That evening, they harassed citizens, threatening them with weapons and making talk of burning down the town. They also fired upon two men who witnessed the theft of the turkeys. Denver was not yet a territory. They had no sheriff or town marshal to keep the peace. A military company, formed earlier that month, was called upon

would hang, and four days later, he swung from a tree. By the standards of vigilante justice, this was not swift punishment. John Stoefel shot his brother-in-law over disputed gold dust, and 48 hours later, he was dragged from jail by an angry mob and lynched on the closest cottonwood tree. The lynching of Gordon and Stoefel gave rise to “Judge Lynch”, which was the moniker given to violent justice meted out without law by angry, vengeful mobs. Soon after, bodies of men accused of horse stealing, murder, sex crimes and other serious offenses swung from Denver’s cottonwood trees. Noisy Tom Pollock, of Turkey War fame, was appointed town marshal, and he received fifty cents for every criminal he caught and locked up in a hotel he’d built. Five months later, Pollock left his position after his repeated pleadings for help to house Denver’s scoundrels were ignored. With Pollock no longer marshal and no other law to govern, a rash of murders spread across Denver. Desperate for some sort of order, the people of Denver appointed a police force of four men to deal with the criminals, but the killing continued to sweep through the city. The era of lawlessness came to a head when William Byers, The Hangman’s Tree used by vigilantes to dispense justice from Judge Lynch.

Byers was taken to the Criterion saloon where he managed to escape after a bartender gave him a gun and directed him to the backdoor. The editor’s attackers pursued him, but he and several armed friends barricaded themselves in the newspaper office. George Steele, one of the kidnappers, rode past the office and fired through the window, sending a bullet whizzing past Byers. A shotgun blast from inside caught Steele in the hip, causing him to slump in his saddle. When Noisy Tom Pollock heard the commotion, he ran out of his blacksmith shop and filled Steele with a round of buckshot. Steele toppled from his horse, and the rest of the kidnappers fled. After the attack on Byers, Denverites determined the best course of justice was “Judge Lynch.” Criminals were issued notes with a warning, “Clear out by 6 a.m. or ***,” and a sketch of a tree with a man dangling from one of its branches. Denver’s vigilante committee captured people thought to have committed crimes, and following a short trial the perpetrators were hung in public, in daylight, while crowds of men, women and children watched. After several exhibitions of this frontier-style justice, thugs ceased terrorizing the local citizenry, and folks rested better knowing there was order in their town-though not accompanied by law, peace was finally established.

In 1861, when the United States Government formed the Colorado territory and brought the entire region into the federal fold, the “People’s Court” disbanded. Legitimate courts were established and judges selected, thereby replacing “Judge Lynch.” Public hangings were soon outlawed, but the town’s legacy of lynching didn’t die easy. Well into the 1900’s, the “Judge” continued his grisly work, often at night, frequently in the mining camps and rural areas around Denver.

When Donkey Moves Are Brilliant! BY DOUGLAS (“THE DONKINATOR”) BERGMAN Can a stupid mistake ever pay off at the poker table? Yes! I am an example of a three legged donkey turning into Secretariat at the Belmont. Even an iconic poker movie agrees that horrible plays can have humongous payoffs! “Sometimes it’s about making the wrong move at the right time.” That is actor Edward G. Robinson’s line in the iconic poker movie Cincinnati Kid. Robinson’s Lancey Howard, known as ‘the man’ is the elegant old school gentleman poker king in a 50’ish era of illegal underground poker games. The title character Cincinnati Kid is played by the handsome star Steve McQueen. He has come to seek out ‘the man’ for a private game with seat fillers to crown himself the new ‘man’ by crushing Lancey Howard in a winner take all the cash and the game is over when your opponent quits. After all the star seat filler characters had been eliminated by Cincinnati, the kid, or Lance ‘the man’ it was down to the kid and the man. They pounded each other for hours with the kid seeming to get the mental edge on the old ‘man’. The game was 5 card stud. As the pot pile of cash grew for

