The Start of a New Time December 17, 2008 marked the beginning of a new time for the Catholic University language centers with the official launch of Idiomas Católica, the new language school resulting from the merge of previous centers that PUCP managed. IC was born with the aim of becoming a springboard for success and growth both at personal and professional levels. IC has been established to offer quality academic content to enable students to use language functionally, effectively and selfsufficiently. All of us at Idiomas Católica hope to contribute not only to your personal goals, but also to those established by Pontificia Universidad Católica in reference to its international perspectives and institutional strategic plan.

Being part of PUCP’s new language school motivates all of us to work harder and more enthusiastically in order to achieve institutional goals, serving you better and more effectively. This philosophy is driven by our three values: respect, compromise and positive attitude. We would not want to close this message without taking this opportunity to welcome all our new students who have preferred Idiomas Católica as the place to spend a productive summer. Se Inauguró IDIOMAS CATÓLICA

New Website Gets Everyone’s Attention

Local de Pueblo Libre fue bendecido el 17 de diciembre

The IDIOMAS website was launched in December 2008

Most of you may have realized that the concept behind the brand new Idiomas Católica website relies on practicality and interactivity, not to mention the attractive features and colors to match our identity. Four clear sections are indicated through tabs on the front page: Main page, Registration, Programs and Services and About Us. The main page features the latest news and draws the user into the main services of Idiomas Católica and our new switchboard. There is also room for videos and easy access to our Newsletter and Podcast. The Registration page contains all the information that users would possibly need when they wish to register for our courses, ranging from course programming to certificates. Programs and Services is packed with information and access to all our courses, both face-to-face and virtual, international exams and information for PUCP students. Finally, About Us gives you an overview of Idiomas Católica, our vision, mission and values, as well as information regarding our teachers and facilities. Our website keeps growing bigger each day. Pretty soon we will have more news and interactive features for you. Remember, visit www.idiomas.pucp.edu.pe!

La cafetería en la nueva sede de Idiomas Católica en Pueblo Libre cuenta con cómodo mobiliario, una acogedora terraza y servicio Wi-Fi. Al igual que todas las cafeterías IC, ésta es también operada por Sodexho.

2009 Commencement AGM took place in Pueblo Libre While our students packed our hallways to request information and register online, the IC staff gathered in Pueblo Libre on January 5th for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to officially launch the 2009 activities. Thanks to the facilities in our brand-new building, our staff comfortably gathered in one of the multi-purpose rooms on the third floor. These same rooms can be split in two 20-student spaces thanks to removable partitions. During the event, our directors Elsa Aragonés and Alicia Craman, addressed the audience with interesting reflections about Idiomas Católica’s vision, mission and values, as well as our aims and commitment for 2009. The event was also an opportunity to greet our newly-appointed coordinator Ms. Melisa Celi, as well as new assistant coordinators Ms. Johanna Villacrez, Mr. Edwin Chinén, Ms. Claudia Olcese, Mr. Cristian Garay and Ms. Mirna Dominguez, all of whom were warmly welcomed by their colleagues.

More than 130 teachers attended the 2009 AGM in Pueblo Libre.

A Good Laugh Two husbands, Bill and Doug, were discussing their married lives. Although happily married, they admitted that there were argument sometimes. Then Bill said, "I've made one great discovery. I now know how to always have the last word.“ "Wow!" said Doug, "How do you manage that?" "It's easy," replied Bill. "My last words are always 'Yes, Dear.'“ (www.hicards.com)

Christmas 2008 Last Christmas was celebrated, in great spirit, by the Idiomas staff. On December 19th, the staff gathered in Campus PUCP to celebrate the season with the whole PUCP family. During lunch, our friends Rosángela Rey and Silvia Químper were lucky enough to draw one of the many prizes offered by university authorities. On December 22 nd, the Idiomas family gathered in Chacarilla to give a warm farewell to 2008 surrounded by colorful confetti, good food and tons of friendship. The organizing committee put together a remarkable program which included music, surprising appearances and the traditional gift exchange. After such memorable celebrations, the staff “retreated” for a well-deserved holiday break!

Sound Advice

y Vanit Fair

Junior-Advanced 2 students in San Isidro (December 2008), guided by teacher Kathia Carrillo, put together interesting posters where they gave advice to people who wish to have a great look on their first dates. Here are two samples.

Vanity Fair!

How to dress on your first

How to dress for success on your first date

• If you want to look thinner, wear a dark blouse, but if you are very thin and you want to look wider, put on a white blouse. • Make sure that the color of your clothes suits your hair and skin color.

Date (For girls)

1. Try to look cute and elegant, depending on where you are going. 2. If you want to look smaller, you can wear dark clothes, but if you want to look bigger, wear light clothes. 3. If you are thin and tall, don’t wear stripes. They make you look bigger. 4. Wear make-up, but look natural. 5. If you don’t want to look smaller, don’t wear baggy clothes.

Listening Effectively –by Fabiola Cabello “What on earth are they saying?”- “Can you say that again?”“Repeat that please.” Do any of these sentences sound familiar to you?... When learning a new language, especially English, we have to be aware of some difficulties we may find on the way. Most of the time, our four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) do not seem to develop or grow equally-leveled. If listening is your weak point, here I give you some tips to help you improve it: ▫ Play an audio CD of your lesson while doing the chores, exercising or driving and listen to it without paying special attention to what it’s actually said. This way your hearing will get used to English words, intonation and pronunciation. ▫ Listen to songs in English right before going to bed or even while you are asleep. Let your subconscious do its part. This way your brain will be prepared for acquiring conscious input. ▫ When trying to listen to a CD in class, listen for the key words that will help you understand the main idea. ▫ When trying to understand and listen to someone who is talking to you in person, try to read his/her lips and interpret his/her gestures and facial expressions. Focus and concentrate! ▫ IPODS or MP3 players could be of great help. You could easily listen to your favorite tunes and go through the lyrics while listening. After practicing enough, you could try listening to the songs with no lyrics at all! ▫ Practice, practice, practice! There’s a very good site where you can find lots of listening exercises at all levels: www.esllab.com Remember: a good listening skill is an important tool to master the language. “The word listen contains the same letters as the word silent” Alfred Brendel.
