Taste of the Tech Center takes flight Newly renamed event fills Centennial’s X-Jet Hangar
T
By Peter Jones his was the 13th year for the south metro area’s premier tasting event, but the first year with its new more broadly defined name – Taste of the Tech Center. “It’s hard to define business boundaries today,” said John Herbers, president of the newly renamed DTC/ Greenwood Village Chamber of Commerce, which produces the event formerly known as Taste of Greenwood Village. Like the Taste, itself, the chamber added the Denver Tech Center’s initials to its name earlier this year to better reflect its mission and membership. Continued on page 3

Hyatt sells DTC hotel Building to remain under Hyatt brand
By Peter Jones Hyatt Hotels Corporation has sold the 451-room Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center to an Austin, Texas-based affiliate of JMI Realty for approximately $60 million. That amounts to about $133,000 per room. As part of the sale announced last week, Hyatt has entered into a franchise agreement with JMI Realty, which has contracted with Davidson Hotels & Resorts to manage the hotel under the Hyatt Regency brand. “This transaction allows Hyatt to retain its brand presence in the Denver Tech Center area and furthers our capital recycling strategy, which allows us to continue to achieve strategic growth,” Hyatt’s Stephen
Haggerty said in a statement. “We are excited to enter into a relationship with an owner as respected as JMI Realty, and we believe their planned renovation of the hotel’s meeting space will help maintain the Hyatt Regency brand’s reputation as a superior place for meetings and events.” The recently renovated AAA-rated hotel features more than 30,000 square feet of functional space and the recently opened Root25 Taphouse & Kitchen, which highlights Colorado craft beer, and Perks Coffee & Go, a gourmet market offering Starbucks products. Hyatt said in a statement that JMI Realty plans to renovate the hotel’s meeting spaces to attract conferences and other large events. Hyatt reportedly purchased the building in 1997 for $47.8 million.

Greenwood Village welcomes Fidelity Investments regional HQ
By Jan Wondra The rain stopped and the sun came out. Gov. John Hickenlooper arrived wearing a blue shirt, amidst the sea of black suits, and Colorado officially welcomed Fidelity Investments to it’s new regional site at 6501 S. Fiddler’s Green Circle in Greenwood Village. The Sept. 19 ceremonial ribbon‐cutting event included Greenwood Village Mayor Pro Tem Gary Kramer, as well as Kathleen Murphy, president of Fidelity Investments Personal Investing. Hickenlooper, dressed to roll up his sleeves and fly from the grand opening to the flood-ravaged area of Julesburg, said, “People asked me, with the urgency of our flood situation, ‘Are you still going to the grand opening?’ and I said ‘You bet!’ Colorado is about quality of life, and quality of life starts with a good job. We’re thinking about the good jobs that Fidelity Investments
will bring to this state and we are thrilled to welcome you here. “When we look at Colorado, at the quality of individuals here, this is a community working together. It’s been true since our pioneer days. Our people, this is the reason that Forbes ranked us as having the No. 1 workforce in America.” Fidelity expects to be at 250 employees by the end of the year, heading toward 500 employees within a couple of years. “We’re here for one purpose,” said Sherri Kroonenberg, senior vice president and general manager of the new regional office. “And that is to serve our customers.” Kramer said, “Fidelity Investments is a perfect fit to Greenwood Village. You’ll be our neighbors. You’ll become our friends. Our kids will play sports together. We’re excited to welcome you to Greenwood Village, but this is bigger than one municipality.
This event is witness to the ongoing collaboration of the entire community, and it says that here in the south Denver corridor, we are open for business.” “From our national search, we knew we’d found the right community here in Colorado,” said Murphy, who manages $1.25 trillion in assets and more than 11,000 employees. “This is a community that cares about its people. From the gold rush to modern technology, Colorado seems to have a propensity for teamwork. We are thrilled to be here.” During the grand opening ceremony, Fidelity Investments presented a $5,000 check to Colorado for flood relief and another in the amount of $5,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. In accepting for the Boys and Girls Clubs, President John Arigoni announced that $1,000 of those funds would be passed on directly to flood relief as well.

Centennial Airport has become important economic engine for south metro I-25 corridor Continued from Page 1 That geographic evolution provided the organization with the perfect runway to take the Taste out to Centennial Airport, a facility that has become an increasingly important economic engine for the south metro I-25 corridor. On Sept. 18, the 13th Taste took off at the airport’s X-Jet Hangar when nearly 50 south metro restaurants – ranging from India’s Castle and Hapa Sushi to Bonefish Grill and Ted’s Montana Grill – launched a wide range of top-flight cuisine for more than 1,000 full-throttle foodies. “We have more restaurants than ever – and the weather cooperated. We lucked out,” Herbers said. In recent years, the enduring Taste has been threatened by the likes of wind and locusts – and this year, the concern was flooding. “It’s amazing when you walk around here, the number of people that have either been directly impacted by the flood or have one degree of separation from somebody who has been devastated,” Herbers said. The chamber leader made a point of thanking everyone who has supported the enduring Taste over the years, helping it survive every plague but starvation. “We appreciate the restaurants that show up every year to do this and all the citizens because it’s them that makes the whole thing fun,” he said. Such Tasters have hopefully expanded their dining options, as a result. “We all get within our own mental geographical boundaries at times,” Herbers said. “When you come to something like this, you do start to figure out what else is out there.”

