INTEGRATED AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (DUIS LABEL) MORELOS CUERNAVACA, MEXICO Client: Value: Area: Date:
Casas GEO Morelos 1,748,000,000 US $ 874 Ha 2011-Ongoing
Master Plan for a new city on the outskirts of Cuernavaca in the influence area of Greater Mexico City. The present project complies with the design criteria determined by “Sustainable and Integrated Developments label launched by the Mexican Government. The site has an area of about 874 ha and its main assets as landscape and sensitive ecological areas are being preserved and integrated in the new city. IDOM assessed the client to reach a high degree of sustainability creating urbanity. This issue is approached by creating community areas with social equipment and high quality public space, within walking distance from nearly every point. Low impact mobility patterns and mixture of several housing typologies complement the strategy towards an attractive new city inviting to live, work and play. Apart from residential uses, tertiary areas are integrated in the urban pattern, and particularly the State Government City in the Central area. The city sums up to 36,986 housing units, for approximately 125,124 inhabitants.

Client:
ACTUACIONES URBANAS DE VALENCIA Investment: 60,000,000€ Area: 71Ha Date: 2005-2006
The aim of the proposal is to promote the Grao as an urban area providing a connection between the city and the sea, using the dock as a link between the seafront promenade Paseo de la Malvarrosa and the gardens in the old river bed known as Jardín del Turia. The estuary of the river Turia is the last stretch of the garden that starts with a riverside park and runs across the city to meet the sea in an area combining green areas with the waters of the Turia delta. Cultural activity takes place along the river banks. A Museum of the Sea has been proposed for El Grao along with other cultural facilities, making the most of this space and adding up to the city’s facilities. Hence, the El Grao district combines a variety of uses in a public area designed to be a focal point that regenerates its surroundings and provides a framework for attracting new uses and activities to enhance city growth.

INFRASTRUCTURE, LANDSCAPING & PAVILLION PROJECTS FOR THE UNIVERSAL EXPO 2008 Client: Expo Zaragoza Empresarial ZARAGOZA, SPAIN (Building was selected for the 8th BIENAL INTERNACIONAL DE ARQUITETURA DE SÃO PAULO)
Investment: Area: Date:
130,000,000 € 250,000 m2 2005 – 2008
The project for the main area of Expo 2008 starts in 2001 when IDOM assists the city hall to select the best location for the international competition. IDOM develops afterwards the master plan, urban planning as well as the design of the building to house most of the exhibition area, i.e. the international pavilions and those occupied by Spanish regions. In the Expo 2008, the specific BIE international format had to be applied. This meant using the same construction concept when designing all the exhibition pavilions, and required the project to be seen as a single unit. This was an opportunity to provide Zaragoza with a first-rate building complex able to blend in with its natural and urban settings. It was also a chance to design the exhibition site so that once the Expo was over it could be transformed with as little rebuilding as possible into a service and leisure area that could then be completed and consolidated as an interesting area of the city. Thirdly, the large roof not only gave the entire project a seamless appearance and image but also created an outstanding architectonic and urban identity. Finally, underpinning the entire project by the "Water and Sustainable Development" concept and theme was a driving force not only in the realm of ideas but also as regards practical, countable questions such as energy.

THE NEW RAIL COMPLEX AT ATOCHA STATION MADRID, SPAIN
Client: Investment: Area: Date:
MINISTERIO DE FOMENTO 450,000,000 € 3665,000m2 2005 – 2008
The scope of this project spans far more than just the enlargement of the AVE (Spanish high-speed rail network) station in Atocha: it also addresses the new possibilities for Madrid stemming from this project. The detailed design proposes complex town planning schemes that capitalise on the area’s potential and ease the project’s economic feasibility. In this phase it was necessary to liaise with the different public bodies involved and coordinate with other urban schemes in this area. The new rail complex will have two concourses: the current departure area, to be refurbished and enlarged, and a new arrival area to the south, to be built over the suburban lines. The project also envisages the construction of a four-platform through station beneath Calle Méndez Álvaro and also the first platform in the current Puerta de Atocha station. The design will deliver a light-filled station with natural ventilation despite being underground. The project envisages building systems in sequential construction phases to avoid interrupting services in the city and the station (high-speed, long-distance and suburban trains). The rail complex will also include the enlargement of the suburban station, the construction of a large car park and new approach roads and links to the city, plus passenger arrival areas, taxi ranks, etc, and the redevelopment of the urban surroundings.

The project was developed by both the Civil Engineering and Architectural / Landscape groups of IDOM. Jesus Galindez Terrace & Pau Casals Square belong to a series of projects which the Bilbao City Council has undertaken in the outskirts of Bilbao. The objective was to integrate a landscaped terrace that previously presented a barrier to the city and to create a new public realm area. Before the refurbishment, the site was a derelict 18 metres slope of rock, surrounded by city over-spill. It was modelled using inclined planes of differing materials that reflect in microcosm the characteristic physical topography of the city. Public access routes connecting the upper and the lower level were also created in order to eliminate its meaning as a barrier and also in order to create spaces to rest, children's playspaces and walking routes.
