Planning a Frugal (not cheap) Wedding
SOURCE: thesimpledollar.com (edited)
The average wedding and reception in 2019 (the most recent pre-COVID year for which data is available) was $28,000, according to The Knot Real Weddings Study.
Many people dream of a beautiful, unforgettable wedding, but not many long for the financial aftermath that is almost a guarantee. The best solution is to take a serious look at all of the

expenses involved and find realistic, frugal ways to cut back on each expense without tinkering with the magic or the memories.
We found seventeen ideas for planning a frugal, but not “cheap” wedding at thesimpledollar.com (full link at the end of this article). Here is a sampling of the strategies you will find there that collectively can shave thousands of dollars from the budget of any average wedding.
Start planning early
The more time you give yourself to plan, the easier it becomes to identify bargains and turn them into a reality. Since so many wedding features are expensive, investing more time yourself can cut those costs quickly. Give yourself an extra few months between the start of planning and the event.
Ask for wedding help Instead of wedding gifts
Strategy: Ask family and friends for assistance at the ceremony in lieu of gifts
Savings: $1,400

Hold the ceremony at home or outdoors
Strategy: Have the wedding and reception at a friend or family member’s property
Savings: $10,500
Another approach is to see if you can use a public park for the wedding and utilize any structures the parks and recreation department may have for a reception. Many such departments have nice older houses near parks that can be used for events like this. While there will still be a notable cost involved for this, it’s often significantly lower than paying for a full-service venue, possibly saving you $6,500.
Do the catering yourself or Hire a family-owned restaurant
Strategy #1: Have friends and family cater for you in lieu of a gift
Savings: $2,550
Strategy #2: Ask a locally owned restaurant to cater the meal instead of a wedding catering service
Savings: $650
Buy a cake from a Grocery store or cupcakes
Strategy: Look at grocery stores for cake options
Savings: $250
Another option is to simply buy cupcakes. You

can buy large numbers of cupcakes from many bakeries for as little as $1 each. Pair that with a $30 cake stand and you can provide 70 cupcakes with a beautiful display for just $100.

Savings: $900

We can worry about almost anything. We can worry about our job, the state of the world, our relationships – even our upcoming wedding! Have you ever heard of “wedding jitters”? Worrying is behind most of that.
What’s important to know, is that studies suggest worrying can negatively impact our health with the unnecessary stress it brings into our lives. That’s not good for us. Instead of worrying, which is usually focused on what can go wrong we should be spending energy on reaching goals and enjoying the positive things in life. Here are some simple ideas that might help lessen the amount of worrying you do overall.
Keep a Journal
Whenever you find yourself worrying, write down what you’re worrying about. Be as specific as possible. Having a record of what has worried you can help you see the number of worries that play out in your life. If a similar worry repeats itself, you can learn from past experiences that there may be little or nothing to really worry about.
Practice Mindfulness
If you find yourself worrying about things way out in the future that you have no possible control over as you sit there today, stop and redirect your thoughts. Live in “today’s moment.” This takes practice but paired with deep-breathing exercises it can create a greater sense of calm.
Go “Off the Grid”
An organization called Anxiety UK did a study that revealed half of the participants felt worried when disconnected from their social media or email. Think about that. If that applies to you, maybe consider pursuing a regular “active disconnection” from all the stimulus and noise of social media at a specific time of day. This could even involve taking up a hobby – baking, long walks, or visits to the library. Any one of those things could help lessen your worrying.
Plan “Worry Time”
Create a brief spot in your daily routine dedicated to worrying. This could be in the shower, with a cup of coffee in the mornings, or on your lunch break. Then at any other time of the day when you catch yourself worrying, procrastinate it to your next “worry time.”

The Slatington Library is open for those looking for books and/or computer use. CHANGE IN MASK POLICY. Due to the increase in Covid-19 cases, we are now asking everyone to wear a mask in the library.
The library will once again be sponsoring the Donald Owens reading incentive program. This program is held in honor of Donald Owens who was an avid reader and friend of the library. The participants need to read 10 books and write down the titles. For every 10 books read, a raffle ticket will be given. Four $25.00 prizes will be given away. This program will begin on February 18th, and end on May 1st. Readers of all ages are invited to participate.

love” by Luanne Rice. They will meet virtually on February 7th at 1:00. Their book will be “Wonder of lost causes” by Nick Trout. Copies of the book are available at the library. If you are interested in joining the book club, please contact the library.
The library is currently receiving donations in memory of John Kisthardt and Debbie Silfies. We thank the families for including the library in remembrance of their loved ones. If you would like to purchase a book in memory or in honor of someone, please contact the library.
The library is no longer collecting fines for overdue books. The practice was suspended during the Covid-19 closures, and our regional library consortium decided to keep it that way. If you have any overdue materials, please return them to the library, there will be no fines, no questions asked. The book return is always open.
You can sign-up for a library card in our online catalog and select e-books and audio books from the Carbon Lehigh Downloadable Library. Both links are on our web page.
