The Acosta Mausoleum

About this project
This project architecturally updates the Catholic Filipino archaeology of dying as well as providing an appropriate place to reflect upon the dead. The mausoleum becomes a landmark in the cemetery, an eccentric but sensitive renovation of the vernacular that is a fitting tribute to the Acosta family’s genealogy and Filipino Catholic traditions idiosyncratic to this region of the Philippines.

The profile has been cut in half, as the local church has decreed that the mausoleum cannot be over 3 metres high. We have had to change the materials, to reflect what is locally available and cost effective. The exterior will now be cladded in stone, available from the Abra river bed. The interior will be rendered and white washed. A small viewing platform which doubles up as a rain shelter has been added.

About this project
The Acosta Mausoleum responds to the client’s call for a unique pavilion to store the remains of the Acosta family. It architecturally updates the Catholic Filipino archaeology of dying as well as providing an appropriate place to reflect upon the dead. The mausoleum becomes a landmark in the cemetery, an eccentric but sensitive renovation of the vernacular that is a fitting tribute to the Acosta family’s genealogy and Filipino Catholic traditions idiosyncratic to this region of the Philippines.
