As an Elks Club member, I went upstairs to the Lodge and had a customary complimentary guest member drink. One small café was still open on Main Street. As I recall, everything else was closed and deserted. The Opera House was operating and summertime crowds were still enjoying the “face on the barroom floor” on the Teller House floor. A Swedish gaming firm took over the bar, leasing the building from the Central City Opera Association and had a large benefit grand opening that we attended. They spent thousands of dollars remodeling the Teller House facility. I can remember watching a prominent Denver lawyer aggressively spinning the wheel on a $1 slot machine. A few years later, they closed the door on the casino operation, but the opera group had a remodeled building and some lease money in the bank. B.T. I love the restored Victorian Maverick Sharp Tony Thorpe homes and the way the town tucks into the mountain enclave. ‘The Book of Mormon’ – the musical Its third time through Denver, The Book of Mormon is still packing the house, after recordbreaking engagements in 2012 and 2013. The “funniest musical of all time” was written by Trey Parker, Bobby Lopez and Matt Stone. It debuted in 2011 and won nine Tony awards as well as a Grammy. Parker and Stone, who met in a film class at the University of Colorado, are the creators of the audacious, vile cartoon television show South Park that debuted in 1997. Bobby Lopez wrote the music for the amazingly popular cartoonstory, Frozen. What type of a spin will the South Park creators put on this topic? How will they portray the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, the mysterious religion that settled Salt Lake City just like the gold rush birthed Denver? Most of us have indeed been visited by the pair of young Mormons at our front door, asking to share the Book of Mormon and how it can change our life. Will the musical take us for a ride? Hold onto your seats, folks! I went to see the worldwide smash hit with my 30-year-old nephew Dylan. I knew what to expect, kind of. I had only seen one of the 257 South Park TV show The colorful journey of a pair of Mormon missionaries is told in the zesty, shocking Book of Mormon, the musical.

episodes. But, I had seen Parker and Stone’s musical about Colorado’s Alferd Packer, Cannibal! The Musical! in 2008 at a small theater in Las Vegas, so I knew what I was in for – kind of. The Book of Mormon starts right out with charismatic zesty songs. “Hello” has a clean-scrubbed crew of white-shirted, neck-tied, jubilant doorbell-ringing missionaries – singing and cavorting and leaping. “Two by Two” presents the earnest young men eagerly departing in “companion” pairs to exciting places like France and Norway and Orlando, Florida. The initial setting and backdrop are familiar - the Mormon Tabernacle and the Salt Lake City airport from whence missionaries depart for their twoyear evangelizing assignment required of every Mormon male. The scenario quickly takes a turn toward the dark side. Our hero and anti-hero are dispatched to Uganda, much to superstar Elder Price’s great disappointment. The “companion pair” is laughably mismatched: Elder Price, a gleaming over-achiever, and Elder Cunningham, a skulking lad whose wayward way with the truth creates an unlikely turn of events... The frenzied scene of pep and gusto shifts to the dire and deadly

The awkward but endearing Elder Cunningham converts some of the Ugandan natives to the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (most commonly called the Mormon Church).

dreariness of Uganda, as scarily but humorously depicted by Parker, Lopez and Stone. The African country and its people are so cursed by the afflictions of poverty, hunger, violence and AIDS that the natives’ ultimate motto is “Hasa Diga Eebowai” translated as “F* You God” (song and dance!). Into this dark scene plops our pair of dazzle-eyed missionaries, joining a dozen of their brethren all of them intent on converting and baptizing the locals. Tasked with interpreting the Book of Mormon and its fantastical story to the Ugandan natives,

