The lady bartender poured me a complimentary cup of coffee when I first entered and she said, “This is lucky coffee,” well she was right. I hated to leave so soon but I didn’t want to walk to Allenspark where we had a great luncheon at the Wild Basin Lodge and had an off road four-wheel drive into the Roosevelt National Forest. We returned to Denver for the evening and a dinner at the hotel. The next day of this two day auto adventure was going to the High Plains Raceway out near Deer Trail about 50 miles northeast of the airport off I-70. The racetrack was rented for the entire day and we were treated to taking many of the cars out onto the track for a drive. There was no racing but we were able to drive the cars at top speeds. My top speed in one of the cars was 110 mph but the course was about a mile with only one major straight stretch and lots of short curves. As the day progressed most of the cars brakes got hot and we had to give them a short rest but

not a single car had a mechanical problem and the group didn’t record any accidents, dents or bruises. We had to wear racing helmets and we were all briefed on track flags and proper racing safety rules. Safe to say that the cars all performed well and some of those huge V-8 engines really could perform. But, the smaller cars with the 4-cylinder turbo engines and stick shifts could perform with the big guns and did. RMAP officers, auto media companies, staffs and car representatives were just great. It was a great experience, lots of fun and very educational about improvements and technical information about 2014 vehicles. You’ll be reading more about these cars in upcoming editions as these cars return for further review in this publication. I do plan on racing back to www.coloradogambler.com Z Casino and make another pit stop.

This appealing yellow duck fleet wears sunglasses and wide smiles. The 11th annual Peak to Creek Duck Race will float by on North Clear Creek at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 26. The race is produced by the Peak to Peak Rotary club, and they will staff the Duck Race Headquarters on the corner of Main and Richman streets, alongside the Mardi Gras Casino, beginning at noon. Everyone who “adopts” a duck for a $5 donation is entered to win the $1,000 Grand Prize. Each adopted duck has a number on its bottom and the ducks that finish fastest win prizes for their “adopters.” In addition to the $1,000, other prizes include hotel rooms and meals at casinos, opera tickets and more. All those small adopted ducks are entered in the Citizens Race. The Sponsors’ Race pits 8-inch

Charlie’s Bar now open in Central City By Linda Jones
Central City has gone back to the past – there is a stand-alone bar again. Charlie’s Bar has everything a bar should have: darts, pool, table shuffleboard, arcade games, happy hours, man-cans, dancing, laughter and, of course, good times. Charlie’s is located where the former Crystal Palace Casino stood. Remember how gorgeous that casino was, with all its mirrors and eye-catching chandeliers? They’re still there. The great bars of Central City and Black Hawk in the 20th century – the “old days” – are fondly remembered and often mourned. Charles Odiorne is the man who brought back a bar on Main Street and sure enough, people love the place. The atmosphere is friendly and cheerful and all day long people are shooting pool, throwing darts, conversing over a beer and enjoying themselves in general. The arcade games include the very latest: Big Buck, Golden Tee and others. Kids younger than 21 are welcome until the band starts playing at 7 p.m. After July 4, Charlie’s will also offer
JKQ BBQ, always a popular choice at the Main Street festivals. The lovely second floor includes a large room ringed with mirrors, perfect for a party or celebration. An arch was built specifically for weddings and several weddings and/or receptions are already scheduled. Every Friday night, dancers congregate on the parquet dance floor, enjoying live music. Double Down was on the stage the night I stopped by. On Saturday nights a DJ provides the music and Sunday nights are karaoke nights. Central City is probably the only small town in America where karaoke brings out opera singers; this is karaoke on steroids, and even worth recording. There is no cover charge. Happy hour is from 4 – 6 p.m. daily with dollar drafts and $2 well & wine. The 24-ounce man-cans are $3. Charlie’s Bar is open from 9 a.m. until midnight, Sunday – Thursday, and 9 a.m. until 2 a.m., Friday and Saturday. Padparadscha – the orange-pink sapphire Sapphire is a variety of corundum and comes in many colors especially blue. The beautiful orange-pink variety is called padparadscha. With the exception of red corundum, which is ruby, all other colors of corundum are sapphires. Orange sapphire owes its color to the additional trace elements of chromium and iron in its formation, and ranges in hue from pale orange to a vivid reddish-orange, or a deep orange with pink overtones. Though once considered an obscure gemstone, it has recently gained in popularity for its rarity and beautiful fashion color. These sapphires are not mined in great quantities, so even stones with slight to moderate inclusions are still valuable gems. For decades collectors, dealers

