Concert in Centennial to welcome ex-Moody Blue and others By Peter Jones enny Laine is more than happy to reminisce about the British Invasion, the mid-1960s influx of English bands to the shores and pop charts of North America. But the singer-guitarist from Birmingham, England, is quick to say the musical incursion would have never happened without the American invasion of Britain during the 1950s. “We listened to all your music as kids growing up after the war. We were so influenced by American music,” he said, emphasizing the effect of artists like Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly on the Beatles and the battalions of British acts that followed the band’s 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. “The whole John and Paul thing came from the Everly Brothers. Paul would be the first to say that.” Laine is well qualified to make such observations, having been a lieutenant in the mid-‘60s musical takeover. He was an original member of the Moody Blues before serving under Cream founder

D

Ginger Baker and becoming an integral part of Wings with Paul McCartney. Valley of Dreams, Laine’s upcoming solo album, will be a firsthand remembrance of that transcontinental exchange of musical influence. “It’s an Englishman’s point of view as a songwriter being influenced by American music, because that’s where it all came from anyway,” he said. Laine will join Peter Asher of Peter and Gordon and Terry Sylvester of the Hollies for The British Invasion: 50 Years On, a tribute to the conquest’s golden anniversary on Wednesday, July 30, at Centennial Center Park, an increasingly popular venue for national and local concerts. The show will benefit the Colorado Freedom Memorial, a planned tribute to the 6,000 Coloradans killed or missing in action. Born Brian Hines in Birmingham, England, in 1944, Laine was essentially trapped for a lifetime by a stage name he assumed as the teenaged leader of Denny Laine and the Diplomats. When that band failed in its diplomacy with record labels, he joined the Moody Blues, a burgeoning band on the city’s rhythm and blues scene. Continued on page 2

County has money for some who lost to foreclosure Funds in excess of loan amount returned to former owners

By Peter Jones There may be a bright side to life after foreclosure – believe it or not – and the Arapahoe County Public Trustee’s Office is trying to shine a little light on it. About 30 onetime county residents who lost their homes during the recent U.S. foreclosure crisis could be getting a check of between $500 and $200,000 if their name is on a list of recipients who are owed money from their former home’s sale. Those several dozen former homeowners have been difficult to locate in an era of fewer landlines and changing

addresses, Public Trustee Cynthia Mares said. “We do everything we can to locate them,” she said. “We want them to get their money. We don’t want to have to go searching for them.” The money is waiting because the individuals’ foreclosed former homes sold for more than was owed on their defaulted loans. The recent rise in home prices followed a period when many of the same owners were unable to sell their homes at prices that allowed them to avoid foreclosure. “For some reason, we seem to be getting more activity on this than other counties. The market is turning up a little bit more,” Mares said. “Last year, we probably had a few overbids, but not much. Now, we’re seeing so much action on

this.” The trustee will hold such excess proceeds – currently totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars – until the former homeowners collect the money. But if the money is not claimed within five years, the assets are sent to the Colorado State Treasurer’s Great Colorado Payback, which makes further efforts to contact those who have legal claim to a wide variety of lost accounts and vacated funds. Mares says those who have had their homes foreclosed in the last five years should check her office’s website or contact the Public Trustee’s Office to find out if their name is on the list. Assistance from any outside agent to assist with the process is unnecessary and potentially expensive, she said. “We get these calls constantly

from agents wanting to find this money for individuals,” Mares said. “If the agent finds them before we do, not knowing that we’re not going to do anything with that money but look for the homeowner, they could be charged as much as 40 percent.” Mares recommends former homeowners contact the Colorado Supreme Court or the Attorney General’s Office if they believe they have been unfairly charged. The trustee’s office has posted the names of overbid recipients on its website and has sent legal notices on the matter to such newspapers as The Villager, but inevitably some former homeowners remain elusive. To contact the trustee’s office, call 303-730-0071 or visit www. arapahoegov.com.

Liverpool being a port and Birmingham being a factory town, you get exposed to a lot of different music,” Laine said. On the strength of the Moodys’ first hit, “Go Now,” sung by Laine, the band toured with the Beatles in 1964, but were lost in the shuffle of more raw British

groups like the Rolling Stones and the Animals. Moody and blue over poor sales, Laine quit after the first album, just before the band made its name in symphonic rock. “If I hadn’t left the Moody Blues, they probably wouldn’t have been as famous. They had to go in a different direction because I wasn’t in the band anymore. After all, I’m more of a blues-type person. That’s why it was called the Moody Blues,” Laine said. Peakview Ave. Tickets available at www.modtickets.com. The disbanding may have also been tied to McCartney’s shock over ex-bandmate John Lennon’s murder. “I was sitting with Paul the day John died,” Laine recalled. “He came in the studio because he didn’t want to stay home. He wanted to do something to keep his mind from wandering. We sat and talked about everything.” Laine eventually returned to his low-profile solo career and live appearances, such as the upcoming British Invasion celebration in Centennial. “It goes down really well,” he said of the nostalgic evening with Asher and Sylvester. “There’s a lot of stories there. By Peter Jones Peter Asher may be the Renaissance man of the music industry. In a career spanning 50 years, Asher has done it all – from recording as an artist to writing music and producing and managing other musicians. He was one half of the British singing duo Peter and Gordon before he took a job at the Beatles’ Apple Records and went on to discover James Taylor and produce and manage the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, among many others. Asher’s actressmodel sister Jane was for a time Paul McCartney’s girlfriend. In advance of Asher’s participation in The British Invasion: 50 Years On, July 30, at Centennial’s Center Park, The Villager spoke with the 70-year-old artist. Villager: As a testament to this 50th anniversary, you’ll be appearing in Colorado on what is almost the 50th anniversary of Peter and Gordon’s debut at Red Rocks. Asher: Somebody told me that. That’s amazing. I don’t remember the gig particularly well. I do remember seeing Red Rocks for the first time and thinking what a great place it was. Of course, I’ve been there many times since when James Taylor or Linda Ronstadt or people I was managing played there. It’s

