had radio jobs that lasted longer than that.
Although I didn’t time my viewing with a stopwatch, I actually walked outBY PETER side several times JONES to take a quick peak and didn’t notice any particular lax in my daily work. What’s more, I wrote this column about the thing. Those 22 minutes might have even been a moneymaker. With the wear and tear on my eyes and shoes, could a tax deduction be in the offing? Turn around, Bright Eyes.
*** In last week’s Villager, we recognized the 40th anniversary for Shiou Yun Wang and her Twin Dragon restaurant in Englewood. In the story, I mentioned that this ChineseAmerican perennial had entertained “rock stars,” but I did not have space to elaborate. As it happened, I had dinner there with a rock star there, myself, in the mid-1990s when I worked for
Colorado Public Radio and Mike Pinder, the original keyboardist for the Moody Blues, was in town promoting his new solo CD. On the first night, Pinder and his wife took me to the now-defunct McCormick’s in LoDo before we sat down for an extensive interview in his downtown hotel room. Pinder stressed that he lived in a regular neighborhood with regular teenage kids and seldom ate in expensive restaurants—but what the hell, let’s eat. He paid. The next night, I met the Pinders again at the Twin Dragon, this time for a special event with members of the local Moody Blues fan club. Turns out nights in white satin go well with crab-cheese wontons. Dutch treat, Cantonese style. Years later, I had Pinder on a radio show in a bizarre Valentine’s Day roundtable on love with fellow panelist Gloria Leonard, an “adult film” actress/director, as well as a local poet and a lovelorn local stage actress/ director. It was my own sort
of stab at Bill Maher’s nowdefunct Politically Incorrect. *** Speaking of musicians, my recent column adding a new verse to songwriter Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” took on a life of its own in the Twitterverse as it circulated among Mitchell and Judy Collins fans, and oddly enough, commentators on the racial turmoil in Charlottesville, Va. For those who don’t know, “Both Sides Now” takes a simultaneously balanced and perplexed view on clouds, love and life itself. I added a verse about the inherent complications of felines. “I’ve looked at cats from both sides now …” In response, someone emailed a Facebook post to me titled “Joni Mitchell vs.
Alt-White,” which rewrote the song in a parody of President Trump’s initial “both sides” reaction to the riots. None of it was clever enough to quote here, but it was interesting to see Mitchell’s lyrical idea find yet another offbeat home. Lastly, a few words about the squeaky chair of our co-worker, award-winning designer and production manager, Tom McTighe. As he rocked back and forth in his headphones recently, Becky Osterwald, our managing editor, and I listened intently to the music. I swear we heard a key change. Beautiful. I’ve looked at squeaky office chairs from both sides now. - peter@villagermedia group.com
A salute to American labor unions
While celebrating Labor Day last week, my wife and I paused to reflect on why this day off is so special. Labor Day honors the American labor movement and the contributions workers have made in providing the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of this nation. With the growth of the industrial age in the 1900s, American labor began its fight to organize into unions to improve working conditions in factories, negotiate a 40-hour workweek and help establish child-labor laws. In response to the Pullman strike in Chicago in 1894,
which resulted in the death of striking workers by the Army and U.S. marshals, Congress passed legislation to establish Labor Day as a federal holiday. Since the early beginning of the labor movement, America has seen a significant growth in unions, reaching its highest levels of membership in the 1960s when nearly 60 percent of all American workers belonged to an organized union. Today, that figure has dropped to 12 percent of all workers in the United States. The decline of union membership can be tied to the decrease in manufacturing jobs, states implementing right-to-
work laws allowing nonunion workers into unionized shops, and active campaigns by business leaders and politicians to discourage workers from joining unions. The American labor movement has successfully improved working conditions for all Americans by fighting for the eight-hour workday, the five-day workweek, health benefits for workers and their families, collective bargaining, safety measures to protect workers and equality in the workplace. The American worker owes a great debt to those who fought for worker rights and their dignity. Without the American labor movement and the creation of unions, none of the fruits of our labor would be realized. We thank you, American labor.