our unlikely hero, Elder Cunningham, stray his preaching from the already hard-to-believe Book to win the natives’ interest and faith. He secures the first Ugandan convert to the Church - a peppy young woman, Nabulungi, who embraces the fantastical faith consummated in Cunningham’s first baptism (song and dance!). A little Internet research reveals the dark depiction of Uganda is somewhat exaggerated. Although the country is wracked by AID, but 6 percent not 80 percent of the citizens are afflicted. Daily wages of $1.25 contribute to wrenching poverty and disease. Sodomy is illegal, punishable by two years in prison. This gives you the flavor of the topics portrayed by the musical in its lively, shocking, scatological style. The darkness is lightened up with songs like, “I Believe,” which pokes fun at Mormonism but could probably apply to other religious faiths. “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream” presents with verve and color the imagined fiery underground possibly imagined not just by Mormons but by maybe many of us raised in a Christian faith. As in all good musicals, the underdog triumphs. Rather than the over-achieving Elder Price, it is awkward bumbling Elder Cunningham who steps forward to convert and baptize a number of natives, after he opts to “Man Up” (song and dance!) like Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, Elder Price attempts to convert the local despot-general resulting in disturbing consequences. Remember – brought to you by the dudes who created South Park! When the head of the Mormon Church visits his Uganda missionaries, Cunningham’s converts prepare a campy, vampy play-within-

a-play to demonstrate their version of the seemingly ridiculous beliefs they have embraced, putting an over-the-top spin on the already misinterpreted Book of Mormon and a faraway promised paradise they call “Salta Laka Citeeee.” The musical explodes the menacing elements of a struggling third-world society into an entertaining farce that pulls from a range of American pop culture, from Star Wars complete with Darth Vader and Yoda, to pop-singer danceking Michael Jackson. The three creators of The Book of Mormon amply illustrate their credo that “a good musical is moving and powerful.” As you might expect, the raunchy romp delivers profanity, absurdity and nonstop shock value, bundled with maybe metaphor and meaning. Nonetheless, you wouldn’t want to take mother to this musical, but my nephew Dylan was the perfect companion. This review won’t go into detail about many scenes, songs and jokes. I don’t want to be a spoiler, but also it’s not fit to print in a family publication. As my daughter reminded me, “Mom, it’s meant to be offensive to everybody.” And it succeeds – with gusto and flair and song and dance. How does the Mormon Church view the religious satire? As a vehicle to engage possible converts. The Deseret News, Salt Lake City’s major Mormon newspaper, called it “profane and hysterical.” The Church ran three full-page ads in the show program encouraging, “You’ve seen the play… now read The Book.” 1. Octoberfest By Rosemary Fetter

One of Denver’s favorite fall celebrations, Oktoberfest, is a spirited celebration of the city’s German heritage, featuring food, music and, of course, beer. Along with a stein-hoisting contest, brat eating and polka, the annual festival even includes a Long Dog Derby, which determines Denver’s fastest dachshunds. (Slower wiener dogs can also compete in the Long Dog Derby Costume Contest or the Wiener Wanna-Be Race.) And, although they are separate events, the last weekend of Octoberfest coincides with the Great American Beer Festival at the Colorado Convention Center (greatamericanbeerfestival.com). It’s like Christmas for beer lovers. The Octoberfest celebration began in 1810, when Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen shocked their parents, as teenagers are wont to do, by inviting Munich’s commoners to their wedding. The five day gala was such a hit that the couple repeated it yearly on their anniversary. The Denver celebration began in 1969 at the newly opened Larimer Square, when merchants Fred and Hertha Thomas served beer and pretzels at their shops to honor the tradition. Germans relocated to the U.S. in modest numbers until Chancellor Otto von Bismarck’s unification of Germany, 1862 – 1871, which strongly motivated political dissidents to seek greener pastures. The massive wave would be joined by another group called the Volga-Deutsch, originally commissioned by German-born Catherine the Great of Russia to settle in Russia’s Volga Valley. After the Czarina died and the Teutonic population was forced to adopt the Russian language and inducted into the Russian military, a large contingent left the country. Many relocated to the southern Platte Valley.