obviously one of the most magical arenas in America. Villager: The Beatles remembered using an oxygen machine when they played there the same year – first, turning down the offer, then changing their minds. Asher: This was a different era. If anybody offered you anything to inhale, you’d go, “Sure!” (laughs) Villager: In the mid-‘60s when Paul McCartney was dating your sister Jane, it was reported that all three of you were living under the same roof with your parents, which seemed a little odd from the American fan’s perspective. Asher: There was a guest

room on the top of the house next to mine. I wouldn’t consider it strange, but you may choose to (laughs). I first heard “World Without Love” when Paul was living next door to me. That was our first hit. When we got a record deal, I remembered hearing this unfinished song the Beatles were not recording. At that point, I went back to Paul to ask if we could have it. Villager: Later, you worked for the Beatles’ Apple Records, a job you quit to manage James Taylor, who was a virtual unknown at the time. Asher: That’s true, but – there’s a big but – I knew I was going to get fired from Apple anyway. [Beatles manager] Allen Klein was clearly going to fire everybody when he moved in. I knew Allen Klein was coming and I didn’t like him. I did batten my career on James’s and went to America with him.

Peter Bell, president of the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association, was in Greenwood Village last week to discuss the often-confusing refinance product. With longer lifespans, Bell says aging boomers will increasingly have to look at their homes as financial assets.

Making sense of a reverse mortgage Boomers seeking ways to fund longevity By Peter Jones Have you ever wondered if a reverse mortgage is right for you? Bet you’ve heard that one before – perhaps on television commercials, starring the likes of Fred Thompson or Henry Winkler. More to the point, what exactly is a reverse mortgage – and isn’t anything with a name like that too good to be true? Is it really a mortgage that pays you – not the other way around? Peter Bell, president of the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association, was in Greenwood Village last week to talk about the changing face of a mortgage product that many have dismissed as a last resort for the elderly indigent. Denver is one of three cities, along with Seattle and Philadelphia, that the Washington, D.C.based trade organization has targeted for a months-long marketing and public-information campaign focused on the often-confusing refinancing option created by Congress in the late 1980s. As Bell, 61, explained in an interview with The Villager, it may be increasingly important for aging baby boomers to think of their house as more of a functional financial asset than an object of inheritance for their children. Villager: What exactly is a reverse mortgage? Bell: It’s no different than a home-equity loan with the exception that it has a deferred-payment feature. You draw out the money while you’re living there and then the loan becomes due and payable, plus the interest that has accrued over time. Unlike a home-equity loan, it’s patient money. The lender will wait until you permanently leave the home to collect. Villager: So when you die, instead of inheriting a home, your kids inherit debt? Bell: They don’t inherit a debt, but if the balance is bigger than the value of the home, then the home will be used to pay it off. No matter how much you owe in the end, you’ll never owe more

No matter how much you owe in the end, you’ll never owe more than the current value of the home. - Peter Bell, president of the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association than the current value of the home. For instance, if the balance due is $300,000 and the house is worth $250,000, the lender will accept the payoff at $250,000. Your kids would never owe money. What’s interesting is at least half of the loans are originated by kids. Mom and Dad are struggling to make ends meet. The kids say, “This is your wealth. Don’t worry about us.” Villager: How can lenders afford to take that loss? Bell: The loans are all FHAinsured. If the lenders come up short, they have the ability to file an insurance claim with HUD and have FHA pay them back. Because of that, HUD is highly regulated. Every one of the borrowers has to go out to a third party for counseling required by statute. [Some have said] if the rest of mortgages had that same safeguard, we wouldn’t have had the meltdown. Villager: Surely you can’t take more money than your home is worth. Bell: Yes and no. You get a percentage of the value of the home based on your age. If you’re younger, presumably you’ll be there longer, so more of the value will be used for interest that will accrue. Therefore, you get a lesser benefit. If your age at 70 gave you 60 percent of value, you could take it all upfront as a lump sum, you could set it up as a line of credit, or you could calculate fixed monthly payments.

