The Last Hand
Deal, deal cried the losers The bell around our neck
Played some Texas Hold’em poker with my neighbors last week. This is a monthly endeavor playing for points and prizes. The group is well organized with Mona Miller, Ede Criss and Jim Martindale taking care of the arrangements for the players. This is a sort of a do-it-yourself deal with the players rotating the card dealing around the table with no professional dealers taking any rake off of the monthly entertainment. There are some good players; Mona just seems to get good cards, as she flopped a straight and flush to win a big hand during the evening. I washed out early and was home in time to watch the end of the Avalanche series with the Wild. Leading game seven with three minutes to go, they were tied and then defeated in the overtime. It was such a heartbreaking loss for the players, coaches and fans.

talk that much? I grew up in a generation where it cost a nickel or dime to use a pay phone to call anyone. We showed up at times agreed and life was good, and you could depend upon people planning ahead and doing what they said without phone calls. Driving and using a cellphone is dangerous. I do it sparingly and recognize that it does take my mind off the road and it is worse than drinking and driving. The signal light changes and the car in front of you sits there as the driver is talking on the phone. It won’t be long until the legislature will ban certain types of handheld phones while driving a vehicle. So it’s time to get away from it all, drive up the canyon or the parkway to Black Hawk or Central City and relax at a poker table, blackjack game, a wonderful buffet and just leave the phone in the car or pickup. Take the bus and nap on the way up or on the way back. We had a milk cow on that ranch and we could always find her in the dark because she had a bell around her neck. Hear the bell and find the cow to milk. www.coloradogambler.com Kind of reminds me of my cellphone.

a C-note and the prior bets due to inattention to the game. Whatever the lead bettor had – and I confess I didn’t make note of the cards in this ‘drama in real life’ – he was blinded to the action by his holdings. Whatever he had brought on a sort-of tunnel vision in anticipation of raking in a goodsized pot; what we in aviation called ‘target fixation’. One’s eyes and attentions are so tightly glued to the prize (the ‘target’) that details of other things going on around you either fades into the background or worse, become invisible until it’s too late. The cure for this is to be focused but not so that one ceases to be aware of one’s surroundings. Remaining alert to the game but vigilant that something – or someone – doesn’t come out of left field and blindside you. And do NOT reveal your cards until the dealer indicates it’s time to do so. On another note, I came closer to a bad beat than I have in years when I took the small end of one in San Diego when I had
my quad Queens beaten by quad Kings. I raised into the pot with Kd – Qd and got two callers and the Big Blind tagging along. The flop brought 8c – 9d – Jd; I had the second nut flush draw and a gut-shot straight draw. Surprisingly, the player in first position bet about half the pot; I put him on either a straight or flush draw, perhaps trips. If he were drawing to the Ace of diamonds then my flush draw would finish in second place. I didn’t think he had a high Ace combination, as he didn’t raise the blinds pre-flop. If the board paired I was extremely vulnerable to a full house, so I called the bet to see what the turn would bring. Surprising me even more, the 10d on the turn gave me a straight flush, which pretty well negated any danger from whatever my opponent was drawing to. He bet which blew away the remaining opponent, so now the chore for me was, how do I maximize what I could get from my opponent? If I raised his bet he might get

Six players saw the flop of 7h - 6c - 10c. I had flopped middle pair with an inside straight draw along with a flush draw and was stuck in the pot to the bitter end. Definitely a big hand if it came in. Unfortunately, the turn was a Jh and the river a 4s with heavy betting on both cards. As I sheepishly tossed my hand into the muck after the river hit, Bill looked at me and with a finality that broached no discussion and said, “Never would have been there.” As I sat there thinking about it, the reality of my recent poor play hit me like a hammer in the forehead. I had called 7 of the previous 10 hands with only one being a real technically sound hand
(Ah - Qh) and it had actually won. I was down nearly $600 in that time. Basically, I had allowed myself to fall into the wild and crazy play at the table - and simply put, I am not good enough (or rich enough) to play that way. Shame on me - I know better. Interestingly enough we had a gentleman at our table that was up nearly $4,000 through some really off the wall play. Well, as I continued to sit back I listened and found he was talking about the $3,000 he had lost the night before and the $2,000 he had lost at the other table today. Hmmm the true story comes out. In hiking, this player would be the one taking the shortcut - trying to find the easy way down, and in many cases would lead others to disaster. In poker, this player is attempting to shortcut the keys to being a winning player - patience, care, and knowledge, tied in with some timely aggression. As in hiking - the shortcut always looks easier and even a bit more

