OFF THE SHELF Slatington Library News

submitted by Louise Bechtel

The Slatington Library is open for those looking for books and/or computer use. We ask that anyone who is not vaccinated to please wear a mask. For those who are vaccinated we do recommend wearing a mask, but they are optional.

Mrs. George from Peter’s Elementary School, NLSD, reads “The Koala who Could” on the library’s website, slatingtonlibrary.org. Check out the website throughout the summer for more stories. Like us on Facebook.

Summer is approaching, and the Library is once again holding a reading incentive program for children and students. Read 10 books, write down the titles, hand them in at the desk and receive 1 raffle ticket. Two winners will be drawn at the end of the summer for a $25.00 cash prize. Younger children can have the books read to them. Our contest will run from June 14th to August 27th. Start reading.

There will be a basket social this year! The library will once again host its annual basket social. It will take place on Saturday, October 2nd at the Slatedale Fire Co. social hall. We are looking for donations of handcrafted items, gift certificates and gift baskets with a value of at least $25.00. Donations can be dropped off at the library.

The library is holding its annual fund raising campaign. Letters have been sent out to the residents of Slatington, Walnutport and Washington Township. Please consider supporting the library, any amount is appreciated.

Slatington Public Library is pleased to extend an invitation for membership to those communities who do not have a local library. From now until the end of the year, 2022, the membership fee to join our library will be reduced to $15.00, a 25% reduction. Most communities have free membership because

they help support their local library. Everyone should take advantage of the many services that a library provides. Join your public library.

The Slatington Library Book Club is now reading “Night Gardening” by E.L. Swann. The book club will meet on Monday, August 2, 2021, at 1:00 pm. via Zoom. Copies of this title are available at the library. Contact the library if you wish to join in.

You can sign-up for a library card in our online catalog and select e-books and audio books from the Carbon Lehigh Downloadable Library. Both links are on our web page.

Go For a Walk in the Woods

submitted by Nancy Thatcher

The trail through the woods in Indian Trail Park has been completed! Members of Lehigh Township Rails to Trails have finished covering the path with gravel. In addition, three areas within the path’s loop now have plantings of native perennials and shrubs. Eventually, labels will be installed to identify many of these and other native plants found throughout the woods.

During this hot summer weather, check out this path in the cool woods. While the spring wildflowers are no longer blooming, the summer ones will soon appear. Colorful and unusual fungi can be found on many of the fallen tree trunks and branches as well.

We plan to have a Grand Opening of the path later this summer. Members will be on hand to discus creek creatures, native and invasive plants. Watch for announcements of this event.

For more information about our organization, please contact Nancy at 484 330-9627.
