In many English-speaking countries, October is well-known for Halloween, the celebration that started as “All Hallow’s Eve” (Hallows = Saints / Eve = The day before), which precedes All Saint’s Day (November 1st). Halloween is usually associated with an array of symbols and activities, such as jack-o’-lanterns (carved pumpkins) used by the Celts to frighten-off superstitions; or trick-or-treating (a custom that may have originated in medieval times when the poor received food in exchange for prayers on All Souls Day). In recent years, Halloween has spread to many countries, including ours, as a mere holiday to celebrate “imaginary spooks”, disguise and give out candy to children. In the US, Halloween is believed to be the most popular holiday after Christmas. Decorating, as well as the sale of candy and costumes, have become a magnet to market products both for children and adults.

Getting Ready for Summit
Alumnos del programa de español aprenden a bailar ritmos negros del Perú
Teaching staff welcomed Allen Ascher, co-author of Top Notch and Summit
On September 29 th, the teaching staff at INIPUC welcomed Mr. Allen Ascher, co-author of the textbook series Top Notch, in his second visit to our language school. Mr. Ascher gave teachers a thorough presentation of the textbook Summit, which follows on from Top Notch 3 and which will be used in our higher-level classes to take students to a full FCE level and ready them to enter the CAE preparation course. Mr. Ascher presented Summit in its various aspects: From lesson development to its components which include video, supplementary activities, a writing syllabus, and much more. On his second workshop, Mr. Ascher gave teachers a complete overview of the writing process, looked at from the perspective of Top Notch and Summit. Teachers welcomed this presentation and observed the different strategies proposed by the author attentively. Summit will replace American Headway in all our higher-level courses. This transition is expected to take place within the next few months. We would like to thank Pearson-Longman for giving us the opportunity of having Mr. Allen Ascher with us.
Legal English Module I Comes to an End Students received their certificates on September 25th The first module of our Legal English Course was officially closed on September 25th. Part of the students received their certificates of attendance on this date, handed in by one of their instructors: Ms. Zaida Benites. The module offered in August-September 2008 was Business Law. In this module, participants explored cases as well as a wide range of literature on the subject, which allowed them to expand their knowledge of legal jargon and their communicative skills in the field. The course included presentations both by the instructors and the students. A new legal English course is scheduled for March 2009. The orthopedic surgeon I work for was moving to a new office, and his staff was helping transport many of the items. I sat the display skeleton in the front of my car, his bony arm across the back of my seat. I hadn't considered the drive across town. At one traffic light, the stares of the people in the car beside me became obvious, and I looked across and explained, "I'm delivering him to my doctor's office.“ The other driver leaned out of his window. "I hate to tell you, lady," he said, "but I think it's too late!"

More CAE/CPE Preparation Courses New courses are updated and offered in a more frequent basis As announced in May this year, our Advanced level was updated in accordance with the latest changes introduced in the CAE examination offered by Cambridge-ESOL and administered by INIPUC. Among the improvements in our Advanced level was the extended course offer from three courses a month to four. This expansion allows us to offer two CAE and two CPE preparation courses at any given month of the year. The expansion in our offer has been gradual since June 2008 in order not to affect any of those students who had already started the Advanced level. We are glad to say that the transition has been smooth and it is coming to an end. Starting November 2008, the new course offer at this level will be as follows: Months

Study Tip Let’s chat! Fabiola Cabello tells us how to practice English while making friends from around the world Today there are many places on the Internet where you can chat. You can chat with people either from an English-speaking country or from others where people are willing to practice English. There are also some native speakers who are learning Spanish that would be eager to help you out with your English as long as you do the same with them in Spanish. Chatting is a good way to practice everyday English. Messages in a chat room are usually short sentences. Sometimes they’re not even sentences, but a few words (Just the way we speak in a quick conversation with friends). There are several reliable sites you can visit to pick out the most suitable for you: www.mylanguageexchange.com Abbreviations that can be helpful when chatting: ASAP (As www.englishclub.com soon as possible), AKA (Also known as), B4 (Before), cuz www.learnenglishonline.com (Because), IDK (I don’t know), J/K (Just kidding), LOL (Laugh out loud), BTW (By the way),OIC (Oh, I see), PLZ (Please), SYL (See you later).

Have a “thrilling” Halloween day with one of the best-known pop songs in history! It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes, You're paralyzed 'Cause this is thriller, thriller night And no one's gonna save you from the beast about to strike You know it's thriller, thriller night You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight You hear the door slam and realize there's nowhere left to run You feel the cold hand and wonder if you'll ever see the sun You close your eyes and hope that this is just imagination Girl, But all the while you hear a creature creepin' up behind You're out of time 'Cause this is thriller, thriller night There ain't no second chance against the thing with forty eyes, girl You know it's thriller, thriller night You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight Night creatures call and the dead start to walk in their masquerade There's no escapin' the jaws of the alien this time (They're open wide) This is the end of your life
They're out to get you, there's demons closing in on every side They will possess you unless you change that number on your dial Now is the time for you and I to cuddle close together, yeah All through the night I'll save you from the terror on the screen, I'll make you see That this is thriller, thriller night 'Cause I can thrill you more than any ghost would dare to try Girl, this is thriller, thriller night So let me hold you tight and share a killer, diller, chiller, Thriller here tonight

Tipping Customs Around the World Basic-8 students searched the Internet for information that could be very useful when we travel.
HO CHI MINH CITY (HCMC) Tipping is not customary in Vietnam. It is becoming more common in HCMC, Hanoi and other cities frequented by tourists. Many luxury restaurants and hotels add a service charge to their bills (5-10%). Unfortunately, this money doesn’t always find its way to service staff. The Vietnamese are very proud people and tip can easily offend the recipient. Johnny Sanchez Sierra
I would like to visit Egypt in two years because it’s a country full of tradition and culture. If you travel to another country, you should know the tipping customs in that country. For example: Tips in Egypt are known as “backshish”. When an Egyptian helps you park your car or load bags or luggage, they usually expect a tip. Professional services as translators and tour guides should receive a tip of about 20%, while in restaurants it is acceptable to leave 10-15%. In most restaurants and hotels there is a service charge, but you can usually give 5% directly to the waiter. Jackeline Espinoza Berrospi.