‘Together We Rise’ in Democratic values Annual dinner held for Arapahoe County party BY BECKY OSTERWALD MANAGING EDITOR Democratic values and inclusiveness were the main course during the 11th annual Arapahoe County Democratic Pat Schroeder Dinner Sept. 9 in Aurora. The menu included speeches from various candidates and a keynote address from Dr. Nita Mosby-Tyler, who among other things is the chief catalyst and founder of the Equity Project, which is “designed to support organizations and communities in building diversity, equity and inclusion strategies.” During her address to the party faithful, Mosby-Tyler said Americans are in a complicated time in history because there can be love and hate sitting the same room. The Democrats too are in an interesting time, she said, because the party is about unity,
but at the same time “we are also about multi-culturalism— that is about differences,” she added. Mosby-Tyler said she has a dream that eventually everyone would feel they could be included in the democratic process without fear. She shared several sayings from her family members and related them to expanding the Democratic Party. One quote from her grandfather was that members of the party need to stop talking “at others with an agenda” so they can “keep teaching and reaching” about values of inclusiveness. Instead of focusing on the strategy to win and beat others, party members need to be focused on excellence. Her grandfather used to spell justice as “j-u-s-t us.” In summing up, Mosby-Tyler reminded the party faithful of the 20-80-20 rule. Twenty percent of the people will always be with you; 80 percent of the people will be on the fence;
and 20 percent will always be against you “even if you are passing out $100 bills.” Instead of spending time on the 20 percent that will always oppose Democrats, spend the time on the 80 percent to expand the party, she said. Among other notable comments was by Levi Tillemann, one of candidates for the Democratic nomination in the 6th Congressional District. He said the GOP is now two statehouses away from being able to call a Continental Convention that could overturn numerous progressive laws and policies. He called Arapahoe County a microcosm of the United States because of its diversity. Mario Solis-Marich, emcee for the evening, spoke of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, suspended last week by President Trump. “Dreamers are the future of this country. Even Cory Gardner gets it. I guess it is true, even a stopped clock is right twice a day,” he said.

Adlai Stevenson Award — Carl Dixon, although never elected to office, has been active in the party and helped elect numerous Democratic politicians. Democrat of the Year — State Rep. Dominique Jackson, as a freshman representative, came out with a plan for what she wanted to work on and was able to pass her first bill, allowing sexual-assault victims to get out of their leases, in April. She told the overflowing crowd that when someone wins an award like Democrat of the Year, it is a tribute to the entire party. She also urged everyone to not be divisive within the party. Mentor of the Year (from the Young
Democrats) — Hashim Coates said he needed to leave everyone the passion and desire to fight the good fight and understand they must be the beacon to not only those trying to reach the shore, but also to those who are on land that might be rallied to defend it. He added that fighters cannot quit because “you never know who you might inspire.” Volunteers of the Year — Vita LantzBrown and Kristin Mallory Westerberg Rising Star — Jessica CampbellSwanson. Viva the intersection! Partners ‘taco ‘bout’ progress on I-25 and Arapahoe
A gift bag passed out on Arapahoe Road last week said everything about the longawaited, but ongoing redesign at the street’s nearby intersection with I-25. “We’ve got a stress reliever. We’ve got lollipops because construction sucks,” said Lauren Masias, the director of community engagement for Denver South Economic Development Partnership, which has driven the project to the onramp and beyond. Dig a little deeper into the bag and you might even find an air freshener “to help cleanse your senses as you maneuver through construction,” a handout explained. Last week’s “Taco Thursday” in the parking lot outside El Tapatio restaurant near the interchange was an opportunity for leading partners Denver South and the Colorado Department of Transportation to thank area businesses, residents and whoever else happened to drive by for their patience and support during the years-long $66 million project. “If you remember, cars used to back up on I-25 going southbound,” said Bob Wilson, CDOT’s communications manager. “People would be driving 60 mph and come up on stopped traffic. That’s been eliminated. Now we have three left-turn lanes.” Although an afternoon of free tacos—hashtag #tacos— was partly in celebration of the new normal [at least on the Arapahoe Road end of the construction], the thoroughfare shared by Centennial and Greenwood Village is not technically out of the traffic jam yet. Arapahoe’s final eastbound