the river to get none and lose, chase suited connectors to no avail when the pot is heavily bet and so on, moves that seem stupid or strategically very wrong… a Donkey move! After 15 years of casino tournament play including a high win of $16,500 among other cashes and final tables as high as $600 buy-in, I am here to tell you that my new nik-name is set. I am the Donkinator! I earned that honored moniker (and a few more four letter and asterisk laden names in the men’s room) with a stupid move that built my on a heater healthy stack to table leader stack eliminating one big stack and chopping the gigantic table leader down to six 100-chips in a qualifier for the main event. My Donkinator hand was a stupid error with a brilliant outcome. I had entered a $250 qualifier for the $1,100 main event at a MSPT tournament at the Grand Falls Casino, golf course hotel in Larchwood Iowa. For about two hours, I was very cold decked and having a tough time holding ground at 9,000-14,000 chips from a starting stack of 20. Then one hell of a burner hit me. In a short time, I built the stack to the 40 – 60,000 area. I could do no wrong and the flops plus rivers came my way. Folks including a touring pro joked, they didn’t want to play with me as my burn would beat their better hand.

Could the kid have a 10 in the hole for 10s full of aces or could the man have a diamond in the hole for a flush? The rail birds speculated… the man couldn’t have played such a donkey play as chasing the 10 of diamonds with a jack in his hand for the possible Royal Flush? Could the kid have an ace in the hole for the aces full boat? The kid bet like he had it. The man raised $5,000 more saying he’d take the kid’s marker. The kid calls and says “Let me see it.” He and viewers expected a diamond for a flush. When the jack rolled – SHOCK and dramatic music. The man had fulfilled his destiny, “Sometimes it’s about doing the wrong thing at the right time!” Cincinnati was crushed, said he was done and left. In the alley where he beat a boy tossing pennies at the gutter at the start of the movie, this time he lost. In just about every poker circle, a type of play exists called a “Donkey.” Generally, a Donkey play is just wrong. Any level of player might donkey off his remaining chips on an ill-advised shove all-in because he is on tilt after a bad beat or card on the river hand loss. A new player might chase his deuces to

straight/flush options. Well, you can hear it coming can’t you? The poker Gods chose to take mercy on my Donkey play. The river was… an eight! My just off the bus amateur mistake eliminated the one strong stack at about 50K and beat the table leader down to 600 chips. I was now the Stack Daddy table captain at well over 100,000! I want to make a special mention of the former table captain, an excellent player of the highest order and a solid pro. He rebuilt that stack in true chip and a chair fashion to big stack status! We stood in the get a main event free ticket line together and had a great laugh about my Donkey hand with brilliant results! With all the laughter at the table, and fouler language I am sure in the men’s room, I joined the laughter in proclaiming my new poker nik-name – The Donkinator! Douglas R. Then it was time for the Donkinator hand that, I believe, carried me into the final seven that earned my ticket to the main event. I was dealt a suited queen, eight (hearts I think). The table leader, for the majority of the time, with a similar stack to me and another big stack were both to my left. Both seemed to be touring pros with high knowledge and an ease of play that built their stacks. As a 67-yearold vet now writer painter and a lover of poker, I am an instinctual pre-flop player that uses humor ‘pocket aces.’ I was in love with my rush and full of I can’t be beat! The hand started with strong betting through the two big stacks to my left. My ego wanted those chips! My response bet on the OK but not great suited queen eight was a cocky All-In. I proceeded to set my cards down in front of me. A heartbeat later a whisper from a right of me friend said, ‘Doug, your cards are face up. Cover them!’ It was a heartbeat to late. The Two Burials of Christopher “Kit” Carson

