Thinking About Poker: Jackpots & Bad Beats I don’t know how many times I have heard poker players say, “I wouldn’t play this hand except for the fact they’re ‘bad beat’ cards. For the uninitiated, just what are ‘bad beat’ cards? UsuBy Drew ally they are the two hole cards a player must have which, combined with three cards from the flop, turn or river, make an extremely strong hand and which then – and here’s the rub – get beaten by a stronger hand. An example of this would be a Full House getting beaten by a larger Full House, or straight Flush, or even four-of-a-kind [Quads]. Many of the Pokertoriums in Colorado offer some kind of ‘Bad Beat’ [BB] prize, or Jackpot. If you watch the dealer as they rake the game, you may see chips go down the house side [the ‘Dragon’] drop – usually to the right of the dealer. That is what the house is taking to offer and run

the game. However, to the dealer’s left is another, smaller drop – that is where a chip or two go after each hand is completed which then gets added to the ‘Bad Beat Jackpot’ being offered as an inChitiea centive to play by the house. It’s actually players’ money that is impounded by the house to be paid out in the event two ‘Bad Beat’ hands qualify for the prize. I have often thought it’s another way for the house to profit from the game over and above the usual rake as they then earn interest on the money as it sits there waiting for the BB to hit. (Of course, with banks paying a whopping quarter of a percent compounded bi-annually, it’s not much but hey, it can add up). In general – and you’ll have to ask dealers for the house specifics – the qualifying hands for a BB are Quads beaten: Meaning one players’ four-of-a-kind is beaten by a higher

value hand. Again, usually both players’ hole cards must play in addition to three on the board. House rules may dictate that three-of-a-kind on the board negates the BB, but you’ll have to ask around for the exact qualifying hands and related rules. Many casinos post these rules for awarding a BB somewhere around the poker room. So when you show up to play and you’re awaiting a seat, look them up so you’re informed as to these rules. I have seen some rooms where the qualifying hand for the BB is Aces full of 10’s beaten, but again – ask around. A few issues ago I wrote about having a hand which, on the surface, looked like a BB could just have been declared except for the fact that the straight-flush I made would not have counted as my bottom hole card would not have played as the straight-flush continued higher than my five cards and the other player would also have only a one-card to the high end. Close but no cigar… I have in my years of playing, however, been involved in BB hands, both as a player beating and getting beat, and as one who received a table

share. When a BB is declared – and confirmed by the floormen who have security review the tapes – the losing hand usually receives 40% of the prize pool and the winning hand 30%. The remaining players at the table who were dealt cards in that hand [a missed blind button disqualifies that seat-holder from participating] share in the remaining 30%. Depending on the size of the prize pool, even a table share can make for a great payday. My first one was at the old Lady Luck in Central City back in the $5 days; my Aces full of Kings beat Aces full of Queens and I walked away with a whopping $900 and change – a big payout for those days! The next one occurred to me at Ocean’s Eleven casino in San Diego. Only this time I had the Aces Full of Queens beaten by the same hand; that was an $11,000 payout. I took the parents out for a nice dinner that night. Most recently, I was in Tulsa, Okla., at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Catoosa, just east of Tulsa. We had flown in, gotten our room and were settling in when I decided to play for two hours before taking

Gaming my Sweetie to dinner. I had barely gotten myself settled in when the BB hit at the adjoining table! I think it was Quads beaten, but there was the usual hootin’ and hollerin’ and carryin’ on when something like that happens. Cool. Good for them. Then I discovered that this house policy was to award table shares to everyone in the room playing the same game! And since there were but two tables and we were both playing the same $1 - $2 No-limit Hold’em, all of us got a share. Mine turned out to be $7,794! I then went on to win another grand or so, so it was a very profitable night at the felt and more than paid for the entire trip. So despite the huge odds against this event occurring – and even more astronomical to be involved as one of the top two moneymakers, it can be done. All it takes is being at the right table, playing the right two cards, with opponents playing the right two cards, and having the dealer dealing the right flop, turn and/or river, just at the right time. Simple, right? Just another opportunity to be thinking about poker.

Friday, June 27 From 2pm-10:30pm, 21 winners will be drawn to pop a balloon worth $250 up to $1,000 Promo Play. Plus, all winners will be qualified to win one of two $5,000 prizes at 11pm! Recently, I got a three of a kind, a full house and a flush in 20 minutes, but even when that doesn’t happen, those guys always make my day. In the Four Corners area, sheep raising and wool production sustained the Navajo weaving tradition that produces rugs and blankets sold to tourists, who first traveled by railroad, then by automobile into the American Southwest to visit trading posts, hotel stores and Pueblos. In Colorado and the rest of the West, most flocks are raised under traditional range conditions, grazing in unfenced pastures under the watchful eye of sheepherders and sheepdogs. Sheep predators include coyotes, dogs, mountain lions, bobcats, bears, eagles and foxes. Coyotes alone kill nearly 250,000 sheep and lambs each year in the West, according to one source. their dogs. Sheep raising follows an annual seasonal cycle of spring shearing, lambing in March and April, then trailing/grazing in summer. In fall, sheep are shipped to feedlots, stockyards and slaughterhouses in urban centers such as Denver and Chicago. Like grazing, herder housing remains essentially unchanged. The tiny sheep wagon with its picturesque curved-roof provides basic habitat for the solo sheepherder on the open range – sleeping quarters and cooking equipment. Seen in Colorado museums, many sheep wagons are still in active use on the grazing range. Other than the sheep wagons, few traces remain from this fleeting migratory livelihood and culture. Archeological projects have unearthed artifactual remnants of sheep camps and documented carvings on aspen trees made by solitary shepherds. Sheep raising remains prominent, especially in western Colorado. Many ranchers lease grazing rights on the “land of many uses” from the BLM, so that shepherds and their fleecy flocks sometimes share open space with hikers, bikers and ATVs. Livestock protection dogs are essential. Dogs live with the sheep and patrol the perimeters of the sheep grazing area to ward off predators. Border collies are the leading breed. There are more than 1 billion sheep

on the planet today. Australia dominates the world wool market; New Zealand is the second largest producer; and China is the third largest producer and the world’s largest consumer of wool. The U.S. imports more wool than it exports. U.S. sheep number less than 7 million head today, down from the 1945 peak of 56 million. The 2012 Sheep Census reported that Colorado is third in national production, with 460,000 head of wooly stock, trailing only Texas and California. Colorado’s sheep tradition is preserved in several ways, such as the Meeker Classic sheepdog trials held each September in northwest Colorado. The BLM organizes an annual demonstration at the sheep camps near Engineer Pass west of Lake City. Fiber fests have sprung up around the state and feature Colorado-grown wool as well as other sources. Rockledge Ranch in Colorado Springs has Sheep Shearing Day early each June. Founded in 1926 and operated out of Delta, the Colorado Wool Growers Association is the premier legislative, regulatory and policy management organization for the Colorado sheep industry. The American Sheep Industry Association, headquartered in Centennial, achieves its 150th anniversary in 2015.