alignment was slated for completion this week, and the road will be briefly closed for repaving later this month, Wilson cautioned. Then comes the remaining work on I-25, involving some late-night lane closures, before the entire project finally hits the exit ramp next summer. More tacos then, perhaps? “It’s going to be very exciting. It’s going to be a vast improvement,” Masias said. “Our mission is to improve connectivity to and from the Denver South corridor, as well as enhance the connectivity within it.” The project is on time and on budget, the officials emphasized. The nonprofit Denver South has served as a sort of umbrella organization for the reconfiguration, along with CDOT and a range of other interested intergovernmental partners, including the cities of Centennial and Greenwood
Village, Arapahoe County and the Federal Highway Administration. The intersection was long considered among the most congested in the metro area and has been a focus in local politics since at least the incorporation of Centennial in 2001. The widely supported project includes an additional lane along westbound Arapahoe from Yosemite Street to Greenwood Plaza Boulevard, three left-turn lanes from the I-25 off-ramps, realignment of the frontage road in the northeast quadrant of the interchange, noise walls near the intersection of Arapahoe and Yosemite, and the partial widening of Yosemite. As all that work has gone on in the neighborhood, Masias says partnering with the cooperating local businesses, such as El Tapatio, Target and Dairy Queen, has been a pleasure.
“Everyone has been tolerant and patient. Everyone has been really eager to work with us,” she said. Two of the most interested parties—the cities of Centennial and Greenwood Village— are both pleased to finally see a light at the end of tunnel. “I’m thrilled at the excellent progress that has been made here and how this project will make people’s lives better,” Greenwood City Councilmember Freda Miklin said. ber C.J. Whelan, a candidate for mayor, noted that transportation issues, and the Arapahoe/I-25 interchange in particular, have always rated high in resident polls on what should be the city’s priorities. “This is a main corridor that serves both our citizens and businesses and this improvement is going to help dramatically,” he said. “We’ve been looking forward to this for a long time.”

Flows in the South Platte River below Chatfield Reservoir will increase, thanks to a successful pledge drive by The Greenway Foundation, in partnership with Denver Water. The pledge drive, announced by The Greenway Foundation in August of 2016, successfully reached its goal of matching Denver Water’s commitment of nearly $2 million to purchase 250 acre-feet of environmental storage in Chatfield Reservoir, for a total of 500 acre-feet. The Chatfield Reallocation Project, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado Water Conservation Board are already planning an environmental pool to provide up to 1,600 acre-feet of storage, and Denver Water saw an opportunity to add to it. “The many generous supporters who stepped up to meet our funding challenge is a testament to the importance of an environmentally healthy South Platte River to the continued vibrancy of the Denver metropolitan area,” said Denver Water CEO Jim Lochhead. “We applaud the leadership, vision and tremendous effort by The Greenway Foundation, and welcome our new funding partners and other leaders in revitalizing the South Platte corridor.” The environmental pool will be operational after the completion of the Chatfield Reallocation Project, and will release water into the South Platte River to benefit the environment and recreation along the urban corridor through Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Weld counties, as well as agriculture downstream of the metro area. “Nearly all great cities are located along, and defined
by, a major waterway,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. “Denver is no exception. The South Platte River is a central feature of our landscape, and we are committed to keeping it flowing throughout the year for the benefit and enjoyment of all of our residents.” The additional flows will be released through Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s fish hatchery at Chatfield Reservoir, helping to grow fish for stocking purposes — a huge win, according to Denver Trout Unlimited. “Denver Trout Unlimited is honored to support the Chatfield Environmental Pool in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect and enhance the recreational benefits of the South Platte River,” said Scott Schreiber, president of Denver Trout Unlimited. “This project benefits our ecosystem, especially the aquatic life that will now flourish as a result of these additional flows.” The 500-acre-foot environmental pool is owned by the Colorado Water Conservation Board. The water rights to fill the pool will come from Central Colorado Water Conservancy District, which will also fund the operations and maintenance of the pool and capture and use the water for agricultural purposes downstream of Denver. “We are happy to be part of this project,” said Weld County Commissioner Chair Julie Cozad. “Our economy is dependent on agricultural activity throughout our county, in addition to our growing economic areas of energy, technology and manufacturing. All of these economic sectors are dependent upon water resources, and they will continue to depend on them in the future.
