The Last Hand
People looking for fun and games There is something about gambling that is just contagiously fun. Note the people pouring into Black Hawk and Central City every day and the high- By Bob Sweeney ways packed with cars trekking up the canyon or around the Central City Parkway. The gaming business appears to be having a very good year and the casinos are handling this business really well. Food, beverages and services are just Las Vegas quality. I now that many people just kind of sluff off Colorado gaming because they don’t think it is Vegas or Reno quality. Well it is now. Granted, we don’t have the big name performers but there are some good weekend lounge shows especially at The Reserve, which will feature the “Feel This Moment” show, see page 11 of the Colorado Gambler for more information.
I mentioned playing in a Saratoga Blackjack tournament that was well received. We’ve had the Heartland Poker Tour events several times in Black Hawk at the Golden Gates Casino and it begins on Friday, Sept. 5. Poker is a daily event with prizes galore for special hands that really do happen. Poker and blackjack are a real mystery of how those cards come out of the deck. One never knows what is coming next in a big pot poker game or a blackjack bet. Cards do make the player but the player had better know what to do with those good cards when received. It is interesting to note that 130,000 signatures were turned in to allow a new casino to be constructed at the Arapahoe Race track and other sites in Pueblo and Grand Junction. Pitch is that the money will go to needed school funds. The issue will be on the November ballot and we hope that voters say “no.” It seems that the rules were made about 24 years ago where the casinos
could be built in part to create jobs, and rejuvenate dying towns along with raising some money for parks and recreation, along with some college funding. This has all occurred and it has raised more than $100 million per year for the state of Colorado. Casino investors have invested millions in infrastructure, new buildings, equipment and technology. Employees have purchased mountain properties. Now to allow casinos to operate at racetrack sites seems like a last gasp for the horseracing business at the expense of our mountain gaming communities. We do need some sports book locations where bets can be made on professional sports, such as in Vegas and Reno, and that would generate millions of dollars in new tax revenues for Colorado. The betting does occur and we should make it legal and tax these bets. First pre-season Broncos game is coming up Thursday, Aug. 7, against the www.coloradogambler.com Seattle Seahawks. Go Broncos!

Poker as a second job
The other day a friend and I were talking poker via email and he responded to my standard question of how he was doing at the tables with, BY “You know, I treat it LARRY as a second job. If I JOHNSON can make a little during my three or four hours on the hill I’m happy.” Wow - that really hit home because what he is doing is the true definition of a second job. Making money at something you like to do because you are good at it over the long term. This is how I like to think I play the game and why. But, if I am going to be honest with myself, I have gotten away from that simply philosophy and have allowed the game; the players; and my playing timeframes to affect the way I play. How do I know this - by checking my poker book and noticing the higher and more frequently spikes either up or down in my results at the tables along with an overall downward trend in my YTD results. In evaluating the book, I can see that over
poker talk
the past 90 days I have had nine sessions of large positive wins more than $500 and during the same time frame 12 sessions of negative losses of the same amount or more. Now that’s a lot for a player like me who focused on a money management type of game. Interestingly enough, in the 90 days prior to that back at the beginning of the year I had seven sessions with winnings over that $500 mark and only three losing sessions for the same amount. So the big question is - why did these patterns change? This is what is known as “a leak in the game.” It’s time to plug that leak and get back to playing poker like it’s a second job! This means no losing in the long run - that would be like paying your boss at work to allow you to work there. So, here is the formula to make poker a second job for me: (it works when I stick to it).
First: Treat poker like a job - what are the hourly expectations? Base this estimation on historical winnings; experience; and the game being played. This means keep the hourly expectations reasonable. For example if a player average $100 win for every 10 hours played - $10 an hour is a reasonable expectation. But, stretching is good - try to improve at least 10%, thus go for an $11 average. It doesn’t seem like much but does add up over time. This also means understanding where your experience stacks up against those you are playing. For example, if I am playing against tourists and people out to play with the big boys, I have a better chance of winning more than if playing against the professionals. The reason is simple - the professionals do not build the value of a pot, unless they are ahead in the hand while the recreational player is there for the action and will toss chips in chasing a card hoping to hit, thus building the pot. Be realistic based on the game you are playing. If playing a $1 - $2 / $100 Hold em game the pots may be smaller so the expected return may be lower than a $30 - $60 ½ kill Hold’em game.
Second: Play shorter and more structured sessions. This is something I am already in the habit of doing - just 3 to 4 hour sessions. But the key is (and what I have gotten away from) is to treat these short sessions as one big session. This means playing the first hand and the last the same; being disciplined on the times you are dedicated to playing; and being OK to leave no matter where you stand results wise. Third: Don’t get caught up in the shortterm results - you are interested in the long term hourly rate. What is a long-term result? For me, it’s by the month (maybe 20 sessions) and by the overall end of year result. The true long-term result is the YTD; what did you make as an hourly rate at the end of the year? That is the only true judge! So, thanks to my friend I just picked up my second job again and while it may not have medical benefits - it does bring with it a potentially outstanding wage; a really fun work environment; and an opportunity to improve during every session all the way up to becoming the Poker Champion of the World! Time to go to work! Remember - Play your game!