LPS Board candidates share positions in forum By Tom Barry Around 65 people gathered at Arapahoe High School, Sept. 17, to attend a school board candidate forum for Littleton Public Schools. The League of Women Voters of Arapahoe County hosted the event. The forum was moderated by Karen Hart. Five candidates are vying for three open slots on the school board. The candidates campaigning for the open positions are Dallas Jones, Kelly Perez, Robert Reichardt, Jack Reutzel and Carrie Warren-Gully. Littleton in many ways is still a small town as the city’s name implies. The candidates all knew one another having been involved previously on committees together over the years. Reutzel and Warren-Gully each said during the two-hour public forum that the voters couldn’t go wrong, as there are five good candidates to fill the three vacancies. Candidates provided a brief introduction about themselves to begin the evening.
‘The bar has been raised’
Jones has a background in Internet technology and two of his children are graduates of the district. Perez is a mother of three graduates of LPS schools and two that are currently attending Arapahoe High School and Powell Middle School and has worked as an educational consultant. Reichardt, a self proclaimed “data geek,” has been a policy analyst for the University of Colorado and has two daughters attending district schools. Reutzel, a real estate attorney, has one graduate of Littleton High School and another child attending Heritage. Warren-Gully has a recent graduate of LPS and two others attending high schools in the district and has been working with various school-related committees. There were no boat rockers, as each prospective candidate praised the current administration and the progress of the district, noting they wanted to enhance the district’s efforts. Each candidate voiced strong support of the district’s ballot issue to focus on facility structural issues. “The bar has been raised,” said

Reichardt regarding education and students who would be competing with peers from India and China for jobs on a “global stage.” Reutzel shared that the district’s demographics are changing and that different approaches are needed in different schools.
‘It’s not all peaches and cream’
“We have involved parents, we have engaged parents at all levels,” said Reutzel. “Everyone who is a homeowner in LPS understands the value of the district…it helps enhance and protect your property values…a great school district makes for a great community.” Reichardt said, “To me the school board takes a huge role in maintaining and building community support through communications. It’s communicating with people about how we spend our money, why we need your money, being transparent about how we do our business, talking about our schools successes, but also talking about our school challenges…it’s not all peaches and cream, there are places that are facing challenges…” Reichardt noted that he is hearing about dissatisfaction from parents about the late starts relating to regular teacher meetings in the morning. “Teachers are our No. 1 asset in the school system,” said WarrenGully. “…They are the No. 1 reason that students are successful… we are implementing a new evaluation system [for teachers]. This is a good thing and Littleton is doing it the right way.”
Littleton High School students Ben Fields, Alex Jacobs, Stefan Reichardt, Nathan Miller, Natalie Scheunert and teacher Jay Lukes attended the school board candidate forum. She noted that the district has forced the state education department to further define their fuzzy initial requirements. “We foster an environment where we can let them [teachers] practice their magic,” said Jones. “Part of that environment involves the student and one of the things I would like to do is to motivate families and students to take charge, to take ownership of their own education…we keep our expectations at a level that are measurable…” Perez said, “Teachers are the heavy lifters. At the end of the day, it’s the teacher that will either provide a positive incredible learning experience or not so much…it is a team, because at the end of the day they are the ones that provide the education for our students and without incredible teachers, LPS would not be what it is today.”
Littleton High participated
One of the attendees pointed out after the meeting that the current school district taxes will continue, as the school district has recently refinanced bonds. The district is requesting taxpayers to approve an $80 million bond issue on Nov. 5 for construction related issues. Due to the refinancing of the current debt load with a lower interest rate, the new bond measure will not raise the current taxes that taxpayers will continue to pay each year. A small group of seniors from Littleton High School were in attendance with their civics teacher Jay Lukes. Students attending the political event included Ben Fields, Natalie Scheunert, Alex Jacobs, Nathan Miller and Stefan Reichardt. The students received credit for coming to the forum and will each volunteer for a respective candidate campaign.
Last Thursday Littleton held its second annual economic vitality summit and there is much to be optimistic about in this historically conservative city. Since the initial summit last year, Littleton has re-zoned property to allow for the development of the Breckenridge Brewery, the Nevada Place II apartments, Littleton Commons, the mixeduse Littleton Village and the Meadows apartment complex; in the middle of this progress, they unanimously defeated an irresponsible growth moratorium. While I would have preferred to see the Broadstone property approved, these other projects will add new jobs, new people, new retail tax revenue, millions of dollars in impact fees and over time, tens of millions to our school district. Some of these decisions were narrow, 4-3 votes while others were unanimous; in either case, this council has done more to move this city forward in the last year than the previous 10 years combined. Change is difficult but I applaud the will of our elected officials to support progress even in the face of vocal opposition. Let’s make sure we support these council members at the ballot box in November. Finally, a special acknowledgement to Councilman Jim Taylor who has served this city well for over a decade but is term limited and cannot run again. He not only voted in favor of all of these developments, he even supported Broadstone. Again, I applaud the entire Littleton City Council for their leadership and efforts at building a strong, thriving community. Where’s the economic development in Littleton?
Littleton spends $654,000 a year on “economic development,” the stated purpose of which is to develop economic vitality in Littleton. Your money is spent on the monthly newsletter (which has not been done since April) and on Colorado companies to watch (which their report says has a dinner scheduled in June 2009 – guess they haven’t done anything else since then?). Furthermore, there is not any indication that any one company “watched” by our economic development plan is getting to stay in or come to Littleton. We have several empty storefronts that they could be working on. Why are they not? They refuse to get involved with private property rights. But when the new Economic Plan uses one of its “tools,” they will be using eminent domain to take those same private property rights. They just do nothing, waiting for the next out-of-town developer to arrive on our doorstep. They give away our retail land to apartment development because they see no reason to court retail or commerce development. If they wait long enough perhaps commerce will just arrive uninvited. The city is busy passing out even more money to the businesses that they have declared to be the winners of the Littleton Lottery. Breckenridge Brewery gets $300,000 without citizen input. King Soopers is another lucky winner of $500,000 on the same basis. I guess Economic Development was able to discuss private property rights with these lucky winners. If you find anyone that Economic Development ever talked to, let me know so I can buy stock in those lucky winners. Sharleen Williams Littleton

’m really proud of my alma mater, Colorado State University and the Rams football team. Going to Tuscaloosa, Ala., Saturday, the Rams were the underdogs by 39 points. They ultimately lost by 25 points, but the game was much closer than the score indicates. The first quarter score was only 7-0. The Crimson Tide blocked a punt and got a cheap touchdown to lead by 14. Rams got two field goals and only trailed by two scores. The defense held the Crimson Tide at bay and Rams quarterback Garrett Grayson proved to be a stellar performer. CSU Coach Jim McElwain showed his worth along with Athletic Director Jack Graham in putting CSU in the national spotlight and doing so well. Indeed, the Rams do deserve a new football stadium in Fort Collins and a winning football team is the front door to university recruitment of athletes, students and donors. Hurrah for CSU, also coming to the south metro area in January with graduate level classes announced last week by John Brackney, South Metro Denver Chamber president.

