The Many Facets of May As the whole city gets ready for the Summit of Presidents and Governors from Latin-America, the Caribbean and the European Union, INIPUC activities carry on. Allow us to have a closer look at the month of May. Although most of you might relate May to Mother’s Day, you may not be aware that this celebration does not fall on the same date around the world. In the United Kingdom, for example, Mothering Day (as it is known) takes place four weeks before Easter Sunday. This can happen any time between March 1st and April 4th. In the United States, like in Peru, Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May. In countries as close as Argentina, this happens on the third Sunday of October. As you can see, dates to honor mothers truly varies, but the feeling is alike everywhere you go. However, there is one more very important May holiday in the United States: Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day began in honor of all those militaries who died CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES MAY Final Exam (Daily Courses) Reserved Registration Open Registration

in the Civil War. Nevertheless, it is now a day to remember all the American men and women who have died in military service. We hope you enjoy the full reports of April news and activities in this issue: from an interesting Earth Day activity to the recent trips to the U.S and England that the a group of INIPUC members made. There even was a Sandwich Festival! Who knows? We may want to institutionalize our very own Sandwich Day, just like the Americans celebrate on November 3rd. We would like to congratulate students like Ana Cecilia Erán whose work about Earth Day is reproduced in this issue. We would also like to invite you to see the work of other enthusiastic people in the By our Students section. Thank you to all our contributors this month, specially those who have provided us with their pictures and notes. See you in June!

EARTH DAY April 22nd was Earth Day in many countries around the world. The celebration was started in 1960 by U.S. politician Gaylord Nelson. However, in the northern hemisphere, Earth Day is celebrated during spring, while in the southern hemisphere this takes place in autumn. Whichever the case, these dates are meant to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment. Basic-12 students in San Isidro, lead by their teacher Jenny Blume, reflected on the importance of promoting practices that can potentially serve the purpose the Gaylord Nelson pursued. Jenny’s class brought in and classified recycling material. As if this was not enough, they encouraged other INIPUC members to do the same by placing boxes labeled accordingly outside their classroom. About her students, Ms. Blume says “I am very proud of them and how much interest they put into this little project. Every little bit of effort that we can make helps our world stay green.”
EARTH DAY It is an international celebration to remind us of the need to preserve nature’s resources in the world. Earth Day is an important event for education and information. Ecologist groups have analyzed problems in our planet, like: ground and water pollution, the destruction of ecosystems, plants and animals. There are some solutions that may eliminate the negative effects of human activities. These solutions include the recycling of some manufacturing materials and the prohibition of chemical products. NEW APPOINTMENT We are glad to announce the appointment of Ms. Elsa Aragonés Jirón as Adjoined Executive Director to INIPUC. Together with Ms. Alicia Craman (Academic Director) and Ms. Rosío Zelada (Administrator), Ms. Aragonés is committed to leading INIPUC into every new challenge ahead. The INIPUC staff gave a warm welcome to Elsie and wished her all the best in this new achievement.
NEW YORK AND EXETER The cities of New York in the U.S and Exeter in the U.K. were home to two of the largest and best-reputed events for English teachers around the world. New York is the largest city of the state of New York. Many icons around the area exemplify traits which the city is famous for: Manhattan and the financial district, the intricate subway system, the Statue of Liberty and its symbolism for immigrants, and so much more. This city hosted the Annual TESOL Convention, which our colleagues had the pleasure to attend. One of them, Mr. Fernando Flores says, “I was dazzled by the commitment and professionalism of each speaker I had the chance to observe. Penny Ur was my favorite one for her presence and gentle firmness. It was a rewarding professional experience being surrounded by 12,000 colleagues from all over the world interested in improving their teaching techniques as well as me. All the teachers were very sensitive with the audience and the workshops were full of dynamism good humor and interaction.” On the other side of the Atlantic, in the city of Exeter in the southwest of England, the International Association of Teachers of English (IATEFL) held their Annual Conference. Exeter exemplifies the quiet and traditional setting of the typical small English town. Exeter is home to one of the best known universities in England, the University of Exeter, part of which is its School of Education, famous for its quality in forming teachers.

A GOOD LAUGH An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He got fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed him to hear 100%. He went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again." To which the gentleman said, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times already!"