World’s 5 largest gold nuggets By Ray Lundin - Gemologist
There have been many claims for the “Worlds Largest Gold Nugget.” At the time that some of these large nuggets were found (mostly in the 1800s) they were indeed the world’s largest. However, as time went on and gold strikes occurred all over the world, larger nuggets were found and the title was shifted from one nugget to another. What was needed was a clear definition of “gold nugget.” The type of nugget that most people are familiar with is the true gold nugget, i.e., a blob of gold formed by nature. The other type is called “reef gold,” that is, gold that appears imbedded in rock, usually in quartz. When the rock is removed from around the gold, the gold can be recovered in one piece. Reef gold is synonymous with the terms ledge, lode and vein. There are many claims to the world’s largest nugget. Some say the world’s largest nugget in existence, others say the world’s largest recorded nugget, and some say the world’s largest nugget on display. These five nuggets are graded by weight. Now the largest five. Honorable Mention: Holtermann
PAGE 10
Nugget - By far the largest single mass of gold ever found; however, it was not a true nugget – it was reef gold, meaning it was composed of other minerals imbedded in the gold. It was found in New South Wales, Australia, in 1872 and weighed about 630 pounds (about 400 lbs. of gold when smelted). Holtermann was the manager and part owner of the Star of Hope Mine where it was found. The “nugget” was broken up and smelted except for a piece that Holtermann chipped off for a souvenir. Fifth Largest Nugget: Hand of Faith Nugget - This 61 lb. 11oz nugget was found in 1980 in Western Australia and is the largest nugget on public display in the world. Using a metal detector, it was found lying in a vertical position just below the surface by Kevin Hillier behind his trailer home. It was sold to the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino for a million dollars and is now on display at that casino in Las Vegas. Fourth Largest Nugget: Serra Pelada Nugget - Found in Serra Pelada (Bare Mountain), Brazil in 1983 by Julio de Deus Filho. It weighed about 136 pounds. Serra Pelada was like the California gold rush in 1849. Over 100,000 prospectors descended on Serra Pe-
lada until the government stepped in claiming that all mineral rights belonged to the government. Later, in 1990, the miners hit water flooding the 330-foot deep pit that turned the pit into a lake overnight drowning many miners. The nugget is displayed at the “Money Worlds’s Largest Nugget: Welcome Stranger Nugget Museum” at the Banco Censize at the time, it was broken up into three tral of Brazil in Brazilia. Affinity Gaming: Three casinos, one family Golden Mardi Gras, Golden Gates and Golden Gulch offer entertainment galore By Vi Cooper
Visitors to any of the three Affinity Gaming casinos, Golden Mardi Gras, Golden Gates and Golden Gulch, are in for a surprise. Since acquiring the properties in November 2012, Affinity has completely reenergized their venues, installing escalators, remodeling elevators, the addition of an all new buffet, remodeling the poker room, the addition of more than 250 of the newest slots and the launch of the A-Play Club, one of the best clubs in town. “If you have not been in lately, please come see us. Our team is capable of delivering the best gaming experience in Black Hawk and guest service is our top priority. We want our three casinos to be everyone’s first choice when they think about spending time in Black Hawk,” said Director of Marketing Elizabeth Palar. With the Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlor being the home of the Heartland Poker Tour and the Colorado Poker Championship, Affinity’s reputation as the best poker room in town has grown exponentially. The Colorado Poker Championship starts on Friday, Aug. 15 through Monday, Sept. 1. The Heartland Poker Tour
begins Friday, Sept. 5 and runs through Monday, Sept. 15, with both events taking place in Golden Gates’ expanded poker room. Players must be 21 years of age to enter and top prizes are running upwards of $200,000. At the three casinos, players can choose from more than 1,100 slot machines, 32 exciting table games, including video poker, video baccarat, blackjack, craps, roulette and three-card poker. Affinity’s Golden Gulch is one of the last all-coin casinos in Black Hawk. At
the Mardi Gras, with its theme of colorful New Orleans-style casino games, there is even a selection of traditional three-reel, pull-handle slots for the sentimental gamer. Also at the Mardi Gras, there are some 750 slot and video poker machines with the modern ease of ticket-in, ticket-out technology, so that winners are not weighed down with pockets full of change. With promotions aimed at rewarding loyal guests as well as drawing new visitors, Affinity’s casinos are offering a variety of ways
to win big money. Their “MillionDollar Summer” offers more than 250 players a chance to become a millionaire. Two winners per drawing, four drawings on Fridays and five drawings on Saturdays, with bonus drawings on Labor Day weekend, increase the odds of winning. The “$60,000 Sizzlin’ Sunday” drawings, held hourly from 1 – 5 p.m., let A-Play Club members earn an entry for every 100 base points or 30 minutes of tracked table games or live poker play. There will be two winners at each drawing and winners must be present. The “Treasure Hunt Progressive Finale” guarantees $30,000 to one lucky winner on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 10 p.m., when names will be drawn until a winner is present. Players earn one entry for every 10 base points on slots or 30 minutes of tracked table games. If you have played at any of the three Affinity Casinos over the last year, you have valid entries in the Treasure Hunt drawing and you could be $30,000 richer. Nifty 50+ promotions on Mondays and Fabulous 40+ promotions on Wednesday lets A-Play Club members who are aged 50 and better and 40 and better receive 50 percent off all food items when paying with points. The program also lets players pick their perk and receive 5X Points on slots, play a kiosk game for a chance to win up to $500 or choose to participate in the Nifty
50/Fabulous 40-slot tournament with $1,000 in prizes. With multiple food options, the Affinity properties have everyone’s preferences covered. The Bourbon Street Cafe and Buffet offers high quality and a wide range of offerings to diners who want an upscale selection at bargain prices. For a Tuesday lunch, the buffet had a variety of foods that included mashed potatoes, gravy, mixed vegetables, Cajun chicken, Salisbury steak, dirty rice, pot stickers, cabbage rolls, fried shrimp, catfish, mussels, crawfish, clarified butter, crab legs and hand-carved tri-tip steak. Additions include lasagna, various pastas, Panini, pilafs and risotto. An expansive salad bar features a variety of options, including romaine and spinach with all the fixings, plus boiled shrimp with lemon and cocktail sauce, fresh crab and potato salads. The dessert tables offer a chocolate fountain with fresh strawberries, pineapple, marshmallows and crispy treats, as well as cakes, pie and other sweet treats. According to responses from recent surveys, the Bourbon Street’s salad bar and desserts rated five stars. Buffet prices are very reasonable with breakfast on Fridays $6.99, lunch $9.99, dinner $16.99, Seafood Feast Fridays $19.99 (with crab legs and a lobster tail), Super Saturday Feast $19.99 (also includes crab legs and a lobster tail) and Champagne brunch on Saturday and Sunday $15.99. Those prices increase by $1 for breakfast and lunch and $2 for dinner and brunch without an A-Play card. There is also an allnew breakfast menu at Lucky’s, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., on the second floor of the Mardi Gras. Food is served at all three Affinity properties, including the Golden Gulch, where you can enjoy hot dogs and snacks.