Bo Cottrell was roasted and toasted Sept. 20 at the Red Lion Inn on Parker Road. The hotel is under extensive remodeling, but the banquet room was overflowing with friends of Bo and Lynn Cottrell honoring the long time Arapahoe icon. Funds were raised from the event for TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors). Bo achieved local stardom as a founding member of the Lawmen, a legendary trio performing at the Taylor’s Supper Club. The team of Bo Cottrell, Eddie Johnson and Steve Phelps provided a memorable presentation of songs to the delight of the 300 dinner guests. A panel of long-time friends

On Saturday, I returned to the
famed Daniels and Fisher Clock Tower for the wedding of Lions Club member Catherine Ostrander and Harold Lopez. I was a very young boy when I went on a visit to Denver from far away Craig and my mother took my brother and myself to the top of the Tower to view the vast skyline of Denver in the 1940s. The rail tramways were still operating on the downtown streets. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were starring in the featured film at the Paramount Theatre. The Tower now hosts the Lannie Garrett show and has an events center on the 17th floor. The new bride works for The University of Colorado Foundation serving the UCD campus at Auraria. It was a great weekend in rain soaked Colorado while flood repairs get underway.

I’m no longer surprised at intellectuals, college professors and “elitists” who call themselves “politically correct” and who look askance at any manifestations of love of our country. usinessman and community advocate Mike Hanbery has announced his candidacy for Centennial City Council. He says he would represent District 1 with a strong spirit of efficiency, accountability and cooperation. During his past 10 years in Centennial, Hanbery says he has actively shared his passion, knowledge and resources to greatly benefit the community, and he would plan to bring that same sense of efficiency and focus to the City Council. “The next four years will be more developmentally active for Centennial than the last four,” he said. “The city deserves council representatives who will study the issues, show up prepared and take a critical and nonpartisan approach to decisions impacting our residents and businesses.” Hanbery’s platform emphasizes the city’s upcoming ballot proposal, which if passed by Centennial’s voters in November would make further use of the fiber optic cable beneath the city’s streets. “If 2G passes at the ballot, as I expect it to, the city will need a business plan,” the candidate said, emphasizing his executive master’s of business administration degree from the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Hanbery’s experience in developing business plans in telecommunications comes from designing and negotiating content delivery systems for video
Mike Hanbery production studios and a digital signage business. “I worked in the cable and satellite TV business for 15 years,” he said. “I have the perspective and experience to ensure this new initiative is framed to benefit Centennial for the long term.” Hanbery’s professional background – managing people, programs and budgets in corporations and agencies – spans more than 20 years. The candidate is an alumnus of Cherry Creek High School and the University of Denver, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and political science. He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Daniels College of Business’s Executive MBA Alumni Association. Hanbery is a past member of the South Chamber’s Membership Advisory Board and has been nominated to serve on the Board of Directors for the Chamber. He has also been on the board of directors for youth athletic programs, serving hundreds of Centennial families, including the Southglenn Country Club Swim Team and the Mountain Hi Swim League. Hanbery’s candidacy for the nonpartisan city office has drawn bipartisan support, including from current District 1 Councilmembers, Rick Dindinger and Vorry Moon. South Metro Denver Chamber CEO John Brackney, a onetime Republican county commissioner, and state Sen. Linda Newell, D-Littleton, have also endorsed him. “Mike will be a superb city council person for Centennial,” Brackney said. Newell said, “I absolutely endorse Mike Hanbery because he is a critical thinker who will do the right thing.” Several former members of Centennial’s Home Rule Commission have also endorsed the candidate. Hanbery and his wife of 17 years have two children, age 12 and 9, who attend Powell Middle School and Peabody Elementary. His wife, Pam, serves on the Accountability Committee at Peabody Elementary. His 70-year-old mother-in-law is also a District 1 resident.

