The Last Hand
Splitting Eights Spending Some Time in Black Hawk
Labor Day has passed and that is beginning of the golden aspen trees and yellowing of our hills and mountains. What a great time to drive into the majestic mountains and I love the drive up Clear Creek Canyon on Highway 119 into Black Hawk. Roll down the car window, push back the sun roof if you have one, and enjoy some of the last warm days of summer. Fall is a great time in Colorado with the aspens turning, college and professional football, and students back in school. My daughter Sharon, the force behind The Colorado Gambler for the past 25 years and I traveled up to Black Hawk this past week to visit with gaming folks that we’ve known and done business with for years. (Next week we’ll visit friends in Central City.) We found Ed Smith in his humble office in an upstairs corner room. He, and wife Shirley, are the longest, continuous, casino owners left in Black Hawk and Central City. Their popular Wildcard was packed with customers and Ed couldn’t have been more cordial to Sharon and myself.
Gambler He is one of the few survivors of the growth and transition of gaming in Colorado BY BOB SWEENEY with the small “mom and pop” disappearing from the gaming scene. Ed and Shirley have prospered with a good staff and hard work. We will be featuring this couple as we approach the 25th Anniversary of legalized gambling in Colorado in October. Across the street we enjoyed some luncheon specials in Main Street Café at the Saratoga and a great visit with promotion specialist Rashad Wilson and marketing specialist Violina Mitovska. Our friendly waitress Bev, served us the potato leek soup which is the best to be found in the Saratoga dining room along with many specials. Later we had a good visit with the marketing manager Erica Ferris at the Monarch Casino in the dining room where the buffet is very popular. A large dining room where I recently dined with U.S. Ambassador Sam Zakhem over a lobster dinner. The lobsters are offered on the evening menu. The new fascia siding is now on the new Monarch parking structure and the new garage will open this fall.
The new hotel will start rising Publisher Subscriptions with over 500 rooms and will be Robert Sweeney B.T. Galloway completed sometime in 2019. Erica 303-773-8313 x301 explained that the lobby and hotel bsween1@aol.com subscribe@villager floors will open as the construction V.P. Marketing publishing.com continues skyward. In the new Monarch casino, I played Sharon Sweeney Contributing Writers a few hands of blackjack and split two cogambler@me.com eights against a dealer 3 showing. The To advertise, call Sharon dealer drew a seven and then a 10 for a 303-503-1388 20. Managing Editor I received a five on one eight, and a seven on the other, bad hands. Becky Osterwald But, my enthusiastic dealer, Tawny, gambler@villagerpublishing.com would have won both hands even with 10s. Splitting the 8s probably made a Design/Production Manager bad hand worse. Tom McTighe The lesson learned from this brief production@villagerpublishing.com round of play is be patient, don’t rush your play in blackjack or poker. Take Design/Production plenty of time to play and don’t plan Renee Novitsky on going somewhere else in a hurry. I renee@villagerpublishing.com was in a hurry and had places to go and things to do, this is bad play. Accounting I ended up winning, but only with a Pat McLachlan little bit of luck. My daughter was ready accounting@villagerpublishing.com to drag me off the chair as the cards were awful. But, somehow my luck changed, I www.coloradogambler.com coloradogambler cogambler won five hands in a row and walked out the door a few dollars ahead. A narrow escape.

Going Green
Make a difference with simple earth friendly tips One easy way to become more earth friendly to our planet is to get outside and appreciate the environment. Whether that means walking, biking, or some other fun outdoor activity. The hot dog days of summer are over when we hovered indoors to avoid the heat. Now it is time to get outside and marvel at our beautiful Colorado fall when leaves turn bright golden colors and cool breezes flow across our patios. Also consider volunteering in your community and get involved in efforts to clean up and beautify green spaces in your
area. This will help others to learn to make a difference in respecting and protecting our environment. We need not feel hopeless about making a difference on activities that have a negative impact on our good Mother Earth. Although some of our options to go green are big things involving home construction or choices of motor vehicles, many of them are small things that can make a huge difference if we remember to do them frequently. Here are some simple earth friendly tips to save energy and water.
