Sharing Culture One important area of language teaching that we have always emphasized is the teaching of cultural aspects of the countries where the languages we teach are spoken. This is the case of our English classes where we teach students such details as how currency works, how people behave, body language, and so on. In the case of our Spanish classes, teaching culture becomes an interesting issue for our students, as they live in our country and have been exposed to the local environment for some time. Their curiosity raises issues such as why people behave in different forms in specific circumstances, or what makes people say this or that expression. Teachers play a very important role in the sharing of a foreign culture, based on their personal experience and professional knowledge.

July was the perfect month to share important aspects of both American and Peruvian culture. In particular, Fiestas Patrias motivated the activity you see in the picture above, where students learned about making Suspiro Limeño or what originated the name Causa. August brings us a new topic, an event that takes place every four years in a different city around the world. We are referring to the Beijing Olympics which are dealt with by teacher Jorge Landauro with two fun activities on page 4. We are sure our students will be following this worldwide event that interests not only sports fanatics but anyone who wishes to learn more about China, their culture and their remarkable progress. We would like to thank all the students and teachers who have contributed greatly to this issue of our Newsletters: from texts to photos. Your work enriches this publication and tells us about your interest in having your or someone’s achievement published as a way to motivate the people around you. We look forward to more contributions in the issues to come! At this point we are starting to hear more news about APEC, which is taking place in November. You all must be aware that this international event has caused changes in our Academic Calendar originally published in December 2007. The changes are reflected in the lower right-hand corner of this issue, our website and in new printed calendars that you can pick up from our offices. We ask you to pay attention to this information. Have a great term and see you in September!

Teacher’s Day The INIPUC staff celebrated their day in Chacarilla The INIPUC teaching and administrative staff gathered on July 4th to celebrate Teacher’s Day. The activity was organized by an enthusiastic group of teachers: Melisa Celi, Maricarmen Céspedes, Evelyn Chávez and Norma Barrantes. The celebration included games and a special welcome to all the new staff that has joined INIPUC in the last few months. Prior to the celebration, the organizers had requested teachers’ votes for four categories: Most talkative teacher, prettiest, most handsome and coolest. Who did they elect? Just have a look at the picture on the right! All winners were “crowned” in the presence of their colleagues and they were all warmly congratulated. In a very special moment, our Director, Ms. Alicia Craman, awarded senior teacher and coordinator, Mr. Víctor Carrión, a commemorative pin which represented all our gratitude for the valuable lessons he has taught since the institute opened. Teachers were offered a casual snack while they enjoyed part of the show. The evening ended with lively music and some good dancing.
Teachers enjoyed their evening in different ways.
¡Felices Fiestas Patrias!
RD: This is what it looks like Students respond to Reader’s Digest with a photo Those of you who read RD in July may have noticed that page 29 featured a invitation for readers to submit pictures that exemplified what the last workday of the week looked like to them. Pauline Martinez’s Intermediate-7 students decided to tell RD what their last INIPUC workday of the month looked like and had a picture taken. The result is the photo on the right, where our students are saying “Thank God it’s Friday”, they are celebrating with pizza and holding RD in their hands. RD has promised to share some of the photos in the upcoming months. In case our students’ picture does not come out, we want them to feel proud that, at least, it made it to the Newsletter! We would like to congratulate these students for their enthusiasm when it comes to reading material like RD. Great work!

A Good Laugh Finally, a friend's husband has decided that, at the ripe old age of 48, he needs to get into shape. We went to the gym where a trainer asked him if he could do the splits. “Of course I can't”, he answered. “How flexible are you?” she asked. To which he replied “Well, I can't do Tuesdays.”

Fabiola Cabello gives Intermediate and Advanced students a few tips to write their Reading Reports.
Vìctor Santivañez brought Keane’s “Crystal Ball” to our attention, along with its powerful video.
Here are some guidelines that will surely lead you to succeed in writing a good Reading Report: Choose not only an interesting article, but also a viable one. Make sure you find it easy to read and write about (stories, for instance are easier to summarize). After reading the article once or twice (if necessary) write a list of the most important ideas in your own words on a separate piece of paper. Expand each idea you have previously written. Avoid redundancy, literal copying and irrelevant information. Decide if you want to re-organize your ideas or not. Write out the notes as connected paragraphs keep in mind the grammar and language you already know. Check your language. The use of a good English dictionary is vital. You can consult your text books for grammar. Make sure you have stated your opinion. Support your points by giving reasons, comparing the text to real life or saying what you would have done or would do in the situation. Pick out the words or expressions that are new, but relevant to understand the article and write them under New Expressions. Make sure give the correct meaning according to the context. Type your work carefully checking the right number of words for each section. Double-check your work. You may need to change something or correct some spelling.

Who is the man I see Where I'm supposed to be? I lost my heart, I buried it too deep Under the iron sea Oh, crystal ball, crystal ball Save us all, tell me life is beautiful Mirror, mirror on the wall Lines ever more unclear I'm not sure I'm even here The more I look the more I think that I'm Starting to disappear (Chorus) Oh, crystal ball, hear my song I'm fading out, everything I know is wrong So put me where I belong I don't know where I am And I don't really care I look myself in the eye There's no one there I fall upon the earth I call upon the air But all I get is the same old vacant stare (Chorus) Oh, crystal ball, hear my song I'm fading out, everything I know is wrong So put me where I belong

“Yo lloro a veces”, respondí. El chofer me preguntó nuevamente: “¿Señorita, tiene sencillo?” “Discúlpeme señor. No le entiendo”. El señor sacó S/.10 en billete y una moneda y dijo: “Señorita, esto es sencillo y esto es un billete”. Me dio vergüenza y pensé: “¡Tierra, trágame!” Le pedí disculpas al señor porque se quedó nervioso. Cuando llegué a casa y le conté todo a mi esposo, se rió mucho y yo también.