Murky legal waters surround the Marin District Board sues itself in continuing courtroom drama
By Tom Barry and Jan Wondra While Colorado has been awash in floods, the board of Marin Metropolitan District may feel as if its waters are even murkier. The Sept. 20 public meeting of the special district saw the board vote to join litigation filed that day by UMB Bank and Colorado Bank Shares. The motion for reconsideration to Arapahoe County District Judge Donald Marshall requested clarification in the suit brought by The Landmark Towers Association regarding its recently-issued ruling. In the simplest terms, the board of the special district has been forced to sue itself. As a district board, members must be residents of the district (represented
by the HOA), but must also act in the best interests of the special district. “We’re wearing two hats and walking a very a fine line,” board member Steve Goldman said. “We have a fiduciary responsibility to defend the district. But we live here.” The Marin Metropolitan District was set up to fund infrastructure improvements in the European Village that was never built. Landmark owns property within the district and is subject to taxes imposed by the district. In the latest ruling, the court said Landmark and Meridian Tower owners are not to be taxed for the outstanding bonds against the property, which total $100 million. The question was not whether the bonds were legal, but whether the 50 mill limit by the district was legal. Homeowners have staggered under a mill levy that went from nine mills to 59.5 mills between
2008 and 2013 when the debt-service plan specifically limited tax levels to 50 mills or less, as noted in the court document. As a requisite of the court ruling relieving it of debt-service taxation, the district is required to file a plan documenting how it intends to retire the amount owed – $1.2 million plus simple interest of 10 percent. The district intends to recover a major portion of the funds to pay for its obligation from the return of misused funds, which are the subject of a different lawsuit. The district also voted to apply some of its funds toward expert witnesses. Whether or not to participate in the motion to reconsider initiated by the bondholders was the subject of animated debate. Joining the motion will cost the district no additional money. “We can participate or not, but our costs remain the same,” said Mary Ann McGeady, an attorney
for the special district. The interests of the bondholders are not the same as the district’s interests, said Meridian resident Mel Coffee. “The bondholders are trying to hold on to millions of dollars. The district is simply trying to cover its expense obligations,” he said. Board member Leslie MacGuire said, “I have always seen Colorado Bank Shares as the broker to restructure the debt. We’re the conduit trying to facilitate this. It’s a two-step process. Ask the judge to reconsider, and then consider joining the appeal and authorizing the bondholder’s legal firm to represent the district too.” After much debate, the board voted to join the motion to reconsider. While the latest court ruling basically relieves the district and homeowners of the higher mill levy previously imposed to satisfy debt service, the operating
expense mill levy remains. “The district has the right to impose the mill levy to cover operating expenses,” McGeady said. “If it is imposed, we can’t discriminate on who is taxed. Basically, it is all of those in the special district being taxed – the condominium owners, the special district, the FDIC, by virtue of owning the sales structure on the European Village property. Our current mill levy is 1.5 mills. The definition of operating expenses in the future can’t be predicted.” Natalie Goldman, as a representative of the HOA, formally requested that all district meeting minutes, bond records and financials, which are public records, be made available to an HOA representative, who could then provide them to the homeowners. One source who requested anonymity said it was likely that another law firm would be hired to assist current legal counsel, John McNamara.
SEMSWA assesses flooding damage Submitted by SEMSWA Following the unprecedented flooding of the past week, the Southeast Metro Stormwater Authority will be conducting an inventory of all affected stormwater-management facilities and drainage ways to determine what repairs will be necessary in the weeks and months to come. Fortunately, the eastern part of Centennial that experienced the most intense and sustained rain of the weeklong storm event has regional-detention and water-quality ponds. These ponds are built to hold back collected rainfall and release it at a specified rate for a large storm event, and the ponds accomplished the goal of not contributing additional flows to the already swollen creeks in Centennial.

“The response to the 1965 flood that ravaged Cherry Creek was to build Cherry Creek Dam and form the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District,” said SEMSWA Board Member Ron Weidmann of the Centennial City Council. “Today, Centennial residents benefit from strong floodplain zoning regulations, proactive maintenance of the storm-sewer system, and construction of regional flood-control improvements, all under the auspices of our stormwater management agency SEMSWA. With funding assistance from UDFCD, SEMSWA has constructed a system of regional flood controls and have stabilized the majority of the creeks in the Cherry Creek watershed, and as a result, much
damage was avoided this past week. I think this confirms the city and Arapahoe County decision in 2006 to form a stormwater entity to manage the known and unknown impacts courtesy of Mother Nature”. While the flows in Centennial were not of the magnitude as those experienced in the northern part of the state and in neighboring Aurora and Parker, the antecedent rains from early in the week saturated the ground and caused the later rains to immediately runoff and contribute to downstream impairment. This type of storm, regardless of intensity, often results in damage to downstream facilities. SEMSWA will be assessing all impaired drainage structures

Littleton mulls city event planner Downtown merchants ‘cautiously optimistic’
By Peter Jones Littleton’s city government could have its hand in the increasingly frequent and popular public events being held in Littleton’s historic downtown if the City Council approves a proposal for a new full-time marketing manager and event planner. City Manager Michael Penny has asked the council for up to $104,000 to pay the position’s salary and for another $135,000 to fund city-sponsored events that the new staff member would organize beginning next year. Penny says it all comes down to economic development. “A lot of communities do either their own events or in partnership with local downtown merchants,” he said, noting the likes of Centennial, Parker, Arvada and Golden. “The goal, of course, is to bring people down and have them enjoy themselves, spend time in the stores, eat at the restaurants and all that. It’s not something we have proactively done in Littleton before.” Penny backs up the merits of his idea with results of recent surveys that say as many 80 percent of Littleton residents and 97 percent of businesses believe it is important for Littleton to strengthen its image. In addition to hiring a new marketing manager and event planner, Penny would plan to

otherwise boost the city’s marketing budget, especially in efforts to promote Historic Downtown Littleton as a metro-wide destination. “The first thing we would do is look at our marketing goals and work with the downtown businesses to understand what they currently do,” Penny said. What they have done in recent years is produce their own events designed to bring traffic to the neighborhood. Historic Downtown Littleton Merchants, a coalition of downtown businesses, has taken the lead with the signature Main Street Block Party and a slew of smaller more quirky events in the Reinke Bros. parking lot. HDLM President Greg Reinke, who has spearheaded the neighborhood goings-on, says the HDLM Board of Directors is cautiously optimistic about the city’s plans. “We’ve explained to Michael Penny that as long as the events planner interfaces with the merchants association and our goals, wants and dreams, we’re fine. What I’d like to see is the city support us, not try to lead us,” he said, adding that city staff officials were highly critical of this summer’s block party. Reinke, a longtime Littleton resident who has produced events across the country for clients ranging from Larimer Square to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, says it would be important for any Littleton events planner to understand the community that he or she would be serving.
“I hope he looks at the lay of the land and finds out what’s really going on, and not change the events into something the community doesn’t want,” he said. Penny insists that the city would plan to work with HDLM, not take over its events, though he says the city would likely have more interest in the larger ones. “We’re not talking about adding bureaucracy,” he said. “What we’re talking about are events in the public right of way. How do you enhance that? How do you put some additional resources and skill into that to move it into a higher-quality level of sponsorship? It’s really beefing up what others have done.” Mayor Debbie Brinkman, a longtime marketing professional who supports the proposal, agrees that the event planner would work in concert with the community and would be more likely to create new events than dovetail with existing ones. As examples, she envisions new partnerships with such local partners as Arapahoe Library District, Littleton Museum and Hudson Gardens, among others. “I don’t think the city wants to control the block party,” she said, “but I think the city would like to have some city events we haven’t done before. We will work with those downtown merchants, absolutely. Anything we do will be in service and support of our community.” The council will take its first formal vote on the proposal on Oct. 1.