Save Energy
The Regional Transporta-
$20
tion District (RTD) in the Denver Metro area is building new public transportation options that can save fuel and money (as well as help save the environment). Instead of driving to work or to a sporting event, check out the new light rail lines that connect from the suburbs through Denver’s Union Station and new express lanes on our highways. If you must commute where public transportation does not connect, consider carpooling. Think of all the extra cars that would be taken off of the road each day if more people shared rides. If you are the driver, slow down a bit to get better gas mileage. Speeding not only puts you and others on the road in danger; it consumes more miles per gallon. New energy efficient appliances are everywhere that use
less electricity. These appliances save energy without sacrificing function, making them a no-brainer for environmentallyconscious people. Light your home responsibly. These days there’s no reason not to use energy-efficient lights at home. New energy-efficient bulb technology means that you can find bulbs with a diversity of colors and functions in order to save electricity and money. When you leave a room, turn off the lights! The same goes for televisions and anything that uses electricity. If you’re not around to use it, switch it off!
Save Water
Water is precious to our planet. Think of ways you can save water, like investing in low flow toilets that get the job done
without wasting excess water. Some of them even have two flush options, with less water for smaller flushes and a bit more water for larger ones. Never start your washing machine or dishwasher until you have a full load. This way, you’ll use less water and less electricity. To save water, don’t wait to repair a plumbing fixture or faucet that’s leaking or dripping water. Those drips build up to a large amount of wasted water. Shorten your shower time and don’t keep running water while brushing your teeth or shampooing your hair. It feels great to stand in the shower until you feel reborn, but it wastes a lot of water. Take shorter showers in order to save water. Doing these simple things can save several gallons of water.

Colorado History
How Denver gave birth to the cable, satellite TV, telecommunications industries BY ROSEMARY FETTER CONTRIBUTOR
Although cable TV debuted as early as in 1948 in Oregon, Pennsylvania and Arkansas, the industry really took off in 1953, when legendary entrepreneur Bill Daniels and Gene and Ray Schneider brought the first TV programming to Wyoming via a Denver-to-Casper cable system At the time, television was still in its infancy. The first coast-tocoast TV program aired Sept. 4, 1951, as President Harry S. Truman announced the final withdrawal of U.S. troops from Japan at a San Francisco conference. That year, Americans owned six million television sets. By 1955, half of all U.S. homes had a TV. Since remote areas had no way to access programming from this blossoming entertainment phenomenon, the cable industry emerged to fill the gap. By the late 1950s, 640 cable systems worldwide supplied TV to 650,000 American homes. Originally, local entrepreneurs wired antenna and microwave to provide service to outlying areas, a primitive system that had several drawbacks. Meanwhile, Daniels, a genius at promoting cable, opened the first national cable brokerage firm in downtown Denver in 1957. A born salesman, he encouraged entrepreneurs Bob Magness (TCI), Glenn Jones (Jones InterCable), and Monty Rifkin (ATC, which merged with Time in 1979) to explore cable investments. Several companies moved their headquarters to the Denver South area (a.k.a. the Denver Tech Center area) which offered plenty of elbow room. With its clear skies, high altitude and generally mild climate, the area southeast of Denver provided the perfect setting for the booming cable/satellite-dependent industries. Cable companies and municipalities were in a constant power struggle during the early years, the latter (lobbied by networks) seeking to control the industry and curtail its growth. To start their businesses, cable pioneers financed endeavors any way they could, borrowing from oilmen, pension funds, and even mortgaging personal property. Entrepreneurship bloomed in the

telecommunications fledgling business. New deals were made, and companies traded and retraded in a real-life version of Monopoly. According to the Greg Avery (Denver Business Journal, April 2009), “Cable executives collaborated with one another, partnered with innovators in media content, and invested in emerging technologies in order to survive.” In October 1, 1979, cable entered a new era when HBO provided viewers with live ac-