September 15 - 28, 2015

Germans were one of the first ethnic groups to settle in Denver, making their mark in the brewing industry (Adolph Coors and Philip Zang), banking (Charles and Luther Kountze, founders of the Colorado National Bank) canning business (Maximilian and J.C. Kuner) and real estate (Walter von Richthofen) A number of local firsts can be attributed to the German pioneers, including Henry Reitz, Denver’s first baker and Otto Baur, who built one of the city’s largest candy factories. The Germans and their Austrian brethren became the city’s most prosperous and populous ethnic group, eventually owning a third of the city’s saloons. By 1870, they could boast more large fortunes (above $4,000) than the English, Irish, Swedes and Scots combined. Germans were such a powerful political force that they convinced the Colorado legislature to pass a law in 1877 requiring that both German and gymnastics be taught in the public schools. From 1877 to 1889, laws were printed in both German and English, and a movement late in the century to make German Denver’s second language failed by only a small margin. Teutonic political power in Denver would be broken by the combination of World War I and Prohibition. Germans owned the majority of the saloons in Denver, and when statewide prohibition became a law on Jan. 1, 1916, many lost their jobs or their businesses. Nearly 400 Denver saloons closed and most never re-opened. AntiGerman sentiment raged during World War I, to the point where Germans were fired from their jobs, denied access to certain establishments and even attacked. The Denver Public School District even forbade the teaching of the German language classes. Today, persons of German ancestry (or mixed Germanic heritage) still make up a significant population in the metro area. Oktoberfest provides an opportunity to kick up their heels and tap a keg in a merry salute to the old country.

Trail’s End

Go explore the Colorado Rocky Mountains

Now is the perfect time to explore all our great state has to offer. Arcadia Publishing, based in Charleston, S.C., recently produced a number of local history books featuring various regions of Colorado. The most recent of these histories is The Fraser Valley. This beautiful mountain valley, where the Fraser River flows, has a unique history. Isolated by mountain ranges, fraught with subzero winter temperatures, the area earned the moniker, “Ice Box of the Nation.” Author Charles Clayton writes, “The first account of the Fraser Valley does not show up in the historical record until 1860, a fantastically late date compared to almost every other corner of the Rocky Mountains.” Indeed, long before the rush for gold brought thousands to the Colorado Territory, hardy, rugged mountain men and trappers roamed through the area, trading with the local Indians. The population steadily increased over the next few decades, as ranchers found the valley suitable for cattle and sheep. In 1874, to increase travel and encourage trade, Fraser Valley pioneer Lewis Gaskill built a wagon road over Berthoud Pass, an elevation of 11,314 feet. By the end of that year, a stagecoach service made regular trips over the pass and into the valley. Not long after this, a new industry brought prosperity to the mountain valley. Logging camps and sawmills were erected in the nearby forests. As the Fraser Valley gained in both population and economic prosperity, railroad companies began to show an interest. Clayton describes the difficulties of such a monumental undertaking: “While many surveys were

completed, and numerous projects started, no railroad topped the mountains west of Denver until the tracks of David Moffat’s Denver, Northwestern and Pacific Railroad crossed Rollins Pass, at an elevation of 11,600 feet, in the summer of 1904.” Clayton recounts the glorious arrival of the railroad: “The railroad arrived via a torturous crossing of the Continental Divide, ending the isolation and ushering in a ranching and logging boom.” The author also recounts the building of the Moffat Road: “Timber was removed, roads graded, chasms bridged, and 33 tunnels dynamited through the igneous rock.” Not long after the completion of the railroad, George Eastom established the Middle Park Lumber Company. For the next few decades, the Fraser Valley enjoyed immense prosperity. The hardy souls of the valley endured the Great Depression years as best they could, as did the rest of the nation. “Hard times in the 1920s and 1930s were tempered by the

construction of US Highway 40, a major coast-to-coast route that bisected the valley, as well as the completion of the Moffat Tunnel, a six-mile bore that eased the passage of trains and the diversion of precious valley water.” What sets this book apart from most of the regional history books, is the obvious intimate knowledge the author possesses. Charles Clayton was raised in the Fraser Valley and has deep ties to the area. The book is enhanced by the many photographs obtained from his relationship with many long-time residents of the Fraser Valley. It must have been a labor of love for Clayton writes, “At times during this process I felt as if I were standing on the shoulders of giants.” Located in the far northwest corner of the state is the small town of Craig. The area, known as the Yampa Valley, was the summer hunting ground for several bands of the Ute Indians. Later, trappers and traders entered the area. Two of the famous annual mountain man rendezvous occurred in this region. The 1833 rendezvous was held at Horse Creek near Green River in 1833. The rendezvous held on the banks of Green River in 1837 was attended by famed mountain man, Christopher “Kit” Carson. That same year three independent trappers, Craig, Thompson, and Sinclair, built a fort and trading post of adobe and cottonwood logs