It was really a five-course meal of splendid elements and an outstanding fundraiser evening: Hangar Party (featuring bars and cuisine from Denver’s finest eateries), Live Program, Live Auction (by Don Martin including unique luxury packages), Fashion Show (inspired by Cuvée destinations), live music (by Tunisia) and dancing. In four years, with a goal of raising $750,000, the party was packed with attendance of 1,500. John Arigoni, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, said, ”Our partnership with Cuvée Escapes is one of the most significant relationships in our 52-year history.” Bronco Wes Welker (and Elway) upped the value by signing the auction masterpiece created by Brian Olsen, Art in Action, who entertained the audience on stage.

Children’s Diabetes gets a shot in the arm at Carousel Ball By Glory Weisberg nce upon the rather Dark Ages, children who had diabetes had to prick their skin multiple times every day and get injections too, every day, just to stay alive. Fast forward to former Cherry Hills Villagers Marvin and Barbara Davis who’s daughter Dana had diabetes so the couple came up with the Carousel Ball, invited major Hollywood icons to come and filled huge Denver ballrooms and then even ballrooms in Los Angeles to start what became the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. They brought childhood diabetes out of the Dark Ages with a center staff that patients cling onto affectionately, warmly guiding their charges through the education and treatment process. From the beginning more than 30 years ago, the Barbara Davis Center continues conducting crucial research to contain the illness, but diabetic kids still need the money from the private sector to keep the doors of the center open. Some of those kids were front and center on the stage of the Sept. 21 Carousel Ball in Denver. But the bad news today is that even with decades of dedicated researchers delving into the disease, the incidence of childhood diabetes has doubled since the Barbara Davis Center opened its doors, and one in three babies born today will develop diabetes in their lifetime, guests were told during the program. So more than 500 black tied and elegantly gowned guests came to bid on silent auction items for two hours before a tenderloin dinner and a performance by Melissa Manchester, a performance she did free of charge. Bertha Lynn is an admired television news anchor and is now the new executive director of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. She brings with her a warm, inviting force for the public to follow and she has the energy and charisma to move the center into a new era. Villagers of the Year for 2010 Judy and Charles McNeil chaired the ball that honored David and Bonnie Mandarich and Sherri Shepherd. Shepherd is a daytime TV Emmy Award winner with a vibrancy that enveloped the event.

By Glory Weisberg Western Fantasy is celebrating its 20th year, kicking it off last week at Neiman Marcus, the home of the patron party since the get-go. On board back then were creators Sharon Magness Blake and Jean Galloway and for the Western Fantasy at the Opry edition patron party kickoff, the two shared the microphone, reminiscing about that first year in 1994. Over lunch the two scribbled notes on napkins, cooking up the entire concept. There wasn’t even a budget when they created the event title but the community arrived in droves at the National Western Events Center, its ongoing home. Guests went to the Denver Buffalo and Shepplers for boots and jeans, accessorized with turquoise jewelry and Stetson hats. Seven years later, chairmen and their committee chose to wear black ties. And so the event that raises funds for the Volunteers of America began, now back to settling on upscale Western outfits. And on the subject of what to wear, Neimans had flashy fashion show kickoffs on the store’s second floor with local philanthropists lining the first row. John Denver headlined the 1994 gala and Noel and Tammy Cunningham were Humanitarian Award winners. In coming years, local luminaries such as Jaylene and Jeff Smith, Phyllis Coors,

Western Fantasy icons Sharon Magness Blake and Thunder Kalleen Malone, Mary Rossick Kern and Jerry Kern, Dianne Eddolls and Glenn Jones, Betty and Norm Kuhl, Roxanne and Fred Vierra, Gail and Dave Liniger, Dick Saunders, Yvonne and Bill McCallum were honored and in 2000, the Denver Broncos Football Club snagged that wonderful award. The Oct. 19 edition will honor Nancy and Richard Gooding and during lulls in the program, we overhead guests putting together their tables. This kickoff
immediately earned $23,000 with guests signing up for tables right there and then. That was one excellent idea as this year Lee Greenwood will come on stage to once again sing his signature hit, God Bless the USA. Greenwood composed the song and sang it at the 2005 Western Fantasy fundraiser. Also on the 2013 stage will be The Oak Ridge Boys and Lonestar. The patron party kickoff had a Denver Broncos football signed by Peyton Manning up for live bidding and guests paused from the buffet fare as the price skyrocketed with Ed Greene playing auctioneer. The ball went for $1,800 to Trish and Ken Green. Janet and Eula Adams, Lawrence French and Greg Sarkowski, Kay Burke, Diane and Tom Honig, Gail Johnson, VOA President and CEO Dianna Kunz, Ellen Stewart, Jennifer O’Neal, Yvonne and Bill McCallum, Dr. Reggie and Faye Washington, Philip and Alberte Spencer, Brett Snyder and Mariel shop owner Denise Kenny Snyder and Susan Stiff came. Sharon Whiton Gelt and Neimans GM Christel Dikeman chaired the kickoff. Sharon Magness Blake and Ernie Blake are chairing the benefit. he Arapahoe House Luncheon was one amazing success. This luncheon is only four years old and with each year it’s grown. The Sept. 20 luncheon seated 550 men and women, who hung onto every word Meredith Baxter uttered in her keynote address at the Seawell Ballroom, saying she’d “started playing around with drugs at age 15.” Baxter has five grown children, three grandchildren and has been nominated for an Emmy three times. Her Family Ties TV show was quite a hit. But that’s when she started drinking, she said and now she’s a recovered alcoholic. She started acting in 1970. “I’ve been acting 43 years and I continued dragging my feelings to work for years,” she said. “I started drinking to feel loved. At age 17, I was away from home and drank eight Cuttys and water one night. “Denial springs eternal,” she said. She was married three times and is now in a partner relationship “with a woman for 10 years.” Opening the stage for questions, she was asked how she feels about legalizing marijuana. “It’s a gateway drug,” she replied. Cherry Hills Village Mayor Doug Tisdale mentioned the connection between the entertainment community and alcohol, “where it’s supported.” Good comments from both Baxter and Tisdale made the luncheon even more fascinating. And it was all over before 1:14 p.m. Arapahoe House employs 350 staff and at age 40, it has helped many thousands of people. It has 20 specialized services at arapahoehouse. org and a guide on how to get loved ones help is available at that site.