tion coverage of the Ali-Frazier Heavyweight World Championship, labeled “Thrilla in Manilla.” Cable subsequently evolved into a major entertainment forum rather than simply a means to connect remote areas to network TV. The industry leaders were a special breed. Daniels, John Malone, Magness, Rifkin, Jones and Trygve Mhyren (former chair and CEO of Time Warner Cable) focused more on progress than profits and promoted an en-

trepreneurial spirit in the industry. In 1986, TCI (Magness and Malone) bought part of Group W, Westinghouse cable systems, whose CEO, Dan Ritchie, later became the president of the University of Denver. Through his influence, D.U. built the Cable Center, which houses the Cable Museum and Library, a major repository of material on the industry’s history. Connections in the cable industry led to multiple enhancements at the university, including the Ritchie Center, the Magness Arena, and the Daniels School of Business. Eventually, competition from satellite and broadband mandated more expansive mergers in the cable constellation if the industry were to survive. In 1999, AT&T acquired TCI, then the country’s largest cable provider, in a $48 billion deal. CEO Malone then moved to Liberty Media Corporation, a separate company that included newer TCI businesses, renamed TCI Ventures. The merry-go-round continued to spin in May, when AT&T bought Media One Group, Inc., a cable offshoot of U.S. West. In turn, two years later, Comcast bought AT&T cable holdings, once again becoming the country’s largest cable provider. The consolidation of cable helped AT&T and Comcast compete with satellite and telecom companies barking at their heels. In 2014, an attempted merger between Comcast and Time Warner failed to materialize. Although Denver was undoubtedly the birthplace of cable TV, and for more than 30 years served as the cable capitol of the world, the city proper held out until the early 1980s, mostly for political reasons. Although much of the action has moved to Philadelphia, some maintain that Denver is still the center of the cable industry, and telecommunications still plays a vital role in the state’s economy. Even after selling their companies, many of the cable pioneers, multimillionaires several times over, extended their efforts into enterprises that were not far removed from their original endeavors, moving into areas such as international TV, internet, telecommunication companies and even real estate.

High Hand
Did you know that many of the poker rooms in our mountain towns feature high hand payouts? The High BY Hand payouts LARRY usually involve JOHNSON rewarding an individual player for having the high hand in the poker room during a certain timeframe - the average being an hour or two in most casinos in an effort to keep the interest of the players. One type of a high hand payout would include paying off a certain hand if it hits - for example a Royal Flush or some other combination hand-picked by the casino. Another type would be a payout for the highest ranked hand during a certain time period. While there are other types of payouts, these are the most common throughout the Black Hawk / Central City poker rooms. Interestingly enough, I do not believe I had ever hit a High Hand before becoming involved in one the other day. I found that while leading the High Hand Sweepstakes was interesting; fun; and possibly profitable - it’s also very stressful and distracting. I was playing $2 - $5 / $100 Hold em at the Ameristar Casino poker room last Thursday. The room has a $500 High Hand payout every two hours Monday - Thursday and it had just reset at 6 p.m. I looked down to a pair of black 3’s while in middle position. There was a raise to $25 with four callers in front of me so I called and a total of six players saw the flop of 3h - Jd - 3d hit the table. Wow - a dream flop giving me quad 3’s! Even better, the big blind quickly bet out $40 and one player had called when the bet came to me. After I just called, two more players called and four of us saw a Js hit the turn. So, with a board of 3h - Jd - 3d - Js the big blind checked and the original better bet out $60. I thought about it for a moment and just called with the rest of the players folding. The river brought a 9h and my opponent quickly bet out $60 again. I raised to $120 and he just called with a shake of his head. When I showed my 3’s for quads he flashed a J and tossed his cards into the muck. Thus, the quad 3’s with a J was the high

