Lonesome Dove FJ Cruiser is for young at heart

By H. Throttle Hunting or fishing, maybe camping in a national park, the new Toyota FJ Cruiser is the ideal outdoor vehicle for Colorado’s mountain terrain. Large and rugged, this is an outdoorsman’s dream vehicle boasting so many performance features. With plenty of horsepower for highways, the FJ drives perfectly on massive allweather tires. The 260 HP, 4.0 liter, V-6 engine provides the muscle with a choice of twoor four-wheel drive systems. This vehicle really appeals to the young professional market where the unique features, outdoor concept resonates with younger road warriors. However, with so many features and loaded with technical and mechanical choices, this is not a inexpensive vehicle and prices may vary at dealerships, but this Cruiser is so new that prices were not available at press time. Toyota describes this FJ as “slightly menacing.” Under the hood, this beast has a cyclone pre-air cleaner to trap sand and dirt thrown up during the drive that is easy to clean. It has water resistant seats for that elk hunt in the MeekerCraig area of Colorado. Rub-

ber type flooring and rear deck make it easy to clean the “trail” out of the trailblazer. The responsive V-6 uses regular gas, so those high priced rural gasoline stations don’t sell that premium fuel to FJ drivers. Offering two transmission choices, the 4x4 offers a sixspeed manual transmission and an electronically shifted five-speed automatic transmission for city driving rather than mountain trails. The frame is a boxed steel ladder to which the welded steel body is mounted. Skid plates protect the engine, transmission and fuel tank. Double-wishbone independent front suspension offers great articulation to avoid high centering on trail fluctuations. The FJ Cruiser has front seat and side airbags, first and second row curtain air bags. Brakes are extensive with rollover sensors that can deploy all air bags. The driver’s seat has an eight-way adjustment and passenger has four seat choices. Rear seats fold to allow additional cargo space that has a rubber easy-to-clean material. Warranty is important and Toyota offers a 36 month/36,000 basic new-vehicle warranty that applies to all components 60 months and 60,000 mile on the powertrain. My kids loved this vehicle.

By H. Throttle The 2014 Toyota Highlander is a solid performer and became my best friend in only a week. The smart key makes it chirp at me as I approach and hit the door and greet this very friendly allwheel drive performer. Powered with a V-8 engine and six-speed variable transmission, the fuel economy averaged around 23 mpg, which is very good for a large engine, with the great transmission harmonizing with the engine. The “pre-dawn gray mica paint” sparkles in the Colorado sunshine and this is a pretty vehicle. This Highlander has all of the navigation systems, multi-channel radio, latest phone and computer devices, all wrapped up in the $44,450 pricing package.