Jim and Kathy Crapo were Hope sponsors and Help sponsors included Larry and Jill DiPasquale, Greg and Karen Gulley, Ernie and Sharon Magness Blake, Triple B and the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation. Alan and Lani Dill and Patti Robinson were co-chairs. On the committee were Mrs. Crapo, Helen Hanks, Adrienne Ruston Fitzgibbons, Charlie McNeil, Laura Romero, John Coates, Kay Stallworthy and Susan Morrisey. As one man in the audience named Lionel said, “The disease itself is trying to kill you.” Arapahoe House Board President Mike Butler asked those in the ballroom to stand if they or someone they knew had been affected by alcoholism or drug addiction and most men and women stood, showing the impact alcoholism has on guests who were really gutsy to cooperate.

ASSISTED LIVING & MEMORY CARE at JORDAN
By Steven Weisberg he Bridge Project held its 22nd annual gala downtown as a blacktie affair to help fund its assistance programs to help youths living in Denver’s public housing neighborhoods graduate from high school and often continue to university or technical trade schools. Denverite and co-honoree Charles Jordy has been involved with the “grass roots organization” for 12 years, and his partner Brian Fun share in helping the affected
families. Lynne Wilk, recently retired after serving as development director for eight years, explained that long-standing foundation support was critical for their continued success. They have more than 350 tutors to help the affected students, and more than 65 kids are now in post high school training including main sponsor University of Denver. Some graduates have since come back to volunteer and donate money from their new careers. The restaurant, DaLat at Federal and Mississippi, was setup
by a few Bridge graduates for their own mother to run. Alec Wynne just completed two consecutive two-year terms as chairman of the Bridge Project’s board of directors. He spoke at length during the dinner presentation and proved to be a highly capable speaker. The evening’s entertainment was Charo, to complement the evening’s theme of “Nouveau Flamenco.” For more information, visit www. du.edu/bridgeproject and www. facebook.com/dubridgeproject.

13-year-old Colorado nonprofit helps breast-cancer survivors pay living expenses Continued from Page 1 breast-cancer survivors pay their living expenses while they undergo the physical and emotional rigors of treatment. Since 2000, Sense of Security has helped distribute about $1.5 million to nearly 1,000 Colorado survivors who because of their treatments have struggled to pay their rent, mortgage, utilities, gas and food bills. “We are having some growing pains at this point,” Rita McCoy, the organization’s executive director, told the gallery opening at Cuttn it Loose in Englewood on Sept. 19. “What that means is we need all the help we can get from the community.” Enter the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce, which last year raised more than $9,000 for the cause. Totals for this year had not been tabulated at press time. Here’s how it worked: Earlier this summer, more than 20 women and two men, including this reporter, submitted our breasts, such as they were, for casting. [In my case, it was a rather painful ordeal involving some chest hair that I’ll never get back, but that’s another story.] The casts were then handed over to local artists who were asked to find their muse in such general themes as cancer, survival and strength – often by incorporating the individual stories and personalities of their models. This year’s People’s Choice award was a case in point, fusing universal themes of femininity and protection with the offbeat “girl power” of roller derby. Artist Julie Scott said the inspiration for the cast’s green-hued breasts
encircled by serpents came from her model, Centennial’s Becky-joi Smith, who skates under the moniker Green Venom for the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. “Because snake scales expand and contract, I thought that would be a natural for going over the bosom,” she said. “The crystals are for femininity. The pink on the one side is for the warmth in all of us. And the snakes are very protective. Not many people want to come up and grab your bosom if it’s encircled in snakes, right?” Other placement winners included a First Place ranking for artist Michelle Kastner and model Cori Kitamura for their graffiti-inspired mural full of sketches, and such phrases as “Courage,” “Never give up,” “Jump for joy” and “If you’re ship doesn’t come in, swim to it.” In second place came artist Karen Brever and model Cybelle Floyd for a cast that juxtaposed the constriction of disease with the liberation of survival. The left breast is imagined as one confined by a tight, uncomfortable corset, while the right breast is freed by the beauty and comforts of a healing summer. “You’re tied, you’re bound, you’re restricted by the disease – but through faith, hope and love you can release the disease and flourish again like the flowers in the garden,” said Brever, an artist who doubles as a mammogram scheduler. Third place went to artist Vinton Ervin and model Tom Munds, a reporter for the Englewood Herald, for a cast that emphasized Munds’s service in the military before and during the Vietnam War, with implicit parallels to a victim’s fight against cancer. This sort of painting or other em-
Breast casts on display through October _______ Cuttn it Loose 901 Englewood Parkway Englewood City Center Donate to Sense of Security at www.senseofsecurity.org bellishment of breast casts was not always easy for artists not necessarily accustomed to working with fullfigured plaster. “It’s a difficult medium. It’s not very forgiving,” said Kyle Bannister, whose cast of Kristin Bailey mirrored Colorado’s breast-cancer awareness license plate. Artist Robert Platt, whose abstract work incorporated shapes of colors associated with model Renee Wheelock’s interests, agreed. “I’m used to painting flat, so when you have a 3D surface, it takes quite a bit of time. There’s a little bit of extra effort involved. A lot more patience,” he said. It was not always easy for the models either – especially for a certain Villager reporter whose chesthair battle with his casting became the stuff of Breasts of Colorado legend by the time of last week’s reception. “We learned things last year, and we learned things this year,” co-organizer Eileen Baranosky said of the second annual fundraiser. “For example, we’re going to cast men who are hairy in plastic,” Rosemarie Cabral, another co-organizer, added with a smile. “Or lots of gel,” Baranosky said.
Becky-joi Smith displays her breast cast, as transformed by artist Julie Scott. The cast took the People’s Choice award last week at Breasts of Colorado, an annual fundraiser for breast-cancer survivors. Smith’s alter ego, Green Venom of the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls, inspired the green serpent-adorned artwork.
Artist Karen Brever, pictured, envisioned cast model Cybelle Floyd’s breasts as a study in contrasts: one confined by a tight, uncomfortable corset, the other freed by the beauty and comforts of hope, love and a flourishing garden. The work took second place. Photos by Peter Jones