and gemologists have debated the issue of how pink or orange a stone in this category can be and whether some stones are too dark to qualify to be a padparadscha. To date there is no agreeable standard for the color range. The name is derived from the Sandskrit/Sinhalese padma raga, meaning “lotus color” and refers to the orange-pink color of the lotus flower. Natural padparadscha is among the rarest and most highly prized varieties of sapphire and has become a collector’s item. Some believe that padparadscha sapphires are empowering stones for artists, writers, singers and all who wish to express their deepest truth in creative expressions. These gemstones are useful for both sexes in enhancing sex drive and increasing sexual pleasure. They are also
powerful stones for increasing fertility. They say that these sapphires bring a vital energy to the emotions, allowing one to be more outgoing and dynamic, playful and full of joy. In antiquity, diamonds and rubies were divided by the Hindus into four castes or classes, and being a sapphire corundum of unique reddish hue, padparadscha was called the Oriental Ruby; a Brahmin of the highest caste. The possession of a padparadscha, or Brahmin ruby, conferred perfect safety upon the owner, and as long as he owned the precious stone, he could dwell without fear in the midst of enemies and was shielded from bad fortune. However, great care had to be taken to keep this stone of the first class from contact with inferior specimens, as its virtue would be contaminated and its power for good diminished accordingly. The original locality for padparadscha was Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and many purists today believe the term should be restricted only to stones from Sri Lanka. However, the stones have also been found in Vietnam’s
Quy Chau district, Tanzania’s Tunduru district and Madagascar. Stones from each of these areas are often heat-treated at a low temperature and such heat treatment is not always detectable. Padparadscha sapphires are

considered among the most beautiful and valuable of the corundum gems. Prices for the padparadscha vary greatly according to size and quality. At the high end, they may reach as much as $50,000 per carat.

James V. Dexter and his historic Leadville cabin
Guided tour of Leadville’s history set for July 18
On a hill overlooking the storied mining town of Leadville, sits the surprisingly plush 1879 log cabin built by one of Colorado’s first mining millionaires, James V. Dexter. Dexter, the descendant of a 17th-century New England colonist, was born at sea near New Orleans on Aug. 14, 1836. When the Civil War broke out, Dexter enlisted with the Massachusetts division of the Union Army, quickly rising to first lieutenant. On May 3, 1864, he married Lisette Maria DeBar. The couple would have four daughters, including a set of twins. Following the war, Dexter moved his family to Illinois, where he became a bank president. When word of the rich Colorado mineral strikes reached the eastern newspapers, Dexter again moved his family. Settling in Denver, where he built a fine home for his family, Dexter was instrumental in establishing the Union Bank. This became the first institution to conduct a safe-deposit business. Dexter began investing in mining across the state. By 1874, he had accumulated his substantial wealth primarily through controlling interests in various mines in Park County, including the Confidence Lode, the James G. Blaine Lode, the Moose mine and the North London mine. As Dexter continued his mining investments, he began to build a log cabin in the various mining camps, as a place to stay when he was in the area. By the time he built his cabin in Leadville, Dexter had six such cabins in various mining locations across the state. When Dexter arrived in Leadville, the mining community was at the height of its rich silver production. He invested in the Robert E. Lee mine, which was producing an average of $12,000 a day in ore, in 1879. Dexter purchased a town lot on West Third Street, where he built a cabin where he could stay comfortably while he was in Leadville. The rough-hewn log structure, measuring 576 square-feet, soon