My plan was to either raise him if he bet out on the river, or if he didn’t then I would try to size my bet to get him to call. The river was a blank and he bet out the max - $100. I ‘thought’ about it for a suitably long time then raised him back another $100. When he called and revealed my straight flush, he allowed, as that was one of two hands he could put me on…but he called anyway. He held the 6d – 7d and we originally thought if the 8c was the 8d we might have had straight flush beaten by straight flush and gotten to the bad beat. But then it was pointed out that only his 7d would play for the higher straight flush and thus even if the magic 8d came, it would not qualify for the bad beat. Well, phooey! So stay alert in the game, good people, and keep thinking about poker!
adventurous, but in the end usually leads one astray. In hiking this means getting lost or falling. In poker, this means losing hand after hand “hoping” for the big pot. In reality, that is not poker - that is simply sitting down hoping for a miracle. If that’s the game I want to play, I might as well just not even look at my cards and simply continue to hope. So, time to get back to “My Game.” Rather than go for the draw I am going to wait, go in with the best, and bet with the best. If not - I will wait for the right spot. And, if doesn’t hold up or if a hand or two loses that’s all right because the next time it will win and win big. Slow, steady, and alertness will get that hiker to the end of the ridge and that same slow, steady and alert attitude will get a poker player into the exclusive Winning Poker Player Club and more importantly, keep them there. Remember - Play your Game.

The Colorado Gambler pays tribute to each of these women who have carved a niche for themselves in our mountain communities.