Peak to Creek Duck Race a winner for area youth By Linda Jones
On July 26, a beautiful Saturday afternoon between the quick rainstorms blowing over - the 11th annual Peak to Creek Rotary Duck Race floated its way down North Clear Creek in Black Hawk. The City of Black Hawk had agreed to close Main Street and the Mardi Gras Casino filled it with music and food. Duck race headquarters occupied the Mardi Gras patio and attracted quite a crowd, with many “adopting” a duck in the Citizens Race, hoping to win the Grand Prize of $1,000. Residents of several states gathered on the river walk alongside the Mardi Gras to watch the two races; the Sponsor’s Race, featuring the large 8-inch ducks wearing sunglasses and the Citizen’s Race, where endearing little blue, yellow and pink ducks lazily meander down the creek. In the main race, the winning duck’s number tracked it, via computer, to adopter Ed Vermillion from Limon. Ed had stopped by race headquarters to join the fun and adopted one
Ameristar’s fleet
duck, but it paid off handsomely for him. He went home $1,000 richer. Other prizes were won by adopters across Colorado and three prize winners were from other states, two from Illinois and one from Alabama. In the Sponsor’s Race, each casino sponsor is represented by one large duck and The Lodge duck looked like a sure winner. It floated
a true course down the middle of North Clear Creek and was well ahead of the rest of the flock until almost the finish net, when it was caught in a whirlpool and swirled helplessly as several other sponsor ducks sailed by. The Monarch fowl won the Sponsor’s Race. The decorated duck fleets this year were unusually creative and several of them deserve special mention. Lady Luck reproduced a rafting scene, complete with popular brews on-board for après-rafting. Saratoga tapped into popular culture, creating Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper and Boy George lookalikes. Monarch’s clever duck fleet held a winning hand; big playing cards held by their ducks created a Royal Straight Splash. Mardi Gras created The Quacking Dead, including some