hand for the two-hour time period that had just begun and the dealer immediately yelled out at the top of his lungs “High Hand” with the floor person concurring. While I won a good pile of chips on the hand, I was also in line for a $500 payday at 8 p.m. for the High Hand if no other player could beat my quad 3’s and it was now … 6:20 p.m. I didn’t think about it until just after 7 p.m. when the floor person came over to do change, looked at me and said, “Less than an hour.” At that point I looked down and saw I was up nearly $300 for the day. And … it’s always a mistake for a poker player to count chips and think “it’s a good day” because being satisfied leads to playing complacently which does not lead to winning - it usually leads to calling and folding … which is exactly what I did. Over the next 50 minutes I laid down hands I would usually raise with based on my position such as Ah - QH, As - Js, and a pair of Q’s. In each case, I lost a just a little bit - not a lot, but did not win either. This is not a mistake I will make again!! Going forward if I am not playing “my game” I’ll get up and walk! Also over those same 50 minutes I heard comments from almost everyone - floor people; players; and both dealers who were in the box - like “Will it hold?”, “It’s gonna make it” and almost every five minutes someone would mention there were only so many minutes to go. Jeez - talk about distracting! Finally at 7:56 p.m., I heard a shout “Royal Flush” and the entire table looked over to the floor man with the dealer asking “High Hand?” The floor person shook his head yes - the new high hand was a Royal Flush and it beat my quad 3’s with four minutes to go. Bummer! I missed out on the $500 High Hand payout but did cash out a few minutes later up $190 for the day - still feeling a bit disappointed even though I won overall. Oh well - I got to enjoy the anticipation of the High Hand; won a bit for the day; learned a valuable lesson; and am looking forward to being involved in my next High Hand! Remember - play your game!

Trail’s End
Charles Goodnight: His trail & his chuckwagon
I
f there ever was a quintessential pioneer, it would be Charles Goodnight. An Illinois native, born 1836, he moved with his family to Texas in the middle of a raging Indian war. By the age of 18, Goodnight had already earned a reputation as a noted scout and Indian fighter when he joined the Texas Rangers. He remained in this capacity during the Civil War, protecting Texas citizens against marauding Indians and Mexican bandits. Following the Civil War, Goodnight rode the Texas plains for a time, ranging cattle and buying a few head here and there. Within a year of the war’s end, Goodnight had a sizable herd. His problem, however, was marketability. The war-torn South, including Texas, was not the place to sell his cattle if he intended to make a profit. Goodnight began to put together a plan to head his herd north; to the gold fields of Colorado. It was about this time that Goodnight remembered an old acquaintance he had met before the war. Oliver Loving was also a cattleman and had taken a herd of cattle north into Colorado during the beginning of the gold rush days. Goodnight realized he needed Loving’s experience to blaze his own trail north. The reuniting of Loving and Goodnight proved to be the birth of one of Colorado’s most legendary cattle trails. The Goodnight-Loving Trail began in 1866, herding 10,000 Texas Longhorns from the Brazos River north to the Pecos River. From this point, the trail turned west, into New Mexico, thereby avoiding marauding bands of Indians. The trail then moved north over Raton Pass, into Colorado, following the Arkansas River to Pueblo, and on north to the Denver markets. For their efforts, Goodnight and Loving received $12,000. Not a bad start. After this first legendary trail drive into Colorado, Charles Goodnight made a few changes. The first change he made was in logistics, and purely out of anger. Colorado’s colorful character, “Uncle Dick” Wootton had left Denver and opened a toll road over Raton Pass. When Goodnight brought his cattle herd toward the pass on that September 6 - 19, 2016