Villager: Would you still be making house payments? Bell: No. This has to be the primary lien on the property. Some of the proceeds will be used to payoff that mortgage. The balance is available to the homeowner. Villager: These mortgages aren’t right for everyone. Are they still primarily for seniors with financial challenges? Bell: Historically, that’s the way it’s been looked at, but that’s really the change. The big challenge for us as a society is funding longevity. My grandparents worked till age 70 and passed away at 78. They had eight years of retirement. My dad worked till 65 and now he’s 90. How do we make those resources last? When you look at boomers, there’s 60 to 70 million of us approaching retirement and half have no savings other than the wealth in their homes. Clearly, home equity has to be part of the funding-longevity equation. Villager: When should that become a part of the equation? Bell: Once upon a time, the thinking was – and some consumer advocates still say this – that you should spend everything else first. What happens is people are often forced to sell assets, either bonds before maturity or sell stocks into a down market. If you take the money out of the reverse mortgage, you can hold onto your other assets and let them recover in value or continue to generate dividends. The net result is you have a higher amount of wealth through your lifespan. Villager: Who is a reverse mortgage not right for? Bell: People who don’t expect to be in their house for a while. Because you are paying some upfront fees, which could be paid out of the loan proceeds. If you’re buying shorter term, there might be more cost-effective ways to do it. Villager: You’ll be eligible for this in a year. Are you going to get a reverse mortgage at age 62? Bell: I won’t do it right away. I have a big mortgage, so it would not give me enough to pay off my current mortgage. You have to have enough equity to retire that debt.

Thanks to God and United States Postal Service KINDLING

By Robert Sweeney

I think that Benjamin Franklin was instrumental in founding mail service in the early day colonies of America. He published his papers and very quickly found that printing was one thing, but delivering the product in a timely fashion was just as important. If the news doesn’t get delivered – all is lost. And that is still true several centuries later with the U.S. Postal Service still delivering the mail door-to-door. I’ve admired the USPS for

years, delivering the mail through sunny or stormy weather, figuring out addresses, reading people’s minds on where the mail should really go. We find in the newspaper world that about one-third of the addresses change every year. People do move around a lot and it takes considerable work to keep track of where to send mail. And, of course, now we have email that is so handy but it is still nice to receive real mail, such as an elegant written letter or a birthday card. I love the email cards from Edie Marks, but going out to the mailbox and bringing in the mail is just a great tradition. But the mail must get through just like the show must go on… I really like the folks out at the Arapahoe post office and have been dealing with Cheryl and staff on bulk mail for more than 30 years of mailing The Villager every Wednesday morning. We could all write books on that process. But, most recently I read this

story, courtesy of Pat McMahon, in the Celtic Connection Irish newspaper that I found quite touching.

Post Office

There was a man who worked for the post office whose job was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses. One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to God with no actual address. He thought he should open it to see what it was about. The letter read, “Dear God, I am an 83-year-old widow, living on a very small pension. Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had $100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment. Next Sunday is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. “Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope…Can you please help me? Sincerely, Edna.” The postal worker was touched. He showed the letter to

all the other workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few dollars. By the time he made the rounds, he had collected $96, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman. The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends. Christmas came and went. A few days later, another letter came from the same old lady to God. All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened. It read, “Dear God, How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me? Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift. By the way, there was $4 missing. I think it might have been those bastards at the post office. Sincerely, Edna.” Put some cookies and candy in the mailbox for your mail person today.

GLORYUS GOINGS ON

Why have sports become so popular? The answer may lie in the fact that it’s an area of our society where no one worries about another person’s race, religion or wealth and the only questions to be resolved are, “Who’s the best?” and “Who’s No. 1?” and where winning is not considered a dirty word or “politically incorrect.” Having said all that, let’s “lighten up” with some sports humor – but first of all, here are a couple of so-called sports experts who really “struck-out” with their predictions. local Sunni Arab Iraqi insurgents joined forces with jihadist’s to fight what they perceived as their common enemies. However, this was not a natural alliance and once the Sunni Arabs saw hope for a future in a more inclusive pluralistic Iraqi government, with our assistance, they turned against the radical Islamists forces who were terrorizing their communities and imposing beliefs that were objectionable to local Sunni Arab tribal and religious leaders. Areas in Iraq not dominated by disaffected Sunni Arabs are not in danger of falling to the ISIS-led opposition forces and a successful conventional military operation will only drive the insurgency underground where they can wage a guerrilla war against the Iraqi government without end. The time is now to put pressure on the Iraqi government to change. That is our only hope and sending a contingent of U.S. military personnel, no matter how small, will be counterproductive to that goal. Our presence will merely send a message to the Malaki government that we will support them despite what they have done and continue to do to destroy the country by oppressing the Sunni Arab population. Coffman is the chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and served for a combined 21 years between the U.S. Army, the Army Reserve, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the Marine Corps Reserve. Coffman is the only veteran in the Colorado delegation and the only Member of Congress to have served in both the first Gulf War and in the Iraq War.

