It Takes a Village to Make a Home The Inn at Greenwood Village
Submitted by The Inn at Greenwood Village It takes a village to make a home and at The Inn at Greenwood Village, this couldn’t be more true. When you walk through the doors of our community, you will find people of all ages engaged with each other enjoying life. Residents, associates, family members, local professionals and neighbors
involved in community activities, playing a game of cards, enjoying a fresh baked cookie, playing with our community dog or sharing a favorite story. The Inn has a wide variety of activities, many of which are led by the residents and/ or tailored to their special interests. Resident family members also help lead activities and are like second family to the entire community. Associates are very flexible and make time to know each resident. They understand and respond to resident needs. They stop what
they are doing when possible to spontaneously join in the community fun. These are comments our residents and family members have shared with us. Most recently, when asked what makes The Inn so special, the daughter of a Greenwood resident said, “The Inn is cozy, quaint and home like. The associates and other family members really become part of resident’s lives in a meaningful way. Family members feel comfortable approaching associates knowing their voice will
be received by an experienced compassionate ear. The residents look out for each other and the family members of each resident. When my mom first arrived, both residents and associates reached out to welcome her to their community sharing personal stories and hugs. Mom has really blossomed at The Inn. Since moving to The Inn, mom has found her voice and internal strength teaching me and my siblings how to adapt to and find joy in life.” We hope you will come by
and experience life at The Inn at Greenwood Village. We provide quality assisted living services to seniors and their families with spacious studio’s, one or two bedroom apartments and and personalized care plans. We look forward to sharing our home with you. The Inn at Greenwood Village is located at 5565 S. Yosemite St. in the heart of Greenwood Village. No place like home – with Home Care Assistance By Peter Jones Although Pete Lane had very little experience in senior services, per se, when he opened Home Care Assistance of Centennial a year ago, you might say he had a history of delivering for his aging neighbors. “I think to back when I was a paperboy, I had several elderly clients in downtown Littleton and I used to stop and talk. I’ve always had heart for seniors,” he said. Those memories – and recollections of his grandmother living with the family – came back like yesterday when the versatile businessman made the leap in October 2013 from software to homecare. “I always enjoyed working with seniors, and there’s definitely a need. It’s a great way to give back to the community and still have a good strong business,” he said. Enter Home Care Assistance, a national California-based franchise of in-home care services for the elderly and others in need of temporary or permanent aid. Lane’s office serves the communities of Centennial, Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village, Littleton, Englewood, southeast Aurora and south Denver. The idea is that by offering help with cooking, housekeeping, personal care, medication reminders and transportation, the firm’s professional caregivers can help clients maintain their daily routine and independence in the comfort of home. The company offers a wide range of hourly and 24-hour live-in care options. “We are a holistic approach,” Lane said. “We want our care-
givers to make sure our clients have a healthy diet, that they’re as physically active as they can be, that they’re socially engaged, mentally stimulated, and also have that sense of purpose. We focus on the tasks as well as the relationship. It’s very important that the caregiver builds that trust with their clients.” Those home caregivers have special training in such individualized areas as Parkinson’s disease, stroke recovery, hospice services and post-hospital care. Specific to Home Care Assistance is a focused plan for clients with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The proprietary nonmedical Cognitive Therapeutics is designed to help slow down the progress of dementia. “It’s a series of activities and exercises that stimulate not only the memory domain of the brain, but executive functioning, language, attention and visual,” Lane said. That is one far end of the spectrum, however. Clients who are still a long ways from Alzheimer’s can receive whatever specialized help around the house they may need, regardless of their age or for how long they need it. “We had a man who had hip replacement. We helped him for about three weeks. Once he got to the point where he could support himself, we left,” Lane said. Such services are expected to become increasingly in demand as baby boomers continue to age and redefine the nature of retirement. In addition to a progressively active senior population, a poll by AARP showed nine out of 10 seniors want to continue living in their normal home environment for as long as possible.
If you hire someone, you can actually have that parentchild relationship, rather than a parent-caregiver relationship. – Pete Lane, owner Home Care Assistance of Centennial The focus at Home Care Assistance of Centennial is on the tasks as well as the relationship. “It’s very important that the caregiver builds that trust,” business owner Pete Lane said.

While many adult children – often called the “sandwich generation” – continue to care for their parents, even while raising their own children, Lane says that option is neither practical nor desirable for many working adults. “It’s a very stressful job to take care of an aging parent,” Lane said, “whereas if you hire someone, you can actually have that parent-child relationship, rather than a parent-caregiver relationship. For more information on Home Care Assistance of Centennial, call 303-957-3100 or visit www.centennialhomecare assistance.com.
Pete and Amy Lane opened the Centennial franchise of Home Care Assistance last year. By offering help with cooking, housekeeping and other chores, professional caregivers help clients maintain their daily routine and stay at home.