This added water resource will allow continuation of economic growth, while still maintaining our strong agricultural heritage.” The Greenway Foundation reached the goal thanks to 19 pledges. “The Greenway Foundation has championed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enhance stream flows in the South Platte River as a model of innovative water management practices,” said Jeff Shoemaker, executive director of The Greenway Foundation. “This generational opportunity provides multiple benefits to our river, be it river health or recreational enhancement. By participating in the environmental pool, the metro Denver water community has recognized the lasting impact that increased stream flows will have for the future of our South Platte River.” A special thank you to all donors who helped secure this victory for the environment, including: • City and County of Denver • Walton Family Foundation • Adams County • Arapahoe County • Weld County • Gates Family Foundation • City of Englewood • City of Littleton • Urban Drainage and Flood Control District • South Suburban Parks and Recreation • The Greenway Foundation • The Colorado Parks Foundation • The Shoemaker Family • Denver Trout Unlimited • City of Sheridan • Columbine Valley • South Metro Land Conservancy • Capitol Representatives • Evan and Kim Ela

Lexus LX 570 boasts 383 horsepower BY H. THROTTLE AUTO COLUMNIST The “atomic silver” Lexus LX-570 SUV was the test car this week that captured my attention and that of many interested neighbors. This cool vehicle has a suggested list price of $89,360, along with additional options to a final price of $97,196. The extras included rear-seat dual-screen entertainment systems. Assembled in Aichi, Japan, the craftsmanship of leather, chrome and genuine wood trim make this a luxurious eight-passenger allwheel-drive vehicle. The LX-570 is a large vehicle built to work and pull a boat or trailer. It has a spacious rear cargo area with power rear-lid lift. Twentyinch wheels with five-spoke polished graphite rims add to the ride and powerful appearance. This vehicle presents a 383-horsepower engine capable of 403 pounds of torque, almost twice the power of popular four-cylinder engines. The transmission is
the Lexus/Toyota eight-speed sequential transmission with the full-time four-wheel drive. There are three drive modes of eco, comfort and sport that influence the fuel economy of the thirsty V8 engine, which averaged 13 mpg in the city, 18 on the highway and a disappointing average of 15 overall. Safety is prime consideration with the vehicle. The LX 570 has first and secondrow seat-mounted side airbags and advanced dual-stage seat supplemental restraint system, as well as all of the latest Lexus safety equipment and SST that will stop the vehicle from striking a forward object. During the test drive, I had a white Suburban pull out from a stop sign and the LX-570 system hit the brakes as my foot reached the brake pedal. The new safety systems, such as radar cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, really make for safer driving. Lexus/Toyota has taken a lead in safety features. The ride is soft and comfortable with spacious
interior. The manual drive is assisted by paddle shifting located on the steering wheel. The center console is computer driven with a handcontrol pad for screen control. There is a voice-control option for navigation and phone controls. What I liked best about this vehicle was the size and stature, a power-drive offering and a strong, safe feeling behind the wheel. Drawbacks would be the price compared to other allwheel drive choices, the low fuel mileage with 13 mpg, and the gas tank label requesting premium fuel only. Lastly, the eco choice greatly reduced power, which was an effort to economize on fuel consumption, but the end result is poor performance in that mode. The sport mode was by far the best mode, and the surge of power from the 383 horsepower was worth the extra cost of gasoline. This is a major investment for a distinctive driver who desires quality, safety and performance over price.