Dorothy carried Toto and the Tinman, Scarecrow and Lion accompanied her; the Wicked Witch menaced the group. The innovative diorama of Jurassic Park, created by the IGT crew, included dinosaurs (of course) which drew all the kids’ eyes and even a ranger is his official park vehicle. This year’s race was a financial winner for the youth projects of the Peak to Peak Rotary. These include sponsoring the Interact club, a service club, in Gilpin High School, sponsoring students for leadership camps from both Gilpin and Nederland High Schools, giving scholarships to both high schools and other awards. Credit for this year’s success goes to our generous sponsors in Black Hawk and Central City: Ameristar, Canyon, Century, Colorado Gambler, IGT, Isle Casino Hotel, Lady Luck, The Lodge, Mardi Gras, Monarch and Saratoga.

Colorado History ‘Images of America’ covers a lot of Colorado Territory

ith the publishing industry in decline, it’s become harder for Colorado history buffs to find affordable and easily accessible books on local history. Enter the “Images of America” series, which can be found anywhere from Amazon.com to Walgreens. Published by Arcadia in Charleston, S.C., Images has carved a niche in a certain market, publishing thousands of books on local history. Originally, the quality of photographs left a lot to be desired, but Arcadia has come a long way in the last few years. The books all look somewhat alike, with the same dimensions and a sepia-toned photo relating to the topic on the cover. Not to be dismissed, these ubiquitous paperbacks each tell the story, primarily through historic photos with some explanatory text, of a neighborhood, a landmark, an ethnic community, local architecture or hundreds of other topics sometimes given short shrift in other history books. A lot depends on the talents of the storyteller, which varies, along with the quality of photos, always black and white. The three publications listed below are particularly well done. Denver’s Historic Homes By Amy Zimmer Zimmer is a talented historian who also has published an Arcadia book on Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Her treatment of historic homes is very professional, although somewhat esoteric for those not familiar with architectural particulars, (A glossary of popular styles with short descriptions would have been helpful, as well as an index.) To her credit, Zimmer focuses as much on the owners as she does on the houses, which makes the book more interesting. Photos

include homes long demolished, like Silver King Horace Tabor’s mansion at 17th and Broadway, where his first wife, Augusta, lived out her life minus the errant husband. Some of these spectacular structures are still standing, although many have been repurposed. The elegant domain of society queen Louise Hill at Ninth and Sherman, for example, now serves as law offices. Tweet Kimball’s glorious castle in Sedalia is now a museum and performing arts venue and the elegant GrantHumphreys mansion, now owned by the Colorado Historical Society, is an event venue. Apartment and commercial structures are occasionally included, as well as drawings and cityscapes. Irish Denver By Dennis Gallagher, Tom Noel and James Patrick Walsh Irish Denver is by far one of the best books on Denver history Arcadia has produced, perhaps it because it was written by three college professors who are also excellent writers. Denver City Auditor Dennis Gallagher and Colorado historian Tom Noel are local celebrities known for their sharp
wit and comprehensive knowledge of local history, while Jim Walsh is founder of the Romero Theater Troupe, which brings nontraditional political history to the general public. Longer on text than many Images of America books, Irish Denver is fun to read and eloquently tells the success story of Colorado Irish and their wonderful legacy. As the authors tell it, the first Irish Coloradans were miners in Nevadaville (near Central City) and Leadville. Some, known as terriers, worked on the railroads. In the early days, Irish women who worked out of the home were usually domestics. By 1900, however, the Irish population in Denver had soared, and successful Irish businessmen were making their mark, such as John Kernan Mullen, founder of the Colorado Milling
and Elevator Company. Irish immigrant Thomas Patrick Walsh became a multi-millionaire with his gold discovery at the Camp Bird Mine in the San Juan Mountains. Tom Walsh entertained President Howard Taft at his Wolhurst mansion and purchased the Hope Diamond for his daughter, Evalyn Walsh McLean. The book also delves into the history of the Irish labor movement, particularly the United Mine Workers and Irish widow Mother Jones, a fiery 80-year-old labor leader. The Irish Catholic Church