first drive, Wooton immediately realized the herd would be hard to turn around. Seeing the profit before him, he charged Goodnight ten cents a head, double the normal charge. Goodnight paid the steep toll, and never again did he use Wooton’s toll way. Instead, he rerouted his trail several miles to the east, over Trinchera Pass, where it didn’t cost him a cent. That was also the end of the short-lived Goodnight-Loving Trail. The following year, the now famous duo led their second herd north out of Texas, when tragedy struck. In New Mexico, Loving was attacked by a band of Comanches. Before he died of his wounds, he asked Goodnight to bury him in Texas. Goodnight turned back from the trail and honored his partner’s last request, a journey that made all the headlines in the West. Goodnight returned to his trail herd, led the cattle over Trinchera Pass in Colorado, the trail now known simply as the Goodnight Trail. It was about this time that Goodnight perfected a very necessary process needed along the cattle drive; feeding the cowboys. The men generally carried enough dried beef and hardtack for their daily meals, a six-day supply, and when the herd stopped for
the night, a meal would be made out of whatever could be quickly found from the pack horses. Goodnight saw a better, more efficient way and devised the “chuck-box.” Commonly known as the chuck wagon, after further development G o o d n i g h t ’s invention revolutionized trail herding, not to mention a boost in the morale of the trail hands. Goodnight rebuilt an old government wagon with sturdy axles of iron which required six oxen to pull. The wagon was equipped with pulldown sides for work space and food preparation. Inside, barrels of flour, coffee, sugar, and the like were packed, along with sacks of beans and grains. A special compartment held medical supplies. Now, the cowboys had two fresh cooked meals every day.
The chuck wagon was soon modified and sold by the Studebaker Company all over the West. Goodnight trailed herds north to the Colorado markets for years, and in time, exclusively to northeastern Colorado, and John Iliff’s cattle empire. Iliff first bought 800 head of cattle from Oliver Loving, Charles following Goodnight Loving’s first trail drive from Texas to northern Colorado, in 1864. Goodnight continued the business arrangement with Iliff three years later. This new partnership would continue for many years, with Goodnight driving an average of 10,000 Texas longhorns per year to Iliff’s ranch in northeastern Colorado. Early in 1868, Charles Goodnight bought a small ranch in the Arkansas River Valley, (a portion of the Mexi-

can Nolan Grant) a few miles west of Pueblo. Here he lived for some years and ran his Goodnight Trail from this point. During the early 1870s, Goodnight branched his trail at the Pueblo point, creating a trail eastward to Granada and later, extending to Dodge City, Kansas. It was about this time that Goodnight married his longtime love, Mary Ann Dyer, and brought her to the Pueblo ranch. Mrs. Goodnight immediately fell in with Pueblo’s social elite, the Thatchers, the Blooms, and the Pickards. Mrs. Goodnight became the force behind the building of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the first of its kind in Southern Colorado, and was actively involved in Pueblo’s educational endeavors. In the meantime, Charles Goodnight had increased his cattle herd to over 3,000, using the P A T brand. He joined with the Thatchers and Blooms in buying out smaller cattle outfits along the Hardscrabble area, a partnership which would become one of Colorado’s largest cooperative cattle empires of the era. During his years in Pueblo, Goodnight improved his stock by interbreeding shorthorn bulls and with Texas longhorns raising corn for feed. He used his Arkansas River water rights to dig ditches for irrigation, which worked for a time, until a flood nearly wiped him out. The financial panic of 1873 caused Goodnight to borrow money with heavy mortgages against his property in an effort for Goodnight to continue. Continue he did, by forming a partnership and lifelong friendship with cattleman John Prowers. The two operated a meat packing business in Las Animas, where some of their inferior cattle still produced somewhat of a profit. This arrangement, while economically sound, discouraged Goodnight. His love was the open range, the cattle trails, the freedom. Settlers settled, towns grew, people were everywhere. He hated the congestion. He sold out to Prowers, including his Pueblo ranch. Goodnight took his wife and his large herd of cattle and went back to Texas. When he died in 1929, Charles Goodnight left a rich American heritage, a piece of which is still in Colorado, as well as his own western legend, and the tail of the Goodnight Trail. PAGE 17