Letters to the Editor Same old pretense

For more than 100 years, the label “progressive” has been used to imply visionary reform. But that misleading jargon cloaks historic reality, for the so-called “progressive” program is not new or enlightened. Rather, that design is as old as government itself. From pharaohs to monarchs to emperors to führers, governments seek ever greater control – absolute, unchallenged, unquestioned. The pretense has always been that the government will protect and provide; instead, that lure historically leads to dependency and serfdom. The ancient goal is oppressive totalitarianism, disguised as benevolence. True visionaries, like our nation’s founders, do not manage us as hapless dependents. Thus they limit governmental interference in your life and livelihood because they view us as free, competent adults. Isn’t that how you want to be treated? Peg Brady Centennial

Udall ignores the law again

Last week, Colorado U.S. Sen. Mark Udall introduced a bill called “Protect Women’s Health from Corporate Interference,” which would mandate that Christian employers pay for employees’ contraceptive coverage even though that would violate the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Newsflash to Udall: The Supreme Court just

ruled that this is against the law. Usually Udall is notoriously quiet about broken laws. For example, when Obama made illegal recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board (which the Supreme Court just overturned), what did we hear from Udall? Silence. When Obama made some 30 odd illegal changes to Obamacare, done without the required congressional vote, again only silence from Udall. So if Udall is not spending time trying to uphold the law of the land, what is he doing? Alas, one of his emails trumpets him spending a lot of time picking a Christmas tree for the White House. How disappointing. The people of Colorado deserve better. It’s time to vote out Udall. He can’t see the forest for the trees. Charles Newton Highlands Ranch

rapahoe County commissioners and local mayors and city council members honored 31 teenagers, ages 13-19, from area high schools who have overcome significant personal adversity during the Arapahoe County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award Program recognition ceremony. The commissioners also awarded nine $1,000 college scholarships. Arapahoe County Commissioners Nancy Doty, Nancy Sharpe, Rod Bockenfeld, Nancy Jackson and Bill Holen and Undersheriff Louie Perea were joined by Englewood Mayor Pro Tem Linda Olson, Greenwood Village Mayor Ron Rakowsky, Littleton Mayor Phil Cernanec, Cherry Hills Village Mayor Doug Tisdale, Centennial Councilmember Keith Gardner, Centennial Commissions Coordinator Angela Engel, Centennial Youth Commissioners Lily Boettcher, Conner Piko and Marlena McClellan, and area city council members to recognize this inspirational group of young adults. The annual program honors and recognizes Arapahoe County youth who have risen to meet challenges while maintaining ac-

ademic excellence and a positive attitude. They are nominated by their school counselors, teachers, mentors and parents. The Colorado Community College System Financial Aid Council awards one scholarship annually per county. This year, the county commissioners solicited donations to fund additional scholarships. Seven scholarships were made possible by donations to the Arapahoe County Foundation and two were made possible through funds from the Centennial Airport Foundation.
Scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors: Connie Appiah (Hinkley High School), Andrea Guardado (Options High School), Kayia Hardin-Lawson (Cherokee Trail High School), Maria Johnsen (Colorado’s Finest Alternative High School), Ncog “Mary” Le (Heritage High School), Javier Lopez (Colorado’s Finest Alternative High School), Ivy Ryan (Englewood High School), Trent Sears (Heritage High School), Josephine Thames (Options High School) Commissioner Jackson, a former professor who taught for many years at local colleges and at the Community College of Aurora, helped coordinate this year’s

event.
“These young people have met and overcome major obstacles in their personal lives and still kept their priorities straight,” Jackson said. “They’ve worked hard academically, set positive goals and volunteered in their communities. Their perseverance and drive will help them succeed at any endeavor.”
The teens have overcome situations including living with economic hardship or a disability, overcoming physical or emotional challenges, providing financial or emotional support to family members, caring for a sick or elderly parent, losing or living without a parent or sibling, or having English spoken as a second language at home. “This year, I made it my goal to maintain grades that I am proud of, rather than grades I will settle for,” said student Kayia Hardin-Lawson from Cherokee Trail High School. “Being successful, always challenging me and helping others are my lifelong goals,” said student Josephine Thames from Options High School. “I give help because I know what it is like to need help.”

By Tom Barry Organizers of a planned threeday rock music festival in eastern Arapahoe County have filed a formal appeal to the denial of their request for a permit – despite plans to now hold the event at Sports Authority Field, Sept. 19 – 21. The concert promoters have retained Denver law firm Dill Dill Carr Stonbraker & Hutchings PC to represent them before the county’s Board of Adjustment. They have paid $911 to schedule a special meeting slotted for Thursday, Aug. 14, at 1 p.m. in the county’s South Lima Street complex. “The zoning administrator’s denial … is improper, is not support[ed] by fact or law, and is an abuse of discretion,” the filing says. “Additionally, the applicant was not afforded the same policies and procedures as similarly situated applicants, including the processes that were afforded to the applicant when the [concert] was approved in 2013.” Chicago-based Riot Fest had anticipated as many as 17,500 people at their late-September concert at May Farms in Byers before the permit was denied by Tammy King, the county’s zoning administrator. “Based upon the information I have received, I am compelled to conclude that approving the [application] will negatively impact

For now, Riot Fest is planned to be held at Sports Authority Field, Sept. 19 – 21. surrounding property owners and uses,” she said in her denial earlier this month. May Farms had plans to provide a large area for camping that Sports Authority Field will not be able to accommodate to the disappointment of some participants. Riot Fest still plans to bring part of that farm experience to the event. Organizers have said they will fill a parking lot with turf, farm equipment and haystacks to recreate the rural ambiance of last year’s concert. This year’s concerts are expected to feature more than 60 groups on multiple stages during the three days. After the county’s ruling, Riot Fest co-founder and managing partner Mike Petryshyn apologized to ticket holders, saying campers would be refunded their extra fee.