in Denver also figures prominently, as do the Irish Catholic politicians like former Mayor Tom Currigan and former governors Steve McNichols and Bill Owens.
Denver’s Washington Park By Sarah O. McCarthy One of the city’s finest reminders of late 19th and early 20th century Denver, the Washington Park neighborhood is distinctive both in architecture and population. Designated one of the “Great Public Spaces in America” by the American Planning Association (2012), the park was primarily designed by architect Reinhard Schuetze. Wash Park opened in 1899, a glowing example of Mayor Robert Speer’s “City Beautiful” efforts. Allegedly, the twin lakes were originally a buffalo wallow. Although the author does not make this clear (a map would have been helpful), the neighborhood can be divided between the eastern and western sides with Downing Street as the dividing line. Each side has its own distinct characteristics and neighborhood association. The Park area was originally part of South Denver, which annexed to Denver in 1894 after the Silver Crash of 1893. One of the city’s most ecologically conscious neighborhoods, Wash Park has for the most part stayed true to its original plan. Architecture is chiefly bungalow style, craftsman and Italianate, with a few Denver Squares thrown in for good measure. This book is well written and informative, and provides impressive photos of the area, including a 1920s aerial of the park. An index would have been useful, but these are rare in Images publications. According to the book’s biography, the author is a 30-year Washington Park “activist.”

espite earning a degree in dentistry at the age of 20 from Pennsylvania College, John Henry Holliday is best known in history as a gambler and a killer. Surprisingly, while in Colorado, he never killed anyone. “Doc” Holliday, having been diagnosed with tuberculosis, came west for his health in 1873. He spent time in New Mexico and Texas where he made gambling his sole source of income. It was in Texas, in January 1875, that Holliday became involved in the first of many gunfights, a shootout with Charles Austin, owner of a popular Dallas saloon. While Austin was not killed, Holliday was nonetheless run out of town. Following this episode, Holliday made his first trip to Colorado, traveled the well-known gambling circuits, often staying at Army outposts along the way. In the summer of 1875 he was living in Denver under the alias “Tom Mackey.” He found work as a faro dealer for Charles Foster at the infamous Babbitt House, located at 357 Blake St. It was here that Holliday got into a heated argument with Bud Ryan, a well-known gambling tough. The argument turned deadly when both men drew knifes. (Denver had a strict gun ordinance at the time.) Eyewitnesses said Ryan drew first, where upon Holliday then drew his knife from his breast pocket. In the deadly knife fight, Holliday quickly gained the upper hand and managed to slash Ryan a few times. While his wounds were serious, Ryan did recover. However, the ensuing police investigation resulted in uncovering Holliday’s true identity. The Denver Republican reported the finding in a bit of yellow journalism: “The ‘Doc’ had taken the name of ‘Tom Mackey.’ He is a quiet, modest man, with a smile that is childlike and bland; he is generally regarded as very inoffensive, but one night he electrified the town by nearly cutting off the head of Budd [sic] Ryan, a well known Denver gambler. ‘Doc’ Holliday, alias ‘Tom Mackey, is a little better known in Denver [now].” With his identity revealed, Holliday left Denver, following the

Earp would always credit Holliday with saving his life. Holliday intended to do the same, if need be, on that infamous day of Oct. 29, 1881. Let it sit for several hours, even overnight. Now wipe it clean, and buff with a soft clean cloth.

Green no longer just describes a vibrant color of nature; now it’s a way of thinking and living. What does it mean to be living green? Does it mean to be thrifty and live simply? Does it mean to respect and protect our environment? I believe the answer is “yes” to these questions. Living green involves simplicity, moderation, and respect. First of all, I think it means to avoid extravagance and to live more simply. Don’t collect stuff that you may never use or buy things just because they are on sale – unless it is something basic like toilet paper that doesn’t expire. Going green also is an invitation to recycle, become thriftier and respect our environment.
