The Last Hand the same with gambling. Relax when you arrive, enjoy a complimentary beverage, decide what game to play, set some goals on winning and losing, and then glide into the action. I watch blackjack “plungers” who walk up, break into a game and bet larger sums of money. Maybe they win the first bet or two, but within minutes they have lost their money and have left the table in a hurry, the same way they arrived. Seating at a blackjack table has merit, the table always needs a good third baseman who knows when to stand, and when to hit according to the books. Sometimes a new player is seated in that last seat that doesn’t follow the rules. Best option is to just move to another table. Getting angry just destroys your good karma. I prefer third base, or first base, seems like blackjacks come to the first seat more often, but sitting at the last seat gives a player the opportunity to see all of the cards being dealt before taking a hit. Just a tiny advantage, but in gambling and life, even small advantages can be important. It improves your luck to tip the dealers and save a few bucks to leave the beverage staff that works so hard to make casino guests feel welcome. No matter which road you choose to the gambling towns, remember to always take your luck with you. Lady Luck is a great companion.

Riding along with Lady Luck When you are driving up Clear Creek C a n yon, the passing By Bob Sweeney lanes are reversed, the right lane ends moving traffic into the passing lane. Most of the time the passing lane ends with cars merging back into the right lane. Going to be some accidents along those lanes, maybe some already. Have to kind of laugh at the motorcycle cops who write speeding tickets in the canyon, almost impossible to speed, but I still see them writing tickets. Pretty hard to speed up the canyon road and watch out for the countless aggregate trucks. Must be a good business! I’ve written about not driving “naked.” Meaning, don’t be the lead car zooming down I-70 or any highway. Wait for the speeder, in that fancy sports car, to buzz by and just follow the speeder. With modern radar guns, breaking the speed limit is a great way to get a ticket for speeding. Bottom line: observe the speed limits and be safe. Passing other cars might only get you to your favorite casino five minutes faster. This kind of rule and suggestion can also be

The foundation of Colorado

he first evidence gold found in Colorado were flakes, panned from streams on the plains just east of the Front Range and from Clear Creek near presentday Idaho Springs. Then, on May 6, 1859, the first lode gold in Colorado was found in what is now Black Hawk by a Georgia miner named John Grego ry. This gold strike created the “Pikes Peak or Bust” gold rush to the Colorado mountains. This discovery of lode gold (a gold vein in the ground) and the Clara origin of Brown the flakes, created a mad dash of miners to the area. The population growth in the mountain wilderness where Gregory discovered lode gold was startling. William N. Byers, editor of the Rocky Mountain News, reported that on May 20, 1859, he had found “about 20 men in the vicinity of Gregory’s Diggin’s,” and that a week later, “more than 3,000 men were at work.” Mining settlements emerged in the surrounding area of “Gregory’s Diggin’s,” including Gregory Point, Mountain City, Springfield, Bortonsburg, Missouri City, Dog Town, Eureka, Enterprise City, Russell Gulch, Lake Gulch, Chase Gulch, Black Hawk, Central City and Nevada City. By the summer of 1859, nearly 30,000 people were living up and down the gulches near Gregory’s find. United States hard rock mining laws date back to the original laws created by the prospectors of Colorado’s Gregory District. These miners recognized the need for law and order and gathered to write laws for the Gregory Diggings District. Offices were created and fees were established. Under

this system, mining claims were protected and proper punishment for criminals was created. These basic laws became the blueprint for all subsequent mining district laws. Within a few short years, the mining town of Black Hawk, the first to incorporate a smelter, became the largest town in the territory until the railroads reached Denver in 1870. By then, the mining laws had been codified, and the milling difficulties solved by trial and error. Horace Hale

The first president of the University of Colorado after serving as principal of the Central City School and territorial school superintendent. He organized the State Teachers Association. His son, Irving, a graduate of West Point with a perfect final exam score, laid out the first electric tramway line in Denver and helped found the national Veterans of Foreign Wars. Camp Hale is named for him.

George Pullman

An early Gilpin County businessman, he made a fortune in mining, and the mercantile business. He is best known for his development of the famed Pullman railroad sleeping coach.

Florence Sabin

A resident of Central City, became the first female doctor accepted into the prestigious medical societies. An acclaimed laboratory researcher, she discovered cures for several diseases. In Colorado, she improved the health codes of the state.

Chin Lin Sou

The acknowledged leader of the Chinese community in Black Hawk and Central City. He later became the unofficial Misung, or mayor, of Denver’s Chinatown.

Elizabeth Bonduel McCourt “Baby Doe” Tabor

Perhaps the most notable of Gilpin County women. She and her first husband Harvey, operated a mine above Central City. She would later marry the richest man in Colorado, H. A. W. Tabor, and create the most famous legendary scandal in all of Colorado history.

Edward Wolcott

A former Black Hawk school teacher, later served as a United States Senator.

Henry Roger Wolcott

Became instrumental in the success of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company, as well as the founding of Colorado College. He was involved with the incorporation of the Denver Country Club, bringing golf to Denver. Linda Jones, a friend and fellow contributor to the Colorado Gambler, provided the research for this article.