bers begins with, “Have you seen my ...,” as in, “Have you seen my sweatshirt, cellphone, math homework or half-eaten peanut butter and jelly sandwich?” Sometimes there is an edge to the question, as though the asker really means, “What did YOU DO with my sweatshirt, cellphone, math homework or half-eaten peanut butter and jelly sandwich?” They’re careful though. They may not know where to find anything in the house, but they do know you don’t insult the locals before you ask for directions. The Finder in Chief also has exclusive knowledge of the location of all necessities stored in the home. Family members who go through entire rolls of paper towels daily will do without them until mom gets more from the pantry, or the basement, or wherever they’ve been stored
since the family moved into their home 15 years ago. Tissue boxes will remain empty on the shelf until she goes to the cupboard for new ones, even if the whole family has the crud bug. Children who are normally diligent about hand washing will do without soap until mom refills the soap dispenser. They simply do not know where these things are! And if they do, they’re not saying.
Being the Finder in Chief can be exhausting, which may help to explain the great irony of the job. A mother who has reloaded all the paper product dispensers in the house, then located a missing shoe in the back seat of the car, a science worksheet under the couch, and a contact lens in the carpet, will not be able to find her own car keys. And there is no one to help her. Here is my wish for all you Finders in Chief this Mother’s Day. May you manage to impart your great wisdom and skill to your family eventually. But on Mother’s Day at least, might no one ask for it. May you put the milk in the refrigerator and the cereal in the cupboard. And may you find your reading glasses, or your other black shoe, or whatever it is you’re missing. Better yet, may some kind family member find it for you. Gemstones & Minerals
Emerald facts and legends
When emerald color is discussed, the country of origin is often mentioned. Some dealers say they can often tell where a stone comes from just by its color. There’s a good reason for this. The coloring agents of emeralds can vary from one locality to another. The green of Colombian emeralds, for example, is caused by chromium, whereas Brazilian emeralds are generally colored by vanadium. The coloring agent of light-colored Brazilian emeralds is usually iron. If Cleopatra were alive today, she’d be amazed at how green and vibrant an emerald can be. None of her emeralds were faceted to bring out their brilliance and sparkle. Most were mottled and heavily flawed. Their color tended to be either pale or drab. Nevertheless, these emeralds were the royal jewels. The first known emerald mines were in Egypt. They operated from around 330 BC into the 1700s. Some unconfirmed reports indicate Egyptian deposits might have been exploited as early as 3500 BC.
Egypt was the only significant source of emeralds for Asia and Europe until the 1500s when the Spanish invaded the Americas. Up to that time, it was unknown to the outside world that various Indian tribes in Central and South America had been using extraordinary emeralds in ornaments and ceremonial objects. These emeralds, which originated from what is now Colombia, were far larger, more transparent, and much greener than those mined in Egypt. During the 16th century, vast quantities of Colombian emeralds entered the European market. The emeralds then made their way to Persia and India and became part of the treasuries of Indian Moguls and Arabian sheiks. Because of the scarcity of green forests and fields in their countries, Muslims have long cherished the color green. In fact, it is the holy color of Islam. The therapeutic effects of green are even recognized today. The use of the standard “hospital green” is based on the ability of green to induce a sense of calm and rest. In China, people working in fine embroidery
factories are encouraged to often glance at green plants and trees to help maintain their eyesight. According to legend, emeralds were considered to have healing powers when worn. They supposedly cured malaria, cholera and dysentery. They prevented infertility, stillbirths, epileptic seizure and insomnia. They even served as an antidote against poisons and snakebites. Additionally, according to legend, emeralds could sharpen the wits, quicken the intelligence and strengthen the memory. When placed under the tongue, it would help people predict future events. If worn as a birthstone it would bring good luck and happiness. It’s appropriate that emerald was chosen as the birthstone for May; its color symbolizes the beauty and promise of nature in the spring of each year. For more than 400 years Colombia has been the world leader in quality emerald production. The Muzo tribes were the first to mine Colombian emeralds and regarded them as holy stones. Enter the
Live green and be budget wise
You can go green without breaking the bank. It would be nice to buy new fuel-efficient cars, build new environmentally friendly houses and purchase expensive eco-friendly products. However, this is just not possible for many people who really care about the environment but don’t have the resources to make drastic changes in their lifestyles. Instead, there are many smaller things that we can all do to live a greener life and perhaps actually save some money. For many years, popular household-hints columnists, such as Heloise, have emphasized the need to recycle, reuse and be resourceful In many ways, a green lifestyle may be a return to simpler living of
PAGE 16
yesteryear. Our thrifty, resourceful pioneers found creative green ways to recycle and reuse things to avoid waste in their households. They were definitely helping to keep the planet healthy even if they didn’t realize it. I have been earnestly trying to utilize practical, low-cost tips for environmentally sound living. Here are a few of my eco-friendly suggestions.
For the kitchen
Put lids on pots to avoid heat waste and help foods cook faster. This is especially good advice for us Coloradans living a mile above sea level where it takes much longer to cook boiled foods. I remember how I had to increase the time to boil
potatoes in Denver when we moved here from Oklahoma.
For the garden
After making a quiche, an omelet or egg-based dish, don’t throw away the empty shells. Instead, crush them up and use them to help your garden grow while recycling what might otherwise end up in the trash. As they break down, eggshells act like a natural fertilizer, providing plants with valuable nutrients. Recycle your coffee grounds into a plant fertilizer. They are an excellent free source of nitrogen, an element all plants need. A common misconception about fertilizing with coffee grounds is that it may cause problems because of high acidity. But coffee grounds are close to neutral, with a pH between 6.5 and 6.8, making them a good choice for all plants. Start small by adding 1
Spaniards. It was not until 1555 that one of the Muzo tribe’s mines was found by the Spaniards. In 1558, the Spaniards began formal mining while using the enslaved Muzo people as laborers. Mining the emeralds, along with gold and silver was the easy part; getting it all to Spain was another story. From 1530 to 1800, approximately $8 billion worth of gold, silver and emeralds were mined in these Spanish-American colonies. The Dutch, English and French openly attacked the treasure fleets. Treasure ships were lost at sea, confiscated by pirates and ravaged by hurricanes. In 1622 all the Spanish ships met in the harbor at Havana, Cuba. There were 28 vessels in all including the famous Atocha, which was fitted with 20 cannon and more than $400 million in treasure. There were more than 6,000 emeralds packed in boxes on board. The fleet was 6 weeks behind schedule and left the harbor into the worst part of the hurricane season. On the next day the fleet was overtaken by a fast moving hurricane. A total of 6 ships and 550 people perished that night in the hurricane, including the Atocha. Fast forward to the early 1970s. Mel Fisher and his recovery
operation found the Atocha. They recovered hundreds of millions of dollars worth of emeralds, gold and silver ingots by the ton and copper and numerous rare artifacts. The Romans believed that gems “ripened.” In describing a stone that was half emerald and half of some other mineral, the Romans referred to the other mineral as gradually turning into emerald and considered the stone “unripe.” This myth was a natural outgrowth of the ageold belief that precious stones actually lived, supported by the idea that tropical heat was essential for the full development of their beauty. Probably the most famous single piece of emerald-set jewelry in the world is the Crown of the Andes, which includes the Atahualpa Emerald, a 45-carat stone named after the last Inca chief of Peru. During its long history, the English captured the crown in 1650, who held it for only three days. It became a prize of war during the revolution in which Simon Bolivar freed the South American colonies from Spanish domination. The Crown of the Andes contains 453 stones, weighing a total of 1,521 carats. It is now owned by an American businessman and remains in the United States. Since 1946 synthetic emeralds have been made in the United States. They fluoresce deep red in ultraviolet light, whereas natural emeralds do not fluoresce.
tablespoon of coffee grounds around each plant, lightly working it into the soil once a week. Observe how your plants react and add more each week until they stop showing signs of improvement. Don’t spray harmful chemical on tomato plants. Instead plant marigolds around tomato plants to avoid tomato worms eating the tomatoes. This really works.’
necessary. I have found that this works well to save water, and the toilet still flushes well.
Household
Recycle large strong plastic envelopes you receive in the mail by turning them inside out and using them again for mailing. Our prescription drugs come in large white plastic envelopes, which turn, into shiny silver envelopes when reversed. These can be cut flat and used for fancy giftwrapping also.
For the bathroom
Save water by placing a waterfilled mason jar upright in the bottom of the toilet tank. Most toilets use more water to flush than