had actually been struck in 1803. It was discovered that several U.S. Mint employees had illegally minted several silver dollars with the 1804 date to sell for personal profit. Dexter filed a photo lawsuit against the sellers of his coin, demanding proof of its authenticity. The lawsuit was settled in 1887 when Dexter obtained affidavits from high-ranking U.S. Mint officials attesting to the inaccurate date of the coin. Nevertheless, when the questionable coin, known as the “Dexter Dollar,” sold at auction in 1989, the high bid was $990,000. Dexter also had a love for exquisite gems. Through his worldwide travels, he had collected Chinese ivory, Japanese jade and African diamonds, to name a few. Following his death this collection was acquired by the Field Museum of Chicago for $150,000. Dexter died at his beloved Valley View Springs ranch on May 23, 1899, at the age of 62. He left an immensely wealthy estate as well as an incredible historic legacy. Today, Dexter’s Leadville cabin sits atop a hill on the northern edge of the city. Part of the Healy House Museum, the Dexter Cabin is open to the touring public. The museum has included a few of his personal belongings such as a mahogany walking stick inlaid with mother-of-pearl, an antelope’s hoof letter opener and a snuff box made from an elephant’s tooth; artifacts reflecting Dexter’s passion for hunting. A few of his smaller oil paintings grace the walls, however, the most intriguing possession is the “Mirror of a 1,000 Faces.” Purchased in China, the mirror was constructed in such a way that the reflected face was projected in several small images. became known as the “stiffest and most exclusive private poker club” in Leadville, as Dexter loved to entertain his many mining associates. Dexter spared no expense in designing the interior of this otherwise rustic cabin. Lyncrista-Walton wall covering, with stamped designs of birds, leaves and flowers, lined the walls of the parlor. The floors of the four-room cabin are planked with alternating black walnut and white oak in the style of a ship captain’s quarters, used in all of his cabins, reflecting Dexter’s love of the sea. Of the ornate fireplace, Dexter later said, “Some of the most successful mining operations were worked out in front of the fireplace.” The bedroom included a large, built-in wardrobe, complete with several drawers, fronted with the same patterned walnut and oak as the floors. An Italian-tiled stove warmed the room. There was even an indoor
bathroom, with the luxury of running water, and a zinc-lined bathtub. The cabin also included a sizable kitchen, complete with an icebox and a pie safe. Dexter continued with his mining interests, becoming a major stockholder in more than two dozen Colorado mining companies, including the Climax Lode on Leadville’s Fryer Hill, Gilpin County’s Dexter Lode, and the Southern Boy in Teller County. Dexter also branched out to agricultural investments. He bought a ranch on the Conejos River where he raised cattle and horses. He purchased a second cattle ranch in Douglas County and a third near Pagosa Springs. Dexter also owned property in Alamosa, Crestone, Moffat and leased part of the historic Medano Ranch near today’s Great Sand Dunes National Park, as a private hunting grounds. One of his favorite places was the Valley View Springs near Villa Grove, a mineral
hot springs, where he could retreat for rest and relaxation. Dexter loved to travel, and over time, amassed a small fortune in fine collectables. Along with his collection of oil paintings and etchings, Dexter spent more than 20 years acquiring an extraordinarily expensive gem collection, with most of the purchases transacted through Tiffany’s in New York City. He also possessed an incredible coin collection. In 1885, Dexter purchased a rare 1804 silver dollar for $1,000. Minted in Philadelphia, this coin was one of several complete sets of mint-condition U.S. coins that President Andrew Jackson presented to foreign leaders in recognition of various trade agreements. Silver dollars were not in circulation at that time, which made this coin quite rare indeed. However, when Dexter researched the history and provenance of the coin, he learned that the coin

One of our state’s famous natural wonders is the Great Sand Dunes National Monument about 30 miles northeast of Alamosa. Our youngsters enjoying romping and playing in this 57-acre giant sand pile. Thousands of years ago streams dropped their sandy loads on this valley floor. Some if the sand dues are over 700 feet high and are among the tallest sand dunes in the world. (Tip if you don’t have a shower in your trailer, stay in a campground with showers as you will need to wash away the gritty sand before sleeping). National Park is one of our favorite camping spots. There are nearly 500 campsites in this park plus many nearby private campgrounds. While exploring Mesa Verde, we realized how small these ancestral Puebloans must have been when we had to crawl through a narrow crack in a cliff. Our children didn’t have much of a problem, but we did! These ancient peoples migrated up from early civilizations in Central America and built incredible cliffside dwellings about 700 years before Columbus landed in America, Navigating the winding narrow road in scenic Phantom Canyon between Canon City and Cripple Creek is an adventure in itself, but we faced a real challenge during a camping trip when suddenly a dry creek bed turned into a roaring stream after a hail-

We have toured and camped in many other parts of the United States and Canada, but nowhere did we find more history, beauty and adventure than in Colorado, which abounds in recreational opportunities. We saw spectacular scenery, basked in warm, sunny days and cool summer nights, enjoyed great fishing and learned fascinating things about Colorado, its pioneers and pre-historic peoples. It contains prehistoric dwellings like Mesa Verde but without the crowds. This area was settled by the Pueblos. • Camping along the Colorado River near Glenwood Springs, which has many attractions, including a hot springs pool and cave.