Man arrested in shooting during home invasion A 48-year-old man was arrested last week in connection to an early-morning home invasion in Englewood in which a man was seriously injured by a gunshot. Kenneth Tafoya was tak-
en into custody Sept. 5, the day after the incident, and charged with first-degree murder. The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. on Sept. 4 in the 3400 block of South Lincoln Street when a suspect entered through the front door and shot a man inside the house.
The shooting victim, in his mid-50s, was taken to Swedish Medical Center in critical condition. A female inside the home was not injured. The condition of the man was not known at press time. The suspect fled before police arrived.

tries to protect oneself. If this happens occasionally, couples can get to a place of forgiveness and closeness. If it becomes habitual, it is deadly to a relationship. Individuals become armed and dangerous, getting ready for the ensuing attack and counterattack. The cycle escalates until withdrawal and disengagement appears to be the only option. If one member of the couple wants to win the argument so the other can lose, both people lose and the relationship suffers. The way to stop this cycle is to not look for winners and losers. Dr. Johnson encourages
her readers to stop, identify the cyclic nature of the negative conversation, get a hold of the emotional train running off the track, take a time out and come back refreshed willing to express true feelings of hurt, fear and sadness. Being vulnerable when one is wounded and ready for a fight takes courage and commitment. One strategy to combat this if to ask couples to literally stand shoulder to shoulder to face and identify the problem, rather than letting the problem come between them. Stay on the same team. Fight the hurt, sadness and in-
security, not each other. When these types of cycles take hold, kindness needs to make its grand entrance. Kindness is defined as gentleness, benevolence, courtesy, goodwill, graciousness, patience, sweetness, tenderness, tolerance, understanding, consideration, thoughtfulness and helpfulness. What if all relationships had kindness show up in a major way? Think about how it would transform relationships. A free-flowing tour through Aurora Water
Supply is secure for Front Range growth
There is not any surface water that originates in Arapahoe County, so water is supplied to the metro area by two governmental organizations, Aurora Water and Denver Water. Both of these governmental entities have vast water storage and water rights in our mountain ranges. There are also other water providers in Arapahoe County that purchase water for redistribution or have their own groundwater rights. Three of them are Arapahoe County Water and Wastewater Authority, East Cherry Creek Valley Water and Sanitation District and Rangeview Metropolitan District. Aurora Water recently hosted its seventh water tour of selected facilities, starting at the Binney Water Purification Facility next to the Aurora Reservoir. The event lasted for two days and covered 178 miles through South Park, portions of the Upper Arkansas Conservancy District and the Upper South Platte River System. The group visited Spinney Mountain Reservoir, the largest Aurora water-storage reservoir, located 23 miles southeast of Fairplay in South Park. Water rights in the South Platte River Basin are stored in Spinney Mountain Reservoir for subsequent release to Strontia Springs Reservoir and then to Rampart reservoir and delivery to Aurora by gravity flow. Water in Spinney is imported from the Arkansas River and Colorado River Basins via the massive Otero Pump Station located eight miles north of Buena Vista. Water is diverted to the pump station from the Homestake pipeline trans-basin diversion. Homestake diverts water from Homestake Creek into the reservoir. This is a cooperative effort with Colorado Springs, which sends water to Turquoise Lake through the 28,500-foot-long Homestake tunnel shared equally by both cities. In order to achieve gravity, flow from Homestake water must be pumped up 1,100 feet and sent to Colorado Springs by pipeline with a 50 percent diversion “tee” to Spinney Reservoir for delivery to Strontia Springs Reservoir and finally to Aurora Water. This reservoir is located six miles upstream from the mouth of Waterton Canyon and is owned by Denver Water, with Aurora leasing water-storage rights. There is also the smaller Rampart Reservoir system and dam located in Douglas County near Waterton Canyon that is filled by a pipeline and tunnel from Strontia Springs. Aurora has purchased water in the lower Arkansas River Basin, has water rights in the Rocky Ford ditch and the Colorado canal, and leases 10,000 acre-feet of storage in Pueblo reservoir. This water right is transferred up to Twin Lakes near Buena Vista through the use of a water-exchange agreement and then sent to the Otero pump station. A series of pipelines moves this fresh mountain water to Rampart Reservoir and then through a series of pipelines to Aurora’s three water-purification facilities at Quincy and Aurora reservoirs. Final destination is to your faucets, showers, bathtubs and lawns.