Laundry
Save money and energy by using plastic nubby balls (about the size of a tennis ball) to separate your clothes in the dryer, which makes them dry faster and avoids wrinkling and static cling. I don’t need to buy dryer sheets anymore. I bought these handy eco-friendly balls at a dollar store.
Outdoors
Don’t use insecticides to kill ants. Instead pour several cups of boiling water over the ant dens. If the ants rebuild their dens, repeat this boiling water treatment over their den several times. Our family digs our own fishing worms and puts the worms in cans containing old coffee grounds. It keeps the worms alive longer and quickly available for sliding on our fishing hooks.

Auntie Stone Fort Collins’ first female pioneer
Elizabeth Stone was not only a female pioneer of Colorado, but also a powerful force that optimized the pioneer spirit. Widowed twice and left with eight children to raise alone, Elizabeth persevered with determination and the will to succeed. She did so and left her mark on Colorado’s early history and was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 1988. Elizabeth Hickok was born Sept. 21, 1801, in Hartford, Conn., to David and Adah Hickok. The Hickok family moved to Watertown, N.Y., in 1805, where Elizabeth was reared and received her education. On Feb. 22, 1824, she married Dr. Ezekiel W. Robbins. The Robbins family traveled by covered wagon with two infant children to the frontier town of St. Louis, Mo. There they established a store, Robbins and Sons, during the booming fur-trade era. Moving to Illinois in 1840, Ezekiel established his medical practice and became a state representative, of which he served two terms. Ezekiel died on July 25, 1852, of cholera during a horrible epidemic that was sweeping across the western half of the country at the time. Elizabeth received a substantial fortune from her husband’s estate. Yet, the grieving widow was faced to raise their eight children alone. The single mother raised her family, and at the age of 55, she met Lewis Stone, a widower, whose late wife was also named Elizabeth. The two eventually married in 1857. The Stones owned and operated a hotel in Minnesota, known as the “Stone House,” for a few years before deciding to move west. In 1862, the Stone family crossed the Plains of America, following the South Platte River, by covered wagon. Arriving in Denver, they purchased land that included 12 lots, a hotel and a restaurant. A portion of this land is now the site of Union Station. Shortly after the land purchase, they happened to make the acquaintance of Dr. Timothy Smith, who was the resident military physician