‘Centennial’ The history behind the characters
Pawnee Buttes, the landmark setting for Michener’s Centennial.
By Linda Wommack he Platte River,” said the editor. “That’s the sorriest river in America. You’ve heard all the jokes about the Platte. ‘Too thick to drink, too thin to plow.’ That’s a nothing river.” I replied. “That’s why we chose it.” replied the editor. These words were penned by the late James A. Michener in his opening of his blockbuster book Centennial. Published in 1974, the Colorado epic swept the country and later came to the television screen as a mini-series. Another blockbuster for Michener, it was television at its’ best becoming the most watched television miniseries since Roots, and was not surpassed in ratings until 1993’s Lonesome Dove. Michener was the master at epic storytelling, with rich history as the backdrop. His previous works included Tales of the South Pacific and The Source, and later, Chesapeake and Texas, to name only a few. Yet it was Centennial that gripped the country and the Colorado audience, including this writer. Centennial was the sweeping saga of Colorado history and superb storylines that captured the reader’s interest as well as the television mini series. Both the book and the movie center around the Platte River. From the beginning of time, the Platte has wandered slowly through the plains of Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. The Indians knew it as a landmark of their hunting grounds, and when the trappers came West, it became a highway through the Western Plains. Throughout Colorado history, the Platte River has remained vital to the state, depicted in each
“T
and every character Michener created. Characterization is another gift Michener possessed which makes the historical epic true to human nature and therefore so compelling. Many of the characters in Centennial were based on real people or composites of actual historic figures. Take the opening segment of The River, a French trapper sings merrily as he paddles his canoe down the shallow Platte River. At this particular time of the year, the river is low, dramatized as the trapper pulls his canoe to the shore and continues his journey on foot. The trapper is a composite of Ceran St. Vrain, one of the first French trappers of the Colorado Plains and later a partner with the Bent brothers. The character is called Pasquinel, played by Robert Conrad in the television movie. He forms a bond of friendship and respect with the Plains Indians and through his journeys, meets Alexander McKeag, played by Richard Chamberlain, a composite of the Bent brothers, of the historic Bent’s Fort. The two form a life-long friendship that is the basis of the story and the beginning of what would become Colorado. “Yellow Apron” is the chapter that depicts the annual Mountain Man Rendezvous, a gathering and celebration of the great trappers such as James Beckwourth and Jim Bridger, brings the Colorado history forward into a new era. McKeag moves on to a new beginning as he realizes the beaver trade is dying out. He builds a new fort on the bank of the the Arkansas River on the southern plains of the Colorado Territory, where soldiers, trappers and Indians, all come together to trade. It is in the chapter, entitled “The Massacre,” that Michener’s historic characterization is at its finest. Through the story thus far,