In a 1,000-word rant on the Riot Fest website, Petryshyn said, “I am utterly incensed. Elementary ideological forces and manipulation veiled in contradictory legal jargon prevented us from coming back to May Farms this year. Simply, we were duped. Certain groups, residents and so forth did not want YOU or US in their town, and there is something morally dishonest and unforgiveable with their actions.” The open letter was signed, “Your grateful chum, Riot Mike.” At press time, Arapahoe County’s spokeswoman declined to provide any comments or address questions. Riot Fest organizers did not reply to an email request. County staff have said previously that last year’s Riot Fest went well at May Farms after minimal issues were worked out.

Kempe Salt on the Rim a Mexican themed delight at Wellshire Event Center

By Glory Weisberg

“N

ever shake a baby,” is the slogan of a video viewed often on 9News by anchor, Cheryl Preheim, advising also that if you are so annoyed by an infant’s continued crying, put the baby down in a safe place and walk away. That message is from the Kempe Children’s Foundation, which had its Salt on the Rim Margarita gathering at the Wellshire Event Center. It was quite a success, drawing in the nonprofit’s ongoing sustainers and new guests who munched on hot Mexican-style hors d’oeuvres before lining up to enjoy the extensive buffet in the event center’s elegant white air conditioned tent. This was one great idea for cocktail clothed guests, not having to worry about soaring early evening temperatures. Brass Ring Luncheon kicks off at Kuni Lexus of Greenwood Village

I

f you want men to come to a kickoff, hold it at an auto dealership. We’ve witnessed this phenomenon one other time, several years ago, and it worked. This time the kickoff was in Greenwood Village, at the awesome new Kuni Lexus of Greenwood Village digs and the dinnertime gathering was the Children’s Diabetes Foundation Brass Ring Luncheon and Fashion Show kickoff. About 120 people RSVPd and many couples enjoyed chicken

skewers and other goodies from Biscuits & Berries, luncheon Chairwoman Lyn Schaffer’s favorite caterer. Sharon Whiton Gelt chaired the kickoff. The biggest news was that the fashion show will feature the spring 2015 Carlisle clothing line. Representative Tangy Buchanan was on hand to chat it up with likely ticket buyers.

The Nov. 6 Brass Ring Luncheon is back at the Marriott City Center and there to represent the hotel was Senior Catering Sales Manager Charlotte Mervin. This luncheon begins at 9:30 a.m. so there’s plenty of time to checkin and bid on the silent auction and check out the Jewels of Hope tables. Women bring costume and valuable jewelry they no longer covet and

Rory Palazzo, Jody Sheahan and Susie Hummel donate them and often, they select a few items to buy as well. This is a bargain hunter’s paradise. Jewels of Hope leader, Jane Kranich, has an inventory of costume and estate jewelry. There at the kickoff was CDF Executive Director Bertha Lynn and Event Coordinator Susie Hummel. On the luncheon committee are auction chair Eva Schoonmaker, Judy McNeil, Shelley Lucas, Cheryl Doyle, Christy Alberts, Sally Newcomb, Diana Docktor, Karen Fisher, Kathy Crapo, Adrienne Ruston Fitzgibbons, Ilene Milstein, Cheryl Doyle, Chris Foster and Barbara Feeney. This luncheon sells out quickly so get your table together and call 303-863-1200.

We’ve been focusing on etiquette for children and on this installment we turn to children ages 11 to 14. As we’ve learned in recent years, at this age hormones surge ahead of other areas of development so impulsiveness and other behavior not necessarily welcomed by parents or teachers impact their lives. Valuing privacy, these kids may post a “do not enter” sign on their bedroom doors, show disrespect and in general, really still need etiquette education. To avoid awkward situations on back to school night, the student needs to know how to introduce one to the other. Parents, help your student learn how to introduce them

to a teacher. This young person is able to accept more responsibilities for family needs, completion of homework without being nagged and asked to help make some family decisions. Would you like to help with the dinner menu or help decide where to go on vacation. You should accept cellphone text or voice calls quietly, make it brief and say excuse me if you have to chat privately. Don’t keep your eyes downcast on that cell constantly when with others. Since it’s highly unlikely that anyone in this age group is an on-call physician, a student should shut off a cellphone during class or in formal situations, such as religious services. Be alert to refrain from negative, criticizing comments. If you receive such communication, refuse to participate in it. Never take or forward cell photos that can be embarrassing to you in coming years. Think twice before even taking and posting selfies or sexting that, in the future, could become a reason for a college admissions officer or business representative not to consider your college or employment application. Table manners by this age should be automatic. Look in the mirror and see how you really look when folding a large slice of pizza and attacking it in sloppy gulps. Wolfing is definitely not funny and is in poor taste for boys, as well as girls. Parents: set an example. gloryweisberg@comcast.net