Beat those winter blues HighPointe Assisted Living & Memory Care is the place to do just that
Submitted by HighPointe With Halloween just around the corner, it’s official that we’ve closed the chapter on summer and have moved into the winter months. With the holidays shortly approaching, to many this is a wonderful opportunity to schedule some much needed vacation time to visit family and friends. However, the winter season can be a challenging time for our older loved ones. Colder temperatures can present safety challenges, especially for seniors. As we grow older, we become more sensitive to the cold. Our bodies take much longer to heat up and we are more susceptible to hypothermia. As well, the holiday and winter months can be extremely challenging for those who have recently lost their spouse or loved ones. Many seniors become more depressed during the winter months, feeling even more isolated and lonely, especially if they can no longer drive or do not want to drive in bad weather. Wouldn’t it be nice to be

Submitted by Debra Calle, MorningStar of Littleton We’ve all been part of this colorful scene. Family and friends buzzing around the largest dining table in the house. Enticing aromas wafting from the kitchen where a flushed cook scurries. It’s a Rockwell painting. It’s the quintessential American scene. It’s the holiday dinner. Yet creating these festive events can be exhausting (and hardly a holiday for the chief cook)—from getting down the fine china to preparing an ambitious menu. Why all the fuss? But we know why. Because breaking bread has always been the most powerful of human connections. Something special happens across a dinner table. This is time set apart to be together. To linger long and really talk. For many, this is a rare time for adult siblings to reunite. Often the conversation naturally turns to the health of the family’s most senior members. “So, dad, how are you getting on these days?” “Just how do you think mom is doing?” In these relaxed settings, an extended family can begin the conversation of next step for their aging parents. They can comfortably introduce the topics that attend all of us as we grow older. “Mom, dad— are you struggling with home upkeep, loneliness, diet or safety?” And though this is not a oncefor-all conversation, you might be surprised. Perhaps your beloved senior has been thinking about this for some time—and wants to hear your ideas on making a transition. The residents of MorningStar Senior Living are the ultimate testimony to the benefits of assisted living: “My wife and I were just existing in our former home, but we’re living here at MorningStar. It’s all in how you look at the changes in your life,” according to one resident. “My husband and I are tickled to have mom at MorningStar. We get nothing but positive comments from her and, to be honest, a much more optimist attitude. When we see our caller ID these days, it’s an entirely different feeling. Now we hear about things she did that day, and words of appreciation instead of... well, I won’t go to the instead of,” shared a resident’s daughter. As much as we all resist change, we know from near-continuous experience, that transitions—well considered—also bring invigorating new relationships, joys and adventure. The structure and society offered in Assisted Living communities can bring a return of healthy routines and healthier lives. Colorado wins national award for health coverage enrollment innovation The state of Colorado was recognized for Innovation in Service Delivery at the 47th Annual IT Solutions Management for Human Services Conference for improving the consumer experience when applying for health coverage. Through the improvements in the online application, Coloradans applying for Medicaid and Children’s Health Plan Plus received a real time eligibility determination nearly 80 percent of the time; improving a process that previously took up to 45 days, down to about 45 minutes. The Department of Health Care Policy and Financing, the Department of Human Services, the Governor’s Office of Information Technology and Deloitte worked together to plan and implement RTE functionality. Colorado currently has one of the top RTE success rates in the nation, and is recognized as one of the top four states in implementing the Affordable Care
Act for enrollment, use of technology, and outreach. “We made the application more dynamic, only asking questions that are pertinent to the eligibility decision we needed to make,” said Antoinette Taranto, chief client officer for the Department. “In one month alone during 2014 open enrollment we processed 60,000 applications, twice our average of 30,000 per month. This technology has allowed Colorado to handle the increased workload without increasing staff.” Colorado is working with Connect for Health Colorado and its agency partners to make further enhancements to its application process going into the 2015 open enrollment period, which runs Nov. 15 to Feb. 15, 2015. These upgrades will improve the overall consumer experience and empower Coloradans to better manage their health benefits.

Eastern Star Masonic Retirement Campus is expanding Grand opening set for Nov. 22
Submitted by Eastern Star Masonic After 83 years of providing care for the elderly, the Eastern Star Masonic Retirement Campus is building a new addition to their already existing assisted living community. The new construction comes after a five-year study by the Board of Trustees that determined Denver is still in need of additional assisted living and memory care apartments. The building will be called the Barry Building. Once the decision was made to move forward, the board secured a loan from Colorado Business Bank. The groundbreaking ceremony was in September 2013 with an opening date in the fall 2014. Previous additions to the community were completed in 1954, adding 12 units, 1959, adding 12 more units and 1976 adding 10 additional apartments. The current 1931 building is beautiful and historic and provides care for 42 assisted living residents. In keeping with our nonprofit mission to provide affordable care for seniors, the original building will continue to feature lower priced assisted living with some apartments dedicated to Medicaid recipients. Now, with advances in technology and care, the community is embarking on a new addition that will provide a state of the art living
environment for seniors who are no longer safe at home. The Barry Building will feature 48 assisted living and 20 memory care apartments. When complete, the Eastern Star Masonic Retirement Campus will have a total of 88 assisted living, 20 secured memory care apartments, and 58 independent patio homes. The amenities and features at the Barry Building will include: • 24-hour response system with round the clock staffing and nurse consultation • Kitchenette with full size refrigerator • All utilities paid which include telephone, basic cable, and WiFi • Exercise room • Movie theater • Full-service beauty salon and barber • Elegant dining room with fireplace serving 3 meals a day with snack stations located on each floor • Chapel with Sunday services • Library with computer access • Wide selection of social, recreational and spiritual activities • All housekeeping, linen and laundry services provided Tours of the entire Barry Building are available seven days a week and the community is accepting deposits on available apartments. The Grand Opening is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22, 2 – 5 p.m. For more information on pricing and floor plans, call Diane or Debra at 303 731-5897.