As a recipient of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), and HOME Investment Partnerships Grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the County is required to submit an “affirmatively further fair housing” (AFFH) certification. As part of the Consolidated Plan, all federal funding grantees are mandated to submit this AFFH certification, which requires them to undertake Fair Housing Planning (FHP) through three steps: 1) Conduct an analysis to identify impediments to fair housing choice within the jurisdiction; 2) Take appropriate actions to overcome the effects of any impediments identified through the analysis; and 3) Maintain records reflecting the analysis and actions taken in this regard. The AI presents a demographic profile of the County except the City of Aurora, assesses the extent of fair housing issues among specific groups, and evaluates the availability of a range of housing choices for all residents. The AI also analyzes the conditions in the private market and public sector that may limit the range of housing choices or impede a person’s
access to housing. For more details, please see the draft Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice posted on Arapahoe County’s website at: http://www.arapahoegov.com/ index.aspx?NID=334 under the Plans & Reports section. Westward Migration has gripped the country and affected the Indian way of life. Mjr. Maxwell Mercy, based on the Colorado Indian agent Edward Wynkoop, tries desperately to keep the peace. He has many talks with Lost Eagle, a peaceful Indian, whose character resembles that of Black Kettle, chief of the Cheyenne. Mercy loses his command of Bent’s Fort with the arrival of Col. Frank Skimmerhorn, who in history, we know as John M. Chivington. His mission is to wipe out all the Indians, in particular, the Pasquinel brothers, loosely based on the half-breed Bent brothers, the sons William Bent, of Bent’s Fort. ment and reservation displacement comes to a head. Skimmerhorn rides into southern plains of the Colorado Territory to take the Indian matter in hand. He unleashes hell and thunder when he strikes a peaceful Indian village near the fictional Rattle Snake Butte, in history known as the Sand Creek Massacre site. The culmination is the massacre, where hundreds of innocent Indians, primarily women and children, were brutally slaughtered. Major McIntosh, (in history, Silas Soule,) refuses to join the slaughter and facing a court marshal, tells the truth of the slaughter. Superb historical reenacting and character depiction, as we know this to be the Sand Creek Massacre. Michener’s Centennial is obviously historical fiction. The history in this epic story is true, yet with all fiction, names and places are often changed. Centennial takes place in northeastern Colorado, therefore the massacre is placed at Pawnee Buttes, northwest of Sterling, rather than the true southeastern Colorado location. There are other reasons Michener chose northeastern Colorado as the setting for his film. One is the Oregon Trail, where Levi Zendt sets out west from St. Louis and meets McKeag, where R.J. Poteet brings a herd of Texas longhorn cattle north, following the true Goodnight-Loving Trail. Northeastern Colorado is also where he places Jim Lloyd, an adventurous young cowboy who builds the largest cattle ranch in all of Colorado. The Lloyd character is based on John Iliff, who actually did own over five million acres of land from Colorado to Wyoming, and east to Nebraska. As the Colorado story continues, Michener expands his use of description in the chapter called

“The Dry Years.” In vivid detail that only Michener could define, one almost feels the dirt and grit, hear the constant wind, and see the whirling dust bowls as he describes a young homesteader couple with three young children. The woman, (Alice) faces a constant battle with dirt in the food, the baby’s crib, even the icebox. The wind is loud and constant and it works against her nerves. Her husband fights desperately against the bugs and grasshoppers, as his crops wither and die before his dust filled eyes. In the television movie, we watch in horror as Alice desperately cleans dirt off the food, then turns to the crying baby covered with dust. Alice grabs the kitchen knife and ends the hopeless situation for the entire family. Desperation, loneliness and human emotion are portrayed with heart-wrenching realism. The narrative continues, as the town of Centennial grows through the ups and downs most small towns go through on the Colorado plains. The family generations continue to play a part in the storyline, as the tale weaves through history and into the 20th century, including sugar beet farming, immigrant workers and politics. In the end, Jim Lloyd’s grandson, running for political office against a tyrannical industrialist, recalls the words his grandparents told him: “The best will survive, as will the land. But to do so, you must respect the land.” Michener set out to write a novel surrounding the Bicentennial of America. He did that...and wrote an epic story based in Colorado, encompassing a rich history we would all do well to remember.

The generous support and contribution from the community and our event sponsors enables the council to make a difference through art scholarships, art events and public art installation,” said Deirdre Haney, GVAHC member and event organizer. The council created Bark for Art in 2012 to bring awareness and raise money for the arts in the area. It’s a dog-friendly art event designed to attract the com-

5th Gear Kids shifting into 2nd year
Submitted by CCSD All fifth-graders in Cherry Creek Schools and Aurora Public Schools will soon have the chance to follow in the footsteps of the first-ever 5th Gear Kids. The kick-off for this year’s 5th Gear Kids program will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, at Family Sports Center, located at 6901 S. Peoria Street, Centennial. Fifth-graders and their families can enjoy a fun evening of free activities, including laser tag, miniature golf, bumper cars, the rock climbing wall, the eXerGame Zone and the heated golf driving range. They can also sample free healthy food from partner restaurants. Last year, nearly 7,000 fifthgraders had the chance to participate in this life-changing program which teaches kids about energy balance - how to balance fun physical activity with a healthy diet – to promote energy and good health. One of the first 5th Gear Kids was Grayson Fast, then a fifth-grader at Summit Elementary, now a sixthgrader at Horizon Community Middle School. “I really liked that we got to do lots of different activities, the parties, the points,” said Grayson, referring to the manvy activities held
at her school and at community locations throughout the year. The students can use their 5th Gear Kids card to earn points and prizes and get discounts at participating restaurants and recreation facilities. Their families can also use the card for a 10 percent discount on all Private Selection foods at King Soopers. Grayson’s interest in the 5th Gear Kids program rubbed off on her whole family; mom Eron, dad Robert, and younger sister Amelia. “The girls wanted to eat more apples and grapes instead of processed snack foods. They’d even pay attention to food labels and the NuVal scores when we went grocery shopping at King Soopers,” said Eron Fast. “Now we don’t drink as much soda or eat as much fast food, and instead of watching a movie, we walk the dog, go fishing or walk around the museum.” In fact, the Fasts decided to get a family membership to the Trails Recreation Center instead of getting a new flat screen TV. Grayson said that as a 5th Gear Kid, she had fun and learned a lot. “It’s important to balance your diet with exercise so you stay healthy. I feel great!” she said. With 27 percent of Colorado

Photo courtesy of CCSD children considered overweight or obese, 5th Gear Kids is a united mission between schools, parents and businesses to reverse the obesity trend. “The program focuses on teaching students about energy balance, the direct relationship between a body’s activity level and the amount of calories required to keep that body healthy, energized and ready to learn,” said Dr. Megan Mistler-Jackson, 5th Gear Kids Grant coordinator for Cherry Creek Schools. “As emerging
leaders, the fifth-graders can serve as healthy examples and role models to younger children and adults alike, in their schools, homes and communities.” The 5th Gear Kids program is privately funded by the Colorado Health Foundation and sponsored by the University of Colorado in collaboration with Children’s Hospital Colorado, Cherry Creek Schools and Aurora Public Schools.