Denver comes alive with ‘The Sound of Music’ Musical plays Aug. 2 – 10 at Ellie Caulkins Opera House Submitted by Central City Opera Audiences of all ages can hum along to their favorite songs like “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and title song “The Sound of Music” when Central City Opera brings to Denver one of the most popular Broadway productions of all time, The Sound of Music. Rodgers and Hammerstein II’s Tony Award winning musical, which was also an Academy Award winning movie, is Central City Opera’s final production for the 2014 Festival. The Sound of Music will be performed at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex for seven performances only from Aug. 2 – 10. Directed by Ken Cazan, who also directed CCO’s critically acclaimed production of Dead Man Walking this summer, The Sound of Music will be performed in English with a full live orchestra. Single tickets range from $30 to $106. Based on Maria von Trapp’s memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, Maria is a sweet

young nun-in-training whose love of freedom makes it obvious to her superiors that she is not quite suited for religious life. She is sent off to be the governess to Captain von Trapp’s seven troublesome children, and unlike past governess, Maria becomes friends with the children due to their mutual love of music. Even the strict captain begins to admire Maria and, eventually, the captain and Maria fall in love and are married. All seems right in the world of the von Trapps until the Nazis invade their homeland of Austria and the whole family is forced to flee over the Alps to escape. Cazan said, “I deeply admire the captain’s convictions to fight fascism…He chooses to demonstrate to his children that there are moments when one has to stand up for one’s beliefs, even though the penalty may be severe. I believe that he could not have done this without the support of Maria…Maria was a hearty, ‘peasant’ woman with strong religious convictions. In using those strengths to support the Captain, she empowers him and the children to move forward…to defy what was rapidly becoming the most heinous and infamous war

machine in the history of civilization.” The original Broadway production opened in 1959, and the show has enjoyed numerous productions and revivals since then. It was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and won five Academy Awards. In December 2013, NBC presented The Sound of Music starring Carrie Underwood in the first live musical broadcast on television in 56 years, which drew huge ratings with more than 18 million viewers. Many songs from the musical have become classics including “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “The Sound of Music,” “The Lonely Goatherd” and many more. Subscriptions for Central City Opera’s 2014 Festival start at just $56 and provide a 20 percent discount on single tickets. In addition to its slate of operas for 2014, CCO will continue to present innovative initiatives that will engage a broader audience with exciting enhancements to the Festival experience. rapahoe County Republican chief Joy Hoffman and husband Jim opened their Greenwood Village home to raise funds for Candice Benge, who is the Republican candidate with her eye on Democrat Daniel Kagan’s seat. “She’s a young, vibrant, new candidate,” said Joy Hoffman.

By Scottie Taylor Iverson

“This district is winnable,” said Benge. “There is much excitement and when I meet voters they also want to know my contact information for their sons and daughters to support a younger candidate. I am concerned about our state – businesses either leaving or not coming in. We need to do everything we can to bring business to Colorado and

take care of our core area. This is where we should be serving – with limited government.” Benge thanked her supporters that included many other candidates in attendance. “I have a large family which is a built-in work force,” said the long-time resident of HD 3, who has several years experience in the construction industry.

The host committee included Andi Allott, Evie Ashmore, Karen Blilie, Candy Figa, The Hoffmans, Edie Marks, Rep. Libby Szabo, Carol Waller and Mary Wenke. Colorado’s House District 3 includes Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village, Englewood, Sheridan and parts of unincorporated Arapahoe County.

CampExperience Annual Retreat for Amazing Women Women take a cue from kids In 2005, CampExperience Founder Betsy Wiersma and 15 friends collaborated. The brainstorming session pondered the possibility “what if we had a ‘summer camp’ for us…” By 2006, there was a Camp.

To date, the catalyst for positive personal and professional success has raised $247,000 for women’s empowerment charities, collected 30,000 pounds of donated goods for charity partners and touched the lives of a couple thousand women through its concept “Sisterhood by Choice” while having fun. “I was inspired to have a ‘pur-

pose built life’ around the parenting of our adopted baby girl (now 12 years old) and giving back to women. I needed a flexible career that used all my skills and talents for good. And I wanted women to ‘enjoy the ride’ and have fun on our journey,” Wiersma said. The organization’s calendar is packed with events meeting at set

venues, including Greenwood Village, twice per month to accommodate women living in various sectors of the metro area. The mission is to build lives, careers and connections while helping other women in need. The highlight of the year’s interactions is the CampExperience Annual Educational Retreat for Amazing Women.

Fran Gottlieb’s exhibit opens at Elements 5280 Gallery, Friday, July 25.

New equine paintings by Fran Gottlieb at Elements 5280 Gallery

Elements 5280 Gallery is proud to present the new works of Denver abstract impressionist, Fran Gottlieb. Known for her colorful portrayal of horses on large canvases, her paintings are full of contrasts, both in hue and composition. She describes her work as “abstracted impressions of horses – the horses are not so abstract that you can’t tell they’re horses!” This exhibit opens Friday, July 25. A native of Colorado, Gottlieb cared for and rode horses that boarded on her family’s farm in Wheat Ridge. And today, she continues to observe, sketch and paint horses whenever she has the opportunity. The familiarity she’s gained from working in the field allows Gottlieb to understand the anatomy of the animals and to establish likenesses of horses in a loose yet immediately recognizable image. ge Avera of Loss s in e 3 inch utes! in m 0 3

In the studio, using an easel that can accommodate eight-foot canvases, Gottlieb develops the painting’s design and then with her arm outstretched and the brush held with her fingertips, she uses thinned pigment to begin her drawing. From there, she applies rich color to create the shapes of the horses. Always simplified, the animals and their movements are captured with a minimum of brush strokes in pure Gottlieb style. Elements 5280 Gallery will be exhibiting Fran Gottlieb’s work from July 25 to Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The gallery is located in the Orchards Shopping Plaza at the corner of South Holly and Orchard Road. For more information, visit www. elements5280.com or call 303-8045280.