stroy the unwanted contaminants from the wastewater. This is one of the most advanced water-purification processes in the country and can treat 50 million gallons of water every day. Adjacent to the Binney site is crystalclear mountain water that is transported for miles, but is of high quality and much easier to purify at less expense then Prairie Water. Bottom line is that Aurora Water has both options of adequate mountain water and wastewater in meeting present and future water demands and is prepared for future emergencies and Fifty participants gathered at the drought conditions. Aurora Water works closely with the Lake County commissioners on land use and various successful arrangements with Colorado Mountain College, Bureau of Land Management and other groups in mountain conservation and education. Aurora Water has established a good relationship with governmental agencies and appears to have been generous and cooperative as they remove private property for public use from county tax rolls. This has been a long-standing issue in rural Colorado, but Aurora Water appears to have been well received, at least in Lake and Chaffee counties.

September 14, 2017 • THE VILLAGER | PAGE 23 The semi-oval building— variously likened to an onion or an egg—marked its silver anniversary last week, as its current owner, Community Banks of Colorado, welcomed historians, business and political leaders, kitsch tourists and anyone else with passing interest to board the spaceship. “We even had someone who drove by this for 50 years—and they said this is my first time [inside] this bank,” said Randy Penn, executive director of the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce, whose offices are on the building’s second floor. The eye-catching conversation piece, located in Englewood at the intersection of Broadway and Hampden Avenue, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places last year. The recent attention comes as Englewood establishes its first city-sponsored historical-preservation commission to keep a watchful eye on remaining landmarks. “I think it’s clear that this bank is the centerpiece of our town,” said Diane Wray Tomasso, a longtime Englewood resident and a historic-preservation consultant who worked to get the bank building a place on a registry. “I originally listed the house up in Genesee in 2004 and at the time said the bank’s got to be next. It took a few years, but here we are.” That similarly-designed “sculptured house,” also crafted by Deaton, earned international fame in 1973 when it figured prominently, among other Colorado locales, in Sleeper, Woody Allen’s self-described “nostalgic look at the future.” Among Deaton’s other most famous works were the fully integrated sculptured twin stadiums of the Harry S. Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Mo. Meehan, 89, who also worked with Deaton on the 1963 Genesee project, said the bank was a far more functional project than the house, which the late Deaton abandoned as a family home and has still never boasted permanent residents. In contrast, the bank’s oval, for example, is more than just sci-fi accoutrement. “It keeps the snow and ice off the building,” the retired engineer said. “… We’d meet every Friday at 1 o’clock at a little restaurant up in Lakewood. We had lunch for three hours. We put our heads together on how we were going to solve everything.” The Museum of Outdoor Arts, located at the Englewood Civic Center, 1000 Englewood Parkway, is presenting an exhibit on Deaton’s work through Sept. 22. Although to some the bank evokes the “future” as envisioned from a distinctly 1960s vantage point, Meehan thinks time has finally caught up with the imaginative structure. “To me, it’s the 21st century type of bank—made in the 20th century,” he said.
Even the bank’s safe looks like something Capt. Kirk might walk into.