at Camp Collins. The good doctor, after learning of the Stones’ hotel experience, invited them to visit the military camp, as their services would be greatly appreciated. Leaving the Denver property in the care of Mr. Stone’s son, the family went on north to the military camp. They liked what they saw and decided to stay. In 1862, Camp Collins, located along the Cache la Poudre River, consisted of tents and a few cabins. The Rocky Mountain News described the camp as “nothing more than a parade ground and flagpole with three log huts on one side for officer’s quarters, and on the east and west...log barracks for the men.” With such conditions, the Stones were given permission to build a two-story dwelling to serve as the military mess hall, as well as provide quarters for their home. One month later, the mess hall was opened to the soldiers. Elizabeth was the first female at Camp Collins. Described as a kind and gracious woman, the soldiers soon nicknamed her “Auntie” Stone. She immediately established camaraderie with the soldiers and, with
her influence, a sense of community was created which carried over to the future founding of the town. In 1864, the Stones built the first house at the camp. (This cabin was moved twice in later years and now sits at the Fort Collins Pioneer Museum.) Mrs. Stone ran a mess hall for the soldiers and rooming for officers from this log home. Lewis Stone died in 1866 and was buried in the Post Cemetery. Following the death of her husband, Elizabeth, now a widow for the second time, decided to stay in the area and continue operating the boarding house at Fort Collins. In 1866, her niece, Elizabeth Keays, brought her son to the military post. Keays started a school in one of the rooms of Auntie Stone’s cabin, thus establishing the first school in Fort Collins. Auntie Stone was instrumental in the development of the town of Fort Collins. Due to her strong business acumen, she was the only woman included among the original founders of the town of Fort Collins. Her influ-

into a business venture with Henry Clay Peterson. They built the first flourmill in Larimer County, the second in the state, completed in 1868. The operation was very successful despite two fires. In 1871, Auntie Stone founded the first brick kiln in Northern Colorado. The first firing provided enough bricks for the first two brick homes in Fort Collins, one of which was her own. Ever mindful of the community, she contributed to all church causes, regardless of denomination. She was a leader in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. On Sept. 21, 1882, friends and family members spanning four generations, gathered at the Masonic Hall to celebrate Auntie Stone’s 81st birthday. Knowing Auntie Stone loved to dance, several young men in the group took turns dancing with her for the entire night’s celebration party. Thoroughly enjoying herself, Auntie Stone not only gracefully danced the night away, at five a.m., she went home and cooked a breakfast for a full house. Auntie Stone remained healthy and active until her 89th year when she became unable to walk and was confined to a wheelchair. Nevertheless, she remained involved with the many affairs of the city of Fort Collins. From her wheelchair, she cast her vote in the municipal election of 1894. Her last vote was cast the following year; she voted the Prohibition ticket. Elizabeth Hickok Robbins Stone died Dec. 4, 1895. At the age of 94, her life had spanned nearly a century. When she died, all businesses were closed for the day. Her funeral was conducted by the ministers of the Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopalian and Baptist churches. As she was laid to rest in Mountain Cemetery, all the church bells in the city, and the old firehouse bell, tolled 94 times, once for each year of her life. The mourners bowed their heads in solemn remembrance of the first female pioneer of their community.