ConocoPhillips establishes ConocoPhillips Center for a Sustainable WE²ST

New center at Colorado School of Mines

Colorado School of Mines and ConocoPhillips announced the establishment of the ConocoPhillips Center for a Sustainable WE²ST (Water-Energy Education, Science and Technology) at Colorado School of Mines with a leadership investment of $3 million in the university. The center will focus on research and education that promote joint sustainability of unconventional energy production and water resources. ConocoPhillips is a South Metro Denver Chamber member. “By establishing this unique center at Colorado School of Mines, ConocoPhillips demonstrates the value it places on edu-

cating students about the technical aspects of energy and water resources, and exposing them to the critical sustainability questions that arise around unconventional energy production,” said Mines’ President Bill Scoggins. “The center will advance our expertise in earth, energy and environment, and further strengthen our longstanding partnership with ConocoPhillips.” Mines’ Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Terri Hogue will serve as director of the ConocoPhillips Center for a Sustainable WE2ST at Colorado School of Mines. Areas of focus for the center include education; community acceptance, communication and corporate social responsibility research; and integrated water resources assess-

ment research. The research and educational initiatives undertaken at the center will benefit not only unconventional energy producers and water-reliant industrial stakeholders, but also the general public. “We cannot be a leading Exploration and Production company without also being a great water company,” said Al Hirshberg, executive vice president, Technology & Projects, ConocoPhillips. “The ConocoPhillips Center for a Sustainable WE²ST is an important extension of our existing global efforts around water sustainability.” ConocoPhillips takes a comprehensive approach and implements action plans to respect water resources and support the company’s sustainable efforts. In 2013, the company’s actions included re-

ducing water use per well for hydraulic fracturing in Eagle Ford by about 45 percent and establishing a Water Solutions group to ensure it has the technology and technical capability to meet future water management goals. In Doha, Qatar, the company’s Global Water Sustainability Center uses state-ofthe-art analytical capabilities to advance the science around produced water treatment, seawater desalination and water reuse and recycling. Research is then shared across the company. “Challenges presented by water are diverse and highly specialized,” said Fran Vallejo, vice president and treasurer, ConocoPhillips, and a Colorado School of Mines graduate. “They require innovative ideas and solutions from the best and

brightest minds, which is why we are proud to collaborate with Colorado School of Mines to develop this state-of-the-art center.” ConocoPhillips has a longstanding commitment to Colorado School of Mines. By supporting education, charitable giving, volunteerism and civic leadership, the company helps build skills critical for the future. Through this and other educational contributions, ConocoPhillips aims to advance research in secondary and technical education; support diversity of the talent pool in math, science and engineering disciplines; and improve effectiveness of primary education. REVIEWS The 2015 TRD ProTacoma Double Cab has a powerful V-6, 4.0L engine. The 2015 Toyota FJ Cruiser is perfect for Colorado residents with its outdoorsman appeal.

Lonesome Dove FJ Cruiser is for young at heart

By H. Throttle Hunting or fishing, maybe camping in a national park, the new Toyota FJ Cruiser is the ideal outdoor vehicle for Colorado’s mountain terrain. Large and rugged, this is an outdoorsman’s dream vehicle boasting so many performance features. With plenty of horsepower for highways, the FJ drives perfectly on massive allweather tires. The 260 HP, 4.0 liter, V-6 engine provides the muscle with a choice of twoor four-wheel drive systems. This vehicle really appeals to the young professional market where the unique features, outdoor concept resonates with younger road warriors. However, with so many features and loaded with technical and mechanical choices, this is not a inexpensive vehicle and prices may vary at dealerships, but this Cruiser is so new that prices were not available at press time. Toyota describes this FJ as “slightly menacing.” Under the hood, this beast has a cyclone pre-air cleaner to trap sand and dirt thrown up during the drive that is easy to clean. It has water resistant seats for that elk hunt in the MeekerCraig area of Colorado. Rub-

ber type flooring and rear deck make it easy to clean the “trail” out of the trailblazer. The responsive V-6 uses regular gas, so those high priced rural gasoline stations don’t sell that premium fuel to FJ drivers. Offering two transmission choices, the 4x4 offers a sixspeed manual transmission and an electronically shifted five-speed automatic transmission for city driving rather than mountain trails. The frame is a boxed steel ladder to which the welded steel body is mounted. Skid plates protect the engine, transmission and fuel tank. Double-wishbone independent front suspension offers great articulation to avoid high centering on trail fluctuations. The FJ Cruiser has front seat and side airbags, first and second row curtain air bags. Brakes are extensive with rollover sensors that can deploy all air bags. The driver’s seat has an eight-way adjustment and passenger has four seat choices. Rear seats fold to allow additional cargo space that has a rubber easy-to-clean material. Warranty is important and Toyota offers a 36 month/36,000 basic new-vehicle warranty that applies to all components 60 months and 60,000 mile on the powertrain. My kids loved this vehicle.