During the Christmas season of 1867, Christopher “Kit” Carson, his wife Maria Josefa Jaramillo Carson, and their six children moved to Boggsville, in the southeastern area of Colorado Territory. Carson had just been relieved of his command at Fort Garland, as the United States Army was trimming its forces. Thomas O. Boggs immediately offered his in-laws, the Carson family, the adjoining three vacant rooms of a six-room adobe outbuilding. John Carson, a direct descendant of Carson later remarked: “Back then you had to work together with people in order to survive. Boggsville gave permanency to the area. People knew they would be treated well there. It was a haven where they wouldn’t be cheated.” Josefa was happy to be reunited with her sister Maria Ignacia, who lived with the Boggs family, as well as her niece, Rumalda Boggs, Thomas’ wife. However, upon Carson’s arrival at Boggsville, it was obvious to all that his health was declining. Carson must have realized it as well. Not long after his family had settled into their new home, which Carson hoped was temporary, he traveled the few miles to the home of his old friend, William Bent. It was during this visit that Carson met Doctor Henry R. Tilton, the army surgeon at Fort Lyon. After casual conversation, Carson told the doctor of his ailments. Dr. Tilton later wrote: “He was then complaining of a pain in his chest, the origin of which he attributed to a fall received in 1860. It happened while he was descending a mountain.” Dr. Tilton offered to take Carson, in his carriage, to Fort Lyon for a detailed consultation. After a rigorous exam, Carson was diagnosed with an aneurysm of the carotid artery. Doctor Henry R. Tilton later described the sad event: “The General, as Carson was popularly and officially known, now was a sick man, without long-assured income, [and] was the sole support of a goodly family, and was facing evil days.”

For the next two weeks Dr. Tilton tended to his only patient day and night, doing what he could to ease Carson’s pain. He encouraged Carson to write out his last will, which the dying man did. Carson named Thomas and Rumalda Boggs guardians of his children and Boggs as executor of his estate. At 4:25 in the afternoon of May 23, 1868, Carson began coughing and blood spurted from his mouth. “I supported his forehead on my hand while death speedily closed the scene,” wrote Dr. Tilton. Carson’s last words in Spanish were, “Adios compadre.” With the passing of General Christopher Houston “Kit” Carson, the commander of Fort Lyon ordered the American flag flying high over Fort Lyon lowered to half-mast, in honor of the General. The following day, after a brief ceremony which included rifle volleys and the playing of Taps, Fort Lyon soldiers led a procession to Boggsville, carrying the casket of General Christopher Carson. Upon arrival at Boggsville that solemn day, the Fort Lyon soldiers carried the casket to the grave next to his beloved wife, Josefa. A year

later, almost to the day, Thomas O. Boggs, executor of Carson’s will, disinterred the bodies of Kit and Josefa Carson and transported them to Taos, New Mexico, for final burial, according to Carson’s wishes. In a private ceremony, the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher “Kit” Carson were buried in the Taos cemetery near the town plaza. For several decades Carson’s older sons, Christopher Carson Jr. and Charles, cared for their parents’ grave site, although there was no headstone. In 1908, the Taos Masons placed an engraved marble headstone at Kit Carson’s grave. Carson’s sons followed with a smaller marble stone for their mother, Josefa. In time, a wrought iron fence was erected around the Carson family plot and the couple’s youngest child, Josefita Carson Squire was buried next to the parents she never knew. Today, the cemetery is part of the Kit Carson Memorial Park. An American flag flies over the cemetery and the town plaza 24 hours a day, commemorating an event during the Civil War when the flag and the town were threatened by Confederate sympathizers. It was Kit Carson who led a band of soldiers to guard the town and the flag day and night. It is fitting that the town of Taos returned the favor with a flag flying day and night of the grave of their war hero.

We’ve had to learn to conserve water because the Ark only has a 30-gallon water tank. It shouldn’t be as hard as it is. None of our tents had water tanks at all. And while our camper is definitely bigger than any of the tents

we’ve had, it’s still tiny. I’m looking for a camper that’s very small on the outside and very large on the inside. Incidentally, that’s the same thing I look for when I’m shopping for a purse, and with as much success. The Ark does sleep four, but you’d really have to like them. And you’d probably like them a lot less after spending a few days together inside while the rain comes down outside, which I can almost guarantee, it will.