on the north bank of Green River approximately three miles upstream from the gates of Lodore Canyon. The establishment was named Fort Davy Crockett, in honor of the Texas frontiersman killed the previous year at the battle to defend the Alamo. William Craig, who helped build the fort, is not the same William B. Craig who established the town of Craig, Colorado, in 1889. In the book, Early Craig, put together by the Museum of Northwest Colorado, chronicles the history of the town. Homesteaders arrived in this remote area in the mid1870s. The flowing Yampa River provided lush grazing land for cattle and sheep. Within a year, the new town of Craig soon boasted a variety of businesses. Although the new town had a school, church, hotel, saloon and newspaper, residents of Craig were still cut off from the outside world. This changed when David Moffat’s Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railroad reached the town in 1913. Although Moffat died in 1911, his legendary railroad company remained. Today, Craig is the county seat of Moffat County, named for David Moffat whose dream of bringing

a railroad to the remote corner of Colorado became a reality. The railroad brought investors seeking to develop the region. Coal mining was a main driver for these investors and coal remains a major industry in the region today. The storied history of Durango is explored in Durango, by Frederic B. Wildfang. The reader is taken through the early history of the area where the Puebloans, the ancestors of the Southern Utes, first roamed the land, where the Animas River flowed freely. The narrative is enhanced by the history of Spanish explorers, arriving in the late 1500s. Following the 1859 Pikes Peak Gold Rush, a steady stream of miners ventured west for the chance to strike it rich. Later, under the Homestead Act of 1862, westward pioneers began to settle in the Animas River Valley of southwestern Colorado. In 1880, Gen. William Jackson Palmer brought his Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to the Animas River Valley, to transport the rich ore mined in the surrounding mountains. By the following year, the town of Durango was established by Palmer, as a railroad depot for his Silverton branch of the D&RG railroad. The book adequately depicts the growth of the town to the modern era. The vibrancy of the town of Durango is shown in historic photographs. Today, Durango boasts a variety of restored and remodeled historic buildings. From the elegant General Palmer Hotel, the storied Strater Hotel, and the famed Denver and Rio Grande Railroad depot, this book captures the story of Durango, one of Colorado’s favorite travel destinations. Colorado is resplendent in scenic beauty, abundant with natural trails for hiking and exploring. These books provide the history lover a tool to explore Colorado.

Although using a rock as a cutting tool might sound like “stone-age” equipment, obsidian continues to play an important role in modern surgery. Obsidian can be used to produce a cutting edge that is thinner and sharper than the best surgical steel. Today thin blades of obsidian are placed in surgical scalpels used for some of the most precise

surgery. In controlled studies, the performance of obsidian blades was equal to or superior to the performance of surgical steel. Obsidian was widely distributed throughout Mesoamerica by trade. Its importance to Mesoamerican societies has been compared to the value and importance of steel to modern civilization. In Mesoamerica, the value of obsidian was considered highly variable. It was an important trade item. It was an item that had frequent, common and ritual use. Obsidian was available to all households and was found in hunting, agriculture, and many other everyday situations. Obsidian can be found anywhere that volcanic activity has occurred. Some of the important sources today are South America, Japan, Mexico, Afghanistan and parts of the United States. tears solidified and turned into this stone. It is said that anyone who has an Apache tear will never cry again. In the Hawaiian Islands there is a type of obsidian called “Pele’s Hair” which is named after the Polynesian volcanic goddess Pele. The ancient Polynesian culture believed that Pele, who kept the souls of the dead in her underworld realm, sent them back to the earth along with her lava in the form of obsidian, so they could be reincarnated. The Romans and Greeks used obsidian to make cameos and other jewelry. The Roman historian, Pliny, wrote that obsidian got its name from a man called Obsidius, who discovered it in Ethiopia. Obsidian, is said, helps to protect the very sensitive against depression. It is the stone of the soft hearted and gentle people of the world. Ancient cultures in Mexico called the stone “itztli.” They fashioned obsidian into images of their gods. Mesoamericans made a type of sword with obsidian blades mounted in a wooded body, combining the sharp cutting edge of an obsidian blade with the ragged cut of a serrated weapon. Obsidian was also used in graves, at sacrifices, and in art and jewelry such as ear spools, beads and necklaces. Other Native American cultures used this stone in their ceremonies.