2015 TRD Pro-Tacoma Double Cab is the real deal By H. Throttle It’s hard to describe a Bronco orange pickup as “cute,” but this is the real deal in small pickups. It is just fun to drive and so handy with the extra cab space and the pickup bed, a perfect work vehicle for an individual or work crew. The Toyota TRD Pro-Tacoma seems more fitting for a younger “macho” driver who likes the sleek design with the air filter rise in the

engine hood depicting a supercharged engine. The bright orange also may be more fitting for the younger generation of road warriors. Powerful with a deep V-6 4.0 L engine, this baby can purr down the highway with a slick all-wheel transmission that can be adjusted to four or two wheel drive. Large mud and snow tires make the pickup sit higher on the road and provide gripping road traction. The drive transmission is se-

quential so with a quick flip of the transmission knob, the driver goes to a powerful fourth gear that is perfect for passing or quick acceleration and then back into drive with another easy shift. This is a great off-road vehicle perfect for a fishing expedition into the Colorado high-country. This is a brand new Toyota product so no price yet, but check it out at the local dealerships. This is a really great drive, especially for those younger guys and gals.

Well-named all-wheel drive for seven 2014 Toyota Highlander has it all

By H. Throttle The 2014 Toyota Highlander is a solid performer and became my best friend in only a week. The smart key makes it chirp at me as I approach and hit the door and greet this very friendly allwheel drive performer. Powered with a V-8 engine and six-speed variable transmission, the fuel economy averaged around 23 mpg, which is very good for a large engine, with the great transmission harmonizing with the engine. The “pre-dawn gray mica paint” sparkles in the Colorado sunshine and this is a pretty vehicle. This Highlander has all of the navigation systems, multi-channel radio, latest phone and computer devices, all wrapped up in the $44,450 pricing package. This vehicle has seating for seven passengers so is a large style unit, but it just feels safe and se-

cure, not large, and so easy to drive and handle with ease. One feels a certain sense of safety in larger vehicles, while the small cars zip around easily and provide great fuel economy, the highways are bustling and personal safety is a prime consideration. Braking has come a long way in all cars and most now have disk brakes on all four wheels with added weight distribution and power features. The Highlander has a special

feature. When on cruise control, it will slow down as you approach a car from behind automatically so you don’t have to brake or turn off the cruise control. Cruise control is hard to use when it continues to push forward into a traffic situation or on wet or slick roads. Nice to use to keep from getting a ticket but somewhat tricky in heavy traffic situations. “Let’s Go Places” is the Toyota slogan and they really mean it with some great vehicles.

South Metro Chamber group presents $4,000 to Boy Scouts LEADapalooza, one of South Metro Denver Chamber’s business-leads groups, presented a $4,000 check July 7 to Boy Scout Troop 4 of Littleton. The money was donated by area residents who dropped off 40,000 pounds of used electronics and 10,000 pounds of documents to be shredded at a free event last month. The effort was sponsored and staffed by members of LEADapalooza. Scouts from Troop 4 also were on hand to help. The check was presented to the troop at its quarterly Court of Honor in Leawood Park. “This is the most successful event of any kind that I’ve ever been involved with,” said Cheryl Braunschweiger of ALMC Mortgage at NOVA Home Loans, the primary organizer of the recycling and shredding event. “The shredding truck provided by SHRED-IT was so full that the sides were bulging. And Techno+Rescue had to bring in extra trucks because of the tremendous volume of items we collected for recycling.” The cost of the event was underwritten by 22 member companies of LEADapalooza: 303 Denver Chiropractic, A Cleaner Carpet, ALMC Mortgage at NOVA Home Loans, Arrow B Architecture, Brickyard BBQ, C Squared Computer Consulting, Centennial Leasing & Sales, Experience Pros radio show, Handyman Matters, Holly Mullins, Farmers Insurance Group, JerryBrownPR, Major Mom, Mark Thomas, RE/MAX Professionals, Nexus Financial Services, Pearle Vision – Streets at SouthGlenn, PROformance Apparel, Riviera Finance, RMK Cartridge, SG Associates, Cathy Reilly, Silpada Designs, SuperMedia and Weksler Benefits.

Southeast Light Rail Extension OK’d The RTD Board of Directors has given the go-ahead for two transit projects, including the Southeast Light Rail Extension into Douglas County. The projects will be included in RTD’s amendment to the 2040 Regional Transportation Plan, which it will submit to the Denver Regional Council of Governments in early August. On July 15, in addition to the $207 million extension of the existing Southeast Light Rail Line into Lone Tree, the board authorized a $75 million bus-rapid-transit route along Highway 119 in the northwest area. Board Chair Chuck Sisk said the two projects are huge from a regional perspective because they promote progress in the both northwest and southeast parts of the metro region. “It’s another example of the tremendous cooperation we enjoy as a region,” he said. “Both projects are subject to receiving federal funds, but RTD has a successful history in securing federal funds to help build regional projects.” RTD has already applied for a federal grant to fund the next level of study for the Colorado 119 project. Results of that application are expected this fall. Since the 2007 economic downturn when building costs skyrocketed and tax revenues plummeted, RTD has sought funding from alternative sources to complete FasTracks projects. The leveraging of public and private funds and federal grants has increased RTD’s ability to move forward with its transit expansion program.

Members of the South Metro Denver Chamber’s LEADapalooza present a symbolic check for $4,000 to Littleton’s Boy Scout Troop 4.
